I would recommend rewatching this one and focusing on Paul all the way through. He looks like he's staring into the flayed corpse of Cthulhu and it may be the most terrified we see him in the entire show
I’ll be honest. When I first saw this years ago, I had to replay that scene. I was mortified too, but I realized I didn’t pay attention to his face. 😂 you have no idea how hard I was laughing.
This may just be me looking at this scene from Paul’s POV, but I think Jeff’s portrayal of the boss’s song was intentionally off-putting. This is his boss, someone that he sees everyday and is an imposing figure to him, acting overly chipper while singing a musical number at him. The guy’s every instinct is shouting that something’s wrong. They actually managed to get the audience to sympathize with anti-musical Paul instead of the singing boss. I think it’s brilliant!
@singwithAshley im pretty sure that the vocals are off on purpose to accentuate that something is VERY WRONG lol. I think the vocals being off adds to the performance. It adds to the creep factor since this is a horror-comedy. Its suppose to be funny and scary
I think some of it is also that because there are so few actors, he has to portray distinct characters and the way he wrote and sang this song was in part to set Mr. Davidson apart from his other characters. I'll admit I often skip this one when listening to the soundtrack 😅
Paul reminds me of the reluctant hero. He never imagined big things for himself, he likes his simple, predictable life and suddenly he is thrust into this situation that forces to take a (very reluctant) step into the spotlight
In one of Jeff's streams recently, he was like "I'm not sure why I don't do that for myself" when talking about adapting the song to the vocalist after it has been cast. I expect this is one of the examples of when he could have made changes to make it more natural for himself.
I feel that way too. It seems like he wrote the high notes in this song, as well as all the other songs he performs, deliberately to challenge himself vocally. I guess the ridiculous falsetto fits the over-the-top character he is playing, but it is kind of uncomfortable to listen to.
8:42 all the musical is meta!!!the "lights of!" scream, all the music being diegetic, and the lyrics!! 😊😊😊 My favourite has already happened. It's in the tittle song, in the bridge, because thy literally sing "this is the bridge, Paul" 😂
I often feel this same way about Jeffs voice, I think he often really pushes the songs to the limit of his skills at the time, and occasionally he doesn't quite hit every moment. My preferences are actually his very few lower register songs.
Also want to add as I watch your outro, that we often see examples of the "reluctant hero" and I think Paul is an example of a "reluctant protagonist." He is the last type of person who should be leading a musical which is exactly why the story is so much better through his eyes. He's literally living inside his worst fear

@@singwithAshley Oh, Ashley, Tin Can Brothers are currently releasing their new show "The Great Debate" which isn't a musical, but more of a comedy game show and it's so much fun. They had split the first show into 4 parts (each about 20 minutes), of which 3 of them had already been posted. The last part premiers on July 4th. Are you interested in watching it and joining us for the premiere of the last part? I like to introduce you to my fellow TCB fans there.
