Wigs and gowns do a few things. 1) they provide a degree of anonymity for the advocate and bench (important in criminal cases when you can be dealing with dangerous witnesses, defendants etc). 2) They reinforce the required respect for the courtroom and those working in it. 3) they level the playing field between the opposing sides of the case.

It is also tradition dating back centuries, it is the trappings of the job, and despite the terrible remuneration there is a reason people still go to the criminal bar, and still get their wigs fitted.

It's high time that male judges stopped giving women very lenient sentences for the exactly the same crime as men. This type of misplaced chivalry has no place in a court of law. Quite often even if tried together a woman will get a suspended sentence whereas the guy gets jail time.
