Now that I’ve looked up the controversy... Jesus. I believe there is a natueal morality imbedded in us, no matter what one is exposed to, or how they convince themselves otherwise, conserving their bad or evil deeds. We have free will, and these people choose to follow their urges, instead of choosing to get help, therefore, completely responsible for his actions.
The reason why they're priorizing Brazil and Latam is because Rurouni Kenshin, along with Dragon Ball, is huge in Latinamerica. It's the same reason why KoF runs so many tournaments in México, even though the series has died out pretty much everywhere else, they can count on us being there for it.
Yeah, Samurái X/Rurouni Kenshin was really popular in LatAm when they used to air it on Cartoon Network in the early 2000s. Though I have some issues with the new anime's Neutral Spanish dub, Crunchyroll sent the anime to a smaller studio in Cuernavaca, Mexico and while the voice acting is decent, most of the voice actors are don't have that much experience and some characters like Kenshin himself sound kind of weird To be fair, Samurai X never had a consistent dub, the first anime was dubbed in Colombia, the anime movie was dubbed in Mexico City and all the live-action movies were dubbed in Argentina. Nobody was hoping that Kenshin's original VA, Alexander Paéz, would reprise his role, though some were hoping that Óscar Flores (who voiced him in the movie) or Alejandro Graue (who voice the live-action version) could return, but alas Crunchyroll decided to dub the show in a small studio, which is weird because other less popular anime distributed by CR sometimes are recorded in bigger studio with more experienced VAs
@@SilverYPheonix well, Saint Seiya also has plenty of fans in Italy, France, Spain and China. In fact, there's an official Saint Seiya comic book that is being drawn by a French artist and the, admittedly awful, Saint Seiya live-action movie was financed in part by a Chinese film studio
@@pablocasas5906 South american countries have tons of fan projects as well, but they are limited since they don't have direct support from who owns the rights. And about China is actually quite the problem since Tencent has the rights of the story and uses it for a freaking mobile game which is fully funded by whales throughout SA, EU and China. They do nothing with the money except fill their pockets 😮💨
100% agree mate. The old Kenshin OST was the best in whole anime history, IMHO. It just fits so well the whole medieval japan thing. New OST was kinda garbage, in my opinion, and it just makes the whole experience worser than the original anime.
True. 90s Rurouni Kenshin had that romanticism about the Meiji era in their music that I don't think the new adaption will ever get. Even a fighting game, The Last Blade, got the Rurouni Kenshin vibe from the 90s just fine
That whistle that played every time Kenshin appeared is like a staple of my childhood. I will never forget it. It always felt like the hero was finally here to save the day when things got bad.
This series was really popular here in Latin America. They changed the name to Samurai X and they showed all the episodes dubbed. A lot of the people from my generation have fond memories of the opening. I guess i will give a chance to this new adaptation.
I remember watching some episodes of the 90s Rurouni Kenshin, or Samurai X as it was called, on Cartoon Network back in the early 2000s when I was in elementary school I recently watched some episodes from that dub and I have to admit that it sounds weird, but that's maybe because it was dubbed in Colombia and they didn't have a lot of experience dubbing anime, but some voices, like Kaoru's actually sounded kind of nice The animated movie movie was dubbed in Mexico City and the live-action ones were dubbed in Argentina, but the new anime is being dubbed in Cuernavaca, Mexico with actors that aren't as well know as those from Mexico City, but they're doing a good job, though the dub is trying to be more faithful and honestly I kind of missed those mistranslations like calling Kenshin "vagabundo" instead of "rurouni" or referring to him as "Battosái el destajador" in the new dub they just call him "Hitokiri battósai", they dub also refers to Kaoru's dojo as "Kamiya kasshin-ryū" in the Colombian dub they translated it as "escuela/dojo de ken-do estilo Kamiya". Sometimes I just feel that leaving lot of terms untranslated feels kind of unnatural
Yeah I feel like the dude is really off base with his take at the end here. Not including the fact that he disregards latin American countries, he pushes the importance of western localization too hard.
@@pablocasas5906 I grew up with that dub 'cause it's from my country jajaja. I'm aware that there were moments in which the quality was bad to say the least but they tried to localize the majority of words of relevance to our language and make sense at the same time. I haven't try the new dub but I had a good impression from the first episodes.
@@imjustbettr The anime scene in Latin America is strong. My parents grew up watching Mazinger z, Candy Candy, Gundam among other shows fully dub. Even they had the chance to watch super Sentai shows from the 80s. I know the US is a huge market for anime but Latinamerica is also important. Let's not forget Brazil. Piracy was a huge problem buy more and more people are subscribing to Crunchyroll to watch all shows legally.
I got one petpeeve with the remake, and its the lack battousai eyes. The empty amber eyes and the menacing glare are so iconic with Kenshi's psychological shift that without them, the tense scenes that bring such a monster feel empty.
