    Also on the islands in southeast ak,if a island has brown bears,that island wont have black bears and vice versa,generally.the brown bears will kill the black bears.that is what the locals say

    • @AnAlaskaHomestead
      @AnAlaskaHomestead  6 років тому +4

      Yeah that’s what I thinking. We live in between an island full of black bears and another full of brown bears. Although the black bear would have had to have swam 2 miles to get here. This bear was jet black, small hump, and narrow face. I though the hump may have been it’s shoulder blades. Once he was put in the open there was no denying it was a brownie.

    We lived Madison County Virginia back in the late 80's we moved into a small cabin that the owners put barded wire over the windows. After moving in we found out why, we would have 5 to 6 bears in the yard every night until the first day of bear hunting season, matter of fact our deer season opened 1 week before bear and every first day of deer season I would have a bear come to my deer stand.

    I’ve had the pleasure of seeing 3 black bears on my way to Broken Bow, OK. I drive a load of dry ice there twice a week. One was just past the prison outside of Heavener, and the other two were up 259 south just past the Three Sticks monument. Wonderful, beautiful creatures.........admired from a distance, or from the cab of a semi truck!! Lol

    Awesome bear talk. Old video, I'm slowly catching up. Great stuff young man. I'm almost 70 or I'd be there. Blew my chance in the early 1970s. Had a shot at a pipeline job & my woman was the issue. My mistake and I've regretted it ever since. 🙃

      @AnAlaskaHomestead  3 роки тому +1

      Well as long as we learn from our mistakes 😂 Its a great state and would have been awesome to have lived here in the 70s. We just had a memorial for a family friend. He was an engineer who played a large part in designing the ALCAN highway. Heard a bunch of stories at the service of when he was younger. Alaska was totally wild back in the 60s and 70s.

    The story about how K-Bar got it's name was that somebody who had their knife was up in alaska and got attacked by a kodiac bear, He killed the bear with just his knife after his rifle jammed and when he got back to the lower 48 they renamed it to Kill-A-BeAR. here it is straight from K-Bar's website.
    1920s
    Wallace Brown receives a package that forever alters the history of the company. The story, as first published in a training manual written years later by M.L. Brown, Vice President of Sales, Union Cutlery, is as follows: "Years ago an Alaskan hunter had shot a bear who then attacked him and knocked his rifle from his hands. In order for the hunter to protect his life, he took a knife made by Union Cutlery company and successfully killed the bear, which was the Kodiak bear species. The hunter in appreciation of the knife having saved his life sent the bear skin to President Wallace Brown. The thought then occurred to the management of the company that if the Kodiak bear is the strongest of the bear species, and the word bear is pronounced "bar", and further, if the cutlery produced by the Union Cutlery Company was the best and strongest of its kind, then it should be very significant that "Ka-bar" might truly represent the qualities of the company's products. Thus the Ka-Bar trademark was adopted."

    I've seen a few vids, one I think was less junk more journey where they went on a bear watching tour. The went up to some river that the bears were feeding good on salmon, and they were 10 or so yards from the bears! With the guides approval ! My thought is that if you are close enough to be able to hear the sound it makes when the bear rips the skin off the fish, you are at least 2 times closer than you should be. I don't care how well fed they are. Only takes one bear to decide you smell better than that fish for you to have a real bad day.

    Oh I liked this one. Here we have black and had dealings with a couple. Had grain inside fence, in a metal truck box under kitchen window for my goats. At 1 a.m. it decided to toss the box against my cabin shaking the whole thing. It was terrifying, no light of the moon NOTHING let off my 357 out the opposite window. So dark couldn't tell if it left or climbed tree etc
    Terrifying night. I'd never ever use bear spray plenty of videos of it not working on them. Ones back was about six inches over my 5 ft fence! It had twins the next spring. On game camera it was massive compared to other blacks

      Yeah both bears can be dangerous but brown bears are nowhere near as skittish as black bears. My dog has chased off black bears before but brown/grizzly seem to hold their ground more.

    I love to listen to you all talk about your adventures. About the only way I will experience anything like that is to listen to you all and the other homesteaders. lol I live in a holler in WV and that's about as close to cold weather as I want. I was born in Louisville, Ky and met my husband who is from here. We've been married 43 years and have lived here 33 years. I still hate it but make due. I have so many allergies it's not funny in certain seasons living here. I make due. I'm never going to get him to move so I might as well make the best of it. I am 64 now and its too late to uproot us and go somewhere else. We raise a garden and I can and also raise different flowers that keeps me interested. I would love to live by a lake and have a boat, he bought an above ground pool and set it up and floated a raft in it and told me that was my boat. lol We do work well together just like you two do so that helps a lot. Keep posting your video's, love watching them. Trying to catch up right now on them. Wish UA-cam would post them in order. lol

    • @AnAlaskaHomestead
      @AnAlaskaHomestead  5 років тому

      Hi Dorene, when I lived down south my allergies were horrible and my sons as well. Once we moved here everything cleared up for both of us.
      It’s never too late to make a change. My mom just moved to Texas after living her whole life in Oklahoma.
      This was our first year growing and we both love it.
      Maybe you could get a small bass boat and do some fishing in a local lake.
      I’m glad you two work well together. That’s key to making a relationship work. Sorry youtube doesn’t put them in order. Try looking in the playlist. I’ve broke up the videos by season and tried to put them in order. Let me know if that helps. Thanks for writing in and sharing with us.
      All the best,
      Brian

    Although one thing repoing cars in South Texas taught me is that your attitude has a lot to do with how tense situations are going to go, if you remain calm and confident, it is not very likely you are going to be attacked, but if you panic and show fear, you're going to get attacked.

