Are you gonna get a Santa Fe version in the future. I know the reasoning behind the paint scheme was Southern Pacific and Santa Fe were trying to merge
SP owned the Cotton Belt it was literally a shell railroad that was in all intents and purposes just there to keep the Texas Regulatory Commission happy that required Texas owned railroad to operate in Texas. They also were on paper the owners of the old Rock Island between Tucumcari NM and St Louis the Golden State Route. If SP couldn't get something bought due to credit issues Cotton Belt was always the better on paper profiting company and had the resources to get things. They finally ceased to exist even on paper in 1992 after the Rio Grande merger happened.
My favorite scene in the closing video is the three car Santa Fe streamliner with the F unit and fluted cars. Reminds me of the San Diegan running the West Coast. I never get tired of seeing it.
Eric as an SP fan I love these locos, but one thing, you need to acquire yourself an SP bay window caboose. A tuscan brown with orange ends. Or a nice SP scarlet red cotton belt wide vision caboose. It just completes the look so much better than the UP /SP heritage fantasy caboose. Thanks
I think Lionel missed an opportunity to also sell the twin Kodachrome variant from the Santa Fe, as well as a fantasy skene of if the merger actually went through with the SPSF fully written out on the locomotives. Maybe another cataloging?
'I got a Nikon camera, I can take the photograph, Momma don't take my KodaChrome' away.' My N55 takes great shots then I have them digitized on DVD. Much warmer pictures. I dig this paint scheme.
From what I know about the reason for moving the air intakes to walkway height wasn’t because to get clean air. It was because the air at the top of the tunnels was mixed with the hot exhaust gases and this was then being pulled into the air intakes. The onboard software would then sense the hot air and immediately shutdown the locomotive to prevent damage to the prime mover. To resolve this they moved the intakes to walkway height, where the air is cooler.
Awesome shots of them running through and out of the tunnels on your layout! Love the shot of the light from the headlights approaching the tunnel portal at 18:30. That is why having at least part of the inside of your tunnels finished off in some way can be super worthwhile! Great video!
Something you didn't mention is that the KodaChrome livery can also be seen on Santa Fe locomotives from that same time frame. The two railroads were planning a merger so ahead of it being approved or denied they started using this paint scheme. Southern Pacific would apply only the SP on the side, and the Santa Fe would apply SF. Then once the merger was approved they would only have to apply the last two letters to show all initials of what would've been the Southern Pacific Santa Fe railroad, or "SPSF." Of course we know that this merger was denied since they covered very similar territory and in the coming years Southern Pacific would be merged with the Union Pacific and the Santa Fe with the Burlington Northern. I like this livery because it's a short lived paint scheme and because it has that little bit of influence from the Santa Fe with the design on the front of the engines. If I remember correctly there was only two engines that ever got the entire "SPSF" lettering applied for a planned photo op in anticipation of the approval of the merger, though I don't think they saw any service with the full livery.
SPSF also stood for “shouldn’t paint so fast!”. That was the joke around the SP around that time. My father worked for the SP for 38 years. He had several jobs during that time; was a freight agent in Modesto and head of customer coding on Market street in San Francisco.
Awesome video Eric. As always I learned a little more about different types of Diesel Engines. I also like the colors on the engine. If I was an O Scale guy I would choose the Black Widow version! Thanks for sharing as always!
I love the paint scheme on these engines, it's the same daylight colors the GS steam engines had. I also like that they differentiated the powered and base units from each other, another difference I notice was that on the roof of the cab on the base unit its black and on the powered unit its yellow. Great video Eric
Glad you pointed out slight differences in colors of add on details. At first glance you would not notice. In the background noticed the vision line Canadian Pacific horse car. Would like a review video at some point on this car if possible. Would help in deciding on purchase! Canadian Pacific my favorite road.
While watching this I got thinking about the various locos I would want if I ever get time and space for a wonderful layout like you have and came to the interesting conundrum... There are 8 Locos I really love and would love to own, 7 of them are CP locos and 1 is a CN.... How would I justify having one Odly different road named loco on the layout hahaha.
For the justification, ehh they both work in Canada, so it could be a unit working in CP area (like how sometimes you may see a NS engine on a UP train or vise versa)
Only 50$ difference between SuperBass and Powered😮 IMHO You buy two powered, change the number on one if you choose. They are so bright you almost need sunglasses.😊 Nice presentation. Thanks Eric
Wow 😮🎉 these are amazing remember the model railroader reading about these running tunnels in California amazing photos. Love these very nice Lionel done there homework making these units looks and sounds perfect. Love SP caboose SF had these units during merger.
8:48 “this little unit” *sir, that is the AIR CONDITIONER UNIT* most SP EMD power had these fitted to the cab roofs. (This excludes early E and F units).
These are some of my favorite diesels you've got, I wish you got Kodachrome units sooner, lol. And as a joke Lionel should do a Kodachrome steam engine lol
Good job on the video, as per usual. Certainly enjoyed it. So I was thinking that this particular paint scheme was a direct result of a pending merger, at that time, between Santa Fe and Southern Pacific. The war bonnet look on the side and the stripes on the side of the nose seemed to indicate a Santa Fe influence . Am I correct on that?
Hey Eric. Like you, I bought the Sd40T-2s but I am having some problems with the pickup rollers getting caught in the gaps in my Atlas Switches. I know you use Atlas switches too. Have you had any problems with that? I made a video on my channel talking about it. I love your awesome video.
I did have issues with that at first. That happens if the rollers have turned slightly and are not facing in a straight line from front to back. To fix it you have to get a good screwdriver and tighten them down so that they don't get knocked off center. I've had it happen on other locomotives in the past as well.
@@Ericstrains Thank you for the response. I will try that. I've been watching your vids since 2008 and you inspired me to build my own layout. You are the best.
I did learned the history about Southern Pacific railroad some railfans early in the 1990s but these locomotives have been scrap they don’t run those anymore There is a Union Pacific tunnel motors
@@Ericstrains a “entry level” Lionchief Plus Mikado from the 2023 catalogue goes for $699.99, I don’t think most kids these days can afford $700. Lionel is killing the hobby for newcomers such as the “gen z” people. However luckily MTH still is producing their RAILKING items, which blow Lionchief right out of the water.
Video Notes:
1) This video has chapters, for those who wish to skip around.
Happy early birthday to you Eric🚂

