Fun fact about shortcuts in Steam: The name of shortcuts will determine which community configs you get to see. naming it "Minecraft" will show a list of community configs. naming it "Minecraft: Java Edition" will show another list of community configs. I don't recommend changing the shortcut name after making a controller config. The config will still be there under the old name.

@@maboesanman yeah it was really helpful for openrct2 It has some pretty good layouts, though I changed the one I used to have some different functions I used more and added a turbo click which is actually really helpful for stuff like adding lots of track or path pieces
Elytra flight on switch is god awful. If you set the fps to 20 and render distance to 10 and turn off EVERYTHING(fancy leaves/bobbing/render clouds...) It kind of works.

As a Linux gamer, it's been amazing to see how PC gamers have embraced the steam deck. The steam deck has lead to a massive improvement in Linux gaming across the board and I can now play 90% of my games on Linux. I do still have a windows 10 partition for the games that simply don't run, or don't run well, but the deck has pushed a lot of Devs and / the community to fix these issues
@@TheLPCGAMING most people working on Linux gaming through the years have been volunteers. Only recently with valve moving in have any paid developers actually been working on it which has been responsible for massive improvements.

@@charlieking7600 this is just wrong. Valve is investing big bucks into Linux gaming because windows is an existential threat to their business model. If Microsoft ever got their shit together with Xbox / Windows integration they could kick valve off their turf so Linux is valve's backup plan. As a consequence, valve has made significant contributions to Linux gaming and the Linux desktop as a whole.

As someone who got to witness the post-fight mess. You have nothing to apologize for. Facts are PolyMC lead dev is hostile to the Rainbow People. Prism hard forked immediately and within hours it was like "nothing ever happened" but now they're called Prism. The updates that have come out for Prism and the support is absolutely fantastic. As far as we're concerned PolyMC is unalived and should stay that way.
You might say what he did was hijacking, despite him being the owner of the codebase, he locked out all other contributors and "froze" the source repository so no one could do anything but watch

They did not just have a falling out, the owner of the PolyMC project removed and banned all the other developers without warning or reason. He removed the project's code of conduct with a commit titled “Reclaim PolyMC from the leftoids” afterwards they continued to ban anyone with trans flags from the polyMC discord server. Hijack might not have been the right word but it was definitly a hostile takeover. Lenny (the guy that banned everyone else) was not even an active developer and all the actual active developers forked the project into Prism Launcher. Also PolyMC is currently breaking CurseForge's TOS by using an API key that they are not supposed to use.
2:40 The entirety of the steam deck is running on linux. SteamOS is what you call a distribution of Linux. The desktop environment you are reffering to is KDE Plasma. The "gaming mode" is basically just steam big screen mode.
The desktop environment is called "Plasma" and is developed by KDE. The "gaming mode" is not realy the big picture mode, it's more like a desktop environment based on it since the plasma session doesn't seem to run while using it. oh and yes, I uSe ArCh BtW.

Adding on to the gyro part, the sticks are touch sensitive and often in configurations I see that used as the gyro activation, so that's always an option.
I would also suggest swapping over the "Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad" controller preset in Steam over to "Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad" and then specifically setting the click action of the right trackpad to mouse left button down. That way you never have to fiddle with the touchscreen. You can also make it so gyro activates only on trigger pull down.
@@AntVenom its much more useful if your using flickstick aiming style. Not as useful in minecraft but can normalize the differences between controller players and M+KB in FPS games

Happy to see the steam deck gaining popularity, been looking at steam deck news since before it was out to the public and i had to wait nearly a year to get one and so far i have been literally using it as my main desktop... taking it around town every once in a while.

