That conversation between the British naval vessel, and the Irish Lighthouse was real
So why have I seen exactly the same video only between an American aircraft carrier and a lighthouse? If you think a modern battleship can't tell the difference between another vessel and a stationery light house on radar you aren't very bright!
It's an old joke that goes back to the beginning of the 20th century between Britain and Ireland and has been copied by countries all over the world...😂

There was an old Irish joke my late Mum (whose Dad was from the Republic of Ireland, & a Catholic) told me - _years_ ago - which might make you laugh...?! 🤔
"A Irish woman went to the Confessional and told the Priest... "Father forgive me, for I have sinned' ...
The Priest said (for he has noticed how upset she was) 'Come child, it can't be as bad as that, tell me your sin so that I can Bless you'
The woman cried, 'Oh Father, forgive me, I have had no money, no food and...'
The Priest calmly replied, 'Go on my child, what have you done?'
And, the woman tearfully said, 'Oh Father forgive me, I have become a prostitute, to raise money for food..,'
And the Priest, shocked and dismayed, asked falteringly, 'What's that, what's that you said, child, what did you say?!'
And the tearful woman replied, 'Oh Father, I've become a prostitute...'
And the Priest sat back in his box and said with a huge sigh of relief...
'Oh my child, my child, I thought you said... That you'd become a Protestant!!' 😂😂😂"
😂😂 I remember when that would have been the worst thing you could do
😂😂😂😂😂
Derry Girls.. It's a must, Feck'n brilliant!
Dave Allen and Derry Girls - different eras but same cheekiness!
I'm English and love Dave Allen
Derry girls, definitely! Mrs Browns boys, I know some people love it, I find it totally unfunny! Dave Allen, pure genius.
Derry girls, mrs browns boys really is gutter humor, too forced
Dave allen is brilliant, old school. He is witty. Brendan grace is just crude, rude and insulting garbage,
Brendan Grace never cursed in his life.
Rude 😂
God u have not listened to many comedians in the last 2 years
Feck- used all the time, and isn't classed as swearing. But there's still a LOT of swearing lol. Dave Allen, 70's comedian, is hilarious, and explains what it was like being brought up Catholic in Southern Ireland.
Got to love Dave hes up there with Billy Connoly.
In Ireland all words have at least 2 meanings, it really depends on 2 main factors. 1. Tone of voice . 2 all the other words around it. So listen to all the words, because often curse words can be terms of endearment
@@berniemadden9548 same in Wales, with facial expression too sometimes lol
The late great Brendan Grace comes to mind when I think of funny Irish stuff. He was the only one we were allowed watch when we were younger as he was ‘grand and clean’, meaning no serious cursing. His sketch about Irish Mammies being the true origin of violence, not TVs, 😂 as his tv never ran up 3 flights of stairs after him, threatening him cause he ate all the apple tart. Some other ones I remember from his Irish mammies sketch.
‘If you fall off that wall and break your two legs, don’t come running to me’.
‘You three are a right pair..ye didn’t come in last night till this morning, and ye would have woken everyone up, only they were asleep. Now if you wanna stay here, you’d better get out’.😂
I loved Brendan Grace. He was one funny fecker. 😂😂
For some good irish humour you should check out father ted. Derry girls and the young offenders are a good shout for more modern shows and i will always recomend the film the guard
New series of young offenders coming 😂😂 YAY
My friends mum moved to England from Southern Ireland 70+ years ago, and still has an amazing accent and outlook on life.
An Irish or Scottish accent on a woman are the sexists accents there is... Why try to lose it?
Love the accent(s)!
My great grandmother came to England as a pre-school aged child, but she sounded as though she had just come from Ireland all her life. She died in her 80s.
You should watch Mrs browns boys it very good 👍
@@Freethinker959 Too much like the TV show "Bread" with an Irish Accent.
I think every Irish mum walked five miles to school and back in the snow even in June

You've got to watch Dave Allen. An Irish comedian. Ones for watching are Flying, Teaching children how to tell the time. There's a whole lot of fun watching this Man
Don't forget Dave's mum was English I believe
The guy talking about St Patrick’s day plays the dad on Derry girls really fun Irish show based in the 90s
I was flying home to ireland as a kid in the 90s and I remember reading an article in the inflight magazine explaining to tourists not to be shocked or offended at the amout we cursed 😂 One reason often given for why we curse so much is because the English language was forced on us. The Irish language is extremely descriptive and poetic and English never quite grasped or portrayed the feelings we were trying to portray so cursing became a common emphatic tool. I think that's a really interesting take!r
Father Ted, Derry Girls, etc you can always understand a country by its humour. Try FATHER TED " I HEAR YOURE A RACIST NOW FATHER"
Foil, Arms and Hog very funny trio. They are hilarious, lot of content on UA-cam 😂
Check out a show called Derry Girls, the guy in your thumbnail is actually in it. Its a comedy about a group of teenage girls in Northern Ireland during The Troubles
Thanks! Adding to the list :)
@@reactingtomyroots they are more catholics in northern ireland now than protestants as of the last census. The reason there is no conflict in america between catholic and protestant is because the have a common identity whereas generally catholics in NI consider themselves irish only and protestants british only.In the republic thats not the case only 2% are protestant and they generally consider themselves irish and have notions towards the UK.In northern ireland its still segregated they play different sports go to different schools, support different soccer clubs have different cultural associations ,vote for different parties not as binary as it was in the troubles but still fairly divided.
