Sailing in rough seas in the gulf of Mexico during a voyage from St. Petersburg to Destin, FL. A front hit us from the west 3 days into the trip, pushing us towards shore, we endured sailing upwind in 20 ft seas for 10 hours to keep the boat a safe distance from the coastline.

For all us novice sailors who dream of tackling a challenge when we're ready, your skill and calm is motivating. Thank you for sharing this (especially the nugget of calm at the end!). :)

Very few sailing videos give a good impression of the height of waves, yours certainly made those look frightening.

The Gulf of Mexico is the toughest sailing I've ever done. The Noreaste'sr that blow through during the winter are very serious and require full attention. Plus the waves are very close together, that don't help out either...Great video.

Very impressive video. We came back from Texas to St. Andrew's Florida and got into beam seas 10-12 feet for several days Our Hans Christian 43 rode them very well on a beam reach with 2nd reef and staysail. Actually very smooth sailing but 20 footers are a different animal.

The waves in the Gulf, remind of those found on Lake Michigan, during Big Fronts. The water piles up and gets real sloppy, the quick succession of the waves makes controlling a course more difficult than ever, as you feel like your always falling off the top of a big wave, kinda scary. At least you had some time to video the violent waters, and share the excitement of being in such conditions. Awesome Video, only wish it was longer.

Pity it's so short. I love your sailing vids. Probably because I enjoy the sailing and the sea. But you capture the spirit of being out there which is great

Thanks Mike. Its short because as the captain I was a bit too preoccupied staying safe, didnt get much time to film. Stay tune I've got a new Documentary coming as soon as I can finish the Edit....

Nice boat. Double ender design? Could look a bit like it when shooting from the bow. Looks like it takes the sea with ease!

We have sailed where I was in the cockpit and looking to one side at a wave coming at us, up at a 45 degree at its top, and wondering, “are we going to rise or have it on board with us?”. Your video does in good job showing it. Thanks.

I'm just getting into sailing and was wondering, in what way would you have handled or rode out the situation if the coastline was not near. 1) would you ride behind the wave with the current 2) ride on the wave. 3) stay between the waves or 4) into the waves. Or what other options would you have. Please elaborate. In the video it seams you where taking and the waves were hitting on the side of the boat. Did you have any sail up or where you powered by a motor? Thanks for sharing, Thumbs up.

+OG Timbercraft Thanks for watching. Normally if I was further offshore and had no issues with land near by, I would go with the wind and the waves. Straight downwind with just a small storm jib or with a little bit of engine to maintain steering ability. If it gets too big or if you're trying to go downwind as little as possible, you can attach a Drogue (sea anchor) to the back of the boat and this will keep your boat aiming downwind without sails or engine, this can also prevent unwanted surfs when it really gets huge. When the initial front hit us in the middle of the night we used the Drogue for a few hours, however we where still moving at 3 knots so eventually we had no choice but to steer upwind. That boat is a slug upwind in big waves so it often looks like the waves are coming from the side in the video. We sailed upwind instead of using the engines because when going into the waves with the engine, the propeller would be out of the water every 10 seconds, I was afraid it would eventually break the engine.

I forgot to mention you can also attach the drogue to the bow for the ultimate protection against breakers so that the waves hit bow first. Never done it though.

nice video, wondering why the boat was taking the waves on her starboard ? kinda not good sir and can cause a possible knock down.did you do any tacking?

    • @APvisualarts
      @APvisualarts  9 років тому +1

christopher smith yes it was blowing straight onshore, we had to sail upwind and do multiple tacks in order to stay at a safe distance from the coastline. The boat was not pointing up well at times and going with the weather was not an option.

    • @danfarrell5177

Nonesense - a little green water over the rail doesn't cause knockdowns and is bound to happen occasionally in interesting conditions. Knockdowns are principally due to the force of wind on the sails and/or orientation to the waves, and often due to a sudden gust or broach, but I've never heard or read of any relevance of a "buried rial" as its often called to have the gunwale underwater.

How long is your bowsprit, 11 feet? The reason I ask is that Cherubini only makes a 44 ft and 48 footer.
What's/is the name of that Cherubini? What hull number?

Just because you get a little spray over your boat is no need to panic. Just shout "wet one!" and duck. It is what makes sailing fun. No need to call the coastguard. If you sail, just go out in ever stronger winds till you get the feel of your boat and how she handles. Really it is no big deal.
