    It's crazy how the original is more animated that the new one. There's so many more dynamic movement in the original, compared to the new one where there are a lot of still or panning shots with only a character's mouth moving. It feels similar to how the Shaman King remake isn't much of an animation improvement from the original

      @zoyx22 that's a staple of 90's animation. The new version lacks soul and character. It's like a cheap knock off that looks better initially, but turns out to be far inferior after some scrutiny

      That's the trend of modern anime. Detailed still pictures, less subtle motions. They go all out in fight scenes for animation and visual effects though.

    Great analysis. The biggest difference between the 90s and 2023 adaptations can be boiled down to the 90s original actually taking advantage of strengths of being an animated adaptation with its use of color, composition, OSTs/sound effects, and rewriting minor plot threads to improve pacing (i.e. removing the old man betrayal is the right call in the anime because whereas it's quick to convey within a few panels/pages in print, it would take precious minutes of expository dialogue and animated scenes that are better used elsewhere). This growingly popular mindset that "closer to the manga = intrinsically better" needs to die.

    Just making me think about an encounter on a FMA03 reanimated post on r/anime where some guy was claiming that all old anime should be remade due to animation. Just completely disregarding directing and all this stuff. Seeing these actual remakes then just makes those types of remarks so much more infuriating.

    1996 anime is so much better, it actually has benevolence and purpose. Idc if the new one is more “faithful” panel by panel. The OG has soul, the new one is just content. Kenshin is like a emotionless boy here, not a passionate man. What they’ve done to the women also is abysmal. RIP Kaoru’s spirit, RIP Megumi’s foxiness. If making it more exact to the manga downgrades it this much, what’s the point. It is So boring.

    For all the filler the original had, it was very faithful to the manga in many ways. One of the biggest changes early on was removing the old guy who betrays Kaoru and that'sreally it. A lot of the little things you pointed out was present in the manga.
    Likewise, the remake is both more faithful to the manga plot wise but also less faithful in heart. Most of the goofy moments have been removed and Kaoru's more explosive personality has been all but removed to make her a more agreeable female protagonist which doesn't really do her character justice.
    Overall I think the remake is just trying to be more grounded and realistic for some reason. Something that I don't think it needs to be. The additional historical context they added is very appreciated, though.

    I love seeing different opinions on this show. Kenshin helped me through a lot as a teen (loved the manga to death), and I enjoyed the anime, so I was really excited about the remake. I'm enjoying it, but I do agree that it feels a bit like it's going through the motions (mind you, I've just started ep 3, so it could still surprise me) and might be lacking that "spark". I do like the coloring with the new one so far, and how clear the art is, but the characters keep feeling a little...off to me. It's been years since I've read the manga, though, so I could be totally wrong, but I feel like the characters in the manga were a bit sillier. I'd love to see a bit more comedy mixed with the darkness in the new adaptation. I REALLY want to see the fight with Saito, because that's my all-time favorite fight in the og anime. Anyway: good and bad with both, and I love them for different reasons, just like the live action version.

    Review seem to miss the point that there's a market for a version that's more faithful to the manga. The original anime made changes to make things warmer and yes those are going to be missing.
    The changes made to the original source material the first time through made sense to a certain point to launch a new series. (Marketing marketing marketing!) This project is quite intentionally different. Kaoru is a different personality in the manga (more passive) and Kenshin is not the over the top goofball. I get preferring the alterations the first anime made, but I'm happy to see the manga itself animated.

      Recency bias. There are lots of trash old anime. Imo the ratio between good and bad hasn't really changed throughout the years.
      If anything, considering the ratio is about the same, we have more good new anime per year than during the the 90s/00s because so much more anime is made per year today.

    • @etheri0n959
      @etheri0n959  Рік тому

      I don't think you know what recency bias is. And your logic of there's more good anime today because there's just so much more stuff being made today doesn't make any sense. Because there's so much more stuff being made today, it's much more likely that there'll be duds without the proper budget, that will have lots of scheduling issues, have recycled premises that we've seen time and time again without much originality, and are only being made on the off chance that it'll be profitable. A mentality of just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks isn't really that great for making quality stuff. There are definitely bangers that have come out recently, but counting all of the shit isekai and lazy adaptations that have come out, I don't think you can really say anime is overall better in terms of quality now than it was during the 90s or early 2000s. Also none of this really has anything to do with the new rurouni kenshin's quality since trends, or what we think the trends are, aren't related to that at all.