Same. I especially saw that with the kenshin vs Saito fight. The original had a great build up, and when you saw his eyes, you knew the battousia finally appeared, which led to the best fight in the series in my book. The remake just felt empty
@@abstractfactory8068it's not like he's changing his eyes literally.. It's like changing his psyche like changing from Kenshin to the Battousai.. Those eyes were so impactful to those scenes that it happened..
@@nadstengco2591 Well in the old anime they took some liberties and added all kind of fantasy stuff, the eyes changing colors looked ridiculous as if he was possessed like in the exorcist movie but anime version.
@@abstractfactory8068that's exactly what it is.. It's like him being possesed by something he was trying to get away from.. It's more dramatic and impactful to the scene because it shows he really does have a dark side/killer side.. Don't start talking about ridiculousness because we are talking about anime here.. Everything is ridiculous when it comes to anime..
I watched the anime in the mid 90s and read the manga in high school a few years later, collecting every volume as they came out. Love this series to death, since kenshin helped me through some rough times.
for sure man. i caught it on toonami after school around 4 or so. and yeah helped me through some rough times as well. his calming voice, the comedy in it, the serious fights. man what a series.
Same man, I used to emulate his way of thinking and listen to the many beautiful background music that just fits with numerous situations or moments in life. There was so much feel to it. Sadly I don't feel the same draw of this remake and it's not just nostalgia. I really wanted to get hooked in and genuinely looked for things I liked but it just feels too much like most modern day anime. Also preferred Kenshin's original feminine like voice and appearance as it gave him so much identity. In the remake he sounds like that typical japanese high school dude with special abilities/powers lol
Yeah, the video sort of confused me because while I get that it's largely a redo, the first anime didn't do the final arc at all, so it kind of is justified to remake it. Yes you could do 'just' the final arc, but that would be a little weird given how old the original is, so I think just remaking the whole thing, presumably this time including the final arc, is the most logical way to go about it.
@@erenyeagerist7681 animation techniques a lot of the new stuff is digitally drawn and for some reason all these new artists are afraid to use rich or even bland dark colors and prefer to use bright poping colors might also be the limitations with the software unable to capture the nuances of the outline that was done by hand
I watched the old anime an the remake episodes back to back. I'm still impressed how they made the old one more engaging despite the lack of digital technology
This remake does still like Kenshin for me but I do really miss the music and 90's animation at times which might sound weird but thats how I feel but still it's really good for what it is so far.
@@altname4742 I think it's because everything is now digital instead of cell, and also having a general lower budget so everything looks flat which irks me, in terms of animation.
Yeah, that's the word "flat"! Also the soundtrack is flat and uninspired. The show looks good but flat. The scenes are in boring angles... The low budget might be the cause for some of those things for sure.
And the ost! I mean "warriors suite", "departure" are some of my favourite ever. It's hard for the show to feel like kenshin without the ost. At least for me. That said I'm enjoying it so far
Somebody is suffering from nostalgia syndrome. Don't get me wrong I love the og adaptation, but the real reason why the new adaptation is tanking is because people already saw the first one and unless the new one gets adapted in bulk like FMAB, it's gonna get caught up in the middle of the boring feel good arcs.
I’m not convinced anime needs western viewership to succeed. Multiple Japanese companies have come out and said they prioritize their own people and country when it comes to anime and manga. Even Dragon Ball it wasn’t until recently where some members of these companies started to realize how big Dragon Ball was internationally.
It doesn’t need it to succeed in Japan. But to make money in the larger market, English language viewership is important just bc of the sheer population difference. The companies discussing not catering to western audiences also know that a lot of them will watch anyway
Dragon Ball is a bad example. Companies have been perfectly aware of DBZs international success since the early 90s, when it became a huge success in continental Europe and Latin America. And the few companies that weren't aware of it, definitely became aware in the early 2000s, when it finally picked up in the US. That's over 20-30 years ago at this point.
@@ViridianCrisis7 not really. France is the biggest purchaser of manga outside of Japan. And we all know Japan cares about manga sales over anime. That said, the fact that Kenshin doesn’t even have a French dub is kind of concerning.
@@The_Worst_Guy_Ever Manga sales yes because it’s still a small early stage industry in the English-speaking world. But anime itself is a different matter. French versions just aren’t as marketable as English dubs are by sheer virtue of the number of viewers.
The 90s honestly has a smoother animation than the 2023 and the proportions of the drawing of the characters in the 2023 is awful, it's like the animators didn't know how to draw properly.
The Samurai X OVAS have forever been my favorite anime OVAs. I've been stoked about the remake since it was announced and I truly hope it continues on and will get the hype that it so deserves. I understand the reason for the controversy, but you can love the show and not give a rats behind about the creator.
