I feel like Emma's monologue and Bill and Ted's head kicking scene are two of the best acted scenes in the show, but for totally different reasons. They're both so well-delivered. Also, I love how the aliens grant Charlotte's wish for her husband to be there and support her by having her perform this number with him singing backup. You could even say them attacking Ted together is wish fulfilment for her. It's so darkly ironic, and I think happens a few times in this show
@@CantDraw-bq6pj I agree about the 2 scenes! When rewatching, I thought, man this is a great cut of an episode! 2 great scenes and an iconic song? Yes please!
Another cool lore thing - in the Hatchetfield Mythos you've got the Five Lords in Black. Wiggly the green one was the feature in Black Friday; here it's the blue one "Pokotho, also known as Pokey or by his title The Singular Voice, is the most uncompromising of the Lords in Black. He has the ability to possess people and make them a part of his hive." Which is why the theme color is blue - blue guts/brains/blue lights. In fact though it feels like an alien invasion from outer space, it's not - the meteor is Pokotho arriving from the Black and White into Hatchetfield. The way the hive mind takes over is offering you everything you want to lure you into joining, which is why Paul's Boss sings "What Do You Want, Paul?" over and over but Paul gets some immunity in that he's basically happy and doesn't want big magical things the Lords in Black can bargain with. Charlotte appeals to god that all she wants is her husband back. Bill just wants his daughter back, the Professor wants his college chums around him, and Pokotho manages to assimilate all victims in this manner. It's inevitable to get you via your own desires. (spoiler) Even in the tragic finale you can see this occur. Everybody ironically gets what they want and joins the Pokotho hive-mind. Emma wants to leave Hatchetfield and...sadly, that's how they get her. Lauren Lopez acting out every musical-phobe's utter nightmare during the darkly hilarious curtain call is classic.
@@seven-cats-3 You're right, my bad! I figured she'd only make an initial pass through replies and not see a secondary comment - mea culpa if that's not the case.
I love how meta this show is because it makes the analysis so interesting - characters in a musical typically sing when they’re moved by some great emotion. Every time a character in this show sings, it means they’ve been killed and taken over, but I think the first song we see from each character after they’ve been turned still speaks to their own emotional “I want,” maybe due to the last firings of their neurons before they’re fully turned to the hivemind, idk. Everyone sings “la di da dah day” because that’s a stereotypical opening number, but also because everyone wants a better life - and the song is led by Greenpeace Girl, who actively wants a better world. Nora and Zoey want to sing, dance, and sell coffee - hence cup of roasted coffee, which rapidly turns world domination-y. Show me your hands is technically not Sam’s first song, so maybe the “first song” thing isn’t a sound theory, but it still is a power-tripping cop’s version of an “I want” or “this is what I’m excited about.” Whereas you tied up my heart is just apotheosis motivated, although it probably draws on Sam’s own original personality and memories. And now we have this song, which is so great because what Charlotte apparently wanted and was emotional about was 1) being united with Sam 2) letting out her inner rage. Charlotte’s apotheosis arrived and she went “cool I’m gonna go fuck shit UP.” And I love that for her tbh
I remember laughing so hard when Charlotte said the line “We’re gonna kick your ass, then we’re gonna fucking kick your ass!” probably in my top 3 lines of the musical!
Heck yeah! Excited for this one. Jaime doesn't get many chances to shine vocally (compared with other Starkids at least) but shine she does whenever she gets the chance! 😀 🔥 Side note: Jaime opts up the opening belt at Starkid Homecoming, if you wanna check it out ~ it's feral! (in a good way).
I love how excited Jeff is in this song. What a hype man!! He's just joyous about it. Gets me every time. The dialogue with paul and emma is so sweet and sad. I love how the Langs do these serious beats in every show. Their timing for them is impeccable too. It just works.
The Emma and Paul scene really shows how well Starkid can do emotional scenes despite this being a horror comedy. And then Join Us and Die, what a song. It may be on the lower end of songs for me personally from this musical, but I have to acknowledge that it is still an incredible song. Just not my cup of coffee so to speak
Scenes like these are why I'm so happy you watch the whole show and not just react to the songs. In Ted's scene, my favorite thing is watching Matt Dahan, who has seen the show every night, still laughing in the back. Once, I watched a reaction video to this song, and the guy who was watching pointed out that the creepiest thing about this song is that they don't say "Join us OR die" as some villains usually say, but they say "Join us AND die". I never thought about that before, but I can't unsee it now.