    • @capebarat4961
      @capebarat4961 Рік тому +1

      @@etheri0n959 Your are right, I realized that recency bias, applies to me rather than the person I reply to lol. (Projection much?) I flubbed my wording. Rather than recency bias, I should've said "survivorship bias"
      Do you think those issues you mentioned don't apply to old anime? From time immemorial scheduling and budgeting issues has always been around. There are tons of shit anime made in the past, we just don't talk about them anymore. That's why old anime seems "better", because we only remember the good ones.
      Most Anime an advertisement vehicle for existing manga (and light novels / toys) after all, so the sponsors will always worry about ROI. It's extremely rare that we get a show where the sponsor says "do whatever you need to make it good"
      FWIW, I have been watching anime since the original Kenshin was released. Even in the OG kenshin days, customers have to pick and choose what to watch, and that hasn't really changed.
      Also, this is only my anecdotal opinion: These past couple years we have had so many good anime released, and I honestly don't remember any year before 2020-2023 where we have anywhere close to the QUANTITY of good shows released. Granted every season we also get a fair share of shit anime!
      my 2c only ofc :)

    • @etheri0n959
      @etheri0n959  Рік тому

      I didn't say that for sure wasn't the case for old anime, I just wanted to show you that you're logic of, "there's so much more anime being made now, therefore, it's more likely that there will be good anime, was deeply flawed as it can just as easily be used to support the opposite opinion. Unless we actually sit down and get the exact statistics on the ratio of good to bad in both old anime and modern anime, there's no way we can really say which is worse or better overall.
      And even if we did that, that would heavily rely on people's opinions on what anime even qualify as good or bad. And then we'd have to have a discussion about what anime even count as modern or old. There's just so much room for error on the matter that there's no real way to actually determine which era of anime was better.
      Also, just because those issues I mentioned existed back in the day as well doesn't mean it was just as bad. Part of the point of my comment was to say how the increase in anime now has worsened this problem significantly.

    • @capebarat4961
      @capebarat4961 Рік тому

      Yes you're right. It's just my opinion. I've watched a lot of anime over the years.
      From my observation only, it feels like the ratio of good to bad is roughly the same throughout the years. My definition of good or bad is just the consensus between my friend group and the internet of course and as you said that's by no means accurate!
      There are a lot of amazing anime created in these past few years, it seems like we have no shortage of good shows to be watched. During the OG Kenshin era I feel like we get maybe one good show every season. OG Kenshin also nosedived quite hard post-Sishio arc.

      @@etheri0n959right here the timestamp you note shows how little you understand about adaptation and that realistically no one should listen to a word from you.
      "An adaptation should be good on its own merits" is true at a sub atomic level but there are hundreds of levels of adaptations. Coeurls, Displacer Beasts, and Xenomorphs all share that they were based on an alien from the short story Black Destroyer. The first two are near 1:1 copies while a Xenomorph is certainly not a cat like monster with tentacles for whiskers.
      There is really not a definite answer to a good adaptation because it's up to interpretation especially when adapting literature to film. Anime based on manga has a slight advantage here because it's literature normally has clear depictions of the original authors vision. An unfaithful recreation like the OG series isn't bad because it added in about 30 episodes worth of filler, and the new isn't bad because it didn't tick all of your hyper specific boxes of your own interpretation of the story.
      If you can't even figure that out then please just stop, whining entitled content and pretentious comments like this one have no place in a reviewers space. You're allowed to not like a thing, but don't act like some definitive end all be all who can respond to actual criticism with a timestamp... Especially when that timestamp is full of spite and vitriol.

    First and foremost, from a contextual point, why would Kaoru just welcome a guy she just met, Kenshin is just there to stop by , learned about Kaoru and her dojo, and what the dojo stands for, that said, Kenshin believes her father would want costing her life just for reputation of the dojo, which is why he can't just feel at home, while someone's out there trying to use the name Battousai and disdaining Kamiya dojo, so he went out there to stop Gohei, and that oldman Kihei, is more important than just for plot twist, because Kaoru knew Kihei even before Kenshin, but then Kihei betrayed her, and he is the one connected to Gohei's group, after Kenshin went to their hideout and investigate , which is why he went back to Kamiya Dojo to help Kaoru after learning the connection, unlike the 90s anime, he came back to the dojo, because they need to happen. the context and story of the remake made more sense than the "relationship build up" of the 90s version. Kenshin WASN'T EXACTLY in town to settle down, he's a wanderer but then heard someone using the name battousai