Yaay I love capitalism and shell companies
When I think back to all the I learned in High School.... It's a wonder I can think at all!

Nice units. The box on top of the cab is an air conditioning unit. Excellent video, as always.

Awesome review on these Eric the pint is wonderful I may have to order one for sure
They give us those nice bright colors.
Give us the greens of summers.

Yeah same basic principal. Bad air up top, good air down below.
Great video keep em coming I'll keep watching
I’m loving this new production style Eric! Keep it up!

Both of the SPSF engines were destroyed in the cojone pass wreck and explosion
The powered unit also has a yellow cab roof and the Superbass has a black cab roof.

I love the night shots Eric. Do you have blue lights in the train room, or is that your camera in low light?
Blue lights
I almost bought this yesterday, but went with the southern Pacific heritage instead and Katy
Love the Kodachrome engines! I really wish that SPSF merger happend in 1987, it's unfortunate that congress denied the merger.

Those that were fans of the railroad called it Shouldn't Paint So Fast as they were painting the engines before the merger was even BEFORE THE ICC.
Eric do you need to buy the super base? How are sounds without the super base?
They're fine with just one unit. The superbass just adds to it.
Mmmmmmm… KodaChrome… 🤤

The radio chatter sounds much too polite. The paragon radios chatter sounds more realistic; mumbled and curt.
I admit the bass unit sounds cool but still very expensive for a non-powered unit.
Lionel, always expensive. Not for kids anymore.
They still make plenty of entry level stuff for kids that’s affordable.