You know why there's such an emphasis on a Spanish dub, right? We got Kenshin (completely uncensored, by the way) in the late 90's in Latin America. I remeber how it droped like a ton of bricks on every kid's head in Chile in 1998. At that time we had had Dragon Ball, Ranma and other for quite a while already, but this was SO, well... japanese in it's aesthetics, content, etc. So, yeah... let's say that this series has more than just a little cult following over here.
Anime in Latin America usually arrived uncensored and some shows that never caught on in the States, like Saint Seiya, Slam Dunk or Sakura Cardcaptor, became popular series here Samurai X was of weird in that its LatAm dub was made in Colombia instead of Mexico like most of the popular anime from that time, and while the acting wasn't as good as those series dubbed in Mexico, or Venezuela and Chile for that matter, it still has its charm. It's kind of a shame that for the new anime the Spanish dub is being made by completely new actors in a relatively small studio, I was hoping they could at least bring some of the original dub VAs from Colombia, or the ones from Mexico who worked in the anime movie or the Argentinean cast that dubbed the live-action films
@@pablocasas5906 It was always so funny that the most japanese (culturally speaking) anime at the time had such a (relatively) heavy Colombian accent. You also made me remember how bad early Chilean dubs were... Sometimes series like "You are under arrest!" sounded like people were speaking to a wall for how emotionless they spoke. And I think that was probably due to lack of experience and bad directing, since many of the voices were done by actual actors... but of course, normal actors don't guarantee good voice acting unless they have good direction or experience. It's a good thing that the Chilean dub industry improved miles from then.
@@KaosNoKamisama I think the first Chilean dub I heard as a child was Garfield and Friends, and I knew it was made in Chile because it was mentioned in the credits. But speaking about Chilean dubs in general, I really like the ones for anime like Sorcerous Stabber Orphen, Marmalade Boy, Sonic X, Zoids and recently Edens Zero (though in the second season the EZ is now being directed in Mexico, though almost all of the Chilean cast was left intact) If we're talking about cartoons, Avatar the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, Jake Long and Chalk Zone were great as well
@@pablocasas5906 I believe the dub for Little Witch Accademia was also done in Chile. I remembder my brother used to know a girl who did some work for that show back when he was studiyng in Santiago.
@@KaosNoKamisamayeah, LWA was in fact the first Studio Trigger anime to receive a Neutral Spanish dub, though later works like Brand New Animal, Promare and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners were dubbed in Mexico. Still, Marlene Pérez work as Akko was well liked by all of Latin America, especially the scream she let out in one episode, "¡Maestra Piscis!", has become a meme among Latin American anime fans
I got to meet one of the persons behind the new anime, and I can tell you, he's a huge fan of the original manga and that he loved the original Kenshin adaptation. The team of this new version has a lot of respect to the 90s one. I take this new anime as a new way to tell the story. Some people has taken this too seriously... by hating it, etc. Emoto was totally thrilled to work in this anime adaptation. He told me that people in this anime's studio hold a lot of respect to the characters and the story of Rurouni Kenshin (some are hired talent who happen to also be fans of the franchise). What I loved from the 90s adaptation is the soundtrack (it is a total masterpiece). I would have reused it for this new version. Nothing beats "Kenshin's Theme" or "Warrior's Suite". Also, I love some takes and the framing (it was more dinamic) and the use of backgrounds was top notch. But the new one is incredible, too. The worries of the studio were about how old fans would recieve the new anime (I guess, something we may not like could be the new soundtrack or the aesthetics), but he told me that the studio holds a lot of respect for the 90s adaptation and just wanted to retell the story the most faithful to the manga they could get (they are nailing it so far). I saw this person drawing live, and his skills are incredible (he's really humble, and I was amazed, because western people holding this kind of experience behind them, tend to be quite cocky). He drew Kenshin, Shishio, Sanosuke, Kaoru, Saito, all in a row in just a few minutes and for the fans of the series in an event he attended in Granada (Spain)... and they looked like the manga (especially the "remake" version, as you note in this video). We even talked together and believe me, the studio knew the story and plot of the original manga (and the characters) quite well. I hope this anime does not fail, and that we finally get to see the entire manga being adapted. Kenshin deserves it, and the people behind this new adaptation also deserve it. Producing anime is quite costy nowadays. And this one is 2D, not more 3D shit anime that we are fed up with. I was reluctant at first, as I didn't like the music of the new adaptation and some things looked a bit "stiffy" in some shots, but once my team told me I was about to interview this person, I watched the anime, and I was impressed because of the amount of love they punt into it. The animation is top notch, the drawings are actually amazing (just see those close-ups of Kenshin or Jin'e Udo... way better drawn than the 90s version). This person worked in things like the original Ghost in the Shell movie from 1995, so you can believe me... this studio has some great talent working there. The problem, is that many people grew up with the old one, so they will always choose that version. It holds a place in many people's hearts (including myself). Thanks the maker, I do not have a problem with that. I loved the original Kenshin anime, I own it (DVD) and I am also enjoying this new version like hell.
