    I think Jaz was really depressed when he and the band made BTATS (which is actually a really great album, and people are only realizing it now). Judging from its content and this interview. His energy is totally different from the years before and after it. I don't think he could've made it in any other state.

      I came to it late. I wasn't a fan when I first heard it (Pre-Kimsey remaster) but I adjusted my expectations and have grown to love it. I think the new mix is superior, and yes, I agree with the depressed comment, It's such a melancholic album.

    A little more than the interviewer bargained for I imagine. He's trying to ask his dippy '80s VJ questions and Jaz is coming back with all of this well-articulated but heavy, paranoid, nihilistic shit.

    Brighter than a Thousands Suns was also about the lyrics.... and it was brilliant in another way.... listen to Rubicon or Brighter than a Thousand Suns... touches on all the ideas that the band believes in....its just a little softer touch of Killing Joke on some songs but well done all the same!!.. better than most shit u hear on any radio station anywhere in the world anyway>>>

  • @Albrecht777

    What a brilliant snippet. Thank you! Though much maligned, I feel that "Brighter than a thousand Suns", the recording of which was largely completed during the year from which this interview originates, is perhaps Killing Joke's strongest album lyrically. Jaz' texts on that LP are poetic, beautiful, deep and metaphysical, with layers of meaning. They also hint at allusions to Nietzsche, Crowley, Mishima, not to mention the writers of classical antiquity. "Brighter than a thousand Suns" feels almost as if it is the most honest, most profound of all KJ records in terms of the words that it contains. The lyrical quintessence of Killing Joke, if one wishes to phrase it that way.

      @Jeff Baker I agree. There are great pop music but they are no longer present in mainstream as they were in 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
      Now almost every song you hear on popular radios today are by lazy people who lacks creativity and who thereforce relies on using softwares that generates beats or other people to create music for them rather than doing it by themselves manually like one direction, justin bieber and Kenya west.
      I used to follow todays meainstream music untill 2013 when i grew tired of it because many new songs started to sound too similar too each other and that goes with the singing so i went back listening to pop music from 70s, 80s and 90s including a little early 2000s.
      Im one of those who dont like to stick to only one genre and wants to listen to others genres.

    It's weird how I was so fanatic about them, but Brighter than a Thousand Suns lost me for quite a while. That album sucked compared to Nighttime. Brighter was too far from the roots. Nighttime struck the perfect balance between industrial punk and commercial craft. They had good songs later, but Brighter was a big misstep, and smelled of hubris, too. It's too bad, but prob inevitable.

    • @Kingrizla-fm2rr

      I'm not a fan of Brighter... either. I love their early post punk stuff and their 90s resurgence but for me Nighttime is their finest hour. Its the closest they ever came to out and out pop. But such classy, intelligent pop.

      foto21com I agree with you. "Brighter" was the worst album flat. Given the amount of music KJ has put out over the years and the scope of musical styles they have covered incl all the re mixes and versions etc. They were bound to produce a "dud" or 2 and yeah maybe it was inevitable

    • @BradleyMusicOfficial
      @BradleyMusicOfficial 8 років тому +12

      +foto21com Disagree! Brighter is the gem of the KJ catalog. Different, yes....but some of the best compositions and definitely the best lyrics of their career! It's still my favorite of theirs, just ahead of Extremities and Pandemonium.

    • @CyanBlackflower
      @CyanBlackflower 8 років тому

      Bradley Synthpop While I can appreciate your opinion & your taste here, it is yours to enjoy after all. But to me 'Brighter" was divergent from the KJ I know & love. I was introduced to them with the "Red" EP , followed by their debut album, "Killing Joke" & then "What's THIS for?" Revelations...and so forth. What I'm saying is that, the gritty, Poisonous, Damn NATION sound I understand as the signature sound & style w Geordie [Fucking] Walker's Toxic metallic guitar, Coleman screaming his FUCKING teeth out with "Hitting" Socio/Political Quasi Sarcasm - WAS the ART of K.J... to deviate from that is to venture into terrain that is NOT KJ, as I know and understand them - BUT It's OK. I liked "Birds of a Feather"...They seemed to try another rout..a Sell out? but failed. They lost a lot of their following with 'Brighter"..and HAD to return to what they DO BEST.. Outside the Genres of Techno and Hard dubplate / Rock Reggae...KJ ARE my favourite band.

      Personally, my favorites of theirs are Night Time, Brighter, Outside the Gate, and Hosannas from the Basements of hell. Of course, Brighter was much different from their other albums, with a lot more gothic rock influences and new wave as well...I don't agree that they sold out on Brighter, but I respect your opinion.