@@Wolphie Built on controller suppprt would be nice, but Java has so many keys and bindings. LB + RB to swap items in hands, the select button to open F3 menu maybe, etc. You'll still need a keyboard for other things
@@cqllel5186not true. The Steam Deck has support for 'touch menus' that can also have nested layouts. If you have enough patience, even modded playthroughs are totally viable.
As a steam deck and Linux fanatic, this video is well researched and I'm very happy with it. One thing I'd change is clarifying that gaming mode is also running the same version of Linux, the only change is the frontend. Other than that, amazing video.
My biggest concern about this is like playing Minecraft on a console with a console controller after I play this game with a keyboard and mouse for years now, but the MidnightControl and the Steamdeck basic input methods look different and therefore promising for a PC gamer/user. Very well workaround Ant, thank you!
Been playing Minecraft on the Deck since May, and it's been such a fantastic experience! It does kind of suck though how Controllable's mod creator doesn't seem interested in officially supporting it for the Deck, but it does work. Not great though however. But hey Midnight Controls is fantastic! Surprised you never mapped the right track pad to mouse movement, it makes menu navigation a breeze.
What I think would be the best would be a mod that adds integration with steam input itself When playing half life 2 and looking at the default control setup you can see that rather than binding stuff to virtual buttons and such you directly bind things to actions (eg. use, primary fire)
there is a mod called "controlify" that comes with the modpack Fabulously Optimized(which i do recommend, as it comes with everything you'll need). Though i can't test how well it works with the steam deck since i live in a country where the steam deck is way too expensive

2:39 Both modes use linux because that's the operating system. I think you were talking about the user interface. Game mode uses the Steam Deck UI and Desktop mode uses KDE Plasma as the desktop environment.
Heads up, you can actually pass arguments ("-l " in Steam's launch options) to Prism to tell it "hey I wanna launch this instance" So you could have a separate shortcut in Steam for EVERY instance you have!
For anyone else running into issues: 1. The -l is an lowercase L, for "launch" 2. If you renamed it, make sure to use the original name. (You can find it out if you mouseover the instance for a second, and it will show the Instance-ID at the end. For example for me it was 1.19.3) 3. you don't need brackets, -l 1.19.3 is fine 4. You can go into the Prism settings -> Minecraft and at the bottom you can check both "Miscellaneous" settings if you don't wanna see the prism launcher when starting this instance.
Just some information, the Steam Deck runs Linux in every "mode", that being the game mode or desktop mode, the only difference between the two is that game mode uses a custom interface made by valve and desktop mode uses KDE, both are linux under the hood, you are not switching operating systems when switching modes
Correction - both modes use linux. Game mode is just basically in a version of Steam Big Picture mode and desktop mode is outside of that, dealing with the desktop environment.
Gaming mode isn't really just a big picture of steam. It's a separate desktop environment with a custom window manager that easily allows to use gamescope(thing that upscales games). When you're switching to the gaming mode, you are basically replacing steam de with kde plasma, which is a popular desktop environment for desktops
It's interesting that in order to make the best console you just need to give it all features of full-fledged PC, so it's like jailbreaked out of the box

I bought her a steam deck OLED for her birthday and purchased both Minecraft games from Steam... not realizing they arent what we had played together previously. Now to jump through all these hoops! were you both on java or bedrock before? if you were playing the mobile or console version of the game and want to play with eachother, id suggest looking up the “minecraft bedrock launcher” on the steam deck discover store and then linking it to a Google Play account that owns the Android version of Minecraft

If you are going to play just one modpack, you can set it so it won't launch Prism at all and straight up go into Minecraft! Or just make multiple entries for each modpack you want. I personally don't know how to set it up exactly on the Deck, but I saw one of the Prism devs @Scrumplex comment here so if you want, you can ask him for help and maybe make a new pinned comment or quick additional video to show it!
If you want to do this, in the steam entry, where it says Target just add "-l [name]" after prismlauncher. eg. if your profile on Prism Launcher is called Fabric, you would add "-l Fabric". So the full text in the target field would be something like "prismlauncher -l Fabric" Also that's an L not an i