      My lady Lynn was just up in Sitka last month for work, and we looked at a couple properties
      while she was there, but I am not a fan of the open ocean/tsunami exposure. I have a couple
      friends in Wrangell with connections to great affordable land. Leaning twords that area for sure.
      Curious... does your channel provide any extra income? Have not watched enough to know what
      you guys do for income, so forgive my lack of insight. I will be catching up on your vids, so look for
      my dumb ass comments!! lol I also hit you on Instagram with my TSP feed and also my bushcraft
      feed, Pacific Bushcraft Consortium. My name is Brandon, but just call me TSP is cool!
      Pleasure to meet you Guys! Cheers to you both and have a great Christmas and New Years!

      No we don’t make money off youtube. I’m retired army and get a little extra from disability. We had paid for everything and had a good enough next egg and I said I’m done working.
      Wrangell or Sitka both sound cool. Good luck to whichever you decide on.
      Nice to meet you Brandon.

    I live in the mountains of Colorado. I was working on a fence with my youngest son, he was 8 at the time. He just ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and had it all over his face. Suddenly my goats and highland cow came running out of the woods and made a circle around us and began stomping and snorting. I thought maybe an elk was approaching. I stood up turned around and a huge cinnamon colored black bear was crouched down stalking us 20 feet away! He stood up growled and waved his claws at us! All I had was a saw. I grabbed my sons shoulder and said don't run. I said "you get outta her bear" He slowly turned went to all fours and walked away. His expression was WTF! Is this? I called my oldest who was cutting wood. He got his shotgun, I got the 12 gage and we pressured it to leave. Put the livestock in the pen. And kept pushing the bear away. I saw on the news that night division of wildlife shot a record size aggressive cinnamon black bear in a neighborhood near us.

    Great topic. If you want to see bears up close, go to the Anan Wildlife Observatory.
    Other than that, give them a very, very wide berth. This will definitely improve your chances of making it to a ripe old age. With the salmon harvests being less and less every year, this is going to make for more aggressive bears. Being on your toes at all times is a good idea when you are in the bush.
    JUST FOR LAUGHS: In light of the rising frequency of human conflicts with bears in the field, the Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fisherman to take extra precautions and be observant. They advise outdoorsmen to wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren’t expecting them. They also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear dung. Black bear dung is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear dung is larger, has little bells and buttons in it, and smells like pepper spray.

    Greetings from Illinois in the Edgewood of Illinois... Yeah my question is about would steam engines if I was going to move to Alaska where electricity and gas prices are scares or high I would bring with me a small steam tractor engine five eighths of a size steam engine with either a generator or an alternator set up and yes having one of these things with me I would have to be concerned about a vast quantity of water supply but what puzzles me is that this item is not seen on videos about Alaska.. I do not know why this useful item will not be utilized within the vicinity of the shelter of Alaska Home Center quite frankly attached to the home unit itself as it hates the garage laundry room utility unit it was Supply hot water for a bath it will supply Heat throughout the house with the attachment of a hot water pump to radiators you can also utilize it to make pure water from Steam of course on my figuring you would have a woodlot and the steam engine would ultimately bring the wood up to the woodlot from hopefully the pasture area or whatever area it needs to drag it in from and you will be able to use this thing for cooking someone so yet this seems to be not the number one Hobby achievement of Alaska homesteaders or even I saw some mental thing to there solar systems that they like which cannot produce electricity in the dark Yet the steam engine can do so even a stationary engine would be nice went to have moreover if you're keeping water inside the utility room of your homestead and vast quantity Square tanks plastic he would want some type of worm thing within that utility garage corridor but I have not seen this logic within Alaska homesteaders and I do not think that are freezing problem would be a complete wipe out of the issue of having one since when it is cold you'll be using it indoors no I am talking about a 5 to 8 horsepower or maximum 10 steam-engine and I think a 5/8 shaft is a must anything lower would be in danger of breaking under strain load I have noticed that there is a problem with this is that most kits that they Pawn off to school children in the states are with small inadequate engines that are made just to prove the concept of steam engines however I have seen at auctions the popcorn engines and they have a beefier unit but this makes me Furious in the amount of waste of time and having a useless item pain to children or teenagers to perfect and find that it is too small I will carry on with one more point boilers are really not that difficult to make if you go to a primitive concept perfected by West Point in the 1800's they basically used long tanks and had a steam chest at the top they did not have any piping within them but they heated them all around and use low pressure steam that is a steam that one can see visibly and it is probably the steam that one on the homestead would want to make however hydropower probably would beat it out right but if you're making Lumber now I Steam Plant would be the ticket you may have to do some research to make a video about this subject but it will probably be one of your better videos

    • @AnAlaskaHomestead
      @AnAlaskaHomestead  6 років тому

      Thank you for the comment. I’m sure some people in Alaska my use a steam engine. You make a lot of great points on the benefits of a steam engine.
      This would be a great you tube endeavor for someone like you with a good deal of knowledge on the subject.
      I think we are going with solar and perhaps a wind turbine. The only downside I can think of for using a steam engine on the coast would be keeping it from rusting. If we leave anything metal out in the elements for any period of time rust will set in pretty fast.
      Thanks again for some great insight, I’ve never even thought about this.
      Have a good weekend.

    As far as Bear spray is concerned , two words. DOWN WIND! but where you two are you never know where the Bear or wind will come from. My luck would have it that the bear would be up wind and the spray would get all over me. At that point the best you can hope for is that the bear doesn't like spicy food.
