If there's one thing watching these videos has taught me, it's that no matter how many people say it how often: Not everybody can be a broadcaster. I didn't even set out to make a streaming a full time job - I was just hoping to turn my hobby, the thing I do the absolute most with my free time into a little supplementary income, maybe make some more internet friends and share the journey of my gaming with other, like-minded people who might appreciate it. Good lord, I had no idea how lofty a goal that was. It's hard to take seriously how hard broadcasting is to make into a money-making venture when even small streamers can sometimes make it look absurdly easy...until you try it yourself, and see just how difficult and positively soul-breaking it actually can be. To those who do make it work...I salute you.
Well, not everybody has a georgoius face or body and like they say, 85% of the population is physically ugly and has a voice that sounds naturally god-aweful and whiney to the viewer! I give phraise to the 15% of the population that is blessed by God Almighty to have a beautiful body, beautiful physical features, and a beautiful voice that the population either loves or envies!!!! Those 15% of the people have it made and are able to do things like act in Hollywood, do livestreaming and make UA-cam videos and gain loads and loads of followers, no matter what! You can say those 15%'ers are known as the Elites of the world!!!!

Been living off streams for a while because of a really good contract that I actually had my lawyer remake. Company said yes, I said yes, it's been a really good year. Amazing video and it's nice to see stuff I can relate to since most of the content is to people that are starting out, and us in the middle feel kinda left out. This inspired me to use a bit of my money towards my youtube channel, maybe a nice editor could help me out :)
I started watching a streamer play a game where you need every millimeter of screen space. It's called Cultist Simulator. you place cards on a table (all virtual) and there are so many of them, the spread gets huge! the streamer isn't using a webcam and my thought is sure it would be nice to see his face, but honestly then I either wouldn't be able to see some of the cards or he'd be down space he really needs to spread them out or everything would be smaller and harder to read/follow. So for that game at least I agree.

'spend your money on growth not equipment' - while sitting in a room filled with equipment so you can barely see the walls. Like I get the sentiment, but stream quality, camera and mic quality, if you're in the low end of the barrel can definitely make a difference in retaining viewers. Personally, if I check out a stream and the mic quality is garbage, chances are I won't spend much time in the stream unless I'm there solely for gameplay that I can't get anywhere else. Setting up a paid editor or creative workforce after just 1 month of exponential growth seems like a premature approach, I would think that saving the majority of the money while spending the next months reaching out to potential collaborators and discussing fee's and workflow is the more sensible approach - but perhaps that was implicit in what you meant and you just tried to keep it short.
agreed, Mic quality is paramount. doesn't matter how good the streamer is otherwise, if the audio is bad it can be painful for most people to stick around. though I feel it's kinda on us as viewers to report the issue before scurrying off. most are willing to fiddle with settings to try to get it right. a lot of the time though it just comes down to the mic itself. If nothing else we can try to get the current issue minimized. Most viewers, I find, aren't willing to provide feedback at all and that gets those of us that stream annoyed. We can't fix what we don't know about. as a PSA: don't use integrated microphones, because they are garbage. don't use a laptop mic, don't use a webcam mic. most headset mics(among these the qualities vary greatly) aren't great either, but they're definitely more often than not, better than the other two I just mentioned. You will pay A LOT of money for a GOOD mic, there just is no way around it unfortunately.
I think he more meant don't spend it all on equipment that seems cool but isn't really necessary...spend it on the things that will actually make a big difference...for some people that might be a better mic, maybe for others it's getting an artist for emotes, maybe for some it's advertisements. For example, if i made enough i might get a better face cam as my current one is just what's built into my laptop...or maybe a better headset than the $30 i have, only because i think those things would actually make a big difference in my stream quality tho.
There is a big difference between a $30 mic and a $100 mic, but there is virtually no difference between a $100 mic and a $1500 mic over a compressed live stream or youtube video. Cameras are no different. A $150 gopro 5 black isn't gunna do you much worse as a face cam than a red raven with master prime lenses. Shooting a movie, yes. Live streaming yourself playing fortnite, no. Spend wisely.
LOL @ that outtro... "I think I just peed" Flawless, sir. Absolutely love that you can enjoy your own moments and don't take yourself too seriously. Bravisimo!
