Imagine if a few small groups of "government employees" aka regular people that have inflated authority, to inhibit and restrict the working class on yet another simple pleasure that 98% of the population use and enjoy with no ill intent didn't do that....
Well, it used to be that way. I've been a bourbon drinker for over 25 years. Bought my first Rock Hill Farms and Blanton's in 2001 for about 39 bucks each. The bourbon boom caused all these problems, and then I could no longer just pick up Stagg, OWA, etc. right off the shelf.
@@thekid6109 baseball cards are a bad analogy because they only make so many. Only so many George Brett rookie cards out there. They are still making all these bourbons everybody wants.
@@thekid6109 That's an awful take. One is a collectable without a set of laws governing distribution. @@jeffschmidt4102 I cannot see any scenario of making it legal to sell your own bottles that would not make things exponentially worse than they already are for allocations and secondary market price gouging, which is why I asked. I what would you like people to legally be able to do?
@@DaveH8905 the secondary market is as bad as it is because of those who would pay those ridiculous prices. It shouldn’t be any different than any other property you own and want to get rid of. You already paid taxes on it. Why should it be different?
@@jeffschmidt4102 because you can’t resell just anything any way you want to. There are zillions of things like that. I can’t go sell my oxycodone, why should I be able to sell my alcohol? The whole thing about who is responsible for secondary is a circle debate. That wasn’t my point. My point was that making selling your own alcohol legal would only exacerbate the problem, to massive proportions. If they just enforced the law things would be better.
I appreciate your content. Your UA-cam channel is where I learned about the three tier system and how the market works. I appreciate your thoughtful presentation about the legality. Still looking for you to do one of those stories where you’ve been drinking a lot and you tell the story about the bootlegger.
Your point towards the end of the video is what I was thinking all along; of all the crimes that states should be concerned with, this seems minor. What a waste of taxpayer funds. Thanks for sharing this story!
Thanks for the info. It really makes you think about common whisky behavior that you typically do not think of as being illegal. Thanks for being transparent with your viewership.
I heard of this story a few months back, and it was quickly dismissed and mocked on Reddit as a scare tactic to keep others from trying to get/flip allocations in Ohio. It nice to get this follow up
At LEAST this guy was a pro secondary dealer and would truly be considered a bootlegger by the average man on the street. Cracking down on any private resale of legal, taxed alcohol whilst billionaires and corporations continue to evade many billions in tax is disgraceful, but knowing the Alphabet Bois and their inability to understand the phrase "bigger fish to fry", I was fully expecting this to be the story of some guy getting nabbed for flipping only one bottle on one occasion.
Government is like the mafia,... you're not allowed to get ahead even an inch without giving them their cut first. "That's a nice life you got there, citizen,.. it'd be a shame if anything untoward were to happen to it."
Excellent video. The alcohol laws are very outdated, specifically related to the 3 tier system. I would love to see our federal leaders modernize or eliminate the prohibition era laws. I would be curious to hear your take on whether “bottle flippers” and “building a bourbon community” are mutually exclusive. IMO, having someone hoard up an inventory, forcing others to pay secondary market prices is contrary to building a community. And as always, love your channel.
As an Ohio resident in a large city I will tell residents of other states that there is not any Weller on the shelves. It is allocated one bottle per day when available and that isn't often. It would take a group effort to acquire any quantity.
Thanks for keeping us all informed. On the flip side, I'm not a fan of flippers. I pass on good bottles all the time, and if I see a "good bottle" I want or one that is rare or high in demand I take ONE for myself and leave the rest for others. I also have to laugh at liquor stores that try and convince the community that they are with us, but when you go in to support them they have insane prices. I'm ok with the local liquor store charging a literal few dollars more than what you can get a bottle for at TW or Costco, but double or triple is just stupid, and when I see it I walk out. Even if their regularly available bottles are priced in line I won't support them. Keep the prices close to MSRP or keep the bottles.
I was wondering recently if with the rise in bourbon and the grey market popularity over the last few years if we'll start hearing these stories. But ultimately I think you're correct with your point in the end....
When I buy bourbon, it’s always to drink and share with friends, never to sell. I hate the secondary market. I’ve been wanting to try Stagg but refuse to pay $300 for the bottle from a local liquor store.
Don’t cave to the nonsense. None of these bourbons are worth remotely close to what secondary losers are snaking people for. Anyone I know that gets into bourbon I happily blind with the most hyped bottles in my collection. Always shocked and pleasantly surprised when they realize how full of crap a lot of these prices are.
I love trading bottles and samples with others. Very rarely have I sold a bottle to someone. Sucks that this guy had to go through all this but I appreciate him sharing his story for our benefit. Cheers
My wife and I were just talking about this exact situation and how that would work! Thanks so much for the information and great video! I love you content!
Great story. I can say that the OWA doesn’t flow as freely in Ohio anymore. 2 -3 years ago, I could walk into the store after work and it would be sitting on the counter/shelf on delivery day (I would even bypass it because I knew I could always grab one). Now, it is gone to the line at opening. Trading has changed the landscape.
People crap on the secondary market because of ridiculous pricing, but at least it can bottles in the hands of the people that are willing to pay for it. I just wish that it wouldn't take bottles out of the hands of us that don't want to pay crazy prices but still want to try new, special bottles
My quarrel with secondary is that it’s mostly a scam by select groups and individuals. If you think it’s just demand from regular consumers who would like to buy a bottle and maybe a backup making things this way - I have a bridge for sale.
I have some friends/coworkers who live in Utah and I wouldn't ask them to send me any bottles because I've heard they are strict on shipping alcohol illegally and prosecute it as a felony.
Fentanyl pouring across our border and this is what law enforcement gets tough on
Kind of ridiculous with all that is going on in the world, thanks for sharing!
When are they gonna regulate the secondary prices in the stores?! That's what really matters.
Imagine how much more enjoyable whiskey hunting would be if stores all sold at MSRP and we didn't have flippers. Secondary is miserable.
Imagine if a few small groups of "government employees" aka regular people that have inflated authority, to inhibit and restrict the working class on yet another simple pleasure that 98% of the population use and enjoy with no ill intent didn't do that....

That’s crazy that it was taken that far with all the larger crimes in the world, trafficking comes to mind…
Great video once again Randy! Hopefully these laws get revisited soon! Thanks for all you do for the community🥃

Never underestimate how much the government wants your hard-earned money...
Agreed, thousands of illegal criminal aliens crossing our southern border, and they are focusing on this? Insanity!

They want the crime, it helps them pass more laws that infringe on honest peoples rights.