3:18 err wrong, The project was not hijacked and there are no "guilty" ones, the lead dev just decided he didn't like one of the decisions made (agree or disagree) so he removed everyone else from the project.
@@zigg7958 The main problem with MultiMC is that the owner is not interested in creating packages like flatpaks (valid), doesn't want to support platforms like M1 Mac (also valid) and doesn't want non-official builds using his servers for metadata (still valid). Again, all of that is valid, but it explains why people typically don't recommend the OG project.
It's honestly amazing to see Minecraft Java being played on a console, let alone this smoothly. The Steam Deck is truly revolutionary. Awesome video as always!
its the most pc like console ive ever seen. it is such a valve thing to do, create a console that is more like a pc than anything else. minecraft java edition has supported linux for years, so it makes sense that it works so well.
Minecraft (Prism Launcher) was literally the first non-Steam game I downloaded; I've been using it with MidngihtControlls, Iris shaders (Complementary Reimagined), inventory Tabs, and I've been checking out ItemSwapper, my controls are set up to use a Trackpad Virtual menu for the Hotbar, the up D-pad for WI Zoom, I use R4 for MouseTweaks item sorting, and L4 to toggle hold sneak on and off. I use my mod pack based on Fabulously Optimised, and with shaders, I get 40-50 fps and without, I definitely get more than 60 if I don't cap it.
While you can't exactly run Minecraft on a calculator, you absolutely can play it! Someone made a program called calc2key (it might only work for the ti-84+CE, I'm not entirely sure) which will cast your screen to the calculator and allow mouse and keyboard control from the calculator itself.
I don't have a Steam Deck, but I'm really glad I watched this video and learned about Prism. I've been using the official CurseForge launcher, and all the ads and popups really make it feel like adware and make me super uncomfy. After installing Prism and seeing that it not only allows you to install packs from CurseForge but also Technic and other places, it's definitely my go-to now. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
For people having problems. Before you even add Prism Launcher to steam you can already open it to create an instance of minecraft. While creating the instance select 1.20 as version and Quilt as modloader, this may help you, if the mods sodium and midnightcontrols didn't show up before. Press okay and the window should close again. Now go to "edit" on the instance and to "mods" --> "download mods" and pick modrinth to download them

Minecraft isn't on Linux, java is on everything including Linux. Because as the programmers say java is "write once, debug everywhere" ;) Fr tho java runs great on Linux, windoze not so much.
@@SuperTort0ise technically, but Minecraft depends on some native code (mostly windowing/input/OpenGL bindings) that need to be compiled for each target platform. You don't need to think about that normally because the java version just ships with the binaries for windows, macos and Linux.
Wow! I was always a bit sceptical about the Steam Deck but wanted to have one because it's a popular device with Linux on it out-of-the box. With this video I now know that I certainly want one. I hope I can get me one soon, it sounds like a lot of fun playing Minecraft on a handheld with acceptable framerates! (my best PC struggles when I do anything in Minecraft except standing in one spot)
Steamdeck is a must have device, the emulation, the customization of it are impeccable, the closest device to it can rival it will cost you around $1.5k. If your PC can do it, steamdeck can do it basically.

Update: My PC's graphics card died after ten or so years of working because it had to be "cooled" with the hot air that already cooled the processor... The PC is an Alienware X51, a terribly constructed computer.

I bought my steamdeck exclusively because it could run Minecraft, since that game is what I mainly play as someone who doesn't game much. I can say it's extremely weird watching you play the game using the joysticks, when using the touchpads to control movement and mouse is so much easier. Other than that, I've been playing Minecraft basically daily for several months now, and it's been a fantastic time. Highly recommend from me!
Gyroscope aiming is extremely underrated, I don’t understand why it isn’t an option in the mainstream shooters when it’s basically the answer to the aim assist debate.
Slightly random fact that doesn’t change anything but is still interesting to note: discover isn’t actually part of steamOS, it’s part of it’s desktop environment (KDE plasma), it’s not super important but if you happen to change desktop environments, you will have to use an app which comes with your desktop environment. I just thought it would be good to note.
Can’t wait for this. Definitely one of the things I’m looking forward to coming from being an exclusively Nintendo kid playing with shaders on my handheld is going to be glorious.
As a Linux User, I really like what valve does with the Steam Deck, since they are making Linux mainstream and showing that Gaming on Linux is possible. (If you play games that don't Natively support Linux that aren't Steam Deck Verified, you might need to do some tweaking, but otherwise, it just works, in most cases).
@@akeem2983 Agreed, Gaming on Linux is thanks to Valve amazing, we don't have to tweak that much anymore (at least for most Steam Games without anticheat).

The stuff I'm talking about is 2000-2008 and it's hell on windows too, just try to play og deadspace without patches, a lotta games work (generally not just Linux) but games back then are rough.
This video helped me a lot but not in the way you think. I use Linux as my daily operating system and used PolyMC to play Minecraft. I was real bummed when I heard that PolyMC was hijacked which meant I couldn't use it safely. Now that I know of the prism launcher I can play Minecraft mutch easier now. Thanks Ant!

