I just sold my XFX R9 290X 4GB Double Dissipation for $150CAD, yesterday. It was sitting in my closet doing nothing. I paid $230 for it in 2013. People are still selling them over here for almost $300. I can't justify ripping people off for that much. I listed it for $100, but in 15 minutes I was offered $150 if I'd ensure he could pick it up within the hour!
It is still desperate out there. Love the channel. Cheers from Vancouver!

1GB gfx cards obviously are still very useful, just not in systems for playing PC games. But for office PCs with an F SKU CPU or most AMD CPUs they are fine. They are also fine for making a retro gaming PC running Retroarch or Launchbox that has been loaded up with games for MAME, SNES, Genesis, PS1, PS2, Gameboy, Saturn, Dreamcast, etc.

I've been limiting myself to 4gb GPUs, 1gb and 2gb cards are out for me.
Lower end GPUs seem to be slowly coming down in price, but mid to high end cards aren't moving. I think we're in that stage where ppl are hanging on to their asking price but hopefully that will change over the next few months.
I've been able to snag a couple of gtx 960 4gb and gtx 970s for 1080p gaming systems. Hard to get anything higher at a reasonable price.
Have you had luck building higher end systems with a budget GPU such as a gtx 970 to hold them over with 1080p gaming until prices return to reasonable levels to pick up a high-end GPU ? I was considering buying a 9900k system with this in mind.
Update: The auction I was watching went up too high. The complete build would have gone up to £790 and I don't think I'd be able to sell a gtx 970 build for £900 regardless of the other parts so I didn't go for it, so back on the lookout for a reasonable parts to pair the gtx 970 with.

I've had people ask me to help them out with basic PC's for netflix type stuff and I'd be fine with sticking a 1GB card in those sorts of builds. 1st, 2nd Gen i5 with a 1GB card for movies and browsing. Even if the market crashes im wondering how good the mining cards will be? Ive checked out some mining vids and the cards get flogged 24/7. Lots of overheating, thermal pad and paste replacement and fan replacement. I have been hearing more and more from people struggling to get by hosed by used minng cards. I think Bry doing more content addressing this with solutions would be great, btw. The thing is cards with gddrx runs at very hot temperatures 24/7 and once they are sold by miners they are pretty much done. Dont fall on that trap just but the onese non x based.

    • @frankstared
      @frankstared 2 роки тому +1

There is also the fact that while knowledgeable and well-financed miners may indeed under-volt their cards for longevity and keep them meticulously maintained, regardless the engineering tolerances (i.e., capacitors, etc,) of the components will eventually fail and the buyer is not only taking that chance it won't be them but also in the entire process they are in effect financing and facilitating mining itself, even when we know how hard it is on the environment, etc. It is extremely troubling because those who can least afford it are the ones who (really through no fault of their own) are in effect financing these mining pyramid schemes. It is insidious and invidious.

Pity with that 260X. Used to have the 1GB version and sure, for some games the 1GB was a stop sign (eg. Dishonored 2) but other games that weren't so memory hungry like Witcher 3 or KC:D actually ran quite great with textures turned to minimum. With some stutter maybe but still totally comparable to a 750 Ti. Some ancient 2011 games like Dishonored and Portal 2 were even possible for 4K/60fps :D - which you just can't do with the 750 because it doesn't have display outputs for that :D

Since you got me into flipping PCs, I've found a nice niche in my local market for the lower end as no-one seems to have a lot to spend. The 1Gb GTX 750 has actually been something I look for as I pair that with a 1st gen i7 and a 900p monitor for a great little cheap gaming PC. Many of my buyers have been using crappy laptops for gaming so even the lowly 1Gb card feels like jumping to hyperspace for them. Also, for really old games like Runescape 3 (which has a thriving community even today, and a market for people grinding and selling in-game items) the 1Gb GDDR5 cards are ideal starting points and kick a GT710s arse all day long, lol.

Just before the GPU crisis hit, I was able to pick up an 8GB RX580 for $100 slightly used. Right after the RTX 2xxx series came out, I picked up an almost new RTX 1080ti for under $300 because the guy who just bought it 2 weeks before was able to pick up a 2080. I like 1gb cards, personally, just because there are so many of them you can get for pretty much nothing that'll play e-sports titles. But I mean that's literally for personal use, because I'll sit there and tweak settings forever to make something work right and I'm cool with like 720p on a cheap card. Totally get not picking them up yourself when it comes to selling the PCs, since most people will just run everything stock, including graphics settings, so they'd probably have bad experiences with 1080p monitors.

Hello, have You ever had a CPU preventing the pc from powering on?
I dont mean not posting, i mean the fans not starting and everything. I have a B450-A Pro mobo (which i know works) and this Ryzen 9 3950x with a missing pin. With other cpus the pc works perfectly fine. Without any cpu the pc powers on and cpu debug LED lights up (...well, obviously). But when this cpu is in, the pc doent do anything at all.
Im probably gonna try to get an extra pin and put it in the mobo but i thought id share this problem and ask about it because its really weird.

I have been noticing new gpus are slowly coming down. Computer alliance is seling the 6600xt for $899 and the 6600 for $849 which makes a pretty good deal if u are going to do a new gaming build..I have been sitting on some good parts for a i5-10600k build and I have the z590 gigabyte motherboard. samsung 980 nvme hard drive and 16 gig kit of denominator ram.

This week I managed to get 2 GT 1030s. One was GDDR4 and the other GDDR5, both Gigabyte branded. The results from Heaven Benchmark were really different. Do you use the GDDR4 ones for entry level gaming builds?

    • @techyescity

Use them both, the D4 isn't as good as the D5, but as long you just call it entry level and don't get peoples hopes up then they can make for really cheap tidy rigs.

It's a lot harder to find Intel CPUs and motherboards gen 6-9. And it can also be hard to find working gen 4 motherboards. I have no problems to find RAM. I also started to use pci-e to m.2 adapters for SSD.

I'd buy a 1GB card to screw around with I'd say but not for $30. If I were to sell one in a PC it'd have to be paired with something extremely low end (1st gen i5 or an APU) and for under like $75. A R7 260 1GB should be able to run any game from pre-2015 and most indie games even today.
Now that I think about it can't a 260 do Dual Graphics with a lot of APU's? I'd love to screw around with that.
