- After celebrating New Years on the NCL Breakaway we soon realized there was a problem.
Don’t watch this video if you are afraid of the sea!
NCL sailing through a Bomb Cyclone was terrifying. Although the staff worked hard to keep things calm, some passengers questioned the Captain’s choices.
I am afraid of the sea so watching it is exactly what im gonna do
Wait a min? Question how are u scared of the ocean? Iam confused pls explain?

Me too
I have thalassophobia and am terrified of the ocean so watching this is also exactly what I’m going to do.
holding my hands shut but still watching even though i have fears..
BRAVO to the captain and his team ! BRAVO! They worked nonstop through the storm and saved lives! Who on earth would want to sue?
I have zero knowledge of how things work re insurance, refund, etc, but I don't think they deserved to be sued.
I agree. I looked up the fine print on tickets for several different cruise lines and they all say the same - to sum it up: You can't sue us unless Venus is rising in the East while a volcano begins to erupt in the state of Montana, USA, while an alien lands and offers to do your laundry, and a professional pianist is playing Rachmaninov while juggling jelly beans.
You get the picture 😊
They CAN sue if any physical, mental, emotional, or psychological damage occurs due to the negligence of any ship employee, though.
@LynnRene 🤣your creativity! Love it!
@@LucianaVIP1 I have worked as a contractor dealing with Insurance claims . Some claims are the fault of humans , the rest are classified as "Acts of God." Which will be covered provided you pay your premiums , but as far as a cruise is concerned , I don't think God will be responding to any subpoenas anytime soon .
Narcissists
Cruises are a big no for me. I hate the idea of having to be in a huge boat surrounded by strangers and then being stuck in a potential danger zone.. surrounded by one of my biggest fears the ocean... everything about a cruise yells no for me
I love the ocean, but I hate the idea of a floating hotel with a bunch of feral beasts running around on it with no way to exit the hotel.
Me, too.

Dutch here, from ZEEland (sealand). People from here were raised with the sea and warnings about its force, unpredictability and destruction.
Never underestimate the sea.
File a lawsuit?? People are crazy! The captain did the best he could do. They should be lucky they are alive and not frozen in the ocean 🌊
Actually he could’ve waited in port. The captain had sufficient warning that there was a winter hurricane forming off the east coast and he choose to sail right into a hurricane. I would’ve sued.
Don't forget, they're dealing with loads of entitled folk who have no clue about travelling the seas.
@@happysloth3208 no - the island had to be evacuated.
This was a no win no matter.
That was not even that bad of a storm. We have weak people today
I think it's crazy that people wanted to sue. They should have praised the captains for getting them through without serious bodily injury or death. After all, they paid good money to travel across the ocean. Did they honestly think that storms can't happen out there?
Well if you watch the beginning of the video people did die 22 of them
@@tinaschang8390I believe the 22 people were in other places that experienced the storm - just like 300,000 power outages and 1.1 billion in damages .. doesn’t say on the cruise

The ocean is the most beautiful and also the most dangerous place on this planet. It’s similar with our feelings in life. When you’re happy and surrounded with people you love it’s like sailing on a boat in the sun with a beautiful view in the ocean. But sometimes you’re alone with deep depressions and it feels like you’re alone in the ocean at night and nobody can help you. When you’re at this point. Keep you’re head up. The sun is rising soon again and the ocean will be blue again 🏴☠️
One of thee wisest things I read this year , thanks 🙏
I read this @4 am in the morning cause I couldn’t sleep cause I was feeling like I was in the dark ocean but thank you for the words it really make me sigh thank u