"What's up everybody?" - Peter McKinnon One of my personal favorite cinematographers & an amazing photographer. Hopefully, he hears about that little attempt cause it was well done.
Real talk thank you so much for your videos. Starting out has been daunting to say the least and having these videos is a really good way to get an idea of what i'm doing. Much love bro!
Love the part about where you hired an editor and you were honest. If I ever got to the point of making money, I'm hiring an editor because I cannot stand editing in the long run lol
I love the fact you talk about stuff as a businessman, and not just a gamer. Been going to school to learn marketing over the last few years. I've been working on trying to develop a brand and I started with Instagram, and at this point I wanna expand to other platforms to increase my reach so the fact you address this and other smart financial investments over just spending for spending is great. Definitely use the advice from this video to help establish my next reach branch with the twitch streaming.
Work on your social ignore all these other comments and build a community. Find 50 people that will always tune in and you will be on your way to getting partnered.
In an older video he recommended thinking of spending money for something that will be fun for you and your audience. If you wanna buy something ask yourself beforehand: "Will this improve my relation to the viewers?" or "Can I implement this in a fun way". E.g. might be a funny wig or some nice way to put a greenscreen to use as mention in this vid.
Number 5... I do that with everything which is one of the reasons I'm thinking about starting a stream because I play a LOT of video games, and I am always trying to improve, and become better at what I can do. I think streaming would be a gem for me. If it becomes something profitable great, if not, I think I'd have fun building on it.
This is the first time I'm really cracking down on commenting. I love the advice you have given and I have made questions in the back of my mind prior to watching this video. I'm barely starting up twitch, and I have made few videos (under 3) of gameplay for this month of October 2020. I'm not sure if I do have any questions now since I'm new; I'm not sure what to expect. when you started talking about the fourth advice, I'm now mentally becoming prepared incase something like this DOES happen and especially with the growth of people. After you talking about companies who would want to sponsor you and what to look for, I will keep all of this in mind. I'm subscribing and wanted to say thank you for sharing your advice with me and others.
Real quick I don't know that posting weekly is necessarily required for UA-cam (8:05). I recently saw a video from Video Creators who talked about this specifically. It's more about the value you provide. UA-cam looks at user signals. The longer your video retains a viewer (and subsequently the more viewers watch + how long your videos keep the viewer on UA-cam) the more likely they are to recommend the video because that's their number one goal. UA-cam has grown to be less about metadata and more about how users use the platform. I never saw your videos recommended until I started searching for tutorials on streaming and watched a couple of your videos in a row. Once UA-cam noticed I watched three of your videos in a row, they started recommending you on my home page and next to other videos more and more. Eventually that lead to me subscribing. I'm loving your videos so far, and they've really helped me take steps towards better and more serious streaming. I'm glad UA-cam recommended you, because you've got the best content on Streaming. Not challenging you or anything, because I think you're right to an extent where (especially if you're starting out) quantity is helpful for growth, just not because it's best for UA-cam's algorithm. Quantity helps you refine your skills as a creator (editing, shooting, etc.) because it forces you to repeat a task over and over. It also helps train your viewers when to expect a video. If they really like what you have to offer, they'll know when to expect something from you. So quantity is important, just not because of the algorithm. It's helpful for personal development and creating a ritual that your viewers learn to expect from you.
My problem is.. I never get viewers so I don't talk too much (just react to the game) and I can see every once a while I get 1 or 2 viewers but they will leave after a short time.. I can't talk that much to myself lol other than just react to what happens on the game
I think the biggest thing Heller has stressed but most of the people that comment "I cant do this cause of my size". Dont grow on twitch, grow on UA-cam.. start a channel.. of anything.
Personally I’ve noticed that even idle chatter is better than no chatter. Talk about your day, make silly jokes about the game you’re playing, just be silly. People tend to find it amusing.
The intro montage has a lot of familiar things, plus in most of the local channels I found while watching tech stuff always use the exact phrase "welcome back to my channel" that has been recycled a lot (which is what I am trying to avoid) -- especially when I plan to stream in Esperanto at Twitch.
