I actually didn't mind Metaknight being more of a villain in Metaknight's Revenge. Main reason is, it enforced the idea that if Metaknight deems it, he can truly be a threat if he chooses to take that path. In a way, he's still trying to save Dream Land with honorable intentions (wanting to keep everyone from being lazy), but the way he does it contradicts with Kirby's laissez-faire, relaxed mentality on things, which further shows the differences between the two of them. It's a battle of differing ideologies and at the end, Kirby is the victor and Metaknight realizes the error of his ways since he never goes to that length of villainy again, preferring to seek out battles to test his skills. I also didn't mind the Dark Metaknight battle in Kirby and the Amazing Mirror because when you first fight Dark Metaknight (thinking that he's the original Metaknight), you immediately *know* something is wrong when he doesn't give you a sword for the first battle. If you've followed all of the Kirby games up until that point, it's a great minor plot point to that game's story to tell you that the Metaknight you're facing is *not* the one you've known all of this time.

Meta Knight is a sort of mentor figure in the anime, and if you look closely, he is the same species as Kirby. Also, Meta Knight is usually the second to last boss. Therefore, Meta Knight is trying to prepare Kirby for the coming conflict by testing him.

I guess HAL simply doesn’t see any good reason for Meta Knight himself to fight Kirby anymore outside of a simple spar or something. They’re too friendly these days, which is kinda cute. Even in Star Allies, if you jump on the platform he stands on, he’ll simply get annoyed and fight you anyway, kicking away the sword planted in the ground. He is under control of the Jamba heart after all. I love the detail that all the other knights don’t share his honourable nature, a straight up sword fight is awesome, but I agree, it would be cool to have another straight up battle with Meta Knight with only Kirby.

What you fail to realize is that during the NOT Meta Knight fights (ie: Dark Meta Knight, Mecha Knight, etc.), the whole point is that who you’re fighting is NOT Meta Knight. These bosses use untraditional tactics that Meta Knight would never use because it’s either a clone or a possessed version. Again, NOT Meta Knight.

Would you say that Meta Knight giving you a sword in "Star Allies" is because he's not really "posessed" by the Jamba heart? I always thought they just filled people with hate and his pause description says that the heart awoke his obsession with being the strongest.

@@matti.8465 I think even while possessed he still fights the control of the Jamba heart. He gives you a fighting chance which is always befitting of a knight. It feels weird to open a video and hear about how Dedede/Meta Knight are villains.
Dedede was a antagonist for a single game (and whenever that story gets retold/re-adapted for spin offs) and Meta Knight just flat out was never "evil". His entire goal in Revenge was to teach Pop Star that it shouldn't be so lazy and should be able to protect itself. After he got stopped he kinda chilled out and just focused on self improvement and playing the hero.
Both of them are pretty great guys after they got beat up. (Though Dedede still has his bombastic problem ego)
E: Like part of me wonders that you do know there's a ongoing plot throughout the entire Kirby series right? It might help your perspective on the characters. It's not a case of Mario where Bowser is always the bad guy- characters learn in Kirby and change. Magolor won't show up as a boss again for no real reason because he's too busy building theme parks for the crew. Meta Knight won't fight Kirby when a threats going down unless he's brainwashed or a imposter is copying him because he's too busy being a flat hero these days. Same with Dedede who's still jealous about Kirby (and Battle Royale played at his perceived rivarly) but he's not about to try to take over the world or something dastardly for no reason.

idk man, i don't really think i can agree with this.
First of all, i'm perfectly fine with Meta Knight being a lot more friendly to Kirby over time, and using replacements/supplements gives ways to still make him work as a boss or give an actual villain more spotlight.
Second of all, i really can't agree with the the AM and PR problems.
:Amazing Mirror. A unusual fight could be considered foreshadowing for the after events.
:Planet Robobot. By making the fight a lot less "fair" and bringing up a bunch of new tricks, it really shows just what Haltmann Works did to Meta Knight and is a creative way of keeping the fight fresh compared to your other battles with him.
This video was still enjoyable tho, don't get me wrong.

I half agree with you half not. From the story perspective amazing mirror and planet robobot make sense. Like you said in amazing mirror you fight dark meta knight which is supposed to contrast normal meta knight by not being fair in a duel. In planet robobot meta knight tried to protect dreamland and got turned into a robot because he failed. That game focuses on changing up certain fights- for example typical whispy woods is replaced with robot version and dedede is replaced with clones, so going with the theme meta knight had to have a diffrent fight focused on him being a robot now. In star allies bosses have their typical version and then get powered up halfway through like dedede getting buff after certain level. I think it is great fight returns to more of his older design, but I feel like in those circumstances diffrences in fights were justified.

