    I have this watch and love it. The design is to allow unrestricted movemnt of the wrist for 1st responders and also protect the crown. I love the dial, find it interesting and easy to read. Rarely do I disagree with you Jodi, but I do here.

      The hands are too short considering the diameter of the dial. The 12 o'clock crown works only if it's quartz powered and your not resetting it often like an automatic. The face colors are great but it's too busy with that bezel imo.

    • @tancreddehauteville764
      @tancreddehauteville764 7 місяців тому +2

      Nah, you're wrong. The crown at 12 is just daft - they could have put it at 4 o'clock or 4.30 if they didn't want it at 3.

      I love mine; it’s peculiar, but in the best way. Super comfortable and legible, and very easy to wear. The GMT/UTC makes it great travel pal-like an eccentric but helpful friend.

    The auto version has a clean dial and is better as a true field watch. The watch wears very easily as it conforms to the wrist well. The bowl shape and top mount crown lets your wrist move without ever having the case get in your way. The strap is real rubber and has a nice stretch. The LUME is above average, the bezel is tight and has even a torque application to move. The bowl shape and flat case back keep it sitting level on the wrist. In pure German fashion, a field watch that is meant to actually work in the field. Function over form. I have traveled on quite a few adventures with this watch and have come to appreciate this function. The form has grown on me.

    I like this one quite a bit. The articulated lugs are interesting and practical, the GMT feature is nice to have (even if it isn't executed perfectly on this example) , and for me, the crown placement is lovely. I work in an environment that is a bit of a paradox. For my job, having a watch is essential and having the countdown bezel is helpful, but it's also a job where watches get scratched, smashed, battered, and abused. Having the crown in a somewhat protected position would be a very useful feature. Thanks for the review Jody, I just might have to pick one of these up!

  • @Theo-ul8qm

    This watch looks to me like it was designed as a 3-hander first, and then had the second time zone function added almost as an afterthought. I don't understand watches that have lume on the GMT/UTC hand, but not on the numerals. You might as well not lume the hand either, because it's useless without the numerals.
    Having said that, I really like this watch as a simple 3-hander. I think it's a fantastic sports watch. The articulated lugs enable you to wear it over a dive suit or over a base layer or other clothing, which I really like. The PVD makes the dial pop and therefore easier to read. And the watch being so large really makes sense when you wear it over clothing.
    I'm a big fan of the 12 o'clock crown from a functional perspective too. Many times when I'm out on a hike/climb or dive I find myself having a sleeve that ends at the watch case and a glove that ends at the other side of the watch case. Not having a crown at 3 works great with that, and you don't have to worry about crown guards digging into the wrist either. If you're mountain biking, for example, crown guards can be a nightmare.
    So I think this watch is a fantasic specialized sports watch, but I'd probably go for the automatic 3-hand configuration instead of this quartz. It's clearly not supposed to be worn in everyday life, it's complete overkill for that (unless you're maybe a firefighter or do some similar profession).
    P. S. I imgine this watch would be great to wear when skiing as well, in between layers of clothing. It'll be big enough to stick up and be readable at a glance. Great for many sports I think.

  • @emm_arr
    @emm_arr 7 місяців тому

    I like it. The bowl shape - much like a fitbit - helps it stay on top of a sleeve rather than vanishing from view.
    This seems to be what is often called a "squad watch" that finds favour with the police and fire and first aid services in Germany.

    Not a watch that'll be on my wish-list, but it's nice to see companies like Laco producing something a little (?) left of field. I am, however, a fan of the GMT (sorry...UTC) hand having its 'arm' colour matched to the face. It helps the arrow head to really stand out, whilst making the watch more legible. It'd be nice to see this type of detail on more GMTs.
    Informative and entertaining video as always, Jody. Cheers.

    The Atacama is apparently popular among military, police, fire brigades and search & rescue crews in Germany. It's not actually quirky, it's German-engineered for specific uses & environments... the shape of the case back to conform to bending your hand, the hidden crown to protect it and also not cut into your hand, the "winglets" to protect the crown and wear the watch over top of heavy work clothes, etc. We Germans don't do quirky, but we do actually have a sense of humor 😬

    I’ve been eyeballing these hard after getting served up several instagram ads for them. I know you mentioned you can change the strap but I’m curious if anyone has actually tried them on a different strap. Maybe an Erika’s style eleastic strap. I don’t think a nato would work. I don’t always love rubber and would be much more likely to get one if I can put an Erika’s or Watch Steward strap on it. After all, it’s still just a 22mm lug width opening.

    I actually don’t mind anything design wise, they could have maybe made the overall size less than 46mm, but the rest is fine enough. I’m assuming the utc markings on the dial is just to make the dial the only unique component for the utc so that the case and its elements are universal. I wouldn’t have it myself though, if it were 42/43mm I would.

    Always nice to see a count-DOWN bezel. Especially one that is not a Sinn or Damasko. (Nothing against those brands, just nice to see it from others). And a GMT with a timing bezel provides two different functions quite nicely, and a bit more neatly than a chronograph would.
    The winglets are quite strange; if your arm is quite big, the winglets just sit there and you just...wear the strap in a tighter hole than normal? And if your arm is small, they fall down around your arm but more rigidly than if you just had a soft strap. As for "protecting the crown," well, again, if your arm is big the crown doesn't stick out over it, and if your arm is small and the winglets fall downwards on each side the crown is exposed anyway like it would be if your strap started there. Does this just let you have a shorter strap by having some of the strap built-in to the watch?

I agree that the lume paint isn't the best and there could be more, but in the atacama desert there's probably a lot of moon light. The countdown ring actually makes more sense to me in terms of landlubber use. There's your accurate tracking for timing parking meters and showing up on time. The crown at 12 struck me as being perfectly sensible with it being inset into the lugs. Too expensive but I'd give it a B-plus for originality.

    Finally a watch for the large watch guys. However, I am just waiting for the comment asking for a 55mm version.

    The case vs. bezel seems a bit different. I would have to handle it to see what that actually means to me. The first thing I noticed about the aesthetics was the long lines of the minute markers lined up with long lines on the bezel. Then I noticed the numerals- my personal fetish regarding numerals is that they need to all be there or none of them should be there so this watch would not work for me. I don't mind numerals on field watches and fliegers but I also have a lot of dive watches without numerals so are numerals really needed? Are they an advantage or disadvantage?