mind you, the people who go on cruises are the same ones that go “camping” in RVs
@@brownie3454Lol 😂😂 For real. 😅
Lol you're an idiot. The Captain is suppose to sail around the storm, not through it. The USS El Faro sank in the same waters just a couple years earlier in the same conditions
Why so much protection for billionaire conglomerates? How does that assist you? Suing a lot of times keeps huge companies from completely getting away with dereliction of duties. You say that until you find out Norwegian knew that the storm was dangerous and put pressure on the captain to keep up with the schedule. We really don't know.
My grandmother used to say the sea is angry when the water was rough, and I enjoyed it.
she was right 😏
Wow, can you tell a story! 😂
I used to work for NCLA and the ship I was on, we ended up in a really bad ocean storm that took us out of the way from our usual ports of call, into a remote Island area in Hawaii. Very memorable times ❤😢🎉
This video left me with far more questions than answers, no resemblance to anything in Frozen, & I had to watch the whole video just to understand the beginning. Of course people with no training or experience would threaten a class action lawsuit for force majeure. 😂
Looks great! I went to sea for 7 years. This is pretty rough looking. I always slept well in bad weather.
It's crazy to think that centuries ago, traveling by sea was a necessary evil and people were rightfully wary and afraid of the dangers of the mysterious oceans. Now, we do it for fun 😂
I'm watching this now as I was on this cruise, and had a dream about it last night... Still hasn't put me off cruising, sure it could happen at anytime in those waters, especially in the depths of winter..
Thats a good time to cruise come to Florida when it is more active in the summer and you might change your mind. Haha then again you are watching this while you are on a cruise so it just tells us what kind of mental case you are lol hahah
I'm sorry 😅, but you said this is common on cruises during the winter? 😱 I honestly thought it'd be safer due to Hurricane seasons around late summer and fall? 😬
@@foxyalchemist8271 it's not common, it's just not particularly rare or unheard of. Hurricane season is different because you know they're coming several days in advance. Sometimes we can watch it form all the way from the coast of Africa and travel to the gulf. Winter has storms but most aren't this bad. The difference is that these storms form right there out of basically nothing, sometimes getting pretty strong in just a few hours. The gulf of Mexico and surrounding water stays relatively warm throughout the winter, as does the air. Cruising in January is amazing because it's not too hot once you get to Mexico or the Bahamas- air Temps are in the high 70s, low 80s, and that's basically the only time the humidity is relatively low (if you're from the Midwest or something, you'll still feel it quite badly. I'm from Florida and it's what I'm pretty sure heaven feels like). But a front of cold air, like a burst, will move into that area and mix with the very warm air and you get a storm. Most are just regular- I've been through a couple of rough nights crossing the gulf in January, but it's usually not quite that bad. But sometimes the result is a stronger storm, like a mini tropical storm, and you just have to deal with it. On the water, things can change fast. I'm disgusted that grown people were too stupid to understand that a cruise line can't control the weather and sued.
@foxyalchemist8271 It's typical of the North Sea, one of the most dangerous in the world.
That camera looked perfectly steady, so the ship must have been stable.
I watched this BECAUSE I am afraid of the sea.

I have been on 3 cruises all were great and smooth sailing and one of them was on one of the most treacherous waters in the world. I’m well aware of the risks like flying but the chances of dying on our roads are much higher.
are you basing that off total deaths or by ratio? cause i guarantee there a shit ton more cars than airplanes or boats
We won’t die in the water tho
I'm amazed at how steady that camera is! Bravo 👏 I'm glad everyone is safe!
You couldn't give me a free ticket on it. The first three seconds was all I needed to see.
I'm afraid of the sea. I'm watching this.
I've never heard something so incredibly privileged as "I'm so traumatized because the weather got bad that I will never go on a several thousand dollar vacation where my every need and want is met and I get to escape the stress of my boring life. Also, I'm suing. How dare the cruise line let a storm happen!" People are so gross and need to wake the hell up, get some perspective on reality.

@runner2008 the smaller boat would've sunk, as the waves would've inundated it.
This is why the prayer and final wishes is " fair winds and following seas " . You don't want anyone to have to experience this kind of storm !
I'd have loved that. The sea looked brilliant.
This is insane. File a law suit! Smh. How in the world is one captain responsible for a natural disaster. You guys made it back safe. I’d rather be alive with Seasickness than to be dead. If you ask me the captain and crew members should have been celebrated.