@@reactingtomyroots My uncle actually served as a police officer during The Troubles, he gave it up after he narrowly avoided being assassinated by the IRA. He was just starting his family. Now he's a successful nightclub owner, has had Snoop Dogg and Coldplay appear at his club
The Derry Girls is brilliant.
The last one is an urban legend and is more usually done with the naval element as a US carrier group. You can easily tell it's not Royal Navy, we don't have that many ships😢
There wouldn't be safe space for a fleet of any size between England/Wales and Ireland, a fleet of ships - why would there even be one of our shores, they'd be travelling alone until in open waters.
It's a logistical mess and wouldn't happen. It's usually subs that come down there, Portsmouth is the fleet HQ.
Plus ships of that size have more than enough technology to detect land and lighthouses...
Enjoy the joke because that's all it is...
Father Ted is a must watch , best Irish show ever ☘☘☘ 🇮🇪
Love from Ireland 🇮🇪
Also I think I've heard that lighthouse story told in about ten different languages with varying details. I like the one where the British captain says "we are a naval carrier ship accompanied by three destroyers and numerous support vessels, I suggest you change your course"
And the lighthouse keeper replies
"Where are a lighthouse accompanied by two dogs, a hamster, and a parrot who is asleep, I suggest you change your course"
True story - went on a tour of Guiness brewery in Dublin.
At the end you have 2 x vouchers for Guiness. All the Americans have 1 half pint and leave their vouchers on the tables..... me, 4 pints later, on the tourist bus singing Wild Rover with the driver 😁😁
I suggest you watch Derry Girls. Fabulous series set during the late troubles. It's hilarious. I had never heard swear words until we had some Irish student Radiographers join us. They were amazing girls.
Dave McSavage's, The Savage Eye. Irish production comedy sketch show only shown in Ireland. The Savage Eye. You won't get all the references but you'll get our humour.
Hi Guys , my mums best friends were from Ireland came over to England in there 20s sadly they are no longer with us , my mum adored them both and helped look after there terminally ill son , they were the loveliest people , kind , do anything for you and loved a good laugh and chat, they are very much missed 😢.
Yes my mum had friends who had to move away from Ireland. They were the salt of the earth.
❤️
That is true about walking to school. Our bags would be extremely heavy and you we would walk miles in every kind of weather, even hurricanes.
you need to take a tour in a horse-drawn cart in Irland the driver tells tail after tail for the whole thirty minutes
You mean tale after tale..Tail is like animals tail.
The ship collision skit was real but was between Spanish coastguards and an American Warship. There is a UA-cam audio clip of the actual exchange. I believe the Irish/English version was the Irish always like to poke fun at the British! I wonder why?
Because they are Irish
Its the perpetuation of stereotypes, The Irish like to believe that the British are arrogant, But the Brits use the Irish as the "Stupid Person" in their Jokes......but neither side mention the Northern Irish :D
If there's no malice there's no problem i my eyes :)
@@Tommy-he7dx They don't mention the northern Irish because both sides regard them as irish
@@Joseph13163 Agreed, but how do the Northern Irish see themselves
I remember hearing that years ago, but in the version I heard, it was between the American Navy and Canada.
If you want to see what Irish people are really like. Check out Irish fans at the 2016 Eruos. Lots of amazing scenes.. Including singing for the police, and cleaning the streets of Paris!

If yous watch anything its got to be father ted ,absolutely hilarious irish satire .
My first experience of Ireland was arriving at Dublin airport and getting a taxi into town with a total comedian of a taxi driver ... he was hilarious!
Highlights of the trip were:
The taxi driver.
Arriving in Dublin on a night where Dublin was having the biggest fireworks display ever in Europe at the time.
The group of Japanese people staying our bed and breakfast who were giggling and laughing like children and enjoying the novelty of having cornflakes for breakfast.
Visiting a cafe where the singer Sinead O'Connor used to work.
Walking around Dublin - fascinating place.
Staying with friends in County Roscommon and going badger watching, seeing loads of deer everywhere, and taking the dogs for a morning walk and being joined by a tame fox that our friend had recued and released as a pup.
Visiting Galway and the beautiful west coast.
It was St. Patricks week and the pubs and towns everywhere were busy with festivities.
Buying an Ireland t-shirt.
Sounds like an awesome trip!
A very insightful video, the late late show.... rita 1997. Gay Byrne was the host of the show for decades, and this programme was watched by every family across the country, every Friday night, after the nine o clock news, it would go on until about 11:30. And it was live. So things would go wrong. Everyone who was anyone would be on that show.
England/Irish history is so complex that it would take ages to explain but it is a massive "thing"! Even now there are still problems and legacies from the Troubles which occurred during the 70's and 80's which led to the Peace Accords. In the North of around the Border people mainly got on with their lives and it wouldn't affect their lives too much. Unless something like the local bridge had been blown up 'again' meaning the school bus had to go a different route to school! Which is something that happened to my wife when she was growing up.
