Volvo V90 T6 R Design: A plug-in hybrid estate that majors on comfort

  • The Volvo V90 R Design is a big, smartly styled estate that rivals the BMW 5 Series Touring and Audi A6 Avant. Rebecca Jackson tests the 2021 V90 with its T6 plug-in hybrid powertrain to see if it's the pick of the V90 range. With its outstanding ride comfort, roomy and well-finished interior, and the potential to run in full electric or hybrid modes, the V90 T6 certainly seems to have a lot of bases covered.

    Looks great
    Good vehicle
    1). Volvo do not do electric steering column adjustment because the steering column deforms worse in crash / impact situations
    2). Camera clearly showed a 20” wheel
    She said V90 is 19” wheels
    That car is R Design, so that’s probably why it was on 20” wheels

    Safety (simply the best), Build (solidly assembled like a tank), Design (simply gorgeous), Reliability (better than any German make), Ergonomics (superb driving position and best seats - all variants included and I have sat in all of them: my preference is for Inscription Pro ones which feel like a second skin on your back in case you find yourself wearing a shirt or something with thin fabric but the ones in the R-Design are faultless and the best looking and the ones on the base trim model are super comfy - in business) make this my daily driver. Yes I would prefer rear wheel drive like BMW or MB do it (but the Volvo will outperform these on snowy roads) and a PDK-like auto box rather than a torque converter (which is quite ok anyway). The Peugeot 508 does have gorgeous frameless windows not found in any other estate to my knowledge. Overall nobody does it all and the Volvo nails it for me. All diesels can achieve superb economy if the driver is willing to accommodate for that.

    I have a Cross-country version on 19" wheels. I find the ride to be excellent. As is everything else about except the folding down of the rear seats. My old XC70 the seat squad came up and then the back came down to give a flat floor and that lip. I wish they had done this with the V90.

    • @Tomm9y
      @Tomm9y 2 роки тому +1

      On the XC70 you could even remove the seat bases to give a little more space. Good for a tall driver. The rear seats were slightly higher, more comfortable for tall passengers in the back, as the seats support more of the leg.

    Okay Rebecca the one thing every reviewer misses out on telling us motorists is the turning circle size, as this is a Volvo Estate and therefore knowing Volvo as I do, then a 3 point turning circle is hard to achieve. Try 5 points if you are lucky and have space on the roads to do so due to its long wheelbase. Otherwise anyone know next weeks National Lottery numbers as I quite fancy having one of these?

    Motoring critics these days drive me mad. They will always (as in this case) go for the sportiest model. The suspension in an R design Volvo is like driving on rocks. So hard it's untrue. I know, I've driven one.
    Why not test the Inscription model which has softer suspension and is more comfortable. Also, you correctly pointed out that the screen is a pain. Accessing items on the screen whilst on the motorway is downright dangerous. Rant over.

Heck even a Toyota Corolla estate has more room. Volvo estates lost their mojo years ago.