Right. How can you sue someone because of an act of nature?? Some people are the worst.
For real
File a lawsuit……get a grip! It’s like that American couple who are suing after being on a cruise and a visit to White Island in New Zealand. The eruption happened, they were injured but lived. They want to sue because it was dangerous 😂. They, and they alone, made the choice to visit a live volcano but refuse to accept personal responsibility…..about as American as you can get.
I really appreciate the ambience of my innermost anger and the rythmic wail of the wind shouting out the tempestuous calls to the otherness that is my sirens song.♤
Anyone else feel like they want to be there? I want to feel what the outside is like for a moment
It would be a moment before you were washed overboard by a wave. Even if you had a harness securing you to the deck railings there’s still a chance of getting swept over then dragged along dangling from the side of the ship…
@@paulwheeler8913That would truly be the stuff of nightmares for me. I have a fear of open water, and the thought of being on the deck of a ship in a raging storm fills me with terror!
The sea is very scary knowing the majority of earth is surrounded by water seas and oceans..
Knowing how big waves can actually get is also scary.. some ppl like captains and crew are meant to be at sea try telling them to get knee jobs that their jobs cruises and sea fairing is too too dangerous. Stay safe out there ✌️

God can you imagine what a freaking nightmare it is to live out in the ocean and have this cruise sail over
I can’t imagine how people still jump on cruise ships. From the sickness that spreads throughout ships like wildfire, to disasters like this and then, the whole Covid thing where people were literally trapped in boats for months. I can think of a lot of ways to spend my vacation and my hard earned money and none of them include on a cruise
Thank goodness y’all made it out of there.
Maybe you should give one a try. Then you could see for yourself rather than try to imagine why people still jump on cruise ships. I have been on 50+ and have only come across widespread sickness once. It was as a result of seas like seen in this video. I also do land vacations. It is difficult to compare them one against another except maybe for the food, which in general is way better on a ship. The sea is captivating. Once you experience the open sea she stays with you forever.
I agree
In '91 I was on one of Carnival's oldest ships. They were retrofitted tankers and didn't have the stabilizers the newer ships had. We skirted around a Category 1 hurricane. Slightly rough seas, walking tilted and items falling happened. There were sawdust piles everywhere from vomiting passengers but that was the worst of it.
WoW!! From palm trees to freezing spray in half a day. That is one fast ship!!
I WONDER how many COUPLES during that STORM said....if WE,RE going Down I,m going down STROKING 😂
This is the strength of God
Actually, the strength of low pressure.
We think we are so modernized, but the sea and nature can still humble the proudest man and his machines.
I have never been on a cruise ship before. I have seen many videos of ships in stormy seas. Captains of any ocean going vessel would rather take their chances in open seas than remain docked at a port.
I can only imagine what the passengers went through. It must’ve been a rough time. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured.
It is not true that a captain would rather be on open seas during a storm. Case in point: the Edmund Fitz and the ship that reported her missing were both headed to safe port. Had she made it, her entire crew would be enjoying old age today, instead of floating in a cold watery grave at the bottom of Lake Superior. And before you mention that lake Superior is not an ocean, I challenge you to hold your breath while flying over it.
that banging in the background would bloody annoy me more than the storm
It was so scarry... I hope every alright
I never knew the ocean could be so beastly. You are at its mercy when it is like that 😮
Only those who grow up near the ocean truly understand the danger it poses and the respect it deserves.
Id love to be on that boat it wouldnt scare me i wouldnt sit on a plane but a boat on water like that id love it
You may think im crazy but id love to be tucked up in bed on the ship watching that storm feeling cozy lol 😅

I live by the sea. It fascinates me just as much now as it did when I was a child. I have the greatest respect for it. However, the thought of being on a ship surrounded by people is not for me. Most of my family go on cruises and they always ask us to go along, but we always decline!
Sorry if i am a bit lost at the beginning here , were you saying the 22 that died were on your ship or another. I would hope you wrote a letter to the shipbuilders that used their skills & craftsmanship because without it & the brave Captain & crew i doubt you would have survived that ordeal. The really crazy part of this video is knowing that some people voluntarily get on a cruise ship, packing themselves together with thousands of others to sail into some nearby locations, spend two hours there and pretend that means they’ve actually seen a place.. eat shitty buffets and go to lame parties onboard and then go back home, and tell each other they’ve been on a vacation 😂
THIS
There are cruises that leave you in places for several days, or you can cruise to a place spend a few weeks there and cruise back. The cheap 1 week cruises where you stop for a few hours this day, a few hours that day, and then come back are cheap for a reason, and most people never get out on the ocean outside of these cruises so it can be an experience for people the first time.
There are people who go to all inclusive resorts in Cuba/Mexico ect…never leave the resort, the only locals they run into work on the resort…but then claim their travellers who have seen other countries…buddy, you’ve seen a resort packed with other tourists…you haven’t seen anything!
@@The_prince2061 a lot of Australian bogan rednecks do that in close by south East Asian countries.