This was pretty useful in 2024. I saw this video over a year ago, but steam deck wasn't available at the time here (Norway), got mine yesterday and used this guide, got it running pretty easily.
For anyone trying to get this to work on 1.20 Midnight controls and controllable are not available yet for this version. Instead you will need to make sure that you renamed the Prism Launcher to Minecraft: Java Edition and then hit the steam button while in the game, go to controller settings, and change the layout to a community layout ( I used the second one). This will get you 99% of the way but I personally had to make some further adjustments to the controller layout. I disabled gyro, and made the shoulder buttons (which are mapped to the scroll wheel) only activate on press down that way it does not scroll through the hotbar too quickly. Game runs amazing on the switch with Complimentary Unbound shaders and I managed 60 fps on average and dips only went to 40 fps. Also the game might not start out with the max quality, to fix this jut change the video settings to fullscreen inside of minecraft
I actually use midnight controls and steam input as I found there were quite a bit of things that midnight couldn’t do alone. Ps steam input can bind multiple things to one button and more with mode shifting, I highly recommend doing a deep dive on steam input as if you wanted to spend the time you could do a million things with it.
The important thing you shouldn't forget is that Steam Deck runs Linux, so you can do anything that you can do with a normal Linux PC. You can play non-Steam games like Minecraft: Java Edition if it has native Linux support. You can play non-Steam games like League of Legends even if it doesn't have native Linux support by Proton. You can install and use any app that has Linux support (Discord, Spotify, etc.) You can install and use game stores other than Steam itself like Epic, Rockstar Launcher, etc. by Lutris You can plug a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse and use it as a normal PC. You can tell people "I use Arch btw" Hell, you can even turn your Deck into a fucking server. And most importantly, you can brick your Deck by deleting the fucking kernel.
SteamOS, although Arch-based, is an immutable distro tho, meaning by default it's really hard to remove core system packages. Apps on Desktop Mode are handled through Flatpak, which containerises them so they don't mess with the system. Probably for the best, since casual users won't break their system installing dodgy packages, and advanced users can probably just install another distro if they want that control.
In my experience, controllable mod wasn't necessary. Steam input was enough, with every important key being binded to a comfortable enough layout. For less used keys/key combos, the left track pad as a quick menu was really convenient. Using the right track pad as mouse, it makes aiming and item management much easier.
The official launcher also has a bug in it;s Flatpak version (The version you get in Discover), where it cannot remember your login details so you must login to your Microsoft account each time the launcher opens ;-; I wish they fixed this issues so bady If you disable read-only mode and install the non-flatpak version of the official launcher, then it does work without issues! But since SteamOS updates are immutable, it *may* be removed when a large update takes place, but I have not tested that yet
@@kuppi8023 Apparently the new version of KWallet also fixes the issue... But Valve have not upgraded Plasma desktop for stable yet ;-; And Preview channel gives me more issues than it's worth to use
Of course it works? Since java edition is, well, written in java, the entire code is emulated, meaning it can run on anything that can run java code. And since linux and especially arch runs on low resources compared to windows, you could actually get better performance in minecraft by playing it on linux.
@@MixedVictor yeah nvidia's drivers sucked. Well I don't actually know their current state since I haven't actually looked into it or installed linux on bare metal ever since they made their driver open source. Like a few years ago I tried installing ubuntu on my old pc that has a 760 and it literally refused to work properly so I just stuck with using virtual machines.

