    Pretty cool and beautiful. I bet those boat rides take some getting used too. Lol. I like the fact you have to think ahead and prepare. That would eliminate about 90% of the people from being around you. :) Thanks for sharing and stay well & warm.

    I spent all of October in an off grid cabin about 20 miles north of Ketchikan and the weather was starting to get pretty rowdy then. On Oct 1st, the airport had wind in excess of 100mph. You guys are a lot further north than that.

    Living on the island where you do certainly makes life more difficult, although you've got a beautiful view right on the water! I'm curious what motivated you to buy the cabin on the island rather than some more in town like the Mrs's parents?
    I can see that sometimes going back and forth can be difficult depending on weather, tides, and amount of sunlight you have available to make the trip! On top of that, nothing is certain as the weather isn't always as planned. I'm guessing the Mrs. stayed home and kept the fires burning. Give her our best and that she was missed!

    • @AnAlaskaHomestead
      @AnAlaskaHomestead  3 роки тому +2

      I will give her your best. Yea she stayed back and took care of the pups and chickens.
      We looked at places in town but Juneau is built on the front range of mountains and ice fields. There’s not really a rural area. I don’t dislike people but I wanted some leg room if you know what I mean. So we started look for property of near by islands.

    First, it is good to see Gunnar in the background! Second, Great Video of what a trip into town is like at this time of year! Down here we have to go a little farther on the water, and down't have as many choices on land, but the steps are pretty much the same. I use some 15 gallon drums for diesel, Uline carries the drums, they have some advantages over jerry jugs, but loading /unloading details prevail.

      These are great questions. We should do a wood stove Wednesday video on this. Our plans were to never be on an island. We looked at property in the interior of Alaska and found several nice areas. My wife is from Juneau and her parents still live there. She wanted to be close to them but Juneau is the 3rd largest city in Alaska. I didn’t want to live in a residential neighborhood so our compromise was buying a place on an island near Juneau. Kw we get to live the “Alaska life” but also get to be close to her parents and a big city. On a nice day it’s about a 40 min boat ride. So not too bad.

    As far as being part of the U.S., Alaska may as well be an island. Not all Americans can drive through Canada to get to Alaska, so those people would have to go by boat or plane to get there…. Most goods are shipped in by cargo ship or barge…. Sounds like an island….

    You need to add. A old air plane wheel from the landing gear under that tongue with a steering wheel mount a cheap lawnmower /minibike motor with a side shaft weld a side sprocket to it and sma sprocket to the sode of the airplane wheels like like the rim. Them have a long floating dock. Long enough that you can do los tide or high tide that leads up to a enclosure like a boat house but built on land. Now you can back that trailer up and stress it from walking in front of the tongue. Pull the boat onto the trailer. Then use the motor to pull it out of its not strong enough use a eltric wench that is attached to the furthest inside who of the boat house. Yeah it will take some time to build a week or so. But to save all this time and having to wait a day etc. Verses pulling up backing the trailer in with the motor mounted driving the boat up onto the trailer and using a enchanting to pull it up the air into the boat house is so much easier and you can steer the trailer. As you pull it up even if the boat house is only a lean too. It will keep the boat out of the elements and right there at the water
