I’m hoping to give my friend a chess set, board and pieces fully made by me for his wedding gift. I need to level up my turning skills to do this, but I have hope! Many thanks for the video 🙏
You can do it!

Thanks for sharing, Mike. Your videos are always worth watching. There is almost always something new in them. Have a great New Years and stay safe.🙂🙂
What an interesting but great way to make an amazing chess set.
Just made a board and would love to make a set.
Have subscribed and will watch more of your videos.

Excellent! Cheers, Mate.
I‘m from Europe can I use birch wood instead?
Probably. I suspect European birch is harder than our river birch which is not that hard.
I love the video, in stead of the spindle gouge wouldn't a razor or a exacto knife work just as well?
No! Those are not woodturning tools and would be dangerous to use with a lathe.
Thanks for sharing Mike. I always enjoy your videos. 🕶🇺🇸
Thanks, Steven. I appreciate your support.
1:40 in I love it
Mike, I love the fact that you use a longer screw on the mandrel so you can adjust the projection length.
Very interesting, great demo. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
The first thing I ever turned on a lathe was a chess set. I don’t believe any of them are exactly the same but hey it was the first thing I ever turned lol. Great practice turning chess pieces
Yes, a great skill builder.
I totally agree Mike. Hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year coming!
I always say they’re not supposed to be exactly the same, just so you know it’s hand turned 😀
thank you mr mike for all the insperation
Thank you Mike for all your tips on preparing and turning the chess pieces but also on the finishing pastes . May 2023 keep you in good health, the rest should follow.
Thanks, Alan. You are right about our health - the big unknown we have little control over.
Your pennies are copper clad zinc so not as much weight as a slug of steel. Nice tip on making the tool handle ferrule from a bearing. Look for diatomaceous earth where they sell Pool Supplies; its used as a pool water filter material, same principal as charcoal filtering water.
I learn something new every day! But pennies still make a good weight. My research leads me to believe that the treated DE used for pool filtration should not be used for abrasive paste. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Mike!
You bet!
I wonder if pouring lead free soldier would work well for weighing down the pieces?
Yes. Check out my Playlist on turning chess pieces and watch the one on Kings. I demonstrate pouring lead.
Too much talking.....
Thanks for the specific feedback. I am sure your woodturning videos are much better.