Your examples were kind of invalid. The Amazing Mirror and Planet Robobot fights are the closest thing HAL could fit into their respective stories, whereas your preferred Meta Knight battles don't have the same restrictions.
In short, you cannot compare these fights in the way you attempted to in the video. The Dark and Mecha fights aren't meant to be replacements, but they are all HAL could do given the storyline.

And it’s described that when the Jamba Heart possessed him, it said that all sense of honor has left him. So really, there is a reason for each MK boss fight that differentiates from the og. Star Allies celebrated the 25th anniversary and it made sense to bring back the nostalgic og fight

If there's no question I feel needs to be brought to the conversation, it's this: Why does Galacta Knight's story function work when Dark Meta and Mecha Knights don't? After all, Dark Meta Knight not offering a fair fight with the sword is done for obvious reasons- it's the Dark form of Meta Knight from the Mirror World, a character who is the exact opposite of Meta Knight proper. And likewise, Mecha Knight isn't exactly Meta Knight proper, but rather, a mechanized Meta Knight brainwashed into working for Haltmann, a character essentially kidnapped and made a puppet for Haltmann to show how cruel they are in their bid to mechanize all of Pop Star. Kinda like how Meta Knight is with Yin Yarn in Epic Yarn, where Meta Knight, like Dedede in that game, is kidnapped, brought to Patch Land, and the yarn swords brainwash him and make Meta Knight a literal puppet (though literal puppet's more accurate for Dedede, but still).
And really, I feel like Hal's use of Meta Nots is purposeful because of how the character has evolved to be... Well, an ally, much like King Dedede. Both Dedede and Meta Knight rarely take on antagonistic roles anymore, with Meta Knight always having felt like a mentor to Kirby who teaches through fights to test the student on his best days and... Tries to take over Dream Land with good intentions on his worst. The whole purpose of Meta Knight originally was the ambiguity of if Meta Knight was an ally or an enemy, giving you power ups in a few levels and then sending his own army, the Meta Knights, after Kirby in others, ultimately leading to that fight where Meta Knight gives out a sword for a fair fight. And then Super Star basically marked the end of Meta Knight's role as an antagonist of any kind, where Meta Knight tries to use military force to overthrow Dream Land's lazy rulership by King Dedede, only for Kirby to need to stop Meta Knight to show how Meta Knight's taking things too far.
Similarly, Dedede has stopped being the final boss and main bad guy for a long while now, with Dedede becoming a rival on his worst days and one of Kirby's friends who just gets brainwashed to fight Kirby on his okay days to just flat out being a friend on his good days. Like in Kirby Triple Deluxe, the whole point of the plot is Kirby has to rescue a kidnapped Dedede. Which, sure, doesn't show how Dedede has evolved, until you free Dedede and Sectonia goes bonkers. At that point, without a second thought, Dedede is helping Kirby get to Sectonia to stop her planetary takeover. Or Kirby's Return to Dreamland, where Dedede's just chasing Kirby for a slice of cake, essentially having fun while Meta Knight just relaxes with a book (another point towards how Meta Knight mellowed out after Super Star) and when Magalor is in need of help, Dedede offers to help without any hesitation, a stark contrast to reluctant Dedede joining Kirby in Kirby 64.
But all of this is to talk on the characters' motivations and characterizations in recent games. For boss fights, I can't argue with you on how they mechanically work and how Meta Knight offering a sword to Kirby for a fair fight is a more interesting and challenging fight design. I just like the Kirby franchise a lot, so I had to join the discussion.

In Star Allies you can still skip picking up the sword Meta Knight offers, and HAL added a special animation for it like they were expecting you to skip it (not surprising, considering the game's structure and it's emphasis on dream friends which play totally different from Kirby).
Also Dark Meta Knight was probably the worst example you could ever possibly use since he was specifically designed to be a foil to Meta Knight with how ruthless he is (much like Galacta Knight and Morpho Knight, who are pretty redundant).
And in Planet Robobot Meta Knight has been taken over machines and is fighting against his will, so he's unable to offer you a sword like he'd probably like to. (It's honestly pretty weird that Meta Knight would still offer you a sword in Star Allies considering he's been possessed)
The best example you could have picked is the Meta Knight fight in Squeak Squad, which is rather infamous among most Kirby fans because he doesn't offer a sword despite having no real reason to do so, and Dedede's theme plays instead.
Also shouldn't you have shown Brawl gameplay when talking about overpoweredness? It's a small detail, but combined with everything else it feels you didn't put much effort into this video.

    Like, There's...