I have not watched the new series now just the trailer...but man the direction of the original was something else, the art, the background the framing everything has so much character when it's not being goofy, but still packs a punch
I need people to stop hating on the new opening. While not as iconic as the first two Kenshin openings.... It is such a banger and might be my favorite opening of this season of anime. With that said I think the one problem I have with this remake is the OST. The music is so good in the original anime and really enhances what is going on... I wish they would have done remixes or references to the original OST.
yeah, people act like its hot garbage. Some use lame excuses like it's not "feudal japan" enough, and all I could say to them "HELLO, REMEMBER THE HARD ROCK GUITAR RIFF AT THE START OF SOBAKASU?" Sobakasu was Jrock through and through.
Most of the complaints came from "anime only" who only watched the 1994 anime, they never bothered to start reading the manga, when this remake is adapating the manga more faithfully. The 1994 anime, was a mix of canon and filler in the whole run. Most of the canon episodes was by Gallop, and the fillers by Studio DEEN. 40 episodes from the 95 are fillers. The OG anime isn't bad, but people tend to forget how bad the fillers are.
@@GenJuhru I mean to be fair the Hunter x Hunter 1999 is hard to find if you watch it illegally the Rurouni kenshin manga and anime are more accessible in the way which is why you see a lot of comments in this video
@@GenJuhru HxH as a "true remake" has some "asterisks" because it was more akin to how FMAB did it, which was condense the earlier parts. The amount of people that complained when they didn't See Kaito in the first episode lmao. Havn't seen the original completely in years but I have fond memories of it. So far I like what their doing with the remake with things looking brighter and more colorful considering how muted and dark the colors were in the og. I. hope it continues and we get the entire series though everything the creator of Kenshin has done will only come up if you go looking for it at least for the casual anime fan imo.
Wdym muted? Can't you even tell how color works? The remake is the muted one. It's too bright. The colors on the characters are overshadowed by light. The colors and lighting in the original fits the setting and story they represent
14:21 the last option is Hindi हिंदी most spoken language in India. Crunchyroll has been Hindi dubbing many a latest anime since summer 2022 to sell fairly priced subscriptions here.
As far as the western release of the anime, I spent the entire Summer of 2000 with my grandparents in the Caribbean and “Samurai X” had already finished airing the entire series (including the Japanese Jesus arc) of the same English dub on… get ready… Cartoon Network. I don’t exactly know why the local CN got to air the whole thing before the US, but censorship was definitely less of a thing there because everything was uncut.
I used to stay with my great aunt in the Caribbean during the summers growing up and that’s how I started watching Kenshin and so many other anime that weren’t available in the states yet.
The English audiences greatly underestimate how many fans there are in the Spanish speaking countries. Latin American news channels still play the Spanish edition of the theme song from Saint Seiya from time to time -- and it's still on Spotify as a popular hit! And the news anchors sing along! The West grew up with our cartoons. From my limited experience/research and listening to people's experiences, the Spanish speaking world got anime more than the Western cartoons. I certainly watched mostly anime in my time in Costa Rica and they did not rush their dubbing either.
I am deeply frightened that translation will be Politically corrected... People will be forced to get the fansub, rather than the official especially Crunchyroll is having those issues as of lately.
The Op for the Kenshin remake is a bop though. It honestly reflects kenshin's struggles and the tone of the series more than the really happy original OP, as good as that is.
I think it sucks and doesn't fit at all with the series or the characters. It's just generic jpop crap. The original opening wasn't good ill be honest......but I think I'll take even that over this meaningless drivel. Don't know what YOU saw in it but I got nothing and believe me as a fan......I've tried.
I’m a huge fan of the original. I tried episode 1 and got about 13 minutes in. I just couldn’t continue. It didnt feel like kenshin. The music, the voices. None of it. I’d rather just re watch the original 100 times over than watch a single second of this remake.
I like the reboot, personally. I think it's easier to separate the art from the artist for me since I didn't really know of them growing up (unlike Mindless Self Indulgence, which I listened to and went out of my way to learn about the members). Also Dorohedoro is absolutely my favorite manga of all time and I desperately hope they get a season 2, especially with Mappa having done so well for themselves since
As much as what he did is absolutely horrific, and he deserves to be in prison for that, I just can't get on board with the idea that the good work he did do needs to be destroyed because of that. How many people in the past were terrible in one way or another? And I don't mean just that they weren't nice, I mean.. genuinely terrible. It was pretty common. We need to get over the idea that there must be nothing redeeming about vile people. Take the good and deal with the bad. Don't let the good override the need for punishment, but do let the good live on its own. To not do this is contemptible.
Don't get me wrong, I love the OG Rurouni Kenshin, and I am happy about this reboot (so far). I'm glad to see most animes are getting a second chance and adapting their source material more faithfully like Fullmetal Alchemist. If they keep things right with the manga and HOPEFULLY eventually getting an English dub announcement, the Rurouni Kenshin reboot might succeed!
