    OMG...thank you for your honesty! It's refreshing. I've watched a lot of youtube videos about living in China and I rarely see one that has as much detailed info. I'll be moving to Fenghua Zheijiang Province to teach in January, so the more I learn about REAL life in China for an American the better.

      +Brittaney Delaney Thanks! I pretty much talk about everything that I was interested in knowing before I moved here. I want to visit Zheijiang Province so bad. The pearl region of China! You will have a great time, but remember each area in China is like living in a completely different country on its own. Even here in Beijing. I will be moving into a new apartment this weekend So I will do a video showing what a traditional Hutong house looks like.

    I a Taiwanese and a long time USA resident. Long time means about your age times 2. I am on the left coast. About 35 years ago I went to East coast, such as New York, I was warned how strange, how dangerous, etc by a long time American New Yorker. Mostly negative. I went, it was everything he said plus a lot more. Strange as it may sound, I actually love the place. I got use to it and had a wonderful time.

    How long did you stay in China for teaching? Are you still teaching in China, or did you move onto other things? Asking as a Canadian girl interested in moving to China to teach English but to also learn Mandarin. Did you feel safe in your time there/ so far? I've read articles that state that it's a high risk place in the world to live.

      I have never felt safer in any other country, not even in the US. I am currently considering relocating back to the US and am terrified with all of the mass shootings. We don't have to worry about that in China.

      Hopefully if you are looking for a real teaching job then you are qualified and can do it. For the basic TEFL teaching jobs, anyone can do it. You will never be in charge of a class and you will never be in a position to do harm. They have Chinese teachers who do the majority of actual teaching, you are just the one speaking English.

Academic English classes like Litt are properly handled by native Chinese. It all comes down to the 'Language of Instruction'.

    Great video. Thanks. I'm considering coming to China to teacher later this year and am just wondering whether to get a job before I go, with the flight and accommodation paid for or to just fly out and look for something on the ground. I should have enough saved to live without work for a while if needs be, I thought this might be better as I could check places out and find a good school/job rather than commit to a long contract only to find out I don't like the job / place at all. I'm probably going to avoid the bigger cities. If you have any advice on which of these options (find a job before or wit till I get there) to do I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Well, I really enjoyed your video and I wanted to ask you something related to what you were talking about because I am so interested to go there for making a living . Actually I am not a native English speaker , but I am studying to become an English teacher at the university and at the end of my major I have to sit for the FCE and CAE exams of the University of Cambridge , so I wanted to ask you if you think that I could have a chance to get a job as a teacher?. I will be so thankful if you can give me a piece of advice.

    The reason why everything is so cheap in China is because their minimum wage is very low. The average monthly income of a Chinese person is 6,000 yuan.

      I think it also depends a lot on where you eat, there are plenty of nicer restaurants in the tier 1 cities that will make you think Expensive on the level of any Western city, and then you can hit average places and even street food for far less. That was my experience there and in the phils.

    One more thing. You will notice people in public quarrelling with each other now and again. People will mind their own business and never get involved. If it's a foreigner quarrelling with a local, other people will get involved. A crowd of people will go against the foreigner. They will give blind support to whoever the chinese person is. If someone in china causes you grief, you can't win. Their national socialist pride is what it is. You are lower than everyone.
    One of my foreign friends from the UK tried to defend himself against a wallet thief and a crowd of locals from all angles started attacking him from all angles. Then they started stomping him and all shouted "this is china". My friend ended up in a hospital.
    This is the most important thing you have to know,before you come. If you cannot tolerate racial discrimination, you are not going to make it here.

    • @MyLifeAbroadChina
      @MyLifeAbroadChina  8 років тому

      +JohnConnor1985 While they do have a very us vs. them attitude here, typically if you find yourself in a situation like this you should make sure to not be shouting or saying anything negative about the Chinese or about China. The crowd will stand and watch and fully support the Chinese person no matter if he was wrong or not, but it only gets violent if you say something negative TYPICALLY. SerpentZA has a great video on this topic, you should check it out. I know a few foreigners who have been in fights with the locals and never made any slurs or negative comments about the Chinese during the altercation and people just watched and let it play out. It is also important to note that while what your friend experienced does happen, it is a very rare thing.

