@@karissakline6765 totally agree. We just went on vacation and our place hadn’t been cleaned when we got there, we called the rental place and let them know. It took a few hours, but they sent someone out to clean it and then refunded us our cleaning fee ($127) and called us back afterward to check in. That was the right thing to do. These people are a joke.

I own a holiday let as a side business. If someone was doing construction at unreasonable hours and ruined my client's holiday, I'd at least partially reimburse them. The negative review (& word of mouth - that client will tell others) I'd get if I didn't would be more costly than a partial refund. Clients tell me that they book our property because we have all 5 star reviews. Ruining that would cost me several bookings a year - hardly worth risking that for a few hundred.
As for the fridge, I would have popped in and tested it before they got there - especially if it had a history of breaking (repairman claimed a history of breakdowns and, most likely, a struggle to get paid if he wanted cash upfront). Reimbursement would go through the books and help keep the tax bill down, so that would be easy enough to arrange, and I'd also ensure that something was organised by way of an apology for the inconvenience - like a hamper of goodies, or tickets for a local attraction, etc.
How these people got to treat this very reasonable woman and her family like crap, and still have a business, is beyond me... 🤷‍♀️

I agree. Also, considering their crystal clear carelessness for the very nice, reasonable plaintiff? Perhaps she should have been awarded more for the whole mess of an ordeal. Broken fridge? Not having the appropriate furniture advertised? The racket upstairs to top it off? (I know, I know, not within their control. HOWEVER! Considering the lousy vacation this family must've had, I think she should have been awarded much more!)
Imagine being on your 1 week vaca and having to call and wait around for a fridge repair person, be around as they repair it, etc, and then pay for it.... Just imagine what that took out of her day! Since that 1 week cost so damn much, perhaps it should have been broken down to what she spent hourly for the place, then gotten reimbursed for at least that amount of time that she clearly wasn't relaxed & enjoying a costly vacation.
Then being reduced to sleeping on an air mattress in lieu of actual furniture that was supposed to be there? Yep, should have gotten something for that too.

My jaw dropped when the defendant husband whispered 'the lease, the lease' and they were so excited and proud and peacocks to point out that there were 'no guarantees about the condition of the home". What the dummies don't realize is that in order for a house to be considered 'habitable', the tenants have to have access to a working refrigerator on the property
The fact they then claim she didn't give them enough time to respond, was also jaw dropping. They had all kinds of time to respond, they chose not to.
And lastly, when tenants rent your house for $5300, they are essentially paying at least a couple of months of your mortgage (in 2016) and rather than be dicks, they should have bent over backwards. The fact they wouldn't pay for the repair of their OWN refrigerator speaks volumes about their character or lack of. They are lying, scheming slum lords.

JJ says that the the defendants do not own the upstairs place so they are not responsible for that. The defendant knew that one sibling bought out the other two siblings and was doing renovation/construction work on and off upstairs. It was his responsibility to inform future renters that there is construction work going on upstairs from time to time and there may be some noise. This will allow the renters to decide whether they want to rent there or not. People renting a vacation place are looking for peace and quiet, not paying 5000 plus a week to listen to construction noise.
I wish JJ would have given back one night charges to the defendant for dealing with all the incovenience of dealing with broken fridge, texting landlord and being ignored by them, having to call the appliance repairman, cleaning the fridge after food got bad/ ice cream melted, missing single bed and was told to go buy an air mattress (take a trip to store and lug it back),dealing with the noise and disturbances from upstairs which probably led to not so good vacation. She definitely deserved a refund of atleast one day rental charge.

I don't know, I buy ultrapasteurized milk that can keep out the fridge for months if unopened, however I prefer the taste of cold milk, so you can find an unopened milk cartons in my fridge from time to time, I come home, put it in the fridge an open it once cold.
Some cold cuts are very spoilage resistant, after all they were initially invented as a method of meat preservation, an although modern versions are not as salty and fermented as the original recipes, many can stand an few hours at room temperature.

Imagine charging $5300, lying and saying you have more beds than you do, then telling the tenant to go buy an air mattress because you falsely advertised the property. Whether they reimburse the mattress or not, it is absolutely fucking ridiculous to tell someone you’re providing them a real bed with a real mattress then telling them just to buy an air mattress. With $5300, they had more than enough to go pick up a small mattress, but all they did was offer to reimburse an air mattress?

I clean for an airbnb and me and my boss are on top of concerns. If something is missing or not working we will handle it asap. I went to an airbnb in LA and their fridge was absolutely full and pack with previous guest groceries. We couldn't fit our groceries in the fridge at all. We don't want to eat any opened food. Why doesn't the housekeeper throw it out every cleaning? Then the owner wanted us to start the laundry, because we were 8 guest but we literally only used the house to sleep and snack because we were at disneyland, which did not say in the ad. We told them no. We would check out at 7am so housekeeper to clean and wash. When you have a 4 bedroom house please have extra comforters, sheets, and towels so if guest don't check out til the last hour you can go in and switch linens faster. Set up an extra pay with your boss to wash the dirty linens at your home. That's what we do in our airbnb.

Deplorable landlords, trying to imply that because the lease said it was an "as is" rental should excuse having a non-working refrigerator. What if the tenants arrived and the plumbing didn't work? Would they still expect to make $5K+ since it was as is? I think a GOOD property owner would also have offered a discount for annoyance of the construction, even if it was beyond their control and not legally their responsibility. Hopefully because of this show they never had another renter.
