- Shadow Veterans Affairs Minister Barnaby Joyce slams vandals who graffitied one of the memorials honouring Vietnam veterans on ANZAC Parade in Canberra.
“No, no, no. Not on this street, not on our memorial and whatever your issue is, you are not helping your cause,” Mr Joyce told Sky News Australia.
“I want a plan to deal with this. They were protecting our country and we can’t protect their memorial.”
Disgusting.

In my mind, that Memorial is not just to Honor those that were killed or wounded in Viet Nam., but to offer comfort to all the surviving Family members who bore the grief of a Father, a Son, a Brother, or a Cousin or Uncle ,that was never coming home again or came home maimed .Shame on the disgusting Mob that defaced it , and disrespected those Families and those Fallen or Wounded.

These brave ANZACs not only fought for their country, they also fought for my parent's place of birth, Greece. My grandmother spoke fondly of the Australian soldiers, she even managed to learn 'It's a long way to Tipperary' from them. These gentlemen of honor, good humor, and bravery defended my family and villages in the Peloponnese as if they were defending their own in Australia. They sacrificed everything, including their lives.
Today their graves dot the coastlines of the Peloponnese and Crete. Maintained, respected and revered. I've been there and read their names on the gravestones - some, were too young to fight, but they did with courage and good old, never say die Australian spirit, until they did.
I dare any person to bear witness to their sacrifice at these cemeteries and not be overwhelmed with emotion. The word 'solemn' must have been created for these new Greek Heroes who traveled 12,000km from Australia to fight for people they had never met as if they were fighting for their own mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daughters, and sons. They were Australia's finest.
After WW2, my grandmother was so moved and impressed with the backbone of these fine soldiers from the other side of the world that she packed a suitcase and sent her only child, my dad, to Australia at the age of 16.
She wanted him to live a better life in a country filled with hope and dreams. Dad has since died as have my mother and grandmother. They were proud Australian citizen. They patriotically called themselves Australians, honoring those who had fallen every ANZAC day, until they couldn't. My parents are survived by three generations of Australians. Their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. All of us, are proudly Australian. It was because of these ANZACs, and this is why we will never forget them.
The shame and ingratitude shown by 'others' who have been literally offered a lifeline to survive by Australia. Refugees from places worse than hell, and this is how they show their thanks? This is how they repay this wonderful and generous nation's sons and daughters who offered their lives so people like my mum and dad could have a better life. By desecrating the memory of these Heroes at the most solemn of shrines. It's a shameful, sad disgrace that can not, must not be tolerated.
Prime Minister, step up. Defend our fallen. You cannot remain silent any longer. We owe it to them, and us.

Agree, I'm over the graffiti or other vandalism on monuments, learn about history rather than hating it & being destructive that is really a feeble cry for help.

Because none of these veterans did played any part of the nukba of 47 and beyond. Like these war memorials are not even Israeli war memorials. If anything, if you are keen on desecrating war memorials that badly, go to Palestine and desecrate the IDF war memorials in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem or wherever these are. FFS.