    • @etheri0n959
      @etheri0n959  Рік тому +10

      First and foremost, everyone seems to be forgetting that kaoru did in fact offer kenshin to stay with her after just meeting him. After saving him from the police she literally asks him if he wants to stay at her dojo. So yes, even though they just met, she offered him a stay at her dojo. Secondly, even if that wasn't the case, the whole point of this episode is making the relationship of kaoru and kenshin feel natural and organic which the new version clearly doesn't even in the eyes of people who like this remake given how often people use this argument. Also there IS a reason for kaoru to welcome kenshin, you know, because, he kinda saved her life? It's not enough for her to want him to stay forever, but as a way of repaying him, it works. And yes, it does make sense for kenshin to stay in town during the first episode if the original. Even ignoring the fact that both versions of kenshin say they're tired of wandering as soon as they close the door, in the 90s, kenshin knows that someone is using his name to kill people from the beginning. So his reason for staying in town is the same as his reason in the remake. And him choosing to stay at kaoru's dojo for the time being was also because the killer was heavily related to kaoru's dojo. But even if this all wasn't the case, I have to stress the importance of the fact that kaoru and kenshin's relationship is supposed to be the central hook of the first episode and choosing not to focus on that is terrible from a narrative perspective, which is why the remake fails for me.

In this new one, they skip ENTIRE fights, encounters and even characters from the original. Where are the two little girls Ayame and Suzume that call Kenshin "Uncle kenny"? Where's Doctor Gensai? These characters were introduced within the first 20 episodes of the original, but they are nowhere to be found in this new one. 1:20 I loved how the original handled this scene, we already knew (sort of) that Kenshin was the legendary Battosai cus it was kinda obvious from the intro monologue, but by showing how Kenshin acts like a fool on the outside but lives like a badass is such an awesome subtlety that really fleshed out his character that the 2023 remake really missed out on
    Edit: Also the back story on Gohei (massive jobber bad guy) felt much more connected in the 1996 anime than the remake, the fact that he was a former student was such a good motive that pushed him to attack the dojo. Since the remake missed out on it and went with how the manga did (not saying the manga is bad), it felt like there wasn't really an incentive for Kihei to take over the dojo, if they added in Gohei's back story it would've connected plot points up so much better.

    A lot of points you talking only makes sense in the 90’s, some of them, it is it’s own thing, the doctor in the 90’s is totally different character from the 2023 show, you didn’t consistently try to be objective, but you’re bias on 90’s, just like that doctor/oldman, if they stayed the same as the 90’s it contradicts how the story was envisioned by the creator, just for your simplicity on Gohei’s motive, Kenshin wasn’t meant to stay there in the first part, she barely knows him why would she be attached already to Kenshin?, she only lets him stay after being saved twice, after not letting her Dojo get taken over, in the 90’s version what’s with Kaoru punching Kenshin, the guy who just saved her, that’s how she say thanks, she was helpless and needed saving, and then she can do that? Not a good way to establish relationship.

      The point of this video was to compare the two show's first episodes. What happens after and the way the changes in characters affects future plotlines is important, but it does nothing to affect the quality of these two first episodes. And yeah, there is no reason for kaoru in the new version to care about kenshin, that's why the show should work to make her wanting kenshin to stay feel natural like the original adaptation did. Also as a side note, kaoru did offer kenshin to stay after the first time she was saved by him. And you're misrepresenting the scene where kaoru punches kenshin greatly. She did that on accident as a joke in response to him talking about their bathroom incident. She didn't intend on punching him, kenshin just didn't dodge like he was able to during the fight he just got into. It's a genuinely cute joke and moment of levity after the big reveal of kenshin staying. It's better than the crappy joke at the end of the new one's first episode where kaoru just asks about kenshin's age with this really awkward comedic timing right before the credits roll. You seem pretty biased yourself, only determining if something is good based on the most surface level of analysis as well as if it's following the outline of the manga to a T.

