In this video we react to a compilation of funny Irish Police moments. Also known as the Gardai or Garda, Irish Police seem to have a great sense of humor. We thought these clips were hilarious, except for the last one. This makes me want to learn more about policing in Ireland as it seems there are probably quite a few differences compared to the Police we're used to.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this reaction please give this video a thumbs up, share your thoughts in the comments and click the subscribe button to follow my journey to learn about my British and Irish ancestry.

In Ireland, there are three levels of legality. There's "Ah, you're doin' fine", there's "Don't push your luck" and there's "Oi, now you're takin' the piss" That's the level that you get arrested.

Same in England. I cant talk for the rest of UK. But I think they are all pretty much how they are in Ireland. I was in Belfast back in the early 90s and they were more serious, but back then it was understandable, due to the tension going on. I dont know if things have relaxed anymore now.

Same in some parts of England.
My hometown had a thing for a while between the police an all the bar doorstaff where people caught urinating in shop doorways or similar found a mop and bucket would materialise from the nearest bar and be handed to them by the police. Provided they cleaned up their mess there and then no further action was taken.
      It was actually very effective

30 years ago I was driving to a business meeting in the South of Dublin and I was comming from Belfast in the North. I became completely lost near central Dublin during morning rush hour and saw a gardai car stopped at the side of the road so I pulled over to ask directions. After several attempts to give me directions, each of which ended by the gard with " no that's too complicated" he finaly said "tell you what, just get in your car and follow us". Four miles later they slowed down and pointed to the building I was looking for and gave me a big wave.

I was on a packed public bus going nowhere fast due to traffic jam it was in Dublin. So the bus driver did a full comedy skit over the speaker system to keep us all entertained. Making fun of all the passers by and traffic mistakes along the way. The entire bus full of people were bent over laughing I had tears in my eyes. Students sing " we shall not, we shall not be moved.."
"Ah com'on now, if ye don't clear out there could be serious consequences!"
" we shall not, we shall not be moved.."
"Last warning, if ye don't clear the Aula in the next 10 minutes I'll start taking arrests"

Are Irish (and UK) police more or less `nice' and easy going? I think it boils down to the fact that they don't carry guns. Unarmed police have to develop good people skills and be capable, first and foremost, of defusing situations rather than go in mob-handed with force. Policing by consent makes for a more `easy going' approach.

I was on a girls weekend a few years ago in Dublin, we were rather tipsy when we saw a policeman directing traffic and we asked him if we could have a photograph taken with him. We were stunned when in the middle of the road he stopped the traffic in both directions put his arms round our shoulders let us get our picture and cross the road before he let the cars move again. We were impressed with all the police we came in contact with, nothing was too much trouble for them.

My uncle who would have been in his late 70's was out on a Saturday night, missed the last bus/taxi so got the Garda to drive him home. He was around 30kms from home so his local Garda met them half way, still a story he tells in the nursing home😂. They were so good to the elderly during lockdown, delivering groceries & medication. The same old boy thought lockdown was bs, so he went out in his tractor (no driving license, but can drive a tractor on main roads) 🙈. They had to stop him & send him home😂, then would look in on him regularly. As a Scot I am amazed how laid back they are.

A police officer drove me to a funeral so I wouldn't miss it when the suspension broke on my car and blew out a tire when I was on the motorway. The other officer stayed behind with my car awaiting breakdown to come and pick it up and insured it got delivered to a garage. That's in England.
I've never had any problems with police, always been friendly and understanding. Probably because I'm not a criminal intentionally doing something wrong. I got pulled over when my son forgot to put on his seatbelt and I hadn't noticed. I just apologised and got my son to put it on and was sent on my way. No ticket, no fine against me, he could have if he wanted but he just warned me. I agreed all was good.

But generally the garda are a decent bunch, usually they live in the community that they police, know the locals, drink in the pubs, kids go to the local schools etc. (I live in rural Ireland, city policing so could be very different) Garda seem to be slightly more about the "spirit" of the law as opposed to the letter of the law.

The Gardai (pronounced gardee) are usually fair, good humoured people as are most Irish people. My daughter was very sick and my wife was driving her to hospital for what would be severe kidney infection.
She was stopped by a guard near Cork city for speeding. When she told him our daughter was sick he told her to follow him and redlit her into the city sirens blazing and called into the hospital a day later to see how she was!!
If that's not great policing I don't know what is.
For a country the size of Ireland, 5 million people, the Gardai are well known worldwide and I've seen that they get forces worldwide sending people to learn from them.
I'm not a guard but a chef, I'm just praising my police force! They get knocked sometimes and every barrell has a bad apple but overall they do a great tough job!