I think you'll find the troubles were ongoing from the 20s. I am a Londoner and can remember fights in the 50s and 60s. The Americans gave copious amounts of money to the IRA, buying arms and explosives. I am English, but we're Catholics with an Irish great grandfather, and the troubles were hideous on both sides. Let's face it there are still those who would fight. I've had fabulous Irish friends, and I don't care what religion they are. I never will argue about my beliefs they're personal.
The 'lighthouse story' IS real but it was a US cruiser and an Irish lighthouse.
it was a spanish light house there is a video of it
It’s not real at all.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lighthouse_and_naval_vessel_urban_legend
@@Millennial_Manc well that could well be as the spanish response to the american navy was a bit too funny to be true.We are two people on land supported by a few beers ,food and a dog and i have no idea where we rank among spanish light houses so its your call .Not sure whether it was the first or second gulf war in anycase most lighthouses were automated at the time and certainly the second gulf war
I so wish my mother was still alive to ask here about Cinderella at the ball. Oh, to see her face. 😂 😂 😂 Fun video you two. Thanks for brightening the day. Peace
Imagine someone getting you a coffee and blasting a fart in your face? lmao! *or so they think!!!!!!!!!!!!*
you should check out Republic of Telly's "you know you're irish when" for a better compilation and more realistic satire of irish life :)
I'm a Scot married to an Irish gal and living in Northern Ireland for over 20yrs and we've three grown up children and the Irish are brilliant ppl. They're very musical, sociable and absolutely hilarious, sometimes unintentionally so. These clips really don't highlight this enough other than the brilliant comedian Tommy Tiernan & the two women when the bike topples over. I honestly hear better on a daily basis, if you do get to visit the U.I then Ireland is a MUST.😂👍
I'm English, laughing my back off at the lighthouse joke
It was between an American ship and a Spanish lighthouse, apparently. As this story has been kicking around since the 1920s though, it’s more likely to be an urban legend.
dave allen a must see
Tip from an Irish person in Ireland. If you ever come to visit don't stay in Dublin the whole time, like every capital city it is not reflective of the entire country. Get out of the main tourist spots too. We are a pretty friendly bunch, so where ever you land someone will start chatting to you.
Father Ted is a good one to watch to get a sense of Irish humour, it is an old one now and the church doesn't have as strong a hold on the country as it did when that was made, but still is funny. Derry Girls is another one, but it is set in the 90s (when Father Ted was made) in Northern Ireland.
the one about the man saying that his team winning was better than his wedding day was about his county team galway winning the All ireland hurling final which is like the superbowl except that 82300 watch it in the stadium whereas superbowl stadiums are usually not that big.
Love this, visiting Ireland is definitely on the bucket list it's such a beautiful country, can't beat a nice cold pint of guiness 🍺or a bottle of jameson Irish whisky 😋. P.s hope all is well for you guys out there. See some nasty weather over there at the moment. Just a thought, would be worth looking upon UA-cam, Mrs Brown's Boys. the story about the British Aircraft Carrier sailing towards an Irish Light House is complete and utter BS. this joke has being doing the rounds since the 1930's in various forms (different countries). just look it up on the Net to see that it is an urban legend.
Watch some Tommy Tiernan. He has a great way of telling stories about growing up in Ireland. And Des Bishop grew up in the US and stayed with family in Ireland. He talks alot about the difference and culture shock going from one to the other
Derry Girls, top tier show based around early 1990s Northern Ireland
Don't know if you spotted anything about hair colour and eye colour? Dark eyes and dark hair, a legacy from the Spanish Armada who fled the British Navy and navigated round west and south Ireland on the escape home. Quite a few liasons took place.
Thats a load of nosense the only time those spanish sailors had any contact with irish women is on the beach where they were robbed by them.On a beach near me 1000 sailors were shipwrecked 300 made it on to the beach and all but a handful survived and most of that made it back to spain. There has been contact between spain and the west coast of ireland for thousands of years to attribute the dark complexion of many irish people to one event is daft.in galway city there is an arch called the spanish arch where spanish and irish merchants would meet to trade and that went on for 100s of years
@@Joseph13163 Stop spud munchin an read a book 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@pepelemoko2820 Ah sure believe fairly tales if you want to i prefer history and logic. The vast majority of the sailors from the armada died there is no way they could have any significant genetic legacy just not possible.
They actually think the original irish who were pushed to West by wave and wave of settlers (vikings, Norman's etc) dark because they're native irish people who came.up during ice age from Spain
They did a program called blood of irish and found irish people in the west with dark features had some common ancestor genes with basque people

Catholics now outnumber protestants in northern ireland.the problem between catholic and protestant is not about religion as such its more about national and territorial allegiance.Generally protestants favour union with britain and consider themselves british, but not southern protestants nowadays though they would have been at one point.Protestants have lead rebellions against british rule and they are catholic unionists in Northern ireland.Protestant irish nationalists would be very rare though 90% support the union in Northern Ireland.
