As a Spanish-speaker (as well as Italian-speaker) I immediately understood the Latin word for video or movie, as it's related to the Spanish word "película," or "movie," while in Italian, the English word "film" is used for movie, and "pellicola" is literal film or foil (though in Spanish "película" also means physical film incidentally). I remember once a Latinamerican friend told me that he was asked by one of his Italian bosses during his shift at an Italian restaurant to go get the "pellicola" (the aluminum foil or something like that) and he was like, "Wait, why do you want me to get a movie? Which one?"
Wow.I last studied Latin at school 35 years ago - but I still understood a lot of this. Thanks to both of you for a fantastic video!
YAAAAY!!! I’m so happy you enjoyed it 😍😍😍

Come mi inorgoglisce, sentire che tantissime lingue e tantissime parole derivano tutte dalla nostra patria come migliaia di altre cose, ad esempio i nomi i cognomi i soprannomi , la cultura l'arte le invenzioni le scoperte, sembra che Dio abbia fatto il mondo e poi al centro ci abbia messo l'Italia e gli Italiani
❤️🇮🇹❤️
Io sono spagnolo. Italiani, francese, portoghesi... Tutti siamo la stessa gente.
As a spanish speaker Iwas able to understand 90% of the conversation. You guys rock!! Now I want to learn Italian and Latin.
Wow. Latin sound perfect and how Italian close…Very sad what this language not so popular, I’m crying when thinking about…(
It’s okay, Luke is encouraging lots of people to learn it with his videos ☺️
You can learn it and make Latin more popular)
I've learning Spanish, I can understand a good chunk of of the spoken latin
See?? It was way easier than I thought it would be
Luca quasi tutto il video:
"Lingva latina facilis est! :)"
Hahaha he wants to encourage us 🥺🥺 so sweet
Sì, come no?! È distante dall'italiano, non si può negare!
Interesting. Spanish speaker would instantly know "pelicula."
In Italian we have"pellicola"but usually to say"film"/"movie"we say"film".But,yes,we would have totally got it!😉🎥
In French “pellicule” means the material; “film” is that what you watch on the screen. In German there’s no difference; it’s Film only…
@@martinneumann7783 "In French “pellicule” means the material; “film” is that what you watch on the screen."Exactly. In Italian as well.And"pellicola"can also be the film you use to cover food.
In spanish it is "película", with accent.
@@alvaroarce7104 In English it is «accent» with two «c» 🌟😉🌟
Sou nativo da língua portuguesa e entendi 90% do que ele falou! 😁😁

Sim, exatamente!
I did not know that Giovedi comes from the Latin Dies Jovis. That is fascinating! Also, this 100% what I have been saying to my friends for a while. If you know Italian, you can learn Latin so much easier.
I loved this video, it was so much fun following along! With a Spanish background, there are similar words I can follow just like Italians. This is so cool, and I'm glad you enjoyed filming as well as learning
Yaaaay, I'm happy you enjoyed it! I have a ridiculous amount of videos from this trip, I hope you enjoy the rest just as much!

That was a pleasure to watch. You both seem like wonderful people. Keep up the good work.
From lockdown in Australia.
I want to learn from both of you...
Thanks so much for watching!
I'm Spanish and understood a great deal of it!!
Good job!!
Amazing crossover with two fantastic people! 💥 BENE!
THANK YOU!! 🥰
Wow, Luke's such a natural star. It brings back some of my Latin (but in a fun way). You're still the real star though Elissa! Thank you for all of your videos. 😍
He is!!! And thank you 🥰🥰
As a native Spanish speaker from Puerto Rico I was able to understand about 90% of what he spoke.
Oh wow, I never thought knowing French would make understanding basic Latin so easy! This is so cool!
I feel like I would learn everything I've learned in the past 4 months of studying Latin just by sitting down for like an hour with him.
VERY likely
Never seen you before but I got this at the top of my recommended, so I suspect you'll be getting an influx of Luke's subscribers sometime soon.
Oh I’m glad it’s getting recommended! I hope you enjoyed it 🥰
È veramente affascinante sentirvi parlare, seguo entrambi da parecchio tempo, soprattutto luke in realtà, sentir parlare in due lingue diverse in modo così fluente tra di voi è realmente un massaggio per le orecchie
Very interesting!! So happy that you are having fun with it!!
Yay! Glad you liked it 😁
Seeing you two on a park bench resulted in posting the video in my blog. Luke knows I've posted his stuff before, but Elissa is a nice addition. Elissa: years ago when I had a tutoring center, there were six Elissa's at the same time, but each one of the girls spelled and pronounced her name differently.
Oh thank you so much for sharing it! 😍
When I saw you on luke's channel I wonder why you looked so familiar. You thought me Italian on your channel and didn't notice lmao. Nice crossover!
Omg that’s awesome!! I’m glad you made it here 🥰
Can't wait to watch more of your content. Also, I don't how but my English seems to wrong up there. Must be the faulty grammar checks.
I’m so glad to hear that!
I can correct it if you want 😁

@@elissa.dellaera Thanks!
This video is a lot of fun! Latin from scratch is fascinating.
YAAY!! I’m glad you liked it 😍😍😍 it’s so cool
As luke pointed out, earing him using a different prononcation from the one i learned in school is veri strange. Every time i have to translate mentally His "U" in "V"
This was so cool to watch! To think that you were able to understand the language that Julius Caesar and Marcus Aurelius spoke 2000 years ago... literally so BONKERS
RIGHT? It feels so badass hahaha
I stumbled on Mr. Ranieri and then found you. This was fun watching. Love your enthusiasm. Thanks for posting!
Yaay! Glad you liked it!!
Speaking fluent Spanish you can understand basic conversational Latin as we witnessed here. The Spanish language shares the following with Latin: sibilant s, conservative verb conjugation, syntax of some phrases, many words, and simple vowels.
Latin to me sounds oddly Italian in melody but also like Spanish with the sibilant s. Aside from the other stuff mentioned.
Luke out here lookin like the end of the level boss you gotta fight to get your degree from harvard
Pellicula pulcherrima est! Multas gratias ago vobis!
Gratias!!! 💛
I am a native French speaker and I also understand Spanish (intermediate level) and a little bit of Italian; it is funny that I can understand maybe 50% of what he says.
Ahh I never expected this collab!!!!