      WELLLL I grew up black in America. So far, nothing I've encountered in China is even gasp-worthy relative to the last 20+ years of life in America. I like to think I'm well versed enough not to be surprised the day I do have a bad experience here. It might even be bad enough to register on my give-a-damn, who knows.
      The only aspect of life it effects with annoying frequency is job hunting.. 2.5 months out of every couple years I deal with ghosting schools who were beside themselves with interest until they saw my picture. But that's only about 1 in 3 places you apply to. Good odds for any Greek, if you ask me as I only need 1 new job every couple of years and whoever passes up a quality professional like me, over a superficial detail like insufficient whiteness, is probably a joke of an institution and a bullet I should be thankful to have dodged, anyway.

    • @MyLifeAbroadChina

      +MaryMcFairyland It really all depends on your education and experience. Do you have a teaching degree, teaching license from your home state/country, and experience teaching both in your home country and abroad? If so, you can check www.ycis-hk.com/ or through a recruiter, I personally used New Life ESL newlifeesl.com/teach-english-in-china/?ref=MLA

      +MaryMcFairyland I used a friend who was an agent to find my school. The more experience you have teaching in China and in foreign countries, the more money you will make in tier 1 cities in China. What I make is not what you can make everywhere in China. I work in Beijing. Also training centers pay less than International kindergartens.

    this isn't supposed to be offensive, but what tactics do you use to teach if you can't speak their language? Maybe you could do some videos about teaching tips. (Because while you're teaching them your language, you're also learning their language, so it's gotta be much different then just the usual teaching subject.)

    • @EFenglishfirst.WorkAbroad
      @EFenglishfirst.WorkAbroad 7 років тому +3

      Hi Coke Bloke. This is a great question! The general tactic is to build from a small foundation using only English in the form target language and body language. For example, the student will know what a chair is, and they will be able to link it to a sound in Chinese. The English teacher can show a picture of a chair or even point at a chair and make the sound. The student can be asked to repeat the sound. From there you can build on this by sitting in the chair and making a sentence. As some students are good at copying, another good tactic would be to use concept checking questions. You can point at other pictures and items. If they say chair again, it is clear they are imitating, and they haven't made the link between the picture and sound. You can use body language to articulate that their answer is or isn't correct. Games and pictures are often introduced. This can make learning and teaching English much more fun.

As long as you are not involved in any stupid political circle, china people will welcome you more than anywhere in the world. I keep hearing people complaints about the low pay in china. of course, china cost of living is very low. most of the food and commodity is produced /locally grown. This saves huge money. Hey there!
    I have a few questions if you don't mind!
    You mentioned how China is very different in terms of ethics, morals and politics. So if I get this straight, I can expect some casual racism in China. Are there any other things?
    Is the food good? I'm a low-carb by heart and don't really eat any wheat or food that has a lot of sugar in it (sugar is the devil for me, lol). I'm eating like I'm a diabetic but I'm not. Are there any options? Or do Chinese restaurants sweeten the hell out of everything? Also, is meat of any good quality? I'm scared that they're not of Canadian or American quality (although I'm pretty sure they're not).
    Thanks! Lovely video :). Subscribed!

    • @MyLifeAbroadChina
      @MyLifeAbroadChina  7 років тому

      the food is great in some places and horrible in others. There are a ton of options in most major cities. Most Chinese food has sugar that you wouldn't realize. It's completely different to "chinese food" back home. The produce is cheaper and fresh, the meat just depends on where you get it. Most are sold in open air markets even in grocery stores. SO that takes a lot of getting used to, but overall it's worth it.