You severely underestimate Brazilian and Latin American anime audiences. We have a big relationship with classic animes like Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin, the Dragon Ball series, Saint Seiya, Pokemon, Yugi-Oh, just to name a few. All of these started airing in LatAm years before they made it to the US. Not just Cartoon Network, but TONS of local TV channels would air a lot of these shows, plus channels like Locomotion that would air some of the more hardcore shows and some other really obscure stuff: Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, but also Oh! My Goddess, the Saber Marionette series, Bubblegum Crisis, etc. If you were born in the 90s, you literally grew up with anime. Latin Americans are nuts for anime, ESPECIALLY anime that aired in the 90s and early 2000s. I think this new release of Rurouni Kenshin not having an English dub, while a shame, is not an impediment to its success in the West (I am counting the whole of LatAm as the "West" as well for the sake of this argument). This series will do just fine if they stick to that audience, arguably the largest one in the world. Brazil's and Mexico's populations combined are slightly larger than the entire population of the United States, not to mention the rest of all Latin American countries, (which nearly doubles that number) so if anything it's a much more profitable market than North America. Europeans Spanish and Portuguese also go nuts for these things, and Rurouni Kenshin is popular there too, I reeeeaally think the series will be just fine.
the remake hasn't been bad, but the original is so much better and has so much more detail with the art and backrounds that it gives more of an atmosphere and gives the characters more depth. The relationships and character growth feels more genuine in the original.
Bonsai pop guy here thinks, Japanese runs on Global money. When everything already has a production committee of investors and shareholders running the show, and it's up to them and local BD and merch sales that will decide it.
@@Kaimax61 yeah I don’t really understand why he’s thinking this way when the manga is successful anyway it’s just I felt like the reason why people aren’t talking about this anime is because of other competition at the moment I mean zombie 100 and bleach are in this summer lineup

Per your recommendation saying how good it was I checked out this reboot, as I hadn't even realized it was already out lol. It's really good, glad they are doing the source material justice and how well all the voices and feel of the characters comes through so well. Excited for when they get to the Aoshi fight and the aftermath. Really hope it does well enough to get to Enishi way down the line. I loved the Samurai X Reflections version, but the manga told the story in a much more complete and enjoyable way, really feel like this anime could do it justice
What an amazing series, plagued by the controversies surrounding it's author. I hope the new anime does continue, though in my opinion it's a miracle this was even greenlit in the first place.
I never watched the 90's anime and I'm really liking this remake. I wanted to get into Kenshin but never got the chance to watch the original show. The remake has been awesome so far. Hope we get to see the whole story.
“Between mexico Brasil and Japan” that’s pretty disrespectful to all LATIN AMERICA. That Spanish sub isn’t only for mexico. The previous Rurouni Kenshin anime on their Spanish version wasn’t even dubbed there (I think it was in Colombia but don’t quote me on that). Also, the new anime already changed the Raijuta from the manga, something that the previous animation also did. Btw the previous animation improved the coward Raijuta a lot giving him more deep motives and a whole armada, with some interesting characters at the same time showing the clash of two eras. It was moving to see that old fat samurai with the long spear killing officers and then he being shot to death. But you didn’t mention any of that, you only focused on the little girls and the medieval knights. Worth to mention: all those episodes you never been able to watch outside the dvds, people in Latin America watched them aired on tv, and I’m not talking about toonami, but local tv broadcasts. That speaks a lot about the market of anime of that era in Latin America, so you should consider that the next time you consider “Spanish = Mexico” and forget all the other countries in Latin America that also speaks Spanish. Anime has been huge there in Latin America for decades.
Didn't know they remade the anime! Last time I watched the classic was a few years before the pandemic. Never read the manga but the panels you showed actually look pretty good! Might just be the nostalgia, but I love when you cover these classics! :D
While it might have been 2003 that Kenshin hit Toonami, it was one of those anime that was popular on VHS/DVD in the late 90s and early 00s that if you were lucky you would find at a cool rental shop or specialty movie store near you that had imports, kind of like Evangelion.
“Ah, I see you are a man of culture as well” 🥂 Good video tackling the new Kenshin anime, as I have yet to fully sit down and watch the first season. Having grown up with the original series, I knew it wasn’t faithful 100% as with most adaptations in the late 90’s that came out as the manga was still ongoing, but yes there were still some fond memories from that show - especially the kick ass OPs and EDs (Sobakasu, Heart of Sword, 1/2, etc). Takes you back to a fun time and before the anime boom hit the US - and when I first saw it here in Manila in ‘98 it was dubbed in English by Sony using voice actors who were also familiar from Robotech and even the Street Fighter II Animated Movie. Also good use of Bushido Blade, MGS, and Yakuza 0’s Club Sunshine and BGMs. 🔥🎉
the new opening is very good, but the songs from the first anime, besides Sobakasu, we had song like Heart Of Sword, Tactics, Dame!, 1/3 Junjou Na Kanjou, 4th avenue cafe, it's very difficult if you have songs like that in front of you 😋 I didn't know there was no English dubbing yet (to be honest I didn't know there were dubbing already). Great video :D
In my opinion the original Ruroni Kenshin from 1996 it was made more for kids. It had more comedy , On the other hand the new version is more serious and for adults.
