So... I took the lawn mower out for a walk....
Your rope needs a swivel going into the collar……hope this helps .
We recently got our first goat and I remembered you doing this in an older video. Love it I can put her anywhere. Great idea
Now that's a very useful tip.
Thank you SO much for posting this! I'm about to get my first goats and I'll be needing to tie them out to eat some really thick thistles I have, but someone was saying it was dangerous because of the tangling issue. What a great tip, and I even already have the PVC on hand.
That is my everyday struggle with my goat. I will try your ideas. Thanks
You are my favorite. Always got something good.
Wow, thank you!
I needed this info! Thanks! I think I’m going to put my sheep out beyond my fence to clear some more of my land and I wasn’t sure how to keep them from twisting up. :)
Like everyone else, I'm so happy to have this bit of knowledge. I love your channel.
I am glad you found it helpful!
thats a very smart idea
That is such a GREAT IDEA!!! never would have thot of that... Thank You.
Very good tip, I want to get goats at some point in the future
Awesome idea thank you
if you cut a sharp edge on end of posts it helps post go past rocks
Looooovvvvveeeeee trick you saved my farm
Good tip
Great! We are getting our first baby goat and looking for tips and tricks
Thank you very much for this, this will help me on my farm with fencing problems and grazing my 2 sheep 😅
I am glad!
Try using a snap on each end of the rope talking about snaps that have the ends that spin.
I do this with my goats. The pvc is a good idea. Also I switched from collars to halters. In my opinion the halter is more secure so they don’t slip off if you have an animal that pulls. I’ve been using cement blocks to tie my goats to works for the most part they can move them some though. I’m working on some goat/sheep grazing tractors for next season hopefully.
cement blocks, what a great idea! I'll try that as well.
I tried rope graizing two lambs today. The ewe lamb is bottle fed so she had no problem. The ram lamb (who nursed and is weaned but not reproductive age, yet) wanted NOTHING to do with it. He slipped out at first. I had to catch him 🙄. After that I made it a little tighter. He choked himself trying to get away from me. He's fine, but it's still so sad. I'll switch to a halter tomorrow.
BTW, I made a sheep tractor but wanted to mow close to my house where the tractor can't go.
Thank you! This is genius! We have a couple spots that I've been trying to deal with by hand because I couldn't figure out how to safely rig one of the goats because he constantly tables himself. I'm going to try this. Also have a different goat that wanna a circle and winds herself to the post. Do you have a smarter way to attach her to the post so the rope will follow her around?
I have seen places with fences made from teepeed small logs and cross bars rather than set posts. Now I know why: rocks. You gotta have the skinny trees for logs though, too. Running cable lines tie-outs like they use for dogs probably won't work either because, they need to put their heads down to graze
The moment I saw you talk about using conduit I immediately though of using old pieces of garden hose. What do you think?
He's totally cute.
Get old tires pour concrete with the tea post in the middle place where needed just as good as driving the in the ground just coast a little more
What do you do when the ewe lambs? Do you still have them tethered?
What kind of collar do you have on the lamb? Also, are you able to leave the lamb unattended? For how long? Thank yoU!
Love the video. Could you give us an update on mr dirt?? Thx
How do the sheep peroform compared to the goats? Do they respond differently to being tied in?
I’d tie a 2” solid, steel ring on both ends of the rope so I could just attach it to the halter and anchor post with a swivel clip or a carabiner. Just to reduce wear on a knot for added security. I do like this idea. It should reduce the chances of entanglement while foraging on trees and in brambles/briers
Sounds like a solution!
I use carabiners all the time with my sheep. I like how easy it is
Do you have to have them tied out near each other? I know they get lonely but wonder how long each day do you keep them on grazing steaks and how close to each Fosho
can you do this with kunekune pigs and a sturdy tree? maybe with a pig harness? don't like electric fencing but have a lot of woods and grassland on my property that i'd love to give them access to. thanks!!
I have never tried to tether a pig personally.
I am a little paranoid about my pig fencing because I have had new feeder pigs get out and then had to shoot them because we couldn't catch them before they made it to the interstate and caused an accident we would be liable for.
We use a single strand of electrical wire just inside a fence that is a visual barrier, like cow panels or hog panels. Once they are trained to the wire life is a lot easier.
When they are really small we only keep the piglets under our deck because there are no spaces they can squeeze through and it's set in concrete so they can't go under it. Once they know where home is and who feeds them we move them to the electric wire fencing so that if they do get out they will come back when we call them for food instead of running away.
at what point do u eat the goat?
Since sheep and goats need companions do you tie within seeing distance of each other?
Yes. They ropes reach far enough for them to share a water but not get looped on each other with their ropes.
Can you tie out almost full grown lambs or does this only work for younger lambs?
We use it for our adult sheep too. Easiest to train them when young, some don't take to it though. For the first time this year we had a whether (castrated male sheep) that kept hurting himself with it. The ewe lamb figured it out really fast. Sometimes I wonder if some of their smarts go away when they lose their family jewels.
I really want goats, but my husband doesn't. He doesn't want the expense of feed.
LearningCurveAcres Don't they basically feed off the land?
We have 8 months of winter dwhere we would have to provide feed. They won't dig through 2 feet of snow to find dead grass.