    Sword Knight (also a Helper)
Dark Meta Knight (Evil inter-dimensional counter-part to Meta Knight that's somehow a Dream Friend?)
The Meta-Knights (4 warriors that serve Meta Knight and also feel like the primary inspiration for the sections in Star Allies where you beat up a bunch of randomly spawning enemies)
Galacta Knight (Meta Knights rival that was deemed so powerful by the ancients to the point of banishing him from their world and casting him into another dimension)
Yarn Meta Knight (Meta Knight, but he's made of yarn and under the control of Yin-Yarn)
Mecha Knight (Meta Knight under robotic hypnotism)
Mecha Knight + (Upgraded version of Mecha Knight)
Stock Mecha Knight (A robot made from the blueprints of the original Mecha Knight model)
Morpho Knight (Galacta Knight fused with a Magic Butterfly that appears in literally every Kirby game)
Parallel Meta Knight (Evil inter-dimensional counter-part to Meta Knight that's not from the Mirror World but rather the 8th level of Return to Dream Land)
Morpho Knight EX (Morpho Knight, but now he has mastered using his new abilities)
If you split up the Meta Knights into 4 separate characters, that's 15 characters in the Kirby series with the word 'Knight' in their name. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think any other character in the entire world of gaming has anywhere close to that many variants of themselves (aside from maybe the Mario brothers and toad but that's really it honestly).

I know that he actually articulated his point well with the meta knight boss fight but in the end, it's still just a not to the original game and is bogged by having 3 npcs making the boss fight piss easy. Star Allies had a lot of missing potential. Amazing co-op game. Meh platformer overall. It had new ideas here and there but it just can't compare to Return to dreamland or the 3ds games for me. If the Allies thing was a side mode with some extra segments and the game a single player I believe the game would be a lot better as a complete package. Those are my 2 cents as a kirby fanatic. I don't like Nintendo but I love their 1st party studio's and the love they put into the ip's they created and still handle. Hal and IS are some of them and I respect their right to experiment I just feel Allies was a nice but ultimately failed experiment. If they take what they did correctly in this one and infuse it with the return to dreamland formula and level design and I swear to god that could be the ULTIMATe Kirby game and I hope those 2019 kirby game leaks were real because the potential of a new game if they step up their games are immense.

Return to Dreamland and Super Star, along with other Kirby games that support co-op, don't have level design that really "supports" it. They wind up being cramped and dull in co-op, with Kirby usually doing everything. Star Allies' focus on co-op, along with the co-operative elements, actually allowed it to be a good co-op experience.
You can not like the co-op focus all you want, but it's a massive step up from other Kirby games that supported co-op. And if you bought the game expecting a single-player experience in the main story after the advertising leaned HEAVILY on the co-op, that's honestly your problem

gonna have to disagree with you here, i thought the star allies meta knight fight was one of the weakest we've seen yet.
Whilst most bosses' attacks are slow and easily telegraphed, meta knight stands out by moving around quickly, and atacking with very little start-up, similar to your own moveset (he can even guard against your attacks). It makes his fights feel a lot more tense, as your entire gameplan is changed; you can't just wait for him to show an attack animation, walk out of the way of his attack, and then go crazy on him when he's stuck in 5 years of endlag because he doesn't have those easy grace periods. Instead you treat him as an equal, desparately trying to figure out the spacing on his attacks and when he's most likely to try and block, all whilst he actually attacks (seemingly) at random.
Whilst some portions of his star allies fight does feature him attacking at random, and he does still have the ability to block, he's a *lot* slower. Not so much in the movement speed department (though he has seen better days), but in his attacks. Even his basic three-hit combo has more than half a second of start-up, making it very easy to see it, then jump out of the way long before meta knight swings his sword. Rather than quickly guarding to protect himself at the end of the attack, he just sits there for a moment, allowing you to easily land another attack or two in, before he goes back to walking menacingly.
This is further exemplified in the second phase of the fight where he splits into 2 or 4, as each of the individual knights attack much less frequently, giving you even more opportunity to just destroy him like you would to a normal boss. And his rock attack is a joke, you'd have to try to get hit by it. (Amusingly, the hardest thing in this fight is keeping track of yourself.)
Even the "use sword for a fair fight" concept is lost here, as when your sword attacks clank, meta knight is put into a recoil animation but you get to act out instantly, putting meta knight at a great disadvantage (and as many comments point out, you don't have to pick up the sword).
This even extends to the morpho knight fight to some extent, as he is similarly sluggish and his giant sword attacks are also very easy to dodge (once you realise they have a hitbox on startup). The main thing morpho has over meta is his ability to teleport almost immediately after attacking, similar to how some of the older meta knight fights would guard straight after an attack.
ok this is a lot longer than i intended it to be, so quick summary: meta knight is slow in star allies and feels a lot more like a regular boss fight, which kinda sucks. Splitting only made it worse.
insert 1 2 oatmeal joke here

