- Replace upstream and downstream O2 sensors on the 2009 Honda Odyssey and check the sensor function with OBD reader/tester.
Save yourself $100s and do it yourself.
My first internet repair video. Constructive input greatly appreciated.
Did this today. At about the 19 and a half minute mark there is an explanation of how to disconnect the sensor from the bracket. After trying for over an hour I found this video, walked out and within 1 minute had the sensor off of the bracket. Took me about 10 minutes to remove and reinstall the new sensor. Getting the sensor off the bracket was the hardest part, thanks for explaining clearly how you did it.
I struggled trying to get the connector off. This video was a lifesaver. Thanks!
Glad to hear it was helpful. Share it with all your friends.
The Bob Ross of auto repair.. lol
Thanks for the great videos, very helpful!!
Now that's funny...My 21 year old son was just wearing his Bob Ross T-shirt yesterday. I'm so honored. Thanks for watching.
Just gotta tell ya, you were very explanatory on the 02 sensors. Easy to listen to & pretty thorough on everything I might need to know, even for a female to understand. I have a 2009 odyssey & am gonna subscribe for anything I might need to know Odyssey related in the future. Excuse the slang 🤣 & thank you 😊
Thank you so much. Sometimes my explanations are a little long-winded...But, I actually started this channel to document all the stuff around the house that I fix so my kids could have it once I'm gone. I appreciate everyone and never thought so many people would be interested in these videos...but they're actually for my kids. So, way too much talking!😁
Beautiful job. Thank you for taking the time to do it.
Very nice video Thank you.
Learn a lot from this video.
Thank you sir.
You're very welcome. Thanks for the support!
You're very welcome...Glad I could help out...keep the jack stands strong, and the gloves on...
Thank you very much for this video. I just did a Bank 1 Sensor 1 swap out and it was a piece of cake thanks to your informative video.
Thanks for the feedback, my friend. Glad I could help.
Thank you! looking for the 2003 honda odyssey videos replacing O2 sensors you mentioned...
Great video. Thank-you!! You saved me a lot of time. the rear (bank 1 sensor 1) was a pain. Thanks again.
Your welcome. I also replaced them on my 328i...they can be a pain to get to sometimes. The crows-foot O2 sensor socket seems to help.
This was a great video! I was able to do this at home and save a few bucks. Thank you!
Thank you for this video. You saved me a bunch of time and money. The only problem I had was squeezing my meat hooks and forearms in there to disconnect rear bank 1 s1. Without this video, I'd still be scratching my head trying to snap off the connector. Thank you!
Your welcome...You're very right...many of these new cars have very tight engine bays and are hard to get to many parts for the larger mit kinda guys.
thank you for this video, it really help me to my situation, you got a friend in puerto rico!
I'll stay at your place next time I'm there...
DrShankopotamus great!!
Appreciate the positive input...I figure I fix so many things around the house here, some of what I have done might help some people out.
Great video. Learned a lot. Thanks for taking the time to put something productive on UA-cam. If your going to continue filming under cars you might want to consider a snap on fisheye lens. Just a suggestion.
On the OBD reader I was comparing B1 to B2. The rear sensors (B1) were giving erratic readings not in line with the front sensors (B2) prior to replacing. The rear plugs (B1) were the ones that were damaged.
Great video. I have the same issue with my 2008 Odyssey. Please tell me which 02 Sensors. The autopart stores tell me there are four different 02 sensors. Thanks in advance.
Good video. Helped with the plug clips!
Does this apply to older odysseys? I have an 03'
Very helpful. Thank you.
Great video. seems insanely difficult to replace such and easy part. My old subaru was so simple. Horrible design by Honda. No reason the wire connection cant be lower. This is why garages hire skinny dudes. No way someone with large arms could do this job
Your very welcome. That's the whole reason I did it!
Hi my code for 2000 Odyssey is P1456 (evap system leak). I am getting horrendous gas mileage- around 11 miles/gallon. Could it be the o2 sensor gone bad?
Thanks a lot for the video! I would like to know the location of the bank 2 sensor 1 because I have to change it. Couldn't find proper diagram to help me. If you change it, in this video, can you please tell me the second or the minute where you change it?
Thanks.
wish this can be edited down to about 10 minutes. Hard to wait for completion. Thank you for your knowledge and experience though.
Sorry I just like to talk...some is more entertainment than info...but heck, it's all kinds of fun. Actually put this channel together so my kids could see how to fix stuff when I'm gone...
Pro tip: Use a 8mm open wrench (cut in half) to remove the O2 sensor clips on the O2 sensor wire.
A great suggestion it was...I'm in the market for a fisheye that will fit the camera...
hello - which portion of the video is the Sensor for Bank 2 Sensor 2? Thahks - was that at 10:50 mark?
What error code you had ? Which O 2 sensor you changed ? What bank ?
That front one is easier to unclip from above, just look for the green wire.
Firestone just quoted me $1000 to fix both O2 sensors on my 2009 Honda Odyssey. Hope between my father-in-law and I we can figure this out! The replacement parts are very reasonable on Amazon. I'm guessing the big charge is the labor - 3-4 hours is what they quoted me at Firestone...
I totally agree. There are way too many shops that just see dollar signs when a women shows up with a car...just ain't right. That's way too much IMHO.