I know this video is a year old, but it’s still and always will be relevant for content creators and streamers. I started streaming on Twitch about 2 months ago, I have a hard time opening up but I’ve been working really hard to personally work on myself, and I’ve managed to go from 2/3 viewers to 25-35 viewers per stream!! Amazing people, thank you bro for this video, your so inspiring man seriously. I don’t mean this comment to get hundreds of likes I don’t expect a response lol, I’m seriously just thanking you and reminding you that YOU are helping creators like ME do better. And I respect that. Thank you ❤️💙
So I'm not going to lie, I just started streaming and building up for about a week and hoping to grow and I have been watching a lot of your videos, so... Thank you for all your help! You've been a huge help so far!
I have just started setting up my UA-cam and Twitch accounts, and coming across your channel has been a blessing on this planet. Your advice is sound and will definitely be kept close to heart. Subscribed :D
Interesting video. I find it fascinating how people don't come to a stream for the actual gameplay, but for the chat. I streamed the other day and although a few people were into the game, the chat was talking about all kinds of games and other general discussions that have nothing to do with the game. xD
He might not want people to do streams for the wrong reasons.I feel like he’s wants to teach streamers to stream for their passions and the rest will fall in ace
I’ve been watching a person on twitch who is really on the soap box like you were talking about and while I enjoy hearing her perspective I cannot watch the whole stream because it’s too tense. I tend to be on twitch in my down time and I don’t want that time to only be consumed with serious topics that while they are important just are too much after a certain amount of time to be able to just chill and hangout in the stream.
I want to be known, haave my own brand , be a figure for people, stream stream stream , make videos , meet people , be part of a community of other streamers to work with th eachother , travel , go to events + everything else ♡
I'd actually like more in depth info on how or when to hire an editor. Things like: when you "Hire" them are you considered a business and you need to fill out a W-2 with this person? Or is it more like a personal agreement? And when should you/could you pheasably hire an editor? (I understand this will take personal judgement and might be harder to answer)
The only reason I plan spend money of a PC is because I enjoy and do my own editing, it would really cut down on render time, open up more cinematic approaches, and just overall up the visual quality of my videos. Other than that, invest right back into growth.
cleio81 you need to start writing your own songs. If your singing voice is good enough that people will listen to your karaoke, original music is the next stage.
An awesome video as ever Harris! 😁 Your content is always educational, engaging, entertaining & fun to check out. Thank you as always for the honest & solid advice man 👊
you mentioned danucd, i was wondering if maybe you know how she got her camera/lighting to look so beatiful, my lighting is like real in your face whereas her lighting is really like dark and shadowy and lovely
This is my first video from you, and I was about to turn it off in the first 5 seconds, but then I got incredulous you were serious, and sure enough, you confirmed you were mocking that kind of intro. Good show. Good advice here. Subbed.
I'm so happy I found you. I'm young enough in the world of content creation that I haven't had anything to lose. I have everything to gain, all the time to do it in, and YOU have played a big part in the little successes I've had so far! So, thank you!!
Could you maybe elaborate a bit on #4: invest in channel growth? Is it purely hiring an editor, or are there other ways to do this? What does Sam do for you, does he like cut out mistakes, make this vid look more high-quality and such? I intend to stream and make YT vids as a hobby of some sorts; for fun : ) Making money would be a 'nice to have', but not the focus. Still, I figured I should ask this!

I used to mix "Kurz" (short) up with "Kunst" (art), so when I first saw the name I started thinking really deeply about it like, 'Wow, that means spoken art... like poetry. So deep, I wonder why they chose that name...' and then i realised I spent five minutes pondering about a name I got wrong. Yay?
@@sketchingstudio5552 The funniest thing about german is that some of our longest words are just short words combined. Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän. It is Donau, the river, Dampfschiff = Steamboat, Fahrt = ride (but Dampfschifffahrt is a word combination of Dampfschiff and Fahrt inside a very long word combination), Gesellschaft = society/community, Kapitän = captain. Donausteamboatridecommunityscaptain. This is actually a word. German works like this in most cases. German is indeed very hard to learn

Question: I recently created my own Twitch account, but I'm not really interested in using it as my primary source of income. I just want to stream/upload stuff there and here on UA-cam, and maybe make a little extra cash on the side (from things like donations, subscriptions, etc.). Will these warning still apply to me?