I think there's a similar issue that the one with having Dedede as a boss. You can't really call Meta Knight an anti-hero anymore, he had bad intentions of taking over Dreamland once and in "Nightmare in Dreamland" you can argue he's helping Dedede because he too wants to protect Dreamland from Nightmare.
So, they need to do things like create evil version or get him possesed in order to keep showing Meta Knight as a boss, because there's no reason for him to want Kirby dead at this point, they are friends. Also, the lack of fairness could be due to Meta Knight not really being Meta Knight on those fights. Dark MK is a more evil and relentless version or the knight who obviously doesn't care for a fair fight and Mecha Knight is a modification to make him stronger, he has not enough free will to want to fight fairly.
In Star Allies i would say it's justified because he's never controlled. The Jamba hearts kind of bring the hatred in people's hearts, bring this why Dedede was stealing food again and Meta Knight wanted to fight you (In fact, the pause description said something along the lines that the Jamba heart awoke his old desire for power) his personality remains, so he still gives you a sword.

Honestly the way I see things Meta Knight hasn’t been messed up yet. Every fight with him has been handled appropriately. In Adventure he tested you to see if you were strong enough to defeat Nightmare should the time come. In Meta Knight’s Revenge he gives you a sword because he’s still honorable despite trying to take over Dream Land due to its lazy life style. Then he disappears and misses the entire Dark Matter saga because he’s busy repairing the Halberd. He only shows up for Amazing Mirror because repairs are close to being finished, and some crazy stuff’s going on up there and he feels he needs to check it out. Then the Dark Meta Knight fight happens and all that stuff goes down he doesn’t offer you a sword because that’s not him, it’s a doppelgänger with no honor. Then in Squeak Squad he doesn’t offer you a fair fight because he’s not trying to play fair, he’s trying to stop you from making a huge mistake and releasing Dark Nebula. Also it’s really cool that Halberd resurfaces after all this time I always loved that attention to detail in the Kirby series. With Galacta Knight, he’s ruthless, he’s not honorable like MK. In Epic Yarn he’s under someone else’s control, and with the Mecha Knight fight he’s brainwashed. It’s only finally is Star Allies that even with the Dark Heart possessing him he’s really only having his worst aspects heightened, like with Dedede. But even then he still manages to retain enough sense of self to offer you a fair fight, only losing control during the second half. Meta Knight’s awesome hehe

I think the reason for MK's lack of typical battles is due to character development. He no longer has a reason to fight Kirby because they're actually friends. He doesn't need to keep things from him or test him because he already knows that Kirby's more than capable of handling things himself. In my opinion, bringing Meta Knight back to his anti-hero status would feel out of character.
King Dedede is the same way. Calling him the series antagonist is just wrong at this point. He's cemented as a hero and friend to Kirby; sometimes one can consider him the damsel in distress seeing as he's more often than not possessed against his will.

You do a really great job illustrating Meta Knight's fights through time and showing proper examples. While I do ultimately disagree with your points - as other have pointed out with Dark Meta Knight and Mecha Knight being more corruptions of the Meta Knight concept rather than replacements and feeding more into the lore of the series growing ever darker - I do really appreciate your illustration of the fight in Star Allies and how it's a great reflection of the game's themes. I do wish that it was somehow limited to a 1v1 to start with, though I understand that going against the theme of multiplayer, as just damn do bosses die WAY too fast in that game.
Still, while I wouldn't call Star Allies "saving" Meta Knight, I would, at least, say that it creates a nice twist on the traditional Meta Knight formula (twice!), which seemed to be the aim with how scaled-down the first two worlds of Star Allies were to its contemporaries and how it's sort of become a big send-off to this current phase of Kirby games. It'll be interesting to see how MK's handled in the future, or if the 'duel' style with him will come back. But hey, at least it's better than whatever they do with him in Smash Bros!
Also nah man, Dedede's totally a rival. He's like the Gary Oak of competitive eating.