Irish and also UK Police have a mandate based on crime prevention (where possible), and also to serve the public. There was a saying when I was young; If you want to know the time, ask a policeman. These days you can still ask for help in any form, and they will generally help you where possible, or at least direct you to where you can get that help. Of course, they also come in for a lot of stick, but anyone that has lived in other countries will appreciate how helpful and friendly they are. It is policy to be part of the community and not just controlling it. On the grammar/pronunciation.... It's 1 Garda (gar-da), and 2 or more Gardai (gar-dee), the Irish just tend to call them guards, but it actually means guardians.

I think that the Gardai seem to be like the UK police in that they look for the best rout to co-operation. If something serious is going down, then their response will be swift and firm, but if they just want someone to comply with the law, often the best way is to engage them in banter, and then advise them on what to do going forward.
Obviouly there are issues with community relations in some areas, and sadly not all cops are a credit to the service.....but this is what most of us see day-to-day in the UK, and even more so in Ireland.

Garda are not always so chill, V like US police, some are on a power trip, though thankfully without firearms for random cops.
Ive personally only had minor and mixed experiences with them and 99.9% of those is just passing them on the street. But
I once saw(I was across the road working, not drinking or anything) 8 Garda sprint into a slight altercation outside a club and start whaling on everyone with the old iron-wood battons even though there was only 2 boys throwing hands at each other at all and at that I think there were only a few punches thrown at all. 3 concussions, a broken arm, lots of sore heads and 3 ambulances later, they arrested 2 poeple not even involved untill they were bowled over by the garda charge..
So no.. deff not all this chill
There are also many cases of harrasment for petty reasons and such.
A Garda who cracked open protestors heads with a batton, found not guilty, others not chrged at all (3 protesters injured) and the ones who had battons had removed their ID from their uniforms before they went at it... Is currently a member of the "Expert Advisory Board to the Code of Ethics and Cultural Adjustment Steering Committee in An Garda Síochána"
    So yea... chill🤐
We (my mother) used to have terrible trouble with rowdy students living in the house joined(Semi-detached houses)..
3 years of calling the Garda every other weekend when they had escalated to running up and down the stairs banging brushes off the walls(just partition dry-wall) to go with the loud music and people to be told "there is nothing we can do but tell them to keep it down"
1 Garda eventually did his job and laid out exactly what he could and would do if my mother had to call him again (not the general number) after over 100 call outs, 1 did his job. No problems since.
"Tend to give you the benefit of the doubt"
I also have friends who have been constantly hounded by them for stuff their older brother or uncle or close friend did and have moved away decades ago. 1 still gets pulled far more often than anyone else I know and he's not a bad guy, doesn't drink drive or do drugs or nout. Just related to someone the gards hate cos they could never catch in his petty crimes(smuggling some "luxury" items before the open border, no car tax etc.. minor stuff really)
Then there are the folk they let off, like the "businessman" (who got his money from the most unsavory of sources) burned down the historic building(pub) he owned because it was too small for what he wanted to make it and he couldn't get planning permission for alterations/additions.. Garda stopped him speeding from one village to the next town as the fire-brigade were going past him.. You could see the smoke from where they stopped him (and by accounts he was FLYING on a 50mph limit doing 80+) they let him go, not even a ticket at that speed (30% over the limit is almost automatically going to be a dangerous driving charge in most cases)
All that being said.. Not all are that way, not by any means but it often feels like it's a 50/50 whether you'll get a smile or a scowl for even saying hello.
(And this is rural NW Ireland, not even Dublin or Galway or Cork or Limerick)
It's not an easy job at the end of the day.. And it comes with alot of prejudice against them too and you never know what their last call or interaction was like. (as with anyone)
    /edit
(sorry that turned into a bit of a wall of text)

My tax disc was expired and I was stopped with my little daughter in the car. She asked me if he was a real policeman and I said yes. She then asked if he was looking for bad guys. I started to giggle nervously and say yes, he is a good guy and he is just there to look for bad guys and keep us safe. (Wondering how the heck I was going to explain this!)
The Guard told my daughter that she has a wonderful mummy and I was going to get a new sticker for my car and waved me through with a wink. MY HERO!!!

It's sad to see this from England because we used to have community policing like this... Now we have officers with the word community on their backs, but they're hostile, confrontational and overtly obstructive.
What you're seeing here is true community policing from officers that still have a connection to the public. Again something we used to have in England a few decades ago. But it's become adversarial and all collaboration has ceased as you are assumed to be a criminal until you prove you aren't.

Now there's nothing but the uniform, and that's now a military grade spab proof vest and Taser they're all to quickly ready to threaten you with... The more points you have the higher your insurance & maximum points allowed is 12 in 3 years then you get a driving ban.