I'll come with you I have the lighter
DrShankopotamus, For the Bank1 Sensor2 which you replaced in the first part of your video. How long of an socket extension did you use to tighten the sensor? As for the cable clips did you use a flat head screw drive to pop it out? Thanks,
Thank you for this video! It was quite helpful.
Everything went smoothly when swapping out the O2 sensor on bank 1. All except placing the plugs back onto metal bracket connected to the engine, where they are supposed to live.
At the moment the plug is flopping about the engine bay.
Does anyone know how to get the plugs clipped onto that piece?
Thank you for this video. It's very helpful. I notice that it's published 12/13/12 and the Odyssey only had 43K miles (approximately). Why did you do this job yourself? These emission system components are factory warranted for 8 years/80,000 miles by law. I'm still under the 8 years on mine, but at 134K, am responsible for the expense.
My warranty info for my 2009 Odyssey states an air-fuel sensor is only covered for 3 years/36,000 mile federal and 3/50,000 CA. Engine/powertrain Control module including Barometric Pressure sensor is 8 year/80,000 mile
+Adam Rude Thank you for responding. I am incorrect and you are partially correct. As you stated, Federal Emission warranty for the O2 sensors and most other emission compenents is 3 years/36,000 miles and 3/50K CA and several other states. (DrShankopotamus' vehicle was most likely under 3 years and was definitely under 50K miles.) Page 5 of the warranty booklet states:
"Honda may cover, on a case-by-case basis, some or all of the cost to repair a problem that is not covered by your vehicle's limited warranties. If your vehicle develops a problem you feel should be repaired by Honda at no cost, discuss it with your dealer. If you are not satisfied with your Honda dealer's decision, call or write Honda Automobile Customer Service (the address and telephone number are on the inside front cover)."
Dr. S's Odyssey was likely under warranty. If it was out of warranty, then it was just past warranty expiration. One would be hard pressed to find a dealer that would refuse this repair at no charge under a goodwill program.
My 2003 Odyssey surges when it reaches 2000 rpm, what would be the culprit?
I'm getting a trouble code of P0134. Says it's the Bank 1 Sensor 1 that's bad. I'm having trouble finding a diagram that shows where it's located. Did you replace that one in your video... if so, was it the first or second one you did?
Just replaced mine. It's located to the rear of the engine block. Once you remove the plastic cover from the engine block, feel around behind it until you grab a wire bundle. Follow those wires to the bank 1 sensor 1. (Verify you're looking at the right part by searching for an image of the sensor.) Although difficult to see, I replaced the sensor in about 15 minutes by feel. Needed to buy an O2 sensor socket to properly install. OEM part is NTK 24346 Oxygen Sensor. Really the only tricky part was disconnecting the wire bundle, and you can figure that out by looking at the new part to see where the clips are, then unclip by feel.
I also would want to know about the cost of parts. My dealer wants $300 for replacement of 'an O2' sensor. If the part is Around $80, $300 seams costly.
Did you test the o2 sensors after you pulled them out or just with the flow chart reading?
Got a bad sensor on the OBD-II and just went ahead and changed both for fun.
Where is upstream O2 sensor located? It's hard to tell from this video.
hi, you know what is the torque specs for a odyssey? mine its a 2007 touring. please. help . thanks
What is the torque specific??mine is 2006
my 06 exl ody w/240k miles got P0430 code few weeks ago. 02 sensors or cat were never changed. there are mainly hwy miles in tx, so i doubt it's a cat that needs to be replaced. ordered NTK downstream sensors 24255 & 24259. Now contemplating doing it myself vs outsourcing to mobile mechanic. what worries me off course is safety working under ody. my old plastic ramps that i almost never used are rated 2k lbs each, which is below what ody weights. you have what looks like solid/metal car ramps (from 3:00). where did you buy these? i can't find inexpensive metal ramps online (less than $100). there is one type sold on amazon around $60 that doesn't look solid piece.
Actually got my solid metal ramps from a local farm equipment auction for about $20, as I recall. I now have a BendPak 9k lb lift...the auto and truck work is so much easier!
hi. nice video. i have to replace a bank 1 sensor 1 and bank 2 sensor 1, im asuming that bank 1 is by the back of the van and bank 2 is by the front of the van and sensor 1 is by the front of the van and sensor 2 is by the back of the van. im right? please help me out thanks.
If you have a bad sensor, the others may go very soon too...I just pony up the funds and replace them all...
Doc, how much is did you spend on parts?
Do you know the torque setting for the sensors? Thanks
I think it's 44 Nm...but I'm not completely sure, I sold the Honda and the service manuals with it...best to check online service manual if I forgot to mention it in the video. Hope this helps. thanks for watching.
hey I have 2004 honda odyssey I'm having trouble to locate the 02 bank 1 (P0131) could u help me out thanks
Follow the exhaust from each side of the engine and you should find it...
There are 4-02 sensors?
As I recall...Yes. Pre-cat and post-cat on both banks.
Is this bank 1 or 2
Even the most expensive ones on RockAuto.com are running about $150...You should still be able to save a little chicken...
We're is bank 1 sensor 2
Whoa that rolling shutter on your cam is very annoying lol
lol 80 dollar o2 sensor? Is it a mercedes?
WASTING TO MUCH TIME BRO
Thanks for the reply. And yes, a lot of time talking and "messin" around. I started this channel for my kids so when I'm "dead and gone" they would have info how to fix stuff. I really never thought that many people would want to know this stuff, but I'm glad they do. Maybe i should put a few more references for skipping to important points in my videos.