  • @DaNintendude
    @DaNintendude 5 років тому +1

As I stated on your Dedede video, I think Meta Knight is at his worst in Squeak Squad. Instead of testing you, like he did in Kirby's Adventure, he straight up just fights you. This is the only time in the main series that a not-possessed or controlled Meta Knight doesn't offer you a sword. He doesn't inform Kirby of the danger inside the box. He just runs, and then fights.
I personally saw Revenge of Meta Knight as another test for Kirby. He probably knew from the beginning that Kirby would hunt him down. This is just speculation, but very recently, I came up with the idea that the reason Meta Knight tries to take over, is because of the dark threats that are starting to show their faces on Popstar. He wants to train the denizens of Dreamland into an army to protect it. By the end, he realizes that Kirby truly is something else, and that Dreamland will be safe with just him and his friends to protect it. He honors that Kirby is stronger than him, and from then on, he acts mainly as a friend.
It is because of this notion that Meta Knight has been mainly controlled, possessed, or replaced in recent titles. Meta Knight has no reason to fight Kirby. Star Allies was the perfect time to bring back his honor, as Jamba hearts don't completely control an individual, they just seem to strengthen their "evil" qualities. Dedede becomes gluttonous, calling back to glutton being the reason he stole the food in Kirby's Dream Land. Meta Knight's strength and ego takes over him. Offering the sword is the one bit of honor he has left in his corrupted being.
I feel like this is the last time we will see an Honorable Meta Knight fight for awhile. If he is a boss at all, he will likely be controlled or possessed.

Some people seem to misunderstand the character. He was /never/ an antihero, but rather only fought Kirby when he saw fit or was made to (one if the only times he ever did bad was with the Halberd). Throughout all of the Star Allies fight, he is corrupted due to the dark hearts, his description even saying it obscured his wishes for a fair match. Robobot does do well to shirk fairness itself, Meta having no choice in his movements.

    Side tangent:
A lot of people mention in Amazing Mirror that you immediately know something is up with the ? ? ? fight because you don't get a sword ; it's uncharacteristic.
However, if you pay attention to the story, you know that Meta Knight saw Dark Mind's threat to be so great that he tried to deal with it himself, only to fail.
Throughout the game, two characters recurringly help Kirby, as neither could beat Dark Mind on their own: Meta Knight and Dark Kirby.
The game has an air of cooperation as an important motif.
You even need the Kirbys, he having been split in four, to work together to get 100% completion.
If Meta Knight were to show up as a boss, it wouldn't fit with his motivations and the game's motif as cleanly as normal.
But even all this is aside to one thing:
I mentioned that Meta Knight assists Kirby throughout the game.
He doesn't just do this in the Dark Mind multi-stage fight.
The Magic ability in Amazing Mirror wasn't fleshed out until the next game, Squeak Squad. In AM, it's a single-use roulette wheel.
You can get varying levels of health, obtain a hyper candy, get a random ability, and one other thing...
Meta Knight appears and does, essentially, a screen nuke a la the Crash ability.
Meta Knight can help Kirby throughout the entire game, and, hypothetically, could be called upon in Dark Meta Knight's Radish Ruins fight.
That would certainly give pause as to if you were actually fighting Meta Knight: Meta Knight attacking Meta Knight.
Overall, it would've made little sense in the case of the narrative, motifs, and gameplay aspects to have a true Meta Knight fight in the game, but, as he had become an important character to the series, having him only appear for story beats and screen nukes might upset people expecting to be able to fight him with this set of copy abilities, and, I mean, they already wrote themselves out of using Dedede, as his thing as main rival or ally wouldn't have fit in the game, taking into account only the designs of previous games, so they had to contrive some kind of fanservice, continuity fight for fans besides the minibosses, and dark mirror versions of characters is what they came up with.
...and reused it as an out and extra layer of fanservice when they fanserviced themselves into a corner in Triple Deluxe.
I'm rambling at this point; I should stop.
Moving ahead, Meta Knight is an important character, but he's not an important boss fight.
I imagine it can be stifling to have to make and remake Meta Knight fights without contriving some outside reason for it to be different.
After all, Meta Knight has already been explored as he is, and he doesn't show signs of having any more large character developments.
Without outside influences like Dark Matter in its many forms or other antagonistic forces taking control of Meta Knight, the fights with him wouldn't differ much at all, and it would become stale fast, especially with Kirby getting new abilities and improving the movesets of old ones.
I could practically see a normal Meta Knight fight be replaced after the intro with a fastforwarding and a message of "and you basically know how the rest of it goes" by now.
The series is already kind of struggling with stagnation a little bit; it would be a dangerous move to recycle fights almost exactly at this point.