i've messed with this on my deck, i highly. and i mean HIGHLY recommend setting up the right trackpad as a mouse, both controllable and midnight controls let you use mouse input at the same time as the controller and it makes moving the camera around a lot easier
i bought a 256GB Steam Deck about a month back and i can say its probably one of the best purchases i've ever made. it's basically just a hand-held PC. i have a few choice words for Valve when it comes to how they handle updating some of their most popular games that still make them tons of money 15 years later (it's been 7 years since TF2's last major content update despite the player count peaking earlier this year) but i think they're doing great work in the hardware department first with the Index and now the Steam Deck, and the work they've done for gaming on Linux has honestly been nothing short of monumental. if anyone is thinking about getting into PC gaming, honestly just get a Steam Deck and a Steam Deck Docking Station. even the cheapest Steam Deck option performs about as good as more expensive gaming set ups, and there's the added benefit of hand-held mode.
I'm pretty sure PolyMC wasn't hijacked. Something about the primary creator not liking that the devs he kicked off were putting in things about LGBT or something like that.
Yes, they wanted to change the rules of discord to give those ideological groups an advantage. so the project owner kicked them out and they started a massive smear campaign against PolyMC.
Yes bad and such massive changes! (Please, notice that I'm not serious with that first sentence.) Those changes were like adding a code of conduct :). Which is not a bad thing you know? It doesn't give any advantage to anyone. I'd suggest figuring out what happened before spreading false information. It is kinda funny (and sad ofc) that some people just take someones word as truth when they don't even know what happened. Direct quote from above: "I don't know exactly the changes I only know that it was bad so the owner kick them I was to late to see the chaos" You don't know what happened, but you know who's responsible and that it's bad.
It looks like this distro of linux might actually get more people interested in it. Hopefully even more games have linux support in the future (though Steam has already made most games compatible with Proton.)

Thanks to YT reccing this vid at end of one of your others, I now have Prism Launcher able to play my modpacks on my SteamDeck with a custom set of binds that work for me!
I've read the version of Java available on Linux has a better garbage collector then the one you'll find on Windows. This results in memory management being better on Linux and performance seeing a noticeable bump as a result.

I do still have a windows 10 partition for the games that simply don't run, or don't run well, but the deck has pushed a lot of Devs and / the community to fix these issues

@@charlieking7600 this is just wrong. Valve is investing big bucks into Linux gaming because windows is an existential threat to their business model. If Microsoft ever got their shit together with Xbox / Windows integration they could kick valve off their turf so Linux is valve's backup plan. As a consequence, valve has made significant contributions to Linux gaming and the Linux desktop as a whole.

They did not just have a falling out, the owner of the PolyMC project removed and banned all the other developers without warning or reason. He removed the project's code of conduct with a commit titled “Reclaim PolyMC from the leftoids” afterwards they continued to ban anyone with trans flags from the polyMC discord server. Hijack might not have been the right word but it was definitly a hostile takeover. Lenny (the guy that banned everyone else) was not even an active developer and all the actual active developers forked the project into Prism Launcher.
Also PolyMC is currently breaking CurseForge's TOS by using an API key that they are not supposed to use.

The desktop environment is called "Plasma" and is developed by KDE. The "gaming mode" is not realy the big picture mode, it's more like a desktop environment based on it since the plasma session doesn't seem to run while using it.

Adding on to the gyro part, the sticks are touch sensitive and often in configurations I see that used as the gyro activation, so that's always an option.
I'm not a fan of the sticks activating gyro, but that's certainly a valid option.
I would also suggest swapping over the "Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad" controller preset in Steam over to "Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad" and then specifically setting the click action of the right trackpad to mouse left button down. That way you never have to fiddle with the touchscreen. You can also make it so gyro activates only on trigger pull down.
@@AntVenom its much more useful if your using flickstick aiming style. Not as useful in minecraft but can normalize the differences between controller players and M+KB in FPS games

Happy to see the steam deck gaining popularity, been looking at steam deck news since before it was out to the public and i had to wait nearly a year to get one and so far i have been literally using it as my main desktop... taking it around town every once in a while.

As a steam deck and Linux fanatic, this video is well researched and I'm very happy with it. One thing I'd change is clarifying that gaming mode is also running the same version of Linux, the only change is the frontend. Other than that, amazing video.
My biggest concern about this is like playing Minecraft on a console with a console controller after I play this game with a keyboard and mouse for years now, but the MidnightControl and the Steamdeck basic input methods look different and therefore promising for a PC gamer/user. Very well workaround Ant, thank you!
Been playing Minecraft on the Deck since May, and it's been such a fantastic experience! It does kind of suck though how Controllable's mod creator doesn't seem interested in officially supporting it for the Deck, but it does work. Not great though however.
But hey Midnight Controls is fantastic! Surprised you never mapped the right track pad to mouse movement, it makes menu navigation a breeze.
What I think would be the best would be a mod that adds integration with steam input itself
When playing half life 2 and looking at the default control setup you can see that rather than binding stuff to virtual buttons and such you directly bind things to actions (eg. use, primary fire)

there is a mod called "controlify" that comes with the modpack Fabulously Optimized(which i do recommend, as it comes with everything you'll need). Though i can't test how well it works with the steam deck since i live in a country where the steam deck is way too expensive

