Be smart and install a tubular K member if you are going with Longtubes. It makes install and long-term maintenance on the clutch a non-issue it will allow you to easily unbolt one header to aid removal of the tranny for clutch replacement. Also #1 Word of advice if you are going to modify your ride....Learn to turn a wrench on it yourself. You will save a ton of money overpaying someone to install your go-fast parts!!
The whole point of buying a old 99-04 is the working on it aspect. They are fun reliable and fairly cheap to maintain. But the fun is doing the work your self or with friend or family.
I'm doing the"learning" part now. I have a friend with an '00 Crown Victoria and I have an '00 Grand Marquis. He's a mechanic, I'm a woodworker. He's helped me work on my car, I helped him change his intake manifold yesterday. It would have been more fun it it hadn't been ungodly hot outside, but now I know I can change mine. A few weeks ago I changed my upper plenum with a Trick Flow, almost entirely by myself. That woke my luxobarge up nicely. This may not sound like much to those used to working on cars, but it's been awesome. I'm just getting started.
@S Schu nah I don't do half of my own work. I don't trust myself when someone else knows how to do it faster and better. Worst part is I have a job with access to endless tools and lifts lol
Hi trying it again. Just bought a 2003 Mach 1 w long tube BBK headers. It needs a throw out bearing. Does anyone know if I’d have to drop the K member, just the headers or both to be able to change it? Hoping I won’t have to drop anything. Thanks
I be tried 3 different aftermarket coils and the real MSD coils have been ran extremely hard for 2 years and have blew out a plug and coil , fixed the head and the coil still working today 👍my thoughts are factory coils are 1st go to , but MSD coils are the best aftermarket for the SOHC , love the new edges
I just bought my first Mustang. Its 2001 Mustang cobra. Everything is stock, but it does have a mgw short throw in it. I want to put bbk long tubes, O/R H Pipe, and Borla tios on it. Would I have to put a new shifter in it when i do it?
Great video! My suggestions for first mod, bang for buck would be an off-road X or H pipe. I don’t think they sell them anymore but a used one should be easy to find still. Stuff I’ve never had luck with are: aftermarket clutch cables, always go with a Ford one and I’ve never had any success with aftermarket throttle bodies. They always had some sort of issues and I’d end up going back to stock. I wish the Tremec 3650 didn’t have the bell housing as part of the case. Would be so much easier swapping a clutch especially w/ long tubes. A 2V New Edge is a great car for someone getting into the hobby too. Lots of solid examples still available that won’t break the bank. So many parts and resources out there to help you build no matter what direction you want to go. I think their styling has aged well and they still look great, not dated at all
Got a question for ya about straight line solutions there $600 kit do they modify the stock hat by drilling a return port in it? Or do they tell u to buy aftermarket hat? I've got new ptfe lines and an fittings along with fuel filters and Fore rails.. Just wondering what SLS gives in there kit as far as the hat
From a previous video but I just ordered a mgw short throw for my 04, can't wait to get it in and see if I like it over the factory shifter. Feels like shifting a semi now with how much travel it has.
hey man I have pacesetters I was gonna install on my 01 GT. I don't know if the clutch was ever replaced but the body and motor only have 70k. Do you know how those work with clutch?
I have pacesetters on my 02 GT and replaced the clutch after the fact and never touched the headers. I did have to wiggle the trans off but that’s about it.
Definitely was replaced everyone does burnouts and drag racing in those small mustang even if it’s in mint condition and garage queen no clutch is lasting 70k miles in a perfomance car not even if it’s a spec 3 clutch I’ve seen guys replace them after like 10k miles but to be fair they had a ton of power in the car but thwt a why they installed the spec 3 because a stage 1 would just burn right out shortly
Ok so are you upgrading your clutch? I ask because my clutch is new (factory clutch). Im wanting long tube headers but don’t see the need in replacing a new clutch that I already have.