I always liked his fight in Squeak Squad.
It doesn't have the same sense of fairness that you talk about but for good reason, this time he can't be fair. It's one of 3 boss fights in the series where Kirby fights a natural Meta Knight, but in the Squeak Squad fight, he fights all out featuring many attacks not featured in other fight because in this fight, Kirby is the bad guy

But it sounds like you just want every kirby game to do the same thing with metaknight, and if they want to deviate from that, you want them to do it in ADDITION to keeping him the same. While i agree this game returns metaknight to his original status after some time, i wouldnt say this game "saved" him. he didnt need saving.
its not like he's been mischaracterized, like you said, in amazing mirror he's a fake, and in robobot he's a cyborg which would focus on efficiency over fairness. these are both good ways to subvert metaknight without compromizing his character. They still could have included a normal metaknight fight, or had mechaknight still retain fairness despite being a robot, but i guess they chose not to.
However, squeak squad and revenge of metaknight do deviate a bit. revenge gets a pass though because it was like, his 2nd or 3rd appearence at this point, so you cant blame them for not having a clear pattern for him.
Sqeak squad is harder to defend, but i still feel its defendable becuase metaknight was trying to prevent kirby from opening the chest. It wasnt a challenge, he had an objective. but even then, the room before hand gives you the option to use a sword. You can argue metaknight left it there to still kind of give that fairness despite his greater objective...but they also give you beam so idk... My point still stands, he was trying to stop kirby, not challenge him.
..i got nothing on return to dreamland though. yeah he's not straight up a villain, but it feels weird that he's just there to help
Basically. i dont think star allies "saved" metaknight. It just brought him back to his roots. but the other instances werent bad or wrong, just a change.

Hey Gatekid - I mention in the video there is a place for those breaks in form, but they shouldn’t outright replace a fight with Meta Knight like they have in those games - but supplement like in Star Allies, in my mind. They’re fun - just don’t make his character arc stronger as an antihero
Thanks for checking this one out!

    • @Gatekid3
      @Gatekid3 5 років тому

@@skipthetutorial Right, but that right there is why i started my comment the way i did. Suppliment over replace sounds like, "have variations of metaknight, but also have him in his original role" (like in star allies). Thats not a "break in form", the original form is still there. Saying they shouldy replace metaknight is kind of saying every game with metaknight needs to have you fight him in the same honorable manor. I dont think that adds to his arc either, its just reinforcing the status quo.
honestly your own argument on star allies is confusing when you think about the fight itself, why is metaknight more about fairness when he's evil? And why does he revert back to 1 on 4 towards the end? If metaknight captures/removes your allies or fights 4 on 4 the whole time that would be different. Looking at it that way it looks more like a tacked on metaknight fight rather than something thought out to the degree you described. It has the giving of the sword, but that clashes with him taking all 4 of you on for half his health. He could have brought in his own allies (the metaknights) when you pick up the sword. I think that would have been cool and fitting to the theme and to metaknight.

    • @skipthetutorial
      @skipthetutorial  5 років тому

The Meta-Knights as reinforcements would be great! And as far as the fairness when he’s evil - my points were more focused on a gameplay standpoint in the boss battles with the lore as a secondary setting for that. If the mecha Knight fight played fair and even, then I would say it feels like Meta Knight in that way.
To note there is that I do think the lore is worth analysis here - and definitely a fun aspect, but this video is more how his character theme is shown through the boss fights.
I don’t imagine the fairness angle would get old or repetitive, since Star Allies keeps the same spirit of Adventure but adds in new elements like a second phase shift, multiple clones to match the number of your team (except when down to 1, which gives him two - but I’d venture that’s not a reflection of the intended way when the game is built around the ally system so strongly) - fairness can still exist without being the same fight. It’s a concept of balance, which can be applied to numerous concepts across the board.

I think I have a good way to do Dark Meta Knight and Mecha Knight in a style you may like.
Dark Meta Knight: starts out the same way a normal meta knight fight does, a sword laying there, and "Meta Knight" waiting nearby. But as you are about to take the sword, he attacks before you can get a chance, as a small bit of foreshadowing that there is something off with this meta knight, and then the dark meta knight fight goes on, maybe have dark meta knight duel with both swords to show the clearly unfair nature he has.
Mecha Knight: The mecha seems to be offline, and there is a mech suit nearby, due to the fact they are all robotic and the mech suits are the mechanical of the game, it seems fitting to have that replace the sword, as giving you a mech suit rather then a mere blade is far more fair. The battle starts as you enter the suit and mecha knight awakens. But after you beat him, the second battle, there is no such thing as kindness as Mecha Knight is covered in far more machines with clear signs that he was being altered and messed with to make it where he will obey the wishes of the company.

I don’t quite agree about the feel of the boss fights in Star Allies, but for different reasons.
I feel that the second phase of the meta knight fight was still easy and that the rock attack was sluggish. His slow movement patterns and the ease of countering him watered down the fight further. The original morpho knight fight also caught my eye as sluggish, especially with his ultra sword-esque attacks that were predictable. Sure, his attacks would definitely catch some inattentive AI, but rarely a player.
I think the speed and devastating attacks of a meta knight fight are what make the fights for me. So while Star Allies might hit the themes, it seems to miss the gameplay.
Of course, I felt these were greatly improved in their parallel forms. Parallel meta knight is still a bit slow, but he significantly lowers the windows of attack by guarding more and jumpig back more, making the pace more brisk and tense. Morpho Knight Ex is much faster, and teleports much more often to complement his fighting style.