@@Jamie-bg3zb When I was on active duty the USS El Faro use to bring our equipment to Kuwait in the early 2000's then she was called the Northern Lights. I hate sea duty I dodge it at all cost because of ships masters like these guys. He should have headed for calm waters and waited her out, he had time to get on the outskirts of the storm.
I was on this cruise with you and happened to search for anything to show my friends what we sailed through. I can't believe the butt-hats commenting here who are 100% Clueless. Here's what they don't know.
1) The ship waited too long to evacuate us at GSC. That's a tender port. It was an insanely crazy ride back to the ship. People who were on the ship stood on their balconies and prayed for us. We were in the Haven, and some filmed ourc tender back not sure if we would even make it.
2) The storm was forecasted well. NCL ignored it and sailed through, despite knowing the risks. Pretty much EVERY OTHER CRUISE LINE sailed AROUND it.
3) We spent an entire night at about a 12 degree list. Not a PEEP from the captain.
4) In fact, updates from the Capt were few and far between. All he kept saying was that the weather was worse than expected. BS. How were the Breakaway and Gem the ONLY ships not to adjust course, if that was the case.
5) NCL never revealed a dancer at Cirque fell on her head during a performance and they stopped the performance. This was 100% due to rough seas. Yet, NCL claimed no one was injured.
6) It was so bad, ice was thick INSIDE the balcony room sliders. Thick.
7) The lobby was FULL of pax sleeping in their life jackets. That's how afraid people were.
8) No one told the pax when we would be docking when we returned to NYC. We waited ages, even with priority disembarkation. We learned it was because the ice was so thick on the outdoor decks that they had to spray them down with hot water and knock down icicles.
8) The offer from NCL to those sailing was abysmal. We bought a Vibe cabana (about $350) for the week. All outdoor decks (where the vibe is located) were closed after Day 2. Me: how about a pro-rated refund for that? NCL: WHAT? no. It's nonrefundable. Too bad, so sad. Sorry the Vibe was closed for 5 out of 7 days. Tough. They only offered 25% FCC based on fare paid. Even though more than 25% of our cruise was affected. That's why people sued.
I could go on, but I'm sure all the buttwipes who are blaming pax and defending NCL are long gone (and good riddance).
I am terrified 😮 my respect to the oceans.
So why was it frozen on the outside? If you’re sailing through a tropical area?

Is there flood in sea?
Why the hell would any cruise ship sail into a gigantic storm like that?! Like you can just go around or hide in a port or literally anything but go into the storm???
In January….New York City…
Truthfully, a cruise ship that large would have likely destroyed any port it tried to take shelter in. I don't see that they had much choice but to head out to sea. Those vessels are made to withstand some unbelievable conditions... as seen in this video. Clearly, the poster wasn't having any difficulty keeping a level video rolling, even though the ocean was roiling. That's all thanks to the ship's construction.
How gigantic. I remeber being on a Norwegian Ship crossing from Bergen, Norway to Newcastle, England. Just as the engines started the Capatin announced 'Welcome and that sea conditions out beyond the Fiords was strom Force Nine. I looked on the nearby storm chart and thought the captain was just reporting weather as if the weather was some where else or somewhere some way away from our route. It wasn't the captian who was wrong. It was me as sure enough the ship turned our in to the open North Atlantic and my supper wanted to go on deck and go over board. Since then I always think of the Norwegian Ship Captains as guys at the wheel smoking a pipe with their sea beards and souwester hats ready at all times to sing a good song whilst theu head in sea that give others nightmares. What you may think of as gigantic a Norwegian Ship's Captain may think of as just a run of the mill sea swell with a good breeze. The sea in the video looks just like the North Atlantic out of yatching season. Generally the Captain will have up todate wind speed monitoring equipment and may steer through the areas he deems safeish. The imagers are not of an exceptional storm. The Norse Sea really is like that a lot of the Autumn and Winter months.
The passengers SHOULD all be sending the captain a fruit basket every Christmas thanking him profusely for the extra year they spent with their loved ones instead of in a watery grave.
Well done, brave captain and crew. I'm so sorry people can be so delusional about vacationing on the open OCEAN.
This is the problem with cruising. Hit and miss and in this case a write-off. I'll spend my money elsewhere.
Same.
