They had stopped giving him chances and fired him on sight. He was his own death. And he also created issues with the story itself, since they already had pre-written all his lines. And thus now, created issues with the whole cast, and more importantly how they're gonna work out a character who was there for the first two Season 3 episodes.
Actually while it is true Gibson kicked Virgil Williams, the writer isn't an angel either. According to the workers, the writer is belligerent and such altercation would have happened sooner or later. I think it was stupid to fire Gibson considering Hotch's importance in the show.

I love the fact he started out his speech with something that could be easily proven. He rolls into other things that could also be proven. Then, as the councilor continues to be an ass, he finishes off by humiliating him. He not only makes his point clearly, but he also gets some satisfaction because Hotch was, once upon a time, a prosecuting attorney. I love the man.