This may not have much to do with the video, but Meta Knight is a big reason why I prefer the NES Kirby's Adventure over its GBA remake (Nightmare in Dream Land). Both versions obviously have you fighting Meta Knight and his crew multiple times, but Adventure also includes a few moments where Meta Knight tosses a lollipop into the stage, while NiDL kept the lollipops but removed Meta Knight from those moments. With NiDL, you mainly see Meta Knight as an obstacle because of this. With Adventure, however, acting as both a "secret" helper and an antagonist shows a more multi-dimensional character, one whose motives are far more colorful (or gray, however you want to see "not black-and-white") than you might expect. It's easier to see in Adventure that Meta Knight ultimately wants Kirby to succeed, despite how Dedede has trusted Meta Knight with a piece of the Star Rod. Why does he want Kirby to succeed? Possibly because Meta Knight believes Kirby can destroy the Nightmare, which would be a longer-term solution than Dedede's current plan to just block the Nightmare from spreading its influence.

  • @DustyMusician
    @DustyMusician 5 років тому +1

I really, really don’t think Meta Knight ever truly meant or was meant to antagonize Kirby. When you fight him in Kirby’s Adventure, it’s twofold: to train Kirby and to delay the release of Nightmare until Kirby is ready to fight him. In Amazing Mirror, he tries to quell the Mirror before he’s defeated by Dark Meta Knight. In Squeak Squad, he’s trying to stop the release of Dark Nebula. In all other scenarios, he’s either been possessed or mechanized.
Only in Revenge of Meta Knight does he seemingly attack out of malice-except it’s not from a drive for dominance or anything. It’s to whip Dream Land’s citizens into shape so they can get things done. It’s just that, well, military dictatorships aren’t really in the um, style, of Kirby? Kirby thinks his methods are wrong and stops him, something he’s done many times before.
The Kirby “mainstay villains” are more like Kirby’s philosopher dads than anything else. I don’t think Meta Knight needs to be mysterious and aggressive.

The reason Meta Knight wasn’t the boss for the other fights is because he’s taken on a much more helpful role in recent time, just like Dedede. The Mecha Knight fight is as it is because the Haltmann Corp. made a super powered robot version of him, and see Kirby as an annoyance and have a need to eradicate him as he poses a great threat to their venture. In terms of Dark Meta Knight, the reason they aren’t exact fights are because it isn’t exactly Meta Knight: it’s the evil version of Meta Knight who is out to just win the fight and not give a fair fight. With all actual Meta Knight fights it’s always the same. A fair fight. That’s why the other fights aren’t the same

  • @kirbonicpikmin8809

I think the point of the Mecha Knight battle wasn't to replace normal Meta Knight fight, as now Kirby and Meta are on good terms and frequently work together, so seeing Meta Knight converted into this robot is more representative of the main villain of the game. The Haltmann Works Company. They corrupt, take over, control, and most importantly, they play dirty. They don't care about Meta Knight's honorable ways, and end up making Mecha Knight the antithesis to Meta Knight. He looses his speed due to the garish massive scorpion arm (which is actually the Halberd's arm I think) and all the mechanics weighing him down, he becomes less skillful and efficient because he's equipped with lasers and heavy armor and is stifled by programming. They corrupted Meta Knight to his core and that's what makes the fight so compelling and interesting to me. As a long time fan, I got a little tired of the one on one fights they've been using for so long. So Planet Robobot's way of mixing it up made it one of the best Meta Knight fights in the franchise imo.
Not to scoff at his Star Allies fight, ESPECIALLY not Parallel Meta Knight, which is up there with Mecha Knight + EX as one of my favorite Meta Knight fights, with it actually being challenging, having such a variety of attacks, and the duplication putting a nice spin on the normal sword to sword fight.
Yet again, good video man! I've been loving this series, and Kirby's my second favorite franchise of all time, so these newest uploads have been a treat. Keep up the great work!

