Great review! I'm a 15 year user of Evernote, but now that I'm retired I don't like Evernotes continual rise in price. I exported all my Evernotes into PDF, then uninstalled it in favor of Apple Notes. Up until now, I've not paid for Apple iCloud. But if my Notes storage gets larger, Apple's Cloud storage is far cheaper than Evernotes yearly cost.

I am a doctoral student and I use Apple Notes extensively while doing research. I keep two screens open on my iPad at one time-the article I'm reading and Apple Notes. Using smart notes I can organize my research and quickly find it when needed. I use Apple Notes in my personal life as well. The checklist feature is great for grocery lists. Once you tap on an item, it goes to the bottom of the list but is still there for the next shopping trip. In my work I use the scan document feature to turn in time sheets and other documentation. I agree with you that the Smart note feature is a great search tool.

I have a folder in Apple Notes that I named Wallet and this is where I store individual photos of my loyalty cards, library card, etc., so I don’t have to keep key tags or full sized cards. I open Apple Notes, open my Wallet folder, touch the file with my CVS card and hold my phone up for the clerk to scan. It works every time.

I tested the limits of Apple Notes in terms of memory. I wanted to transform into a note this big file I had, the full 614 pages of a dictionary I summarized. And I was astounded: no problem whatsoever, the note is fully functional, no slowing down as I scroll into it.

I love that I can lock my passwords in Notes & use Face ID to open it. I have learned something new today. Thanks very much. As an 80 year old, remembering passwords is getting more & more difficult. This way I can also access them in Notes as well as in Settings on my iPhone 11.

I have been an Apple Notes fan since the first day I bought my first iPhone. I’ve always appreciated the simplicity of it.
That said, I have also tried so many note taking type apps because they had the one or more shiny things than Apple’s. No matter what new shiny object other apps have, I end up transferring those notes back to Apple.
Great job on your story telling of Apple Notes. I even learned about the option to capture text. Thank you.

Have you considered discussing the Reminders app?
I found the most amazing thing when I set a reminder for a specific location (like when I drive past a certain store on my way home).
You can actually increase or decrease the radius from that location so you get the reminder a little sooner and not too late (like when you are passing said store).
    It was brilliant!

I also use reminders for shopping for groceries. You can create an entire list of every grocery item you buy over time and mark them all as completed. Then when you need something you just open the list, click the item needed again and it immediately moves to the top of the list which can then be checked off when you pick it up.

Great video as always Steve. As with many of the other comments, I have used many of the other note taking apps. Bottom line for me is that Apple’s notes is so well integrated into their ‘ecosystem’ , Siri’s ability and the simplicity of the app and enhanced security makes this a ‘no brainer’ decision for me.

Thank you for the useful review!
I choose to use Notes as the main app.
    Most powerful features:
    1. Password - with FaseID is working strongly and efficiently.
    2. Folders - the most convenient way to organize your notes.
    3. Scanner - for work and personal life I scan a lot of documents and convert them to PDF, then sync them into Google Drive.
    4. Simplicity - you have what you need to simply start work.
    Weaknesses:
    1. Simplicity too ;) I need some more editor instruments (color pallets, link organizer, etc.)
    2. Synchronization - maybe this is personal, but my iPhone XR and iPad 2022 don’t synchronize properly from time to time.
    3. Unity with Reminders and Calendar - it will be a lot useful, like we have in Google (Gmail / Keep / Calendar / To-Do)
Eventually, Notes is a powerful personal productivity tool.

FYI, if you hold the Apple Pencil stroke (stop moving it, but don’t lift it from the iPad surface) at the end of creating certain markups (circle, arrow, straight line, heart, triangle, square, heart, etc) it will create a ‘perfect’ version of said object .. in your example, you would have had a couple of arrows, a square, and straight lines of highlight color on your text ..

The Hey Siri feature is one I would have loved 20 years Ago while working with ex-Toyota Consultants on conversion to a Lean Production system. I used to follow these men around the factory floor while trying to handwrite my notes in a composition pad. So often this was done I was while walking and the result was messy writings.
I have taken those notes and am now reading them into thenNotes app. But translating my scribblings is sometimes difficult. Being able to add pics of examples to my notes would have been a remarkable benefit, as well.

I've gone back and forth with note apps and I'll usually end up back in Apple Notes! I love the sync and features. However, there are still features in Notion that are beyond Apple Notes. I would love to see a video about consolidating notes from all the apps into Apple Notes. Thanks for the video!