I thought Kenshin's face was just as charming as the original. Sure, it wasn't animated like the original, but it was still just as funny. Then you said that the rest of that scene was soulless, even after Kaoru attacked him. When Kenshin hits head on the wall, after she hits him, he has an expressive face. Isn't that what you wanted? Lol You also said Kaoru didn't seem sad about Kenchi leaving, but you can clearly tell by the look on her face that she was. They exercising the concept of show don't tell, which you lamenting that the first episode lacked. You're entitled to your opinion, but I don't think the first episode was that bad. @etheri0n959  Рік тому +4

      Thank you for engaging in discussion with me. First to comment on your point about when kenshin hits the wall and makes that expression. That's literally the only time in that scene where he does anything noteworthy at all in terms of the energetic and personality filled/charming quality I was talking about. That seems like a pretty cherrypicked example. I don't even think he made that face ever again in the entire episode. So, the point about the original being more animated, energetic, and lifelike than the new one still stands. And the look on kaoru's face is not that clear to me. It might be a problem with modern anime in general just having a poor time clearly conveying emotions through a simple expression or it may be because she isn't even the focus of the shot, meaning she's a bit too far to get a close look at how she's emoting visually, but it doesn't convey the sense of sadness that well and definitely not in a way as impactful as the first episode's way of handling that same emotion. Let's say though that for the sake of argument I gave you that point and said yeah, that's an example of show don't tell storytelling. That's also the only real time the new show does that at all. The point of my claim that the new show generally prefers telling over showing isn't that there is none of the type of storytelling that's actually good. The point is that overall, it goes the route of expositing information through dialogue.

      @@etheri0n959isode 2 Rearranges events in the manga to make the following arc mesh better together as to not make the aarly mini/episodic arc feel disjointed and at least make the flow a bit better?
      It has its own merits and "not just riding off the source material". Imo, it's also not a good idea to just compare the new one to the "first adaptation and it is more objective to reflect it upon the source material too.
      I too like the First OG episode 1 better but that removed the "Olderbrother" for the fake Battosau that foreshadowed a land buy off scheme/scam that will become relevant to the earliest major arc. It might be twist people may not like for the villain but the land scheme thing is more of a world building aspect showing an issue that is predominant to the "meiji era" at that time. Since Ruruoni also do integrate a lot of the historical elements to it.
      Even the Live action knows that and mesh this early plot point and directly relates it to the big arc for this part of the story rather than cutting out the "land scam" stuff.
      Over all it is facing the HXH 2011 and FMA brotherhood situation.
      Those reboots in general makes the arcs that The OG adaptations did feel like more of a digest version of it. (The OG expanded on those arc more detailed and took time adapting it which is mostly a by product of how anime adaptations are usually "adapted" back then.)
      And in vice versa the reboot versions also faced the repercussions of having the source material already finished so the contracted number if episodes to put in the entire story is mostly set in stone and mostly these reboots shine on areas the original adaptation were not able to adapt, and removes the chunk of the many episodes of fillers (in OG ruruoni, that would be the entire season 2).
      To give an example although the internet like to clown about OG FMA, the manga canon stories in the OG,(which are the first half of the OG FMA) are better than the Brotherhood version of them. And fans mostly like "Brotherhood" for adapting the story after the 1st half of og FMA.
      The OG will probably absolutely do the the aearly arcs better and the OVA storyline obviously.
      and my hopes for the Remake is pace the "OG 3rd season" better and just adapt the Jinchuu arc. And maybe the ongoing Hokkaido arc. In HXH fashion

    I feel they're going for a much different tone with these two adaptations; the original one was more willing to lean into comedy to balance out the darker subject matter, more friendly towards younger audiences. I feel this adaptation is getting rid of over the top reactions, being more muted in order for it to be more mature, more serious and maybe even darker (like the OVAs). One thing you didn't mention was when Kenshin was getting arrested and the old guy paid the cops off, Kenshin was clearly disappointed that happened, that the justice he fought for was corrupted. The old guy talking about his motivations being driven by money and how money runs the Meji era, that sort of thing I believe will be tackled more. It's clearly going for something different, so idk if a 1:1 comparison will do in this case. It's not like FMA & FMAB where the original was animated while the manga was going so it had to create its own story while the latter could focus more on the source material, so they were similar in tone.

    • @etheri0n959

      I don't really think that matters when talking about comparing these two shows. I'm comparing these two shows on how they handle the same material, which is the story they adapt for the first episode. And in my opinion, the original adapts that story better by focusing more on kaoru and kenshin's relationship. While I love the infectious energy of the original, that's not the most important part to me. What it boils down to is that the new show does not tell a story too well in its first episode. That's why i ultimately don't like it that much. And if we're talking about fma 2003 and brotherhood, those two shows have very different tones and stories as well past the point the original adaptation strays from the manga. The rurouni kenshin situation is pretty similar to the two fma adaptations, so much in fact that some commenters have already compared this to the fma adaptations already.