For example, if i made enough i might get a better face cam as my current one is just what's built into my laptop...or maybe a better headset than the $30 i have, only because i think those things would actually make a big difference in my stream quality tho.
Philip Mac Grego
Philip Mac Gregor
Mm
There is a big difference between a $30 mic and a $100 mic, but there is virtually no difference between a $100 mic and a $1500 mic over a compressed live stream or youtube video.
Cameras are no different. A $150 gopro 5 black isn't gunna do you much worse as a face cam than a red raven with master prime lenses.
Shooting a movie, yes. Live streaming yourself playing fortnite, no.
Spend wisely.
You know it’s a good tutorial when there’s red and blue lights in the back
LOL @ that outtro... "I think I just peed" Flawless, sir. Absolutely love that you can enjoy your own moments and don't take yourself too seriously. Bravisimo!
Damn i jumped from 0 avg viewers to 3! With ur tips video and now ur helping me with understanding the business side of twitch thank you 🙏🏻
Keep killing it, Harris. Great vid! 11:26 - Laugh at yourself. Perfect.
"What's up everybody?" - Peter McKinnon
One of my personal favorite cinematographers & an amazing photographer.
Right!
Besides hiring an editor, what are some other ways to put revenue towards growth?
I second this question!
Same
Work on your social ignore all these other comments and build a community.
Instagram manager that would help you upload a lot of content on it
Number 5... I do that with everything which is one of the reasons I'm thinking about starting a stream because I play a LOT of video games, and I am always trying to improve, and become better at what I can do. I think streaming would be a gem for me. If it becomes something profitable great, if not, I think I'd have fun building on it.
Hey what do you think about webcams
Learning so much from this channel, you’re like the peter McKinnon of marketing! Thanks for all you do man!
That's a rough feeling when your first video hits pretty good and then everything after that flops.
UA-cam: post once a week
Mark Rober: nah, I’m good.
You are a rare and kind person to share your insights! I’m just getting started- this info was invaluable. Thank you so much!!!
good luck to the boys who are trying to grow!
Thx, you too!
Yo but like what about the girls tho 😳
@@jalishapaz Agree!
@@jalishapaz good luck to girls :)
I can't talk that much to myself lol other than just react to what happens on the game
try adding other interest/aspects of your life to the stream.
People tend to find it amusing.
haha, that ending made me laugh out loud :-D Thanks for the video mann. I don't know if I can plan so fare ahead but I will try.
Music...THATS WHERE I RECOGNIZE YOU FROM!!! Haha, that's awesome! Hope your still playing and writing!!
The intro montage has a lot of familiar things, plus in most of the local channels I found while watching tech stuff always use the exact phrase "welcome back to my channel" that has been recycled a lot (which is what I am trying to avoid) -- especially when I plan to stream in Esperanto at Twitch.
"Be wary of big corp contracts" lol don't need to when I don't have any contracts so that was ez pz
I like that you said to think critically about these tips and how / whether they apply to you. and the warning about contracts.
I'm still waiting for that blow up aspect. It's been 4 years 😂
Hey man, want to just say I appreciate these types of videos for us new streamers! Helps out a lot!
I appreciate the effort you put into styling your hair for these vids. 👏🏽
Finally someone who understand the effort needed for that shit it's hard I remember having to straighten my hair for like 2 hours every day
I was honestly expecting to hear the same 5 things everyone else talks about. Solid advice, my dude! Thank you!
Thank you ❤️💙
00:32 guessing intro references in order:
- Vsauce... Michael here
- Phillip DeFranco
- Nadeshot
- Peter Mckinnon
That was an awesome intro
I can't wait to see the personal YT channel! Your content is consistently amazing
I streamed the other day and although a few people were into the game, the chat was talking about all kinds of games and other general discussions that have nothing to do with the game. xD
I wish he'd make a video about how one goes about getting a company to offer a contract.
Man did the Nadeshot “how the fudge you doin” the Peter McKinnon “BWHATS UP EVERYBODY” 😂
3:00 i love that you're sharing personal experience with us, thank you
How did you find an editor that you trusted?
