4 day shooting but I let's not forget that there was 6 weeks of post production. There is a lot of rotoscoping, green screen, 3d modeling in the video. Usually the shooting is the fast step of a any film with many FX.
This clip should be required viewing in schools. 9 years later, there's *still* a bunch of people who get completely fooled by *extremely rudimentary* (by today's standards) motion tracking effects and go "OMG THIS IS TOTALLY SUPERNATURAL FOOTAGE OF GHOSTS OR ALIENS or somewhatevershit". I learned an extremely important lesson when seeing this clip: If something looks like it could be done with computers, *it totally can be done with computers.*
We used Aftereffects for all the compositing, photoshop for some of the details/obstacles etc. and Maya for the 3D Landing Craft and a couple of 3D beach obstacles.
I live just near omaha Beach, and i'll never see this beach in the same way now! Congratulations, it's a really stupefing work you made here! amazing team, want to see the movie...
to have the vision and to know what shots you need for the final end product to be like that is amazing. true eye for video production there... awesome
This is wonderful. For years, movies have been created by committee; directors, producers, and at the back of it all the money men. Now, movies can truly be made by a single person, meaning that we see true creative visions and not the product of focus groups and bull sessions.
That was great, nice work w/ the stacking/layering effects, and the dark, bleak, unforgiving shade given in the final product. I'm VERY impressed what you did.
wow, that explains a lot. here I was thinking that most of a movies budget went into these huge battle scenes filled with extras, props, and timed explosives lol. I always wondered how they were able to get away with putting peoples lives in danger filming these scenes
+Lotak Smith That's not in every case. This video is impressive no doubt. But it was for a British TV segment. If you go back and watch you'll notice the camera angles are mostly stationary on a tripod. Easier to edit in post production. Then again this show aired in like 2005 so technology has expanded. If you look at Saving Private Ryan a lot of the camera angles used on the beach were from the view of Tom Hank's character. And you'll see it's next to him dozens of extras. You can't fake that with green screen and two actors. But I still like watching this video because it shows what you CAN get away with technology. It's pretty awesome too.
The beach really looks much larger from those angles with nothing on it. I can't even begin to imagine what that must have been like to try to run across.
Totally wicked! If it was with one person, this could be a recruiter for the US's Army of one *chuckle*. Seriously though, that is amazing planning and serious editing work guys, keep it up!
The limited money for this came from the British TV watching public who have to pay a TV Licence that pays for our Public broadcaster aka the BBC. The program it was made for 'Timewatch' which is one of the best history programmes of its type running and thus this footage was for educational use. Quality work by the way Colin, keep it up.
I still remember this is the first video I watched on UA-cam!
As an aspiring compositing hobbyist I found this video nothing short of awe inspiring. Excellent work!

TobiAnimados ,
One days shooting and many editing