      Might as well. It's not really essential if all you want to do is make a load of money for speaking your native language and hangout in bars and other expat bubbles with other foreigners. That... seems to work out for some .. quite a lot of people here. There's folks who have been here over a decade and barely speak a word of Chinese.
      That.. doesn't really work out for me because I'm not a bar fly.. and, after a while being here, you quickly realize how much you can't access which, in as few words as possible, amounts to... a better deal overall in life.. if you can't speak or operate in Chinese.
      It's a gentle place to start in while not speaking a word of it when you first come.. and nobody's going to be pissed at you for not knowing or speaking any, regardless of how long you've been here, but when you get here.. you just aught to start learning it however slowly you can manage to pick it up.
      The reward for learning the local language is .. little things.. like being able to order from Chinese stores and restaurants and getting street food instead* of daily McDonald's or raiding the convenience stores for anything that's got English or is a western brand and spending 2-5 times as much on a regular basis.. or being able to go out and generally wipe your own ass in life, one task at a time at the supermarket, at the bank, in the phone store or the China Mobile shop.. without a coworker being dispatched to come help you by basically being your mouth for the day...

    So, a lot of people seem to beat around the bush in regards to working there without a degree. I do not have a degree, so is it legal to work as an English teacher in China? I spoke with a recruiter a while back and she basically said it isn't illegal, but it isn't legal either...confusing. She also stated that I can still get a work visa without a degree. Don't know how true that is. Problem is, I have two toddlers and a husband. If I can't get a work visa, what visa would the four of us need in order to stay?

    • @MyLifeAbroadChina
      @MyLifeAbroadChina  8 років тому

      It is illegal to work without a working visa and you can't get a working visa without a degree legally. Some agencies and schools will get you a z visa without a degree, but it isn't a real legal teaching visa. It will be a visa for a telephone management company or a school managers position, but you won't know what it is for usually.

    I really want to teach in China but I have facial and ear piercings as well as a visibly flower tattoo on my wrist. Will these be problems for me? I know piercings and tattoos tend to be taboos in Asia. Do you know any other teachers that have a similar problem?

      depending on the facial piercing, you may have to take it out during class or even while at work. the ears don't matter much, and tattoos just depends on the school. some schools don't mind, others do.

    Hi Joey. I am a professional ESL teacher. I have a Bachelor degree in English, a TESOL certificate, a partial teaching certification (PL2) to teach in the U.S., and I am graduating in May 2017 with my Master's degree in TESOL. I have a total of 4 years of teaching experience, one of which was spent teaching ESL in Thailand. Currently I am teaching argumentative writing at a university while I study for my M.A. degree, but I have also taught kindergarten through second grade in Thailand and 7th grade in the U.S. I am hoping to relocate to China after my graduation in May. What can I expect as far as monthly pay? Do you have any advice on finding the best jobs for my qualifications? I previously went through an agency called Xplore Asia when I was in Thailand and qualify for free job placement because of my affiliation with them, but would I be more likely to find better jobs independently or do you think it is better to find work through an agency?

    • @MyLifeAbroadChina
      @MyLifeAbroadChina  8 років тому

      It really depends, you would probably do much better applying directly with a legit international school. They would pay the best based on your experience and education. Look into the International School of Beijing, Yew Chung, Hyde Academy, or Harrow. They all have certified teachers and are real international schools. Pay will be pretty good around $3,000-$4,000 USD plus housing.

    • @kayseecarrere8642

      Okay. Thanks so much. I actually already applied to Harrow, but am not sure if they would be interested because I am only a partially certified teacher in the U.S. I am hoping that my master's degree would suffice in lieu of a full teaching certification, but I guess we'll have to see. Thanks for the advice!

