Join me at Living Latin in New York City 2024! Use this link to get $50 off the $180 registration fee: www.paideiainstitute.org/llinyc_registration_payment_speakers
I don't get any money if you sign up, but I'm happy to be able to offer my audience such a huge discount to this one-of-a-kind event. Nōs vidēbimus illīc! See you there!
    ERRATA
At 3:37, I said "Tiberim" but I think "Rubicōnem" would have made more sense, since that was what Julius Caesar's 13th Legion was so famous for doing. While I had practiced my talk beforehad and knew what I was going to say, I did not memorize it verbatim, so you're hearing me speak Latin fluently from my head as I would speak about these topics in English (and thus errors and gaffs can occur, as in any fluently spoken language).
13:25 For some reason I say "pilum" (with a short vowel) instead of "pīlum," apparently confusing the word with "pilus," meaning a hair.
Many thanks to my friend Metatron, who inspired me to learn about the Lorica Segmentata. See this video of his on the Lorica Segmentata that I helped him translate into Latin: ua-cam.com/video/lJq_l6Ihs2c/v-deo.html

      you did great.
though something curious happened to me with 2 of your videos.
I somehow understood almost everything you said despite me not knowing latin, maybe surrounding myself with italians and knowing spanish may have to do with that...
      anyhow good video man.

@ScorpioMartianus, an extended tour through Romanian universities and highschools would be highly appreciated. Romanians love it when someone is making fun of their ancestors, the Dacians. I watched him walk down Lexington avenue in New York last year in his uniform. It was certainly interesting that most people (native New Yorkers??) seemed to not really react although they did glance while tourists did a serious double take. It was inspiring and amusing for those of us at the "Living Latin" conference who knew we would soon see him do this presentation after lunch. If you have the opportunity to go to the conference, you really should.

I like how you accentuate important points with hand gestures and speak Latin intensely and emotionally. It's not unlike hearing modern Italian and Spanish being gestured and spoken by current speakers in their respective nations. No doubt that part of the Roman influence has lasted all these centuries via the speech patterns and gestures (and helps with the authenticity- to say nothing of keeping the audience ready for more)!

As I listened to the presentation, I could hear the future echos of Spanish, Italian and Romanian in some of the words.

This doesn’t mean much I know lol but I’ve been using Duolingo for Latin for 129 days so far, and I understood a sentence! You actually translated it differently than the literal so that was interesting. The caption said “and why do we do this?” But you asked “why do we make this journey?” You’re an inspiration my dude. Keep it up.

As the legionary was speaking, I was thinking 'oh we also have a trajan's column here in Romania, how many columns did this guy raise?', and then I felt immediately SEEN and vaguely offended by this roman soldier. Wonderful work!
Though I say that I'm offended, the column is still somewhat of an artifact of a founding myth of my country, as I don't speak Dacian, I speak very new-fashioned Latin.
Seeing the first page of my récit national or roman national (haha roman) presented in such a way by someone who was there is a wonderful experience. These videos are fascinating, and those people are very lucky to sit in the auditorium.
    Cheers!