Heads up, you can actually pass arguments ("-l " in Steam's launch options) to Prism to tell it "hey I wanna launch this instance"
So you could have a separate shortcut in Steam for EVERY instance you have!
For anyone else running into issues:
1. The -l is an lowercase L, for "launch"
2. If you renamed it, make sure to use the original name. (You can find it out if you mouseover the instance for a second, and it will show the Instance-ID at the end. For example for me it was 1.19.3)
3. you don't need brackets, -l 1.19.3 is fine
4. You can go into the Prism settings -> Minecraft and at the bottom you can check both "Miscellaneous" settings if you don't wanna see the prism launcher when starting this instance.
If you create a shortcut for instances in desktop mode, you can add them as non-steam games to launch straight into them.
Just some information, the Steam Deck runs Linux in every "mode", that being the game mode or desktop mode, the only difference between the two is that game mode uses a custom interface made by valve and desktop mode uses KDE, both are linux under the hood, you are not switching operating systems when switching modes
It's nice to see the KDE Plasma desktop environment embraced by the Steam Deck.
Correction - both modes use linux. Game mode is just basically in a version of Steam Big Picture mode and desktop mode is outside of that, dealing with the desktop environment.

Gaming mode isn't really just a big picture of steam. It's a separate desktop environment with a custom window manager that easily allows to use gamescope(thing that upscales games). When you're switching to the gaming mode, you are basically replacing steam de with kde plasma, which is a popular desktop environment for desktops

were you both on java or bedrock before? if you were playing the mobile or console version of the game and want to play with eachother, id suggest looking up the “minecraft bedrock launcher” on the steam deck discover store and then linking it to a Google Play account that owns the Android version of Minecraft

If you are going to play just one modpack, you can set it so it won't launch Prism at all and straight up go into Minecraft! Or just make multiple entries for each modpack you want. I personally don't know how to set it up exactly on the Deck, but I saw one of the Prism devs @Scrumplex comment here so if you want, you can ask him for help and maybe make a new pinned comment or quick additional video to show it!
If you want to do this, in the steam entry, where it says Target just add "-l [name]" after prismlauncher. eg. if your profile on Prism Launcher is called Fabric, you would add "-l Fabric".
So the full text in the target field would be something like "prismlauncher -l Fabric"

I grew up with legacy edition (Xbox 360), so when I tried Minecraft on steam deck it almost felt natural for me to use a controller.

3:18 err wrong, The project was not hijacked and there are no "guilty" ones, the lead dev just decided he didn't like one of the decisions made (agree or disagree) so he removed everyone else from the project.

its the most pc like console ive ever seen. it is such a valve thing to do, create a console that is more like a pc than anything else. minecraft java edition has supported linux for years, so it makes sense that it works so well.

Minecraft (Prism Launcher) was literally the first non-Steam game I downloaded; I've been using it with MidngihtControlls, Iris shaders (Complementary Reimagined), inventory Tabs, and I've been checking out ItemSwapper, my controls are set up to use a Trackpad Virtual menu for the Hotbar, the up D-pad for WI Zoom, I use R4 for MouseTweaks item sorting, and L4 to toggle hold sneak on and off. I use my mod pack based on Fabulously Optimised, and with shaders, I get 40-50 fps and without, I definitely get more than 60 if I don't cap it.

While you can't exactly run Minecraft on a calculator, you absolutely can play it! Someone made a program called calc2key (it might only work for the ti-84+CE, I'm not entirely sure) which will cast your screen to the calculator and allow mouse and keyboard control from the calculator itself.