I am almost exclusive Apple Notes now. The scan documents feature, tags, and quick notes along with the organizational structuring and search features and the ability to move You Tube videos, snap pictures, etc is among the best. I do wish they would just merge Pages into Notes and be done though. It is REALLY basic in it’s ability to make a note look impressive. Thank you for your video. I can always pick up something I need to be incorporating into my daily use.

same. it may look simple but effectively powerful i would say. i took 300+ notes in it during lecture or for my own purpose and its great for a person who's not into unnecessary things

@Lil Queerdoe When I want to make notes regarding a UA-cam video to refer back to I may move that video to Apple Notes and place it in a folder that I have created .. such as health. As I watch the video I make my notes. Later, if I choose to share the video and my notes I am able to do so from the Apple Notes folder.

I wish they'd merge pages into notes too, although I'd never thought about it! Make them one app and make it so you can hyperlink notes to other notes and I'll never use anything else.

I find it great for simple things like remembering combination padlock numbers and alarm codes and locking the note makes that feel secure . I wouldn’t ever use it for really important passwords . Also the swipe from bottom left to make an instant note is a feature I use a lot . I use Microsoft to do as a to do app more but will take quick notes to convert to todo later I would prefer to use reminders but cant save a pdf to reminders I think and I need to do that

Great features. It is interesting that there is lots of similarities between Google Keep and AppleNotes. I used to love Evernote only, but know I am using all three, depending on the note. For apple users I think the connectivity with IPAD, imac, iwatch etc iApple note is a winner. Question Steve, Why my applenote in my Iphone does not have the scan text feature, which is awesome ! Thank you,

I use Notes all the time. I regularly find myself taking scans, inserting text, sharing notes (like a grocery list, and keeping a locked note with passwords. I would like to see apple incorporate the recording function (audio and/or video) similar to notability where notes are synced with a recording. It would be especially cool if they could sync across devices, like setting up the iPhone to record something while I take written notes on the iPad and having them sync together so when I review the note and listen to the audio the notes “re-write” themselves as I listen to the playback.

Hi. I like Notes. Use it a lot. Used to use Evernote but now Notes provides me with all I need for my work. Quick syncing across all my Apple devices, locked files, scanning docs, create quick notes in MCB hot corner and of course Siri.

I have been using Microsoft OneNote for over 15 years. I think it does, and has forever, all of this and more. I use it mainly in a business scenario but it does personal stuff obviously. The camera integration using an iphone may be better with this, but I don't do that much. One thing I do all the time is "print to OneNote" using the print driver. This allows pdf email attachments, which I get all the time, to be organized and processed through OCR in the OneNote search index. This, for me, has been a daily use since 2008 and has been an enormous advantage. I know Apple people like Apple stuff, but all of your key points (have to see about the camera) OneNote has done all that for a very long time.

Sounds interesting but I would hate being stuck in the Apple ecosystem. Apple is number one now, but I remember when other phones, like Palm Treo product lines and Centro. I copy and pasted all of my Palm Treo notes to my new BlackBerry.. Also, not to forget about the Blackberry. They were the most popular smart phone of all at the time. I used their built in Notes app. It worked very well and I had hundreds of notes back then. Also just to mention, BlackBerry had excellent wireless backup and sync. BUT as early as 2010-2011…. somewhere around then, I got the touchscreen bug, like most everyone else. I opted for an Android. The problem was All of my notes were stuck in the Blackberry ecosystem. The only way I could think of to get my notes out, was to painstakingly copy and paste out all of my notes into Google Documents. About a year after that, I was missing a BlackBerry again. New problem, was also an old problem. Now my notes were stuck in the Google ecosystem. I finally turned to Evernote, around 2012. It was cross platform, on BB, Android, and iPhone. I painstakingly copied my notes into Evernote then. Ever since then, I have owned more BB, countless Android phones, and a couple of iphones. My notes are always with me now, no matter which phone line I choose. I'm sure Apple notes is excellent, but I just don't want to be trapped again. Good luck to you all, no matter which app you choose. I love Steve's videos. That's why I'm here.

Thanks for pointing out the Scan Text and Scan Document integrations.
Ever since my Evernote days, I've found the need to scan both text and documents. I've used Scanner Pro since. I migrated from Evernote to Obsidian when the future of Evernote became questionable. Whereas I like the idea of Markdown, it's way too unwieldy (who can remember all those formatting sequences?) and Obsidian has grown into an overly complex beast. I'm going to be testing Notes going forward, but I have a good feeling about it.
