  • In this video I will put together a flight of my top 5 10 year old peated scotch. Taste them blind and let you know what bottle I like the best. The bottle I like most will move on to the next round and go up against the previous winners.

    Nice flight. For me the list would be like this 1. Port Charlotte 10, 2. Ledaig 10, 3. Springbank 10, 4. Ardbeg 10, 5. Talisker 10, 6. Laphroaig 10

I'm a little surprised that Ledaig landed where it did. I thought it would be higher. Let's see where the 18 lands when that flight hits the channel.

    Very nice battle Peter!
I’d favor with PC10 in this shootout. I always get peat ip front then a red wine kick in the mid pallet that’s great. Bruichladdich uses a lot of Bordeaux region casks so that is my guess for the wine cask.
I know this is a 10 year old battle but I would like to see Lagavulin 8, Laphroaig Quarter Cask and Kilchoman Machir Bay in there….I think those three would have given some strong competition.

I have to seriously rethink my next round. This was a lot of peat and they all started to meld together and get lost in all the peat. I'm considering cask strength peated bottles, but we will see. I only have the Lagavulin of the bottles you mentioned.

That was a tough flight to evaluate/rank Peter. I find that peated whisky tends to hang on my palate and influences/colors the next sample. I've had four out of the six in your flight and out of those my order is pretty much the same as yours. Thanks for the video.

I have drank these through the years, and I could never do it blind, and one sitting. Salute to being able to do that. Here is my ranking. Note I like peat so the weaker ones will be ranked lower. 1 Ardbeg 10, 2 PC 10, 3 Laphroaig 10, 4 Ledaig 10, 5 Talisker 10. An honorable mention would go to Benromach Peat Smoke 8. One I want to try. Glenturret 10 Peat Smoke.

@@whiskeyisajourney DAMN!!! I think if you were a fighter your nickname would be The Iron Palate. My Gosh!! cask strength peat back to back. Even with a palate cleanser I'd be done in 2. Also on camera I'd probably start dancing due to all that high ABV. WOW!! Looking forward to that. Man oh man. This is where I wish I lived closer. I've got this Ledaig 10 year CS from Signatory that was aged in Sherry Butts. Quite the peat and sherry spice. It would a great entrant to your CS lineup showdown.

That sounds good. My line up will be Ardnamurchan CS 5/23, Ardbeg Uigeadail (probably not cask strength), Kilkerran 8 Bourbon Cask Matured CS, Laphroaig 10 CS batch 15, and Springbank 12 CS. It will be out towards the end of February.

@@whiskeyisajourney oh wow! That is an impressive lineup. Ardnamurchan CS 523 just hit my area. I’ve got my eye on it and look forward to your review and the showdown. Some whisky tubers loved and disliked the 0222 version so I’m not sure as to whether or not to get 0523. It’s $80 before tax. Again that is a superb lineup. I’m enjoying Ardbeg Uggie now. I have an older Laphroaig CS that I want to compare as well. I’m going to be plastered tonight.

That's a Peat repeat Pete (I hope you don't mind me calling you Pete Peter) lol. As for me, except for SB 10, I have had all of these singularly although not in a flight at once. I would go with PC10, Ard 10, Led 10, Tal 10, Laph 10. Now if I could add in one of the Laph 10 CS releases, that may change my order of preference. I do have a bottle of SB10 finally but it has been a very long wait so I am going to defer cracking it open. I feel for you and agree with you, that's a lot of peat, smoke hitting your palate in a short order. Btw, I would put Ledaig (Lay-Cheg is how I pronounce it) much higher in that flight. Mild criticism from me based on the fact I have gone through 3 bottles of Ledaig 10 in last couple of years. Cheers to the peat Peter!

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  8 місяців тому +1

The Ledaig 10 on its own is really good. I was shocked it ranked so low in the blind. Of all the bottles in this flight I think it's the most delicate of them all. Maybe that was lost in all the big bold bottles in the flight. I am now rethinking my cask strength peated flight. It might be too much. Have you had the Ledaig 18? I think it's fantastic!

Enjoyed that one. It gets very complex picking an age statement, you did a great job. I did something similar the other day but allowed NAS, 10 and under into the mix and specified only Islay peat (so no Bruichladdich since they use Highland peat) and sherry cask. Lots of fun when you get Lore, Uigeadail and some Kilchoman in the mix!

@@whiskeyisajourney I don’t know how easy it is to get older bottles where you are, but if you can find Ardbeg Renaissance it is effectively 10 cask strength. A very interesting comparison, and though not relevant to a cask strength line up it is especially fun to compare to the current 10.

I haven't had Ledaig 10 in a long time. The finish was so awesome, sweet and complex, that I started buying any Indie bottle I could find.
So sad you experienced that "fall-off" here. It was that finish specifically that motivates this hobby for me. Perhaps a bit of water would have helped.
Ardbeg 10 is still the king of 10 yr peat and I don't see anything changing that.
Laph10, @ 43% is not a contender. We all need to try it at least once or twice, but I'll never buy a 2nd bottle. The CS and the Cairdeas, on the otherhand, are always on my shopping list. As long as they stay south of $100.
