  • The west Kootenays is a motorcycle rider's dream destination with its windy roads, beautiful scenery, pristine nature, hot springs, wineries, great food, rich history.
    This past summer I rode my Honda CB500X from Vancouver, British Columbia (BC) to the west Kootenays in pursuit of some of the best riding Canada has to offer!
    Episode 3 follows my journey from beautiful Creston to Kaslo where I meet a vintage motorcycle builder and see his impressive collection of restored vintage cafe racers. 🎥 Filmed by me and my fellow traveller Sina.

    Now I understand why the XS650 twin engine is popular among builders. Definitely my favorite sounding engine in the group of vintage bikes. Sounds like a bucket list ride for sure. Thank you Megan for bringing you amazing journey to us.

    Thank you for making a great video. That area is just the most amazing motorcycle country. I hope the gentleman has good luck with his motorcycle rental business. I see he has two XS650 motorcycles, which are fun bikes to ride. I am riding a 1978 XS650SE which I have had for 13 years now.
    I remember very well, leaving Nakusp on my XS650 a few years back. It rained from Nakusp to Balfor along highway 6. It stopped raining at the ferry. I had a beautiful ride along the Kootenay Lake on 3A, and good weather all the way to Cranbrook. I highly recommend that area as one of the best biking areas for riders from Calgary area. I may take my XS650 for a trip out to that area this summer.

    Loved the cafe racer bikes. Nice restoration work. I was especially fond of the GS750, in part because I had a Suzuki GS500 at one time that, while a smaller bike for me (I'm right at 2 meters tall), I could throw that thing into corners and it loved it. Also the Yamaha 650 Special. I had the larger 750 Special as a touring bike with saddle bags, a trunk bag, fairing with lowers, foot pegs, etc. Great to see someone keeping those classics alive and thanks Megan for the wonderful videos and beautiful scenery!

    Thank you for sharing your trips.
    The experiences shown here are so similar to Western NC and North Georgia in the US including the mountain and lake views, the quirky bike campgrounds and the roads. The "only in Canada" happy comments are probably what we say as "only on the Blue Ridge" here.
    I'm wintering with my daughter and helping with her newborn this year, so I miss riding in the highlands.

    You've out done yourself Megan...this video is the best one yet imo! Amazing part of the world...glad you didn't take your bike up into that hailstorm! Wow, that was crazy. Really loved the old Cafe Racers...that brought back some great memories...hope the guy succeeds in his new rental business...something quite unique. For me the 650 Yamaha's were my pick...great, simple, rock solid bikes in their day!
    Forgive me for saying so (no disrespect intended) Megan, but don't your long legs get uncomfortable on that CB500X? It looks to me that your legs are far too cramped when you're sitting on the bike. Maybe it's just my age, but I'd want to stretch out my legs a bit (I'm 6'1" with long legs myself)...then again, you probably don't feel it at your age.☺️ It's just an observation, but I think I can see you one day on a bigger bike, where you can stretch your legs out a bit...like on a cruiser! The advantage you have in your part of the world is the long, winding roads, which lend themselves to cruiser bikes. Sadly we don't have such beautiful roads here in Armenia, but we do have beautiful scenery.👌
    Wishing you all the best in the future and hope you arrived safely back from Thailand.🙏
    Best regards from Mitch

    • @MeganKaptein
      @MeganKaptein  4 роки тому +2

      Thank you, Mitch. Lucas is a very skilled and meticulous builder and it was a pleasure to see all of his motorcycles. Personally I struggled to pick a favourite because they are all so beautiful.
      I don’t actually have any issues with the comfort of my bike... perhaps after a couple years of riding a lowered Ninja makes this bike feel luxuriously roomy in comparison! 😂 I do have health and youth on my side though, so things may change in the future, who knows!

    I live near Kalamazoo MI .. Last Summer I watched a Severe Thunderstorm develop from my Shop Windows.. I saw a few pea sized hail pellets hit the ground .. A week Later a friend who has a Yoo Toob Farming channel and lives 80 miles from me asked if I had damage from the Hail Storm near Vicksburg MI.. I am, 2 miles from Vicksburg.. I checked the Local News and they had photos of a Church 1 mile from me that had Hail like 3" deep on ground.. There was a corn and soy bean field near there the hail stripped every leaf off from the stalks and stems.. Leaving no crop at all ..
    At this Church they showed Hail 2 feet deep at the edge of the parking lot where all the hail washed to. Many Houses in Vicksburg needed new roofs and all cars parked outside had severe hail dents on them ..

    Thank you for the videos, I've been fortunate enough to visit your beautiful country several times. Although not on my motorcycle. I know all about the hail, we also suffer from hailstorms in Brisbane. I friend over here has the same bike as you fitted out as an adventure bike, basically 50/50 tyres and it gets him to all sorts of interesting places. I'm certain you have places & roads that are just as interesting.

    The hail storm reminds me of my last trip to Mt. Washington. It was early August at the bottom but a Winter storm at the top. But you can find videos of cars and motorcycles (I had taken the cog rail up) driving up in nice sunny days where you can see for miles and miles...you can really get all kinds of weather so check the forecasts carefully. Also thanks for introducing Lukas and best wishes to his business.

    Hi Megan! I’m in the process of purchasing the 2018 CB500X and I was wondering where you purchased your side and top luggage boxes? Are you pleased with them? Love your videos by the way! Thanks! Julie

    • @MeganKaptein
      @MeganKaptein  4 роки тому

      Hi Julie, thanks for watching! The brand is Kappa and they were purchased second hand. Overall I'm quite pleased with them. They are compatible with the Givi mounting system which is a big plus, and the top box can fit an entire helmet which is also a feature that I value. They're easy to take on and off as well. The top box has built-in indicators which is a great safety feature, but unfortunately the wiring was cheaply done and broke, so now one of the blinkers doesn't work. The other downside is that they add quite a bit of extra weight to the bike, so I usually take them off if I'm just going for a day ride.