The lack of English dubs (for this series & others) is probably part of the recent actors strike. But the series seems ok so far & I hope it can finish the Jinchu arc. The original series was the beginning of the filler arc phenomenon that preceded Naruto & Bleach. Remember the sumo, train & pirate girl episodes? The only fillers I didn't mind were the lost engagement ring & painter. Near the end, the original anime was running on fumes.
The US has little to no market for Saint Seiya and it thrives in latino america and parts of europe and has been having constant adaptations and products for the last 30+ Years. Just one anedoctal example we can further explore sure. Yes the US is a big market, and absolutely woudl not hurt to have, but its not the end all.
As a hardcore fan of the original anime I have loved the remake, though original OST was better. I also fear what you fear about the future of it though and it is pretty sad so I hope to somehow be miraculously proven wrong and it gets to go through the entire story. Right now just going to enjoy it while we have it.
The original OST is probably what I miss the most about it. When you hear those first few notes of Kimi wa Dare o Mamotte Iru... it's like you just swallowed a pound of Member Berries!
It was dubbed to Latin-American Spanish in 1997 in Colombia. Weirdly since the scripts were a translation of original scripts from Sony's attempt at getting the series in the US market.
Definitely miss the 90's animation and music. I have a hard time really loving any newer anime nowadays. They all seem like they are cookie-cutter or overly polished to the point of being dull. Like the scenes never have interesting camera work, it's always just a still shot with the characters perfectly in the middle and the character designs don't feel as heartfelt either. And I really liked a lot of the creative liberties the 90's anime took diverting from the manga. And definitely nothing will ever compare to the OVA's; the animation, art style and action were phenomenal. That being said I've only seen the first episode of the new version so far and I'll definitely watch it as long as they keep making it.
what animation? the 1994 rurouni kenshin BARELY had animation, action scenes were mostly still frames moved around dramatically. The good animated scenes were rare
The entire original anime was never aired on TV...in America. In Southeast Asia, we had the entire run when it was released in the late 90s. Please don't assume everyone in your audience is from the west.
I understand the fear of no getting more Rurouni Kenshin because of the audience, but I have faith that This manga is so Pivotal for the manga industry and what it is today, that out of sheer respect, they will finish it until the end. I don't think any other manga coud survive a controversy like the ona this manga has. So let's hope they adapt it whole
@@seapeajones it's a controversy, and one of the things we've got to take into account that all of the crimes the mangaka got charged for were activities that were perfectly legal in Japan just a year or a couple of years before he got his sentence. It is most certain that the punishment he got, was (from an occidental POV) just a slap on the wrist, and yet it was exemplary in Japan, to clarify that those new laws, were serious and that no one was above them. Not even a prominent aryist. Those kind of "attitudes" have always been a problem with the manga industry and with Japan in general. As an anime fan we've got to deal with these moral conundrums all the time. And I believe that it is necessary to separate the art from the artist if someone wants to enjoy this medium..
@@YetiCoolBrothernow say to me the legality of "it" doesn't matter while a couple of generations ago in the western world, it was legal and pretty normal to marry your daughter at 13 yo to an adult grown man. I don't say it's okay to do it, but those moral conundrums are not objective nor scientific. They are, for many people, something not worthy to think about, if the law says it's ok. And there are plenty of places around the world today where despicable things are legal, and are moving at its own pace to erradicate that behavior.
First, in Latinoamérica the series got dubbed in 1997 in Colombia and subsequently hit it big in most countries of the region, that might be a reason the remake got that dub before English. Second preferring dubbed over subbed? Absolutely Barbaric. Third, as someone who speaks English as a second language, and everybody I know that is also ESL AND watches anime, its either subbed or dubbed in our language, never eng dub. I hope this remake hits it big.

As of today Ep 9 was up and I'm already liking the remake. I hope they'll continue the series until the Jinchuu Arc, or better finish til the end of the manga.
@@gig7932 If you're talking about Jinchuu Arc (Enishi Arc) yes but it was only animated in Rurouni Kenshin Seisou-hen (Reflections) OVA and not that loyal to the source material.
