Shane's face really pulls at the heart strings at 4:21. The sadness there is so obvious, the man was distraught, he was close to Ronnie, and clearly had the utmost of respect for him. Shane MacGowan and Ronnie Drew, two Irish legends.
Could anybody write down what Shane was saying, please? English's not my mother tongue and I frankly can't tell what's he talking about. Thanks in advance :-)
Ronnie singing "The auld triangle" at the end was fucking magic, what an absolute legend he is, used to listen to my aul lads lps of the early dubliners stuff, when i was a nipper, and im still loving them now 30 yrs later, god rest them.
When Shane gets emotional, while talking about the last words he said to Ronnie, my heart litterally breaks into pieces. I loved Ronnie but I Fall at Shane Mcgowans feet and worship that man.
The fierce love and ownership the Irish people feel for Ronnie Drew is touching. I sing the auld triangle to my kids as a lullaby in my best (worst) RD voice.
I was amazed and yet not amazed to learn that the composer who misunderstood Bono's answering machine message was none other than the late Robert Hunter, the guy who wrote lyrics for the Grateful Dead. (Clever little allusion to the Grateful Dead's "St Stephen," I see -- I suppose he just couldn't resist). Dude is absolutely beyond brilliant. When both Bob Dylan and Shane MacGowan, two of the world's greatest living songwriters, have sung your lyrics you know you've accomplished something in this life. Rest in Peace, Robert Hunter. Your words will still be with us a thousand years hence. You and Ronnie can team up and write a few songs for the angels to sing.
It's good to see moments of Ronnie looking over at the congregation of people - some of whom he played with, some he didn't , but all who loved him - and looking happy. It looks like he enjoed it. He was a great man, and the best coda to enjoy him on is to picture him, as on this video, appreciating a tribute from his peers.
Everytime im having a Guinness, im always thinking of Ronnie. I used to play The dubliners on every party we had when i was in my 20's, instead of the popular radio tunes everyone expected to hear. It was a hit everytime, and always i was drinking my Guinness whilst everyone else had their cheap skanty beers. Right now im listening to Biddy mulligan and of course accompanied by a Guinness ;) God i miss Ronnie!
God bless this man! I'm cryin' to in a way, God bless ya Ronnie, God bless ya!! One of my favorite singers of all time, he's a Dubliner indeed. Amen. :(
Simply beautiful tribute. Very sad to hear his voice so weak at the end of the video singing Auld Triangle :*( I didn't even remember that powerful voice I heard singing Mc Alpine's Fuzilers
Luke Kelly, Ciarán Bourke, Ronnie Drew, and Barney McKenna. Rest In Peace. Rest in Peace. And may John Sheahan live a long and fruitful rest of his life.
May they all rest in peace, Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly,Jerry Ryan, and all our great characters and musicians, Why do people feel its OK to be rude to other humans here on y-tube, Bono and U2 are also great musicians, just an other style.
this is the first time i have seen ronnie ill and i shed a tear ime 18 and am sad to say thit in my lifetime we have lost the best singer ever to have lived the only other person that is in the same world is luke kelly god rest and god bless them, one day i will meet and buy them a drink
fucking right, it should of been Shane MacGowan leading this song, if anyone knew Ronnie and was liked and respected by Ronnie is was Shane. Ronnie and Shane sounded like two angles without their wings but flying high anyway.
recording the backing tracks for a tv show in england in the 70,s ronnie asked me over and said vinny is this a tv shoe we are doing , yes ronnie i said , he let a moment pass and said where ,s the fucking cameras , i said this is how they do it these days we have to mime on the live tv show ,on the live tv show the next day ronnie took little interest what a great man j vincent edwards
I must say i never really liked ronny's voise in the dubs, paddy was for me as a sound but to hear more and more of him i have come to understand that is voise is one in a million, its very own cut to make a same song sound like a brand new one. And on this vid post to the end he was and is a pro. May the good Lord bless that DUB and pass us down another to fill his shoes. ps Im a Portlaoise man
Hi everyone! i'm italian..my english is quite good, but I can't really understand Shane's words! he looks very upset and I'd like to know what he said! thank you!!!! RIP Ronnie!
yes he is along with Ronnie Drew,I think Shane is an amazing human being. a real reg guy who could give a fuck about Bono and I bet he'd have no issue telling him so either.
Bertie Ahern is in this clip and everyones attacking Bono? That's messed up! Beisdes, it's not cool having a go at Bono when he's doing something nice for Ronnie! I'm not a fan, but he seems to cop more abuse than he deserves sometimes.
That live performance shows what a great musician Bono actually is. He was the lynch pin in what must've felt a bit like chaos and he towed the melody and added unique Irish elements...not to mention just lively showmanship. Say what you will, Bono puts in a full day's work no matter what he does. Also, Andrea Corr is excruciatingly beautiful.
@@TheJobtate Holy 2012 comment! Bono is no Luke Kelly but his love of The Dubliners is legit. ua-cam.com/video/mWzYSJ3-Cjw/v-deo.html&ab_channel=axblack
can someone PLEASE tell me what the f**k shane mcgowan is saying around the 4:20 mark!? I know he is tearing up right then, but I never have any clue as to what he is saying. Seriously, message me if you have to On a second note, what do people have against bono? I'm not a big fan by any means, but it seems like some people just can't stand the man at all?
I'm not sure, but it sounds like, "Something like, (?) ya know, best of luck Ronnie see ya later, ya know, ya know, and ya know, like, um, slan go foill or something. . ." Edit: The last part ("slan go foill"), is "goodbye for now" or "keep safe" in Irish or Gaelic. I'm not sure the exact meaning.
@karmapeach you can't disown him foe being arrogant and lost .... thats like the English claiming George Best beause he was an Ulsterman.....there both Irish.