How, Sway?
You have helped me so much! I started my stream 3 days ago and I have learned so much about setting up a stream.

(I understand this will take personal judgement and might be harder to answer)
oh are contracting them for work. The taxes are on them, you aren't hiring a editor 9/10 you are contracting one
"Kurz gesagt" is German and literally means "shortly said" aka in a Nutshell.
thank you so much sir
The only reason I plan spend money of a PC is because I enjoy and do my own editing, it would really cut down on render time, open up more cinematic approaches, and just overall up the visual quality of my videos.
Other than that, invest right back into growth.
Very interesting. Thank you for the advice. Too bad my streams revolve around Twitch Sings, Karaoke essentially. Can't post that on UA-cam. T-T
Post it on youtube for exposure while you're not streaming
@@derrick7116 i would get copyright strikes and be forced to pull them down.
cleio81 you need to start writing your own songs. If your singing voice is good enough that people will listen to your karaoke, original music is the next stage.
As life goes on, I somehow always end up back to this video watching it over
An awesome video as ever Harris! 😁
Your content is always educational, engaging, entertaining & fun to check out.
Thank you as always for the honest & solid advice man 👊
you mentioned danucd, i was wondering if maybe you know how she got her camera/lighting to look so beatiful, my lighting is like real in your face whereas her lighting is really like dark and shadowy and lovely
I also want to know
Only know 2 of them, Peter Mckinnon and Michel from vsauce
Where did you source your editor from if you dont mind me asking Harris? Fiverr?
Yo homie funny running into you here lmao
@@Devi2100 hahahah hey dude! lol small internet :P
@@kineticninja7989 hahaha for real man.
Not going for a full time streamer my self but damn do all your tips help growing!
this came up in my autoplay, wow that was alot of energy for how early it is here in the intro haha, solid vid man!
“How the fudge you doing” is Nadeshot
You are the real MVP! I quit my job a few months ago to go full time on content creation and this stuff is really helpful!
8:25 That Moment when Harris Tries To pronounce a german Word 😅
"Kurz gesagt" are honestly two german Words. They literally translate to "shortly said" or aka "in a Nutshell".
Greetings from Germany ✌️
Could you maybe elaborate a bit on #4: invest in channel growth? Is it purely hiring an editor, or are there other ways to do this?
What does Sam do for you, does he like cut out mistakes, make this vid look more high-quality and such?
I intend to stream and make YT vids as a hobby of some sorts; for fun : ) Making money would be a 'nice to have', but not the focus. Still, I figured I should ask this!
How do I hire you for like 2 hours.....lol there is so much I would love to talk to you about.
Spend money on growth not equipment. I needed this 3 years ago 😂Harris you're amazing don't stop!
LiDuGaming if you watch this guy for advice you will never make it!!!! All you need is tim the tat mans 30 minute video and it sums up this whole guys UA-cam channel lmk if you read this
@@drowsy5879 I read it. Not a fan of tim thanks though.
„Kurzgesagt“ is a german word. Actually it is two words. „Kurz“ and „gesagt“ which translates to short and said.
German is indeed very hard to learn
this stream doctor channel is just fantastic. have learned a ton from your channel man. thank god for the YT algorithm that put you in my recommended! keep on keepin' on :^)
NadeShot- How the fudge you doin. HAHA I noticed that one right away, damn I miss Nade.

Been streaming 2 times (yesterday and the day before) and I got 3-5 viewers the whole streams, also got 4+ followers! I'm so happy
Question: I recently created my own Twitch account, but I'm not really interested in using it as my primary source of income. I just want to stream/upload stuff there and here on UA-cam, and maybe make a little extra cash on the side (from things like donations, subscriptions, etc.). Will these warning still apply to me?
The word "Kurzgesagt" is german an is translated to: "can be said shortend" or "said with few words"
Kurzgesagt = in a nutshell
Thank you for all your awesome tips and info so glad I follow you. I will be taking everything in board and applying it
"What's up everybody" Peter Mckinnon😁
Great video. Thank you for this. You probably get this a million times... However, What coloured lights are you using in the background?