@@thethirdmiko5396 Which is funny that the movies somehow completed the Jinchu arc before the anime but still, the movies have a lot of problems because it crammed so many storylines together to fit the runtime that it didn’t make so much sense. I don’t know if you will agree with me but this is what I can list about why the movies weren’t as good as they were hyped. - Hiruma Kihei and Gohei didn’t exist in the movie. It was Jin-E who was the fake Battosai without any sensible motive behind it. - They introduced Saito in the first movie and Aoshi in the second instead of the other way around. Also, the Oniwaban didn’t exist and didn’t get killed by Kanryu somehow. - Sanosuke and Yahiko were just caricatures of themselves. No character development at all even though they are so crucial for Kenshin’s growth in the manga. Yahiko even took care of the dojo when Kenshin’s out of commission in Jinchu. He’s technically Robin to Kenshin’s Bat (tousai) man. - Many of Juppongatana members were absent. The worst case was the absent of Anji and his Futae no Konami training. - No proper backstory for Seta Soujirou. - Kaoru was written to be a damsel in distress for eternity even though she was actually a damsel in distress in just Jinchu arc. The Jin-E affair wasn’t even considered the meat of Tokyo arc in the manga. - The only improvement that the movies did better than the manga was Shishio and his final showdown. He is so terrifying and having the final showdown in the warship landing in Tokyo gave the sense of urgency and higher stake than battles on Mount Hiei in Kyoto. - The soundtrack in “The Beginning” kinda ruined it for me, Should have used the one from “Trust and Betrayal”. - No Frankenstein Kaoru’s fake corpse even though it was crucial to Jinchu arc and emphasis how much Kaoru means to Kenshin. In Manga, she’s a light in Kenshin’s darkness. In the movie, she’s just a not so good replacement for Tomoe and it was for Kenshin, instead of for Enishi. Also, the fake corpse helped Aoshi’s character development as well to show how he’s a good detective and he’s like one of a few people on earth who completely understands what Kenshin had been through. - Kenshin was dead inside when “Kaoru” died. It was until Yahiko got in trouble and Tomoe’s ghost told him that Kaoru is still alive that he came back to life again. It’s an equivalent of Bruce Wayne climbing out of prison scene in The Dark Knight Rises. We didn’t get that scene in the movie. - No Oibore, albeit he’s the most important character of Jinchu arc. - Enishi in the movie ended up in jail crying about Tomoe’s diary. His life was practically over. Enishi in manga never got himself behind bars but instead went to Rakuninmura and is in a process of healing with his father by his side. - Kenshin passing the Sakabatou to Yahiko is such a big event in the manga and it feels earned thanks to both of their character development.
@@nont18411 I agree on all your points here, but as you have said, they cannot cram all the source material in film medium due to obvious reasons such as time limit. I just disagree about the soundtrack of The Beginning, I think it's good and some of the tracks were inspired by Trust and Betrayal (obviously they can't directly re-use the original soundtrack of the OVA). thanks for your insights btw!
It's been enjoyable so far. The OP theme gave me a bad first impression, and the music is definitely not as memorable in general, but I can live with that.
To me the 90s Kenshin anime adaptation was really defined by it's music. And the modern adaptation's score and soundtrack just do not live up to that and will, unfortunately, be lesser because of that. At least imo.
Kenshin is a lot more aggressive in this new remake. I don't mean the fights, I mean his personally. In the original, Kenshin is basically Yoda. He's uber pacifist, until you push him hard enough. Then shit gets real. In this new remake, I feel like he's far more willing to answer with his blade then he was in the original anime. Also, they took out most of the goofiness, which in my opinion is part of the original anime's charm. No more "oro oro oro" from Kenshin.
i will concede that season 3 was not good, but i still had a good time. i still watch it when i do my re watches of kenshin every year or two. still one of the best anime ever. right up there with dbz, yu yu hakusho, and gundam seed
I also think that it's unfortunate that the art cannot be separated from the author for this instance. There are many instances where the creators of great things aren't as good as we think they were at first, but the art they created is judged on its own merit. I hope that the resurgence and popularity of this anime, for all its flaws, give Rurouni Kenshin that chance.
Separating the art from the artist is a personal decision, not something you can ask someone else to do. Especially when the artist is still monetarily benefiting from it.
One of my favorite series of all time. Possibly most favorite. Love the Og anime, manga, OVAs and Live Actions. I am so excited and i really hope it gets more attention and appreciation soon! I do have some quibbles here and there about some production choices, took me awhile to get used to Kenshin's VA (love everyone else's) but im liking it more now. The other small things are some of the subtitles word choices and grammar, and some of the tiny changes to fight scene screenplay/shots that hit less impactful than OG or manga. But i am loving the extra emphasis on the history and politics! Cant wait for your extra long Rurouni Kenshin video!
The fact that they are showing real progress in the romance and making all the historical references shows that they are doing something meaningful and significant. This is absolutely a redemption for Berserk 2016.

Africans, especially the French-speaking ones, will rlaly with you Latinos. We are in love with KoF.