Seeing Shane MacGowan come to tears, a hard pill to swallow.

Shane MacGowan is the best thing in music to ever come outta Ireland. Amazin man

It's so sad to think that both Gerry and Ronnie have passed away now.

i love dublin and dublin people
2 great men to be honest. Ronnie and Jerry!
rest in peace ronnie luck and barney
i think i may have found my soul

Descanse em paz Ronnie...
fucking right, it should of been Shane MacGowan leading this song, if anyone knew Ronnie and was liked and respected by Ronnie is was Shane. Ronnie and Shane sounded like two angles without their wings but flying high anyway.
4:30 Shane says it better than anyone could. RIP Ronnie!
Marvolus chap that Ronnie..
It was a pity we didn't hear much from Sinesd
Nice interview by Gerry. Ronnies the best. Who the hell is bono.
recording the backing tracks for a tv show in england in the 70,s ronnie asked me over and said vinny is this a tv shoe we are doing , yes ronnie i said , he let a moment pass and said where ,s the fucking cameras , i said this is how they do it these days we have to mime on the live tv show ,on the live tv show the next day ronnie took little interest what a great man j vincent edwards
rip ronnie voice of ireland
Bertie Ahearn should be listening to the auld triangle every day-for real.
A member of U2 saying nice things about an Irish musician who pre-dates them? This can mean only one thing, the knives are out.
Ronnie is amazing, the ballad of ronnie drew is one of the only vids i've posted but aside from that, is Bono doing Andrea Corr or what?
MacGowan is an absolute wreck. Really, really sad.
fucking brilliant
Does anyone know the song playing at the 4 minute mark ?
5:48 jesus the 2 of them now....wonder if their up there somewhere singing it together, guess we'll all find out someday xx
we will never see the likes of the dubliners again
3:54 Actually Gerry it was the 16th of August 08 I remember being in Croke Park in the bucketing rain
barney is no longer with us either i do believe
No, unfortunately not, and he was another legend
What happened to Ronnies deep dark sharp voice at the end, is he tired or something?
You see how sad Shane McGowan are in 04.35
Where's the full song
Pity Gerry got the date of his death wrong.... Was at home watching it and we all copped it...!!!
trouble doniedaff is that you think he is false-there is nothing false about him.life might be sweeter if you could see the good in people.
Scouse kisses to Ronnie and the Dubs - people with hearts
my guess is that Ronnie would dislike this event.
I must say i never really liked ronny's voise in the dubs, paddy was for me as a sound but to hear more and more of him i have come to understand that is voise is one in a million, its very own cut to make a same song sound like a brand new one. This is probably one of the few times that Bono seems sympathetic.
Hi everyone! i'm italian..my english is quite good, but I can't really understand Shane's words! he looks very upset and I'd like to know what he said!
thank you!!!!
RIP Ronnie!
Agreed.... Where was Daniel O'Donnell?
It kinda sounds like Shane might have said "Best of luck Ronnie, see ya later" cant even guess on the rest
Is that Paul Brady in there at 0:42?
yes he is along with Ronnie Drew,I think Shane is an amazing human being. a real reg guy who could give a fuck about Bono and I bet he'd have no issue telling him so either.
Didn't Ronnie Drew die on the 16th of August 2008? The narrator says he passed away on the 10th of August.
Shane was so torn up
i love ronnie drew ,,i love phelim drew that song for the men and women that were there its shite,,get a grip people,,he deserves better
I just gotta know...who is the 50 ish bearded man, @ 1:26 of this video-PLEASE!!!

@kyzual Shane says: "It was something like, you know, best of luck Ronnie, see you later - you know, you know, I dont know Slan go Fail or somthing"
Gerry calling it "the OLD triangle"
FFS Gerry. ..
good on ya bono-cant understand all the negativety you people give him.sound like nz's-love to take down success
its weird that gerry is doing the commentery and now gerry is dead asweel :(
That's a tribute
I wanna say that Ronnie was probably made up with the whole thing but to be honest I just think you're so right.
the one and only who should sing this is Shane Mcgowan
@kyzual He said "Slan go Fail" - See you later
Slan Go Fail Ronnie!!! Now to find some tissues after that version of the Auld Triangle!!!
Well they're musicians anyway.
...maybe 1:25
I can't belive they had Gerry Ryan do the interview bet he didn't even appreciate the fat he was interviewing Ronnie Drew
a much better tribute to ronnie is "the bould ronnie drew" by dunne and dunner have a look it puts this to shame!
IRISH SPRIT NEVER BEAT IT

I'm not sure, but it sounds like,
"Something like, (?) ya know, best of luck Ronnie see ya later, ya know, ya know, and ya know, like, um, slan go foill or something. . ."
Edit: The last part ("slan go foill"), is "goodbye for now" or "keep safe" in Irish or Gaelic. I'm not sure the exact meaning.
My first reply was incorrect, please see my edit above.
Well he supported our dictator fyi
slan go foill, just means goodbye for now, or see u later, u know?
he's unique in that he has money.
Patsy Watchorn
irony
i dont understand a fuck to McGowan when he speaks xD
And what the fuck is McGowan saying????
@karmapeach you can't disown him foe being arrogant and lost .... thats like the English claiming George Best beause he was an Ulsterman.....there both Irish.
this song is sooooo tacky
ronnie was a legend, so five stars to him
When I see bono he's getting punched in the face for this
Why does bono sing in an american accent?
Bono is about to push Mike Love from the throne of the most hated man in pop music.
thanks for the memories lads.ronnie&jerry..
