    You can tell you are very precise at what you do.. I'm the opposite. A handmade knife , I like it to be shown that it's not made by a machine . But by my hands , so perfect I dont do.. and shiny I dont care for. I like forced patina . I like a knife that looks used and worn, even when o just made it . I got to say you probably are one of the best I've seen . And tight fits like that definitely last forever. Perfect fits.. also I dont have but basic tools . If I could I would love to buy all the nice tools to make it much better and easier.. great work

    good job on inletting the knife into the face of the guard. Great touch. On swords, that is needed to prevent any guard wiggle. Great work. I prefer hand chisels and gravers (and maybe an airgraver). But, for simple, hand chisels work pretty well. Thanks for sharing and I hope my comments are not annoying. I am learning as we go, too.

    Kyle, instead of using a burr to cut the pocket for the ricasso, you can use masking tape and electro etching.
    You already use the etching for your maker's mark. You can use the same technique to etch that shallow relief.

  • @sm4rtmouth
    @sm4rtmouth 5 років тому

    Nice quality vid, well done. Just one little addition, if you don´t have a rotary-tool you can file the ricasso at an taper at the very end, instead of grinding a 90° step. Also filing the handguard with the same taper gives you a pressfit with no need to close a gap and connect to any other surface up front. Shoult also be stronger since sharp corners increase the chance for stress fractures. One could also rround them off but fitting radii is way harder. Ragards Smarty

    also important to have good files, maybe a bit of a obvious one but you know the difference when you get a good one vs a cheapo one on metal. But its nice you go into detail how you get it to fit right. I'm also making a little knife as a little try-out project and seeing how cheap equipment and not using the right tools to get it to fit, so now I need to do a shitload of grinding to get the handle to be square to the blade :(

    Excellent instructions! Nice to know I'm doing at least some things the "right" way lol, I even have a couple homemade broaches shaped like yours with a single tooth 👍😉. I haven't actually inlayed a guard onto the ricasso yet, so I've found that it helps to have the guard face close to the final grit it will be finished at so that once I get that water-tight and light/shadow free fit up, I don't end up needing to remove even a thousandth or so, which has caused me to have to do a bit of extra filing in the past. I was thinking It might also help to let others following along with your online course know that they can just use sandpaper on a granite or glass surface plate if they don't have a disc grinder, which doesn't seem to be quite as common as a belt grinder in the shop. I'm looking forward to seeing the handle sculpting, I've been meaning to try that palm-scallop shape for a while. Thanks for sharing, guys :-)

    • @KyleRoyerKnives
      @KyleRoyerKnives  5 років тому

      Yes, thanks for the tip about letting people in the course know how to flatten things with sandpaper and a flat surface. I'll be sure to go over that in the course. That's what I did before the disk sander and still use that method from time to time but forgot to go over it so far in the course.

    One tip I would like to share with you is when you drill holes that have to be accurately placed you should use a center drill to make a pilot hole because they are short and stiff and they don't wobble when they hit the center punch marks like a regular drill bit will. Try it out I'm sure you will like the results, I'm just trying to help not being critical just using my years of experience in drilling.

    If you are not in a hurry cracking that superglue bond, and want less fumes coming from heating the Cyanacrylate glue, you can put the piece in the freezer. That would also prevent warping of thin guards made from stainless.
    Coffee blend of my preference is a blend of coffee roasted by a small shop some 50 miles from my home. Very well worth the drive from where I live, but from any english language nation, it might be a bit far.

    Amazing work my man. question- what is that tool you are using that draws that line across the handle? the one that sits on the table to find s center line?

    The glue and wood is good. What about a magnet?
    Or a bar with an adjustable grip and magnet on the end?
    A jig to put on the end of the tang instead of hammering directly on the tang?
    Not criticizing just multitasking my brain as I watch you work.
    Good stuff
    Thank you
    Update
    I tried a magnet and it works but really needs to be strong.
    If you play with magnets you’ll notice their strength is front to back force so “pulling” but not so much side to side which is why you can slide a strong magnet but not pull it straight off.
    If it’s not strong enough the sander slides the piece off the magnet if you press hard.
    Recommend tape to protect the steel.
    Not perfect but an option.
    Recommend lock clamp or similar for Heavy grinding as it gets hot.
    Either way it’s always easier to control a bigger piece than a small one.
    I didn’t lose this one but anybody that’s ever ground or buffed a small piece has probably said those famous two words while standing there with empty hands listening to the bing bing bing of flying falling metal so you have some idea where it went… :)

    I cut the guard slot with a screw driver and a hammer. Messy but cut pretty well. I really wish I had seen this earlier.

      On some of my early knives I used a chisel and hammer, I'd clean it up with a file

    you can use handle magnet for sanding down steel fittings like the bolster. I also use mine when I need to clean something with my angle grinder if I am doing damascus with little bitty pieces like 1-inch ball bearings I pancaked to make some stacked damascus rods I was planning to use for a twist project and then completely misplaced the rods I made... I need to find those rods.
    I am wondering have you tried doing a modern version of punch and drift where you drill a hole in the center of your stock slightly smaller than the thickness of the tang then toss it in the forge to drift it wider before hot fitting the guard to the blade. it's faster then this method which I call the machines method and takes less time to accomplish the initial fit-up and I made the drifts I use out of Railspike which are quite inexpensive. I kinda feel this technique was partially lost as it is not even mentioned in the official abs book on handles and guard. however, I am not 100% sure if it's as fast as I feel it is as I have never timed it as I have only done it 1 or 2 times.
    I just started forging an American Carlson's raiders machete that will be somewhat modified to match my personal esthetic tastes and I am Iforging it from a truck leaf spring. the reason I chose to make it from salvage is I have never made one before and in my opinion salvage steel is the best steel to use when you're forging something for the first time because it's not a huge hit to your wallet if you screw it up and need to start over. So I will time how long it took me to drill and drift the hole and get back to you on how long it took me.
    Keep up the great entertainment, and educational work.

      Ok i said i would time it and I found a hidden tang blade I forgot i had that needed to be fitted for a guard or bolster so i timed my method and it took me 13 min and 6 seconds to get a piece of 1018 cut off its stock, drilled with a 1/8th bit, drifted with the railroad spike drift I made, and hot fitted. i likely could do it faster then this if i just focused only on the task at hand, however, that's just not how I forge I do things well waiting on heat...ok the exception is Heat treatment. you can get a 5/8th inch railroad spike from Blacksmith depot for 2.00 a piece.