I don't have a Steam Deck, but I'm really glad I watched this video and learned about Prism. I've been using the official CurseForge launcher, and all the ads and popups really make it feel like adware and make me super uncomfy. After installing Prism and seeing that it not only allows you to install packs from CurseForge but also Technic and other places, it's definitely my go-to now. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
For people having problems. Before you even add Prism Launcher to steam you can already open it to create an instance of minecraft. While creating the instance select 1.20 as version and Quilt as modloader, this may help you, if the mods sodium and midnightcontrols didn't show up before. Press okay and the window should close again. Now go to "edit" on the instance and to "mods" --> "download mods" and pick modrinth to download them

@@SuperTort0ise technically, but Minecraft depends on some native code (mostly windowing/input/OpenGL bindings) that need to be compiled for each target platform. You don't need to think about that normally because the java version just ships with the binaries for windows, macos and Linux.

I was always a bit sceptical about the Steam Deck but wanted to have one because it's a popular device with Linux on it out-of-the box.
With this video I now know that I certainly want one. I hope I can get me one soon, it sounds like a lot of fun playing Minecraft on a handheld with acceptable framerates! (my best PC struggles when I do anything in Minecraft except standing in one spot)
Steamdeck is a must have device, the emulation, the customization of it are impeccable, the closest device to it can rival it will cost you around $1.5k. If your PC can do it, steamdeck can do it basically.

Update: My PC's graphics card died after ten or so years of working because it had to be "cooled" with the hot air that already cooled the processor... The PC is an Alienware X51, a terribly constructed computer.

I bought my steamdeck exclusively because it could run Minecraft, since that game is what I mainly play as someone who doesn't game much. I can say it's extremely weird watching you play the game using the joysticks, when using the touchpads to control movement and mouse is so much easier. Other than that, I've been playing Minecraft basically daily for several months now, and it's been a fantastic time. Highly recommend from me!

Gyroscope aiming is extremely underrated, I don’t understand why it isn’t an option in the mainstream shooters when it’s basically the answer to the aim assist debate.

Slightly random fact that doesn’t change anything but is still interesting to note: discover isn’t actually part of steamOS, it’s part of it’s desktop environment (KDE plasma), it’s not super important but if you happen to change desktop environments, you will have to use an app which comes with your desktop environment. I just thought it would be good to note.

As a Linux User, I really like what valve does with the Steam Deck, since they are making Linux mainstream and showing that Gaming on Linux is possible. (If you play games that don't Natively support Linux that aren't Steam Deck Verified, you might need to do some tweaking, but otherwise, it just works, in most cases).
Gaming on Linux was always possible, but Valve made it so great that you can actually prefer Linux over Windows specifically for gaming

For anyone trying to get this to work on 1.20
Midnight controls and controllable are not available yet for this version. Instead you will need to make sure that you renamed the Prism Launcher to Minecraft: Java Edition and then hit the steam button while in the game, go to controller settings, and change the layout to a community layout ( I used the second one). This will get you 99% of the way but I personally had to make some further adjustments to the controller layout. I disabled gyro, and made the shoulder buttons (which are mapped to the scroll wheel) only activate on press down that way it does not scroll through the hotbar too quickly. Game runs amazing on the switch with Complimentary Unbound shaders and I managed 60 fps on average and dips only went to 40 fps. Also the game might not start out with the max quality, to fix this jut change the video settings to fullscreen inside of minecraft

I actually use midnight controls and steam input as I found there were quite a bit of things that midnight couldn’t do alone. Ps steam input can bind multiple things to one button and more with mode shifting, I highly recommend doing a deep dive on steam input as if you wanted to spend the time you could do a million things with it.
The important thing you shouldn't forget is that Steam Deck runs Linux, so you can do anything that you can do with a normal Linux PC.
You can play non-Steam games like Minecraft: Java Edition if it has native Linux support.
You can play non-Steam games like League of Legends even if it doesn't have native Linux support by Proton.
You can install and use any app that has Linux support (Discord, Spotify, etc.)
You can install and use game stores other than Steam itself like Epic, Rockstar Launcher, etc. by Lutris
You can plug a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse and use it as a normal PC.
You can tell people "I use Arch btw"
Hell, you can even turn your Deck into a fucking server.
And most importantly, you can brick your Deck by deleting the fucking kernel.
SteamOS, although Arch-based, is an immutable distro tho, meaning by default it's really hard to remove core system packages. Apps on Desktop Mode are handled through Flatpak, which containerises them so they don't mess with the system.
Probably for the best, since casual users won't break their system installing dodgy packages, and advanced users can probably just install another distro if they want that control.
In my experience, controllable mod wasn't necessary.
Steam input was enough, with every important key being binded to a comfortable enough layout.
For less used keys/key combos, the left track pad as a quick menu was really convenient.
Using the right track pad as mouse, it makes aiming and item management much easier.
PSA: the Minecraft Bedrock project for Linux is abandonware, the creator got fed up with people pirating the game, the newest version *does not* work.
The official launcher also has a bug in it;s Flatpak version (The version you get in Discover), where it cannot remember your login details so you must login to your Microsoft account each time the launcher opens ;-; I wish they fixed this issues so bady
If you disable read-only mode and install the non-flatpak version of the official launcher, then it does work without issues! But since SteamOS updates are immutable, it *may* be removed when a large update takes place, but I have not tested that yet
This is a problem with minecraft on arch when using a desktop environment other than gnome. You need to install gnome-keyring. That fixes the issue.