Interesting. In Portuguese we also use the verb more commonly than yes to answer questions. It's more natural. But we use no more often for a negative answer.

My mother tongue, Oriental Miraya (Daragueño), is an Austronesian/ Philippine language with shavings of Spanish and I can understand atleast 15% of the spoken Latin in this video. LOL.
We use the words "pasil" and "dipisil" for "easy" and "difficult".
Great video! I learn a lot from this sort of comprehensible input.
Isn’t it cool?? I’m glad you enjoyed it!

What a super interesting episode of learning Latin. Thank you for sharing. It was very educational.
Glad you enjoyed ☺️
Amazing 🤩 Latin is so beautiful
It is 😌😌
I am surprised how much i am able to understand due to my knowledge of English and sanskirt. Even though my knowledge of latin is zero.
Thats because english has lot of latin vocabulary and latin's structure, syntax and morphology is EXTREAMY similar to sanskirt due to their common ancestry
I can't help but smile for 3 mins watching this 😂

It always seems to be at butt related words (like rēctum and rectum) where you realize the importance of the vowel length.😆

I have studied Latin in high school and I am learning Spanish now. I understood about 80-90% of it. I have one question, is 'película' a modern fill in word in Latin for 'movie'? Because the Romans didn't have movies, obviously. Thanks!

Being sardinian and knowing sardinian and italian of course, latin seems very easy. Why was I such a mess with latin in school!
I'm a native Galician and Spanish speaker and I got 90% of what Luke said in Latin.

But with the title of the video, now i feel dumb for thinking a few days ago that you knew Latin lol
No hahah I’ve never studied Latin! But it’s so close to Italian that it’s pretty easy to guess 😁😁
Latin Is the core of western civilisation.
Funny "Sweet ice" In Croatian the word for Ice cream is Sladoled which literally means the same.
Really?? It took me so long to understand hahaha
ma che belliiii!!!🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Nice video 🙂 Bel video
Thank you!!
I'm not a historian so take it with a grain of salt. But I think using the same word for sunset and to kill makes sense when you take into account that the solstice was seen as the "death" of the Sun in pagan religions. Then Saturnalia in December is the rebirth symbolised by the cerei candles. The fact that candles have been used as a winter holiday gift since Roman times is hilarious to me. SNL even has a skit about gifting and regifting Xmas scented candles lol.
Hola, que tal?,

felicidades por tus vídeos...
It is interesting that, many years ago, they invented esperanto to create an "international" language. All they had to do was re-introduce latin as a spoken language with vigor. I benefici sarebbero stati incalcolabili! Pax et Bonum...
In Bulgarian the word for ice cream word by word translates to English as sweet ice. Just like Latin. Сладолед [swah doh let]
Hehehe, it’s a cute name, although I feel like “sweet ice” would be a better way to call a popsicle as opposed to ice cream

I came here from the video 'First Latin lesson with Italian speakers' of Luke's ScorpioMartianus channel. I know some Latin and currently I'm learning Ancient Greek.
Just asking, do you want to learn Latin (I mean learning seriously) ?
Ciao Elissa, pellicola è una parola che oramai non si usa quasi più, tipo solo per le vecchie macchine fotografiche a pellicola :) bel video :)
unlike the Spanish equivalent "película" which is very much used meaning "film /movie".

Da siculofono capisco moltissimo!
Actually I'm still convinced that Latin should be study at University rather than at school.
How come?
@@elissa.dellaera At school you can barely speak and write your own native language; IMHO it's pretty pointless to teach a teenage an ancient language.

Tamen Latina lingua...Optime.
Non Hollywood, sed urbs Aquifoliensis Angelorum vicinia.
You should do a video with a romanian because all that you spoke i could understand ex: lingua latina facile est -> limba latină este facilă
pelicula -> peliculă / pelicula
Quid facimus? -> Ce facem
Gratias -> Graţie
And many more
Fun fact mulţumesc comes from latin multum est wich means thank you
Ego sum -> Eu sunt
I would love to see such a video
Edit:
Mihi nomen est -> Numele-mi este
Heri -> ieri
Regina -> regina
Regis -> rege
Aeris -> aer
Unde veni -> De unde vii?
(veni = a veni = to come eu vin, tu vii, el vine, noi venim, voi veniţi, ei / ele vin)
Taurus -> taur(ul)
Ursus -> urs(ul)
Colores sunt similaris
Culorile sunt similare
P.s. i dont know lati so sorryvfor the mistakes

Vere icundum erit cum Catulli carmen hexadecimum invenias, Elissa :D
I don't know what that means :(
Are you sure that -ae of the plural or "ti" of gratias are pronunciated that way?
Yes, this is the classical pronunciation of Latin. You'll also note that C is always hard /k/ and V is pronounced /u/. In Italy people mostly use the ecclesiastical pronunciation of Latin, which follows Italian spelling rules.