"Kick my head!" I said this in a dnd session once, as a joke. I thought it was hilarious. No one else in the group had seen this musical, so I just sounded silly, lol. I remember hearing that belt at the beginning of the song for the first time and my jaw hit the floor. Didn't know she could do that, and I was genuinely impressed! From that point on, this song has always been one of my two favorites. I just genuinely love it so, so much.
Since you said you already finished the show, I wanted to bring a little context to a comment I left on your first TGWDLM video, that might be fun to consider while you're editing. My comment was about how, at the time this show came out, Jon was completely new to the Starkid fanbase, which ended up being very significant because, after almost the entire show, we are so bought in to him as Paul that him singing comes out of NOWHERE. Let It Out was the first time we heard both Paul and Jon actually sing. I remember the first time I saw the show and how unbelievably effective this was. I think that there are probably other Starkid actors who could have played Paul, but that moment wouldn't hit the same with someone whose singing voice we were already familiar with.
This is probably one of my favorite songs in the Hatchetfield trilogy. All the songs are difficult to place so they are all almost matching for first! When you do get to Nerdy Prudes Must Die I think you will love a lot of the vocals!
Jaime is definitely one of my favorite voices in Starkid, she just has so much range. Like, Cup of Roasted Coffee, Join Us (and die), and then Sherman Young in Black Friday. She also plays Poison Ivy and a character that is basically Harley Quinn in Holy Musical B@man, and she KILLS IT
One of the things I love about Starkid is how they dance across the line between serious and funny moments. You get the emotional conversation between Emma and Paul (which feels like such a gut punch when Emma says "invitation to her funeral", so well performed!) and then get launched into such a great, upbeat song that is silly and enjoyable (in a dark sort of way) Completely different vibes, but Come From Away is my favourite musical and it also manages to quickly transition between silly and serious moments in a way that doesn't feel like unnecessary whiplash, and instead uses the contrast between them to make the funny moments funnier and the serious and sad moments more impactful
For anyone who doesn't know what a coatimundi is, I highly recommend looking them up, they're goofy little guys! They're related to raccoons but if raccoons are trash pandas then coatimundis are more like trash badgers.
We've arrived at my second favourite part of the musical. Two amazing scenes and also an amazing song!! I love her voice.(and i am once again grateful you don't cut out the scenes, despite this being a vocal coach reacts. They add so much value!). Also, I used to listen to this song a lot while walking to school this year. Maybe I was subconsciously very mad at my teachers, who knows.
this is easily one of my favorite songs from this show, everything about how it sounds and how it fits into the plot is so well done. the next song and scene have some of my favorite acting in this show and i’m excited to see your reaction!
The only bad thing about this song is that it doesn't have an extra verse/bridge and chorus lol... Although it's probably better for the show that it gets cut off... Still, it's so much fun ^_^;
This one is one of my favorites off this musical. Not only does it slap, but this is the point where stuff got real for me here lol Oh crap Charlotte’s back and she’s got blue guts and they’re singing about how joining them and dying are one and the same Was on the edge of my seat from this point forward
In one of your Black Friday videos I said I'd love to see Joey as the dentist from Little Shop of Horrors, but the original fan cast I came up with was Jaime as Audrey. She's so good at doing a quirky meek character voice and then blowing you away with her belting. And while her recent Starkid roles have been more one-note and comical, her characters in the Potter shows and MAMD have this wide-eyed sweetness with a melancholic undercurrent that I associate with Audrey. (Little Shop of Horrors was the first musical I was obsessed with as a kid, can you tell haha)

@singwithAshley I love rhis song eternally, but my only issue with it is in the soundtrack Jamie’s beautifully opening and other parts is edited and looses that rasp/grit that I love
It kind of doesn't make sense: why did Sam have to rip Charlotte's guts out to convert her, when all the others had to do is drink contaminated coffee? And if Charlotte could continue to sing with her intestines hanging out, why did simply shooting her and Sam with a bullet kill them?
I always figured they went down because Hidgens shot them both in the head, like zombies (I guess Bill must have taught him a thing or two). Lately though, I've started to wonder if they can just grow back from the goo, and that's how "Paul" comes back at the end. In that case it would need a bit more explaining (but maybe not much more).
Emma’s “HE HAS A DAUGHTER” when they start going towards bill never fails to break my heart 🙏😔
@@Dee-cy8ng I probably missed that because it was echoing in my own head!