But Valve have not upgraded Plasma desktop for stable yet ;-; And Preview channel gives me more issues than it's worth to use

Of course it works? Since java edition is, well, written in java, the entire code is emulated, meaning it can run on anything that can run java code. And since linux and especially arch runs on low resources compared to windows, you could actually get better performance in minecraft by playing it on linux.
if you had an AMD GPU before they optimized OpenGL (I don't know the performance now), it literally ran better than Windows
@@MixedVictor yeah nvidia's drivers sucked. Well I don't actually know their current state since I haven't actually looked into it or installed linux on bare metal ever since they made their driver open source. Like a few years ago I tried installing ubuntu on my old pc that has a 760 and it literally refused to work properly so I just stuck with using virtual machines.
I use linux on my machines with Nvidia GPUs and they handle it perfectly with proprietary Nvidia drivers
Mod packs work good too, had a lot of fun playing Medieval MC with friends.

Just get the Fabulously optimized modpack on modrinth and turn on controller mode in the settings of modrinth and you're good to go

i've messed with this on my deck, i highly. and i mean HIGHLY recommend setting up the right trackpad as a mouse, both controllable and midnight controls let you use mouse input at the same time as the controller and it makes moving the camera around a lot easier

i bought a 256GB Steam Deck about a month back and i can say its probably one of the best purchases i've ever made. it's basically just a hand-held PC.
i have a few choice words for Valve when it comes to how they handle updating some of their most popular games that still make them tons of money 15 years later (it's been 7 years since TF2's last major content update despite the player count peaking earlier this year) but i think they're doing great work in the hardware department first with the Index and now the Steam Deck, and the work they've done for gaming on Linux has honestly been nothing short of monumental.
if anyone is thinking about getting into PC gaming, honestly just get a Steam Deck and a Steam Deck Docking Station. even the cheapest Steam Deck option performs about as good as more expensive gaming set ups, and there's the added benefit of hand-held mode.
I'm pretty sure PolyMC wasn't hijacked. Something about the primary creator not liking that the devs he kicked off were putting in things about LGBT or something like that.
Yes, they wanted to change the rules of discord to give those ideological groups an advantage. so the project owner kicked them out and they started a massive smear campaign against PolyMC.

Midnight controls wouldn't show up so instead I used a community control scheme for minecraft on steam and modified it slightly
i would recommend controlify as it has steamdeck support
SteamOS is apparently just Arch Linux with a few tweaks and programs added in.
Minecraft Java runs on most versions of Linux, including Arch.

I set 3 of the back buttons to sprint, crouch, and jump. It basically eliminates having to remove your finger from the right joystick.
Thanks to YT reccing this vid at end of one of your others, I now have Prism Launcher able to play my modpacks on my SteamDeck with a custom set of binds that work for me!
I think you should try the fabulously optimized modpack with forget me chunk.
Yep, I use that one too.. I noticed that one in Prism when setting it up and I get amazing FPS
that pack literally just installs the mods in this video and maybe a couple others and changes some configs probably, it's nothing special

I've read the version of Java available on Linux has a better garbage collector then the one you'll find on Windows. This results in memory management being better on Linux and performance seeing a noticeable bump as a result.
