    This semester in school I enrolled in a materials science class for my engineering degree, and we've been learning a ton about the metallurgy that goes into hardening steel for use as a tool. It's all graphs and cooling curves and doing the math about how much of a metal's internal structure is of what composition at what temperature, and it only amazes me more that skilled blacksmiths do this stuff by feel, and have been for many centuries before the exact science was understood. Great work gents, it's always worth the watch.

      CrimsonTemplar2 the only reason I hate forged in fire is the fact they only give you 3 hours to build a Knife/Sword....and then they basically want something that will bash iron bolt and then cut tissue paper...

      @@eslcity I agree, not one competitor on that show has ever turned in something in the second round for testing that they would have let out of their home shop. So many episodes where nobody won, someone just lost not as bad as the next guy. These 2 guys are much more fun to watch.

    • @mrkiky
      @mrkiky 2 роки тому

      @@starhawke380 David Roeder did. His knife was perfectly finished with his touchmark stamped on it after the first round. But I agree, the vast majority are horribly non-finished and delaminated pieces of scrap. At least you don't feel bad when they smash it into the iron bolts. Plus they give them these unrealistic challenges like harvest steel from a shopping cart and a can of beans. Basically sources of metal that you'd avoid even in the apocalypse. Or forge outside in the sun, literally no situation where you'd be forced to do that. Nobody would set up in the sun. Gauging the temperature of steel in full sunlight is not a skill that any smith would develop or need to develop. At least the final round saves it a bit because the parameters are realistic and they get to choose their own materials, and have proper time.

    • @Vault57
      @Vault57 4 роки тому +13

      Matt Loring the metric system isn’t confusing to us, it’s just the conversion of everything already existing in the standard inches/ounces that makes it a pain. Grandma’s old recipe for Kicking Butts and Taking Names Chocolate Chip Cookies just isn’t gonna be the same if you round off grams from teaspoons. Same with engineered items (let’s not discuss the unfortunate incident with the Mars Lander...). Now if we start with things in metric to begin with, no problem, we don’t have to convert anything because we can get or make metric replacement parts. But I do agree, metric is a superior measuring system, we just need to make it THE system taught in schools at the get go.

    A BBQing addage works with slow cookers: if you're lookin', you ain't cookin'.

    • @pr0xZen
      @pr0xZen 3 роки тому +4

      It's not that bad though. When slow'ing in the BBQ or smoker, a very substantial portion of the thermal sum is the air volume inside. And a BBQ is not conducive to fast recovery within a small delta - a quick recovery in a BBQ would demand having to introduce much higher temperature heat even though for a short while.
      In a slow cooker holding a pot, chili etc though - once up to temperature the majority of the thermal sum mass is in the chili. The majority of its internal volume is that high-mass food. Meaning unless you leave it open so long that the overall volume of food loses significant heat, it should thermally recover within a minute or two after putting the lid back on. And if the heating pot needs to help it along; as the heat source is in direct contact with the food mass, it can dump s lot of energy into that without needing to boost the temperature notably above the wanted target temp for the food. As it does not need to compensate for the indirect mode of heating that a BBQ (or almost any kind of oven) does.
      Tldr keep the lid closed, but thermal recovery time is not nearly as bad as with a BBQ.

      Well, who amoung us have actually lived in about ten states? I have. Every state has it’s positives and negatives. Montana is nice but gets to cold. Plus the gas rates are about as high as California. Texas was alright but there are a LOT of dumb asses that cannot hold complex thought in their mind for longer than a second. Hell, if property prices weren’t so damn high California where I live is perfect. And don’t call it commieland. I do have a few more rights than the rest of you. Just can’t get a cc permit unless I can PROVE I need it.