Yeah, Samurái X/Rurouni Kenshin was really popular in LatAm when they used to air it on Cartoon Network in the early 2000s. Though I have some issues with the new anime's Neutral Spanish dub, Crunchyroll sent the anime to a smaller studio in Cuernavaca, Mexico and while the voice acting is decent, most of the voice actors are don't have that much experience and some characters like Kenshin himself sound kind of weird
To be fair, Samurai X never had a consistent dub, the first anime was dubbed in Colombia, the anime movie was dubbed in Mexico City and all the live-action movies were dubbed in Argentina.

What makes rurouni kenshin so badass was the OST and the score music. it was priceless in the original anime
Noriyuko Asakura - Departure
That whistle that played every time Kenshin appeared is like a staple of my childhood. I will never forget it. It always felt like the hero was finally here to save the day when things got bad.
100% agree. That was the biggest disappointment for me.
This series was really popular here in Latin America. They changed the name to Samurai X and they showed all the episodes dubbed. A lot of the people from my generation have fond memories of the opening. I guess i will give a chance to this new adaptation.
I remember watching some episodes of the 90s Rurouni Kenshin, or Samurai X as it was called, on Cartoon Network back in the early 2000s when I was in elementary school
I recently watched some episodes from that dub and I have to admit that it sounds weird, but that's maybe because it was dubbed in Colombia and they didn't have a lot of experience dubbing anime, but some voices, like Kaoru's actually sounded kind of nice
The animated movie movie was dubbed in Mexico City and the live-action ones were dubbed in Argentina, but the new anime is being dubbed in Cuernavaca, Mexico with actors that aren't as well know as those from Mexico City, but they're doing a good job, though the dub is trying to be more faithful and honestly I kind of missed those mistranslations like calling Kenshin "vagabundo" instead of "rurouni" or referring to him as "Battosái el destajador" in the new dub they just call him "Hitokiri battósai", they dub also refers to Kaoru's dojo as "Kamiya kasshin-ryū" in the Colombian dub they translated it as "escuela/dojo de ken-do estilo Kamiya".
I got one petpeeve with the remake, and its the lack battousai eyes.
The empty amber eyes and the menacing glare are so iconic with Kenshi's psychological shift that without them, the tense scenes that bring such a monster feel empty.

Anime in Latin America usually arrived uncensored and some shows that never caught on in the States, like Saint Seiya, Slam Dunk or Sakura Cardcaptor, became popular series here
Samurai X was of weird in that its LatAm dub was made in Colombia instead of Mexico like most of the popular anime from that time, and while the acting wasn't as good as those series dubbed in Mexico, or Venezuela and Chile for that matter, it still has its charm.
But speaking about Chilean dubs in general, I really like the ones for anime like Sorcerous Stabber Orphen, Marmalade Boy, Sonic X, Zoids and recently Edens Zero (though in the second season the EZ is now being directed in Mexico, though almost all of the Chilean cast was left intact)
If we're talking about cartoons, Avatar the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, Jake Long and Chalk Zone were great as well

I have not watched the new series now just the trailer...but man the direction of the original was something else, the art, the background the framing everything has so much character when it's not being goofy, but still packs a punch
i think the Remake has been pretty fantastic so far but idk if it beats the original anime for me, at least yet

The answer is that it is ruroni kenshin my only criticism for this anime is the music/soundtrack for this show not bad but could be better
yup
Man, the new anime is so freaking good
Don't get me wrong, I love the OG Rurouni Kenshin, and I am happy about this reboot (so far).
I dont mind a more masculine kenshin. It’s not like they made him a kenshiro or Jonathan joester. Peace.
the remake hasn't been bad, but the original is so much better and has so much more detail with the art and backrounds that it gives more of an atmosphere and gives the characters more depth. The relationships and character growth feels more genuine in the original.

Good video tackling the new Kenshin anime, as I have yet to fully sit down and watch the first season.
the new opening is very good, but the songs from the first anime, besides Sobakasu, we had song like Heart Of Sword, Tactics, Dame!, 1/3 Junjou Na Kanjou, 4th avenue cafe, it's very difficult if you have songs like that in front of you 😋

Bruh, you forgot the absolute timeless banger, It's gonna rain.
Yeah pretty much I feel like it might animated everything but it might end off a cliffhanger though

It was dubbed to Latin-American Spanish in 1997 in Colombia. Weirdly since the scripts were a translation of original scripts from Sony's attempt at getting the series in the US market.
Globlin Slayer S2 was a bit lackluster imo.

First, in Latinoamérica the series got dubbed in 1997 in Colombia and subsequently hit it big in most countries of the region, that might be a reason the remake got that dub before English.

To me the 90s Kenshin anime adaptation was really defined by it's music. And the modern adaptation's score and soundtrack just do not live up to that and will, unfortunately, be lesser because of that. At least imo.
Music and voice acting for me.
