This is called character development. My man goes from a farmer to an Earl to the King. Conquers Frankia and in a few years, tries hanging from a tree. Imagine what you would think if you were just walking by and saw the greatest warrior in your nation's history committing suicide.
The writing of this show is incredible. This one scene ties in so many previous scenes from all seasons. When athlestan died Ragnar tells him he doesn't understand what a martyr is. When he hits the ground he gives a look like he reluctantly understands. He has only one son to follow him and only his life to give to avenge the settlement. Whether or not he realizes ivars potential before or during the journey debatable, bc he clearly didn't "choose" him over his brothers (as he tells ivar before he's taken away by aella later) if he tried to kill himself before asking him. But when he falls to the ground he realizes he must die with purpose. And only then the God's will allow him peace (which he seems to have found when he smiles as the snakes bite him)
Maybe it was Athelstan who saved Ragnar and not Odin? Maybe that's why there were many Crows there to persuade Ragnars beliefs. People forgot Ragnar is wearing the Gold Cross from Athelstan still.
I definitely have done this sadly and some odd reason the rope broke on me as well the gods will take you home to Valhalla when they choose I'm glad I'm still here...
So now I get it why he said to Floki that he will NOT see Valhalla Only the ones who die in Battle will get to Valhalla But Luckly Odins Crows saved him
“I don't believe in the Gods' existence. Man is the master of his own fate, not the Gods. The Gods are man's creation, to give answers that they are too afraid to give themselves.”
No, for some reason unknown to anyone, we are unable to leave this existence until it is our time. I should have died a half a 100 times throughout my lifetime
I haven't seen the show but I've watched quite a few videos of different scenes and if I understood right, Ragnar lived much by himself after he returned or preferred to being left alone.
Who knows what this scene means it could mean many things he could be broken man and he wants too take his life or maybe it’s a symbolising that he’s trying too replication Odin so he feels closer too the gods too seek Valhalla see his friends again or maybe he’s trying too prove the existence of the gods.
It could represent that he is destroying what is untrue within himself, old weaknesses and incorrect beliefs, to be reborn stronger, wiser and a more true iteration of himself.
He saw the tree and said to himself "aight what the heck at least I can try this" It didnt work and that gave him the assurance and strength to go to his sons one last time and to devise the plan for England and his eventual death.
The crows was controlled by Odin and the seer😶🌫️ rangnar tried to hang himself the seer said not today I said you die when the blind man see you fool not by suicide…I will speak no more
Can someone explain why he does this. Is it that he is truly tired and unhappy. Or is it to gain better knowledge. Last question, did he have to sacrifice himself or is it that he couldn't give up on Paris because it would mean all the shit he put everyone through was for nothing. Could he not just give up and go back to farming
Since Athelstan died he went downhill. Became more irrational and overall just a depressed man. The betrayal of Rollo in Frankia was just the final blow. No one can blame the man.
Ragnar- *tries to hang himself*
Odin- "Nice try kiddo!"
More like Odin : nice try kid I try hanging myself too
The gods aren't done with you yet, Ragnar Lothbrok.
Timo van Galen haha god of war
There's no Gods even he said so.
So who told his sons about his death?@@Death.is.our.Salvation
@@henryabang6732 His son Ivar when he return from England.
@@Death.is.our.SalvationOdin appeared to all of them. And it was confirmed that Ragnar went to Valhalla during Lagertha’s funeral.
Playing the whole Odin hanging from a tree thing hey. The raven on his shoulder was cool
This one scene encapsulates so much. It even manages to carry Ragnar's near-constant sense of dry humour. So well done.
The fall of Ragnar is so sad to see

Pretty spot on
Great
Those weren’t smiles but he was smiling before the bites
Meh. The writing takes a dip in quality after season 4. Waaaay too much infighting over who controls Kattegat.
this show is badass
Suicide is badass!

Such a complex character. His end was sad but epic. This was world class acting.
This was the saddest and funniest shit at the same time that I've watched.
What's funny about a man taking his own life..
@@jaymoeayit Lighten up, son.
By that Moment he was already so muchbroken
He was completely broken after Athelstan, at this point he was beyond repair.

This is proof that odin wants Ragnar in valhalla
Parallels to Odin
Odin hung himself on a branch of Yggdrasil in search of greater knowledge.
Maybe it was Athelstan who saved Ragnar and not Odin? Maybe that's why there were many Crows there to persuade Ragnars beliefs. People forgot Ragnar is wearing the Gold Cross from Athelstan still.
Those are Ravens, often said to be tied to Odin and the gods.
those are well trained crows
Ravens. They're Odin's ravens.
ravens. . .right. . . still, well trained actors.
Too right good man too right.
better actors than some of the characters in the show
And the cameraman no one sees him and he's immortal
This scene caught me off guard!!
Thank god crows
Muja MT it was Odin
God's not God.
Ravens
Ragnar actually died by suicide by giving up himself to king Aelle
Him and Kratos share something in common.
Cold Flame lowkey he could play Kratos
Bald head and really big beard? o.O
Karthik S And went into exile
Joseph Stalin and the fact the gods wouldn’t let them take their own lives
When I first saw this scene I couldn’t help but laugh when he fell

Luckily it did break brother, don't take yourself out of this world, the world will take you out when it's ready. God bless.
Hey, when you’re at the bottom, there’s no where to go but up
So now I get it why he said to Floki that he will NOT see Valhalla
Only the ones who die in Battle will get to Valhalla
But Luckly Odins Crows saved him
No he meant that he no longer believed that the gods existed. So when he died he would never see them again because there was no Valhalla.
Fro Ing idiots and also people who are forced to join the army without ever really intending to hurt anyone
If you die with courage you will be there. Well Odin will decide that

This was so sad. You can see how much pain Ragnar is in. Mentally. He lost his whole life. His wife and baby girl and auslag took his life away.
He's not trying to suicide... never mind.

He left Kattegate to go see Lagertha.
+dreyrugr Before that.. from what I understand he was gone for almost 10 years?
He went into self imposed exile after his defeat in Paris and essentially abdicated his throne.
I think that we will know that in the second half of the season 5... feel that a big surprise coming soon :)