      @@etheri0n959 well if you focus on two different aspects the story telling will be different. Also I’m not saying you’re wrong here, a lot of your assessment is correct. I just think this version is meant to be more grounded and serious.
      However I do think that is the way to do it when doing a remake, if you do a remake what’s the point of you do it exactly the same? Once again, I am not saying your assessment is wrong, I agree with a lot of the points you made, I just think they’re trying something is all and yeah, maybe the story telling falls short early, but the differences in comparing the two is kinda what keeps me coming back to it

      @@reeseseater12 yeah, I didn't mean to sound aggressive, I just wanted to respond to your comment. But sorry if I came off that way. I don't seem to know how aggressive some of my responses sound in text. But yeah, I don't think it's bad to try something different, I just don't think the remake does that very well either. Like, I don't really see it as a more mature tale on the story, it's just more bland to me, but that might just be me, I don't know. Sorry again if I came off as aggressive. I'll try to stop doing that.

    It's pretty much the same situation where people compares the 90's adaption of Hunter x Hunter and the 2011 version. For me, the two adaptation did a good job adapting the manga. All I could say is I'm good with it as it's not gonna be like Shaman King 2021.

    I get a few of your points, but honestly, I think the less goofy tone works better. Kenshin is a war vet with PTSD who is trying to overcome his trauma via devoting himself to a more peaceful way of life.
    Nobuhiro Watsuki always wanted the story to be more adult, but the producers decided to shounen-ize it to broaden the appeal.
    If you watch the OVA Tsuiokuhen, there isn't a single joke in the whole series. There are barely even any happy moments at all. Kenshin's story is romantic and tragic, not primarily comedic.

    I just feel reboot is cool in graphics but... Freaking boring at the rest. Literally few background soundtracks, lack of humour (or lazy tries to express it). Even HD fights won't make it better, there is no atmosphere we could feel in the OG.

    I'm enjoying the remake, and while I personally didn't find the remake to be lacking charm, I do agree the animation is leagues better in the 90's show. So much more effort was put into every shot, and I blame that on modern practices, budgets and time constraints. It could also be because of the studio they gave this show to. The same guys who made Goblin Slayer, which I like, but also shares a lot of the same issues of looking cheap and streamlined, with no real personality behind their art style. It's the most modern looking show possible, and not in the good way. I still really like the remake, outside a few pacing issues, the animation as you said in your video, and with me not personally not being a fan of the wacky stuff, like the guy who can make you suffocate by pulling the Kazuma Kiryu death stare.

      I think the new voice while i like the voice actor for doppio. I feel kenshins og voice fits better cause kenshin is suppose to appear more femine, soft and someone who can put u at ease. Its what contrasts his past where he is killing machine. The og voice knows how to shift her voice for slice of life parts, for comedic parts and knows how to drop the bass in her voice for when shit hits the fan

    Are we talking about the original dubbed '96 or the newer dubbed. Watched the original ones my friend sent from Japan and were later that year released in US on DVD. Wanted to watch with my son and found it on Disney plus and voices are different. Some of the words they use are different, like Battousai The Manslayer is now The Slasher. Kaoru is now Kori. Reverse blade sword is Reverse edge. AND that's only a little of episode one. I can't watch it. Too much of the change irks me. Need to get a dvd player so I can show him the true original.

    Hearing just the opening song made me dilike the remake instantly lol.
    But I gave it a chance and watched through the first episode. It was just a decent retelling of the original story, with more detailed fights which is fine. I watched the original first episode right after and I found it to be better.
    Watching episode 2, I went in not expecting much. Yeah the rock music was still jarring, but cool and different I guess. But after watching to the end, I now wish to continue watching the rest of the series.
    One thing I really liked about the remake is that in episode 2, it took a few moments to explain the major clans of the Ishin Shishi faction and how the Satsuma became in charge of the police in the Meiji Era, while the Choshu were in charge of the military. I know that not a lot of people would appreciate that exposition, and it might have ruined a bit of the pacing, but as a history fan, I really enjoy those, and I hope they would continue with more historical info. The history is actually what made RK my favorite anime even though I consider many other anime to be better.