Now that I think about it, meta knights revenge was completely justified because time and time again the residents of Dreamland rely on Kirby to save them (being lazy) even though they betray him for the enemy's side. And meta knight being the Noble warrior that he is was fed up that Dreamland takes Kirby for granted, inturn that he decided it would be better if Dreamland were run by him and his crew.
    Or I'm just over analysing

I honestly think my favorite use of Meta Knight was in Squeak Squad/Mouse Attack (depending on UK or USA english name you go with) where he's just... Attempting to prevent Kirby from doing something incredibly stupid, namely awakening Dark Nebula, in his quest to recover his cake. (Actually I kind of love Squeak Squad/Mouse Attack's plot generally. There's just something about 'a bunch of treasure hunters steal something from our hero and in his attempt to get it back he accidentally unleashes an ancient evil' that's pure Kirby. It's hard to imagine another franchise pulling off as effectively, even after you wipe the specifics of 'the treasure hunters are mice' and 'the thing stolen is a slice of strawberry shortcake')

I think that the Dark Meta Knight and Mecha Knight fights may be intended to contrast with the "true" Meta Knight fights. Dark Meta Knight doesn't have the same interest in honor as Meta Knight, so he doesn't care if Kirby is fighting on even terms, so he doesn't offer a sword, and he's more willing to attack ruthlessly. Mecha Knight doesn't really have Meta Knight in control of his actions, so he's going to use all the bizarre Haltman tech incorporated into his suit regardless of how fair the fight is.
Star Allies' Meta Knight is actually Meta Knight, who's...mostly in control of his own actions. As a result, he's once again interested in a fair fight, though the influence of the Jamba Heart makes him more impatient and aggressive than previous fights (as he initiates the fight without the sword if Kirby approaches him directly or takes too long initiating the fight, and he doesn't care if he knocks the sword out of Kirby during the fight).

I actually like the fights that don't feel more traditional BECAUSE they don't feel more traditional, and for good reason.
First off, I LOVE Meta Knight fights, don't get me wrong. I absolutely adore how there's at least one person in Dreamland who chooses to fight Kirby on equal footing, no more, no less. But I think the Dark Meta (or as I like to call him, Mesa Knight), Mecha Knight and the Meta Knight's revenge fights also fit because they're less traditional fights in less traditional Kirby plots (less traditional in quotation marks, because this IS Kirby we're talking about). Mesa Knight is Dark Mind's strongest warrior (to my knowledge), and the exact opposite to Meta Knight - someone willing to use underhanded tactics to win the fight, like being on unequal footing, trying to fool Kirby into lowering his guard with a familiar and relatively friendly face, getting others to do his dirty work.
The Mecha Knight Fights work because he's not Meta Knight, he's Mecha Knight, captured and turned into a cyborg by Haltman Enterprises, a company hellbent on expanding its business. They're literally the ones controlling him, so it makes sense they made him stronger to wipe the floor with those who try to stop them.
And then, Meta Knight's Revenge. This one also fits, because he chose to disobey the king, he chose to try an experiment, to see if HE could be the ruler of dreamland. He had to go against some of his morals (equal footing, and the fact that he's still not okay with letting his crew go down with the ship) to try and get what he desired; fairness for the people in Dreamland, specifically for the working man, who would probably be rightfully mad at those who were lazy for not contributing to society. Which in turn, is still him being attached to his morals, thinking about it now.
Als sorry if you've heard these points a thousand times or something.

Metaknight always fights you fair and square as equals. Almost like he is holding back because he does not want to destroy you but simply test you. Moments like Dark Meta Knight and Mecha knight show us that if forced to Meta knight can be alot tougher and crueler in the boss fights. It goes to show how much Meta knight truly holds back to test kirby

The odd thing about you saying those fights are more villainous portrayals is that they actually end up serving to make Meta Knight look more heroic in the end. Sure this fake Meta Knight/mechanized Meta Knight are being mean, but once the real Meta Knight shows up/you free Meta Knight from the weird cyborg stuff, he’s totally a bro and helps Kirby out. Heck, even the Star Allies fight follows that pattern, since he was under the influence of the Jamba Heart, and then is a dream friend afterwards.

Dark meta knight as well, he was meant to be a villainous meta knight
The argument of these 2 bosses as making meta knight not being fair like the og battle is redundant, one’s a controlled robot, and the other an alternate version
In squeak squad meta knight didnt offer a sword, and it was also in an attempt to stop kirby cuz the box contained dark nebula

There are reasons why Metaknight doesn't fight fair in a lot of the Kirby games. Like in Squeak Squad, Metaknight is trying to keep Kirby away from the dark treasure chest that contains Dark Nebula. Meta Knight has served his purpose back in Adventure and Super Star, so HAL tries to put him in more situations for him and Kirby to fight, whether he does fight fair or not. HAL knows that Metaknight, or any Knight, fights are what fans like, so having him get possessed or mind controlled are the only ways for those fights to happen since Metaknight's own Arc is finished, unless HAL gives him another reason, on his own, to clash with Kirby. Maybe in the next major game.