Nice video. I'm not at a point for installing a return fuel system but I dread that day because I've had to replace the fuel pump last year and it is no fun dropping the gas tank - especially since mine was full. Getting the tank off and back on can break the plastic nozzle on the filler if you're not very careful - I wish I had a hydraulic lift to do this job.
Great advice I have only owned my new edge for about 4 years have only upgraded parts of my suspension and Cooling system. Not got that far yet.. good to know
The Shelby 1000 uses WeaponX ignition coils. The coils you buy from the Ford dealer are not the same as the coils that they sell the car with OEM. The FORE innovation 2 pump returnless system is fine. The same system they have on the Ford Cobra Supercharged.... is also fine for past 800hp.
I don't think they're available anymore, but I have the SLP longtubes. They fit pretty nice from what I remember. I didn't install them myself. My 04 was only 2yrs old when I had them put on. I didn't trust myself at the time to do that. They're still on the car & have been perfect.
Cool video. I appreciate you candor about some of the issues you experienced. I got a 2004 GT 5-speed. "barn find"...CHEAP (The ONLY way you can really afford to do a resto-mod). Has a pretty stock 4.6L V8; considering a crate Coyote swap. Is it straightforward (engine, EMS, etc.), or are there a lot of other considerations. All In I want to have a respectable drift/track car for about $10K. Nothing hugely aggressive, just something to have fun with. Do you have any suggestions?
Coyote Swap the better long term option. If I could do it all again I would have swapped. I was unaware of the cost a Gen 2 w/ 6R80 was when I built my 4.6.
Solid advise. On the fuel system upgrade .and just change the clutch and throw out any time you pull it apart .the aftermarket k member makes it easier but still a chore pulling the whole front end apart every time you want to do anything
Replacing the clutch and headers at the same time is super smart, but it feels like most of the market will ignore you because they skimp on their cars
I swapped the coils and had nothing but problems locally i keept the original motorcraft stock ones clean them up put some grease on them and all the problems were gone.
Idk what you are talking about with the coil packs and plugs. I running Accel with NGK iridium plugs and they have been running strong for over 1.5 years.
Thk u . Hey question: what is the quickest cheapest easiest first two things to increase horsepower in a v6 2004 mustang? Cold air intake, dual straight muffler??? Thk you
Who pulls apart the whole front end to replace the clutch when you can drop the tranny? I just replaced mine and it wasn't too bad if you know what your doing
You shouldn't have to remove headers. You have to remove the mid pipe to get the transmission out. But headers can stay bolted to the cylinder head. You can access the bellhousing bolts after removing the mid pipe. But you have to do that with stock exhaust as well. BBK headers fit well on my 04 mustang and didn't have to remove to replace clutch.
Anybody done a dyno test comparing a good set of shorty headers versus long tube headers. Betcha if you ain’t boosted there’s not going to be any difference worth the expense and trouble.
It's worth it going long tubes. All the guys making the most power weather na or boosted all have long tubes unless they're turbo obviously. It isn't just about peak power it's the overall curve. Long tubes actually help alot down low more than you'd think and obviously up top too it's because of the scavenging they do.
You do realize you can change the clutch by pulling the transmission and pulling the transmission is not hard at all because you have a manual transmission so everything in your gearbox is sealed therefore there shouldn’t be very many lines or wires to takeoff only bolts
I know you said always get the Ford motorcraft ignition coil I bought the cheapest Amazon ignition coils have them installed for years never have any problem cost around $30 complete set of 8

Pump gas at 650 hp at the crank. If you added innovator west 18% OD crank pulley with a boost limiter valve bleed it off at 17 psi. You'll have tons of low end torque = more fun.
You don’t have to pull the front end apart to do a clutch. I’ve done plenty of clutches without even loosening up one side of the header’s. So that is false sir

And my hood friends 03 term has a returnless and puts 700 some hp down. And plugs only what kind. Wtf I’ve had fords. Took me from 6am sat morning and 1145 that night engine was back in and 1230 I was back on the road.