    A few good points made here. I will make a few points of my own. If you are a foreigner living in China, know this. You will always be an outsider. You will never truly belong. While there are great things about living in china, in the long run the negativity will weigh down on you. I originally went thinking of myself like an immigrant with the hope of settling down there and immersing into their culture and society as well as learning the language. NOT GONNA HAPPEN. You may learn their culture and language, but you need to know that you will never be accepted. You will make a few friends here and there which is all well and good. But you will find that most people will keep you at arms length.
    You will have serious social limitations on you. People systematically discriminate against us. In your neighborhood, people will always watch you even if you don't do anything wrong. I like youtube user Alias1983's videos. In his video "teaching in china: things to consider before you come" he explains the top most i,portant things every foreigner should know.

    • @MyLifeAbroadChina
      @MyLifeAbroadChina  8 років тому +5

      +JohnConnor1985 I'm glad you are sharing your experience, but I have not found that to be the case here. I live in a fairly foreign saturated area, and the locals embrace it and are extremely helpful and friendly. I know there are some areas where there aren't many foreigners and you are looked at very strange and treated differently, but that has not been my experience at all.

    • @DarthABBA
      @DarthABBA 9 років тому +1

      how do people work in China work without a degree, I see ads for jobs where they say degrees aren't required and they'll get you the proper visa.

    • @MyLifeAbroadChina
      @MyLifeAbroadChina  9 років тому

      That's a difficult question. In short, if you do not have a degree one of two things will happen. 1. They will get you an business (M) visa. It is a good thing because then you are not tied to the school. You can leave ANYTIME you want without any major backlash, like canceling your visa. However, you are not legally allowed to work in China on an M visa. This is what will happen MOST of the time. 2. They will lie and fake a degree for you, which will get you more money technically (almost double), but they will keep that extra money each month. With the fake visa they will get you a working (Z) visa. This is good, because you don't have to spend the extra money EVERY 2-3 months on being forced to leave the country to renew your visa, like you would with the M visa. The bad side is, if you find out the school or agency is screwing you over, you can't quit without having your visa canceled and having to go to your home country and start all over.

I was offered 10000 yuan at the school the 14878 is the income I would make if I did not work at all. That would mean while on the job I would make 24878 a month. I am not really into nightclubs , casinos,and bars. I like to prepare my own meals and I am not very social. usually the people I like to hang around would be business professionals. lawyers, police, bankers, scientists, engineers, and government officials. China is the number 2 country I could see myself living in based on political alignment. Russia is number 1 , Belarus number 3 , Iran Number 4 .

I had to get the physical, leave the country to get my work visa, come back and register with the local police station, then go to immigration, and finally go to the local police station again. It was a very long and frustrating process, but it is finished.

      thanks for the answer but can give me any suggestion on how to get work visa easily

      you can find an agent and pay them to process your visa. It usually costs 15,000RMB but can range depending on your background and where your passport is from. Other than that, I don't really know any other way of getting a work visa.
      Sorry I can't be of more help.

    It is funny, living in Latin America, things doesn't sound that bad... I have been in the bank waiting for my turn for 5 hours, so I am so not shocked at all, traffic is awful here, so it seems I could get used to it.

      My Life Abroad: China for the bank thing, actually we dont go to bank often. i dont know if you use alipay. for this time, more and more people are paying by phone. i donno how the school pay you, in rmb or usd? if you want cash, you can use ATM. if you need to send money home, try online payment, westernunion or even paypal. fast and easy.

    you have mentioned too much disadvantages of living in china, but the only advantage is to save money. i guess that is all what you need for your life, china is a country which is totally different from states, so no reason to compare. no matter how bad china is , no one is forcing you to stay , no one is forcing you to be there. that is your own choice ,then show your respect to the land that provides you a job

      you must be a local. I love living in China. There are many things that are difficult and insane about life here, especially coming from one of the major world leading countries, part of my job as a youtuber is to show the good, the bad, and the ugly. If you don't like what you see here, please move on. Thanks for the view!

    You have a lot of criticism why still staying in China? You should come back to united state. Whoever dislike China they shouldn't teach English in china.
