    Wow, another great video! Thanks for this Joey. It's great to see how a demo lesson and interview is conducted. I'm currently doing my TEFL course and completed the classroom portion of it a couple of weeks ago. What we were practising is exactly what you were doing in your video so it's good to know that I've got a basic understanding of what I should do for the interview :) Cheers dude!

    Well done and thank you for your videos. I am learning a lot. Do you have to demo lessons for all your interviews and all type of grades? I studied B.Ed. intermediate and senior phase and wondered how a demo lesson would work when the work becomes a bit more complicated. Got any examples or links?

    • @MyLifeAbroadChina
      @MyLifeAbroadChina  8 років тому

      You will always have to do demos and they will change according to the level. The best advice is to find a fun activity for the older kids. Maybe something with magnets or make paper boats and do a lesson on sinking/ floating, or on measurements. It really just depends on the level.

    Great video! This is just the right way to communicate with young pupils, funny face, using parts of your body and small games. By the way, agent Zhang is not recommended by teachers from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. Huge commissions and bad contracts.

    I teach for two major Chinese online ESL companies. A good portion of this video is basically what my bedroom sounds like from 4-9 AM every weekday morning, and all night on the weekends. He even does his delivery in the same tone as me. This was hilarious. Well, at least I know I'm doing my job.
    And shit, while I'm here, commenting: I recently reached the point where I make enough money teaching English online in order to live and travel in less expensive parts of the world. It has been exactly 3 months since I began heavily researching online ESL teaching and sending out applications like crazy. Dadaabc hired me and got me on payroll ultra fast, which is how this ball got rolling. I requested maximum hours from them, and jumped at every overtime opportunity, because my savings were getting too low, and the idea of running out of money in Medellin, Colombia, lit a fire under my ass. Then soon thereafter I got approved to teach for Cambly, which is not good pay, but IS a guaranteed drip-drip of day to day spending money in South America, via PayPal, and you can log on and clock hours literally 24/7, and you have no bosses, really. (Just earlier tonight I got paid 6 dollars for talking to an indescribably intelligent, and wealthy, 15 year old girl in Saudi Arabia for 30 minutes on Cambly, a genuinely cool and fascinating conversation that I ALMOST felt bad about making moey off of. 6 dollars equals 3 full meals at a decent restaurant in a good neighborhood here in Medellin, i.e., a day's worth of meals from one truly casual chat). And finally, I recently got into another one of my top choices for Chinese sites, and set that schedule for my weekends, Friday and Saturday all nighters, which equates to Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons in Beijing. With all three of those rocking at the same time, I'm at around 35 hours per week, and enough income to finally do the digital nomad thing. You basically have to obsess over ESL research, articles, and videos like this, and whip up a killer CV, and prepare your ass off for interviews. I also have a master's degree, and an online TEFL certificate, so admittedly, those two things have probably helped. Another thing: be prepared to have strategies in place in case your internet goes out at any point. These Chinese companies have 0 mercy on you if you have a technical problem. They will do some shit that seems illegal, like withold a quarter of your entire paycheck, if your internet is down for one working morning. But it's in the contracts. THey're brutal with that shit. I'm definitely buying a hotspot ASAP. ANd I'm even thinking about moving to Chiang Mai, Thailand, just because of all the coworking spaces they have there, which I believe would offer even more safety against the possibility of a power outage, or internet going out. Very quickly, I have learned that guaranteed, steady internet is everything in this game

    Great video thank you for that really helpful. I am due to have my first interview by the recruitment First Leap based in China next week. The second interview will be the teaching demo..do you think it would be best to ask salary questions after the teaching demo? Also one concern is time off. I have been told there are 11 national paid days but it appears that they work through summer. I have seen recently a job that has nearly two months paid time off between term. What would be the normal amount of time off for a year? I work in a college at the moment and I have 24 days leave. I want to make sure that I am doing the right things here I have looked through the company's details and it seems quite good. Otherwise I am more than excited to go to China and teach!

    Joeys demo tutorial is perfect. To be honest, my live Skype interview was pretty awkward and not well planned out. I hung an alphabet poster on my wall, but didn't know it was inverted for my interviewer. We both laughed about it and just ignored it lol. I sang the ABC song and had props like, Apples, Toys, Spoons and Cups. If you can show that you have the capability to communicate with kids, show enthusiasm and smile, your chances of passing the demo is high.
    BTW; I still haven't renegotiated my pay haha.

If I have some teaching experience and a Bachelors degree, soon to be awarded a Masters' (in June) from South Africa; salary wise, is it too much if I ask for 18k RMB + FREE housing (after tax). In your opinion, how much would you recommend I ask for? Company: EF. Thank you in advance.

    Hi there! I was trying to reach out to you via email, but haven't been able to yet! I'm interested in teaching in China without a bachelor's degree. I've been researching and the laws that are currently in place have me scared. I was promised a Z visa before even coming. I have two interviews with schools in Beijing, and in Anhui province (HuiaBei). It feels good to already have two 3 potential schools. I was offered 14K RMB and from what I hear that is not very much. Any advice you offer would be appreciated! I got recruited by Annette Thompson and the Agency is Big English Globe.

    I have a skype interview coming up. They have sent me some demo material. when i tried the demo on a friend through skype through screen share, they only could see the demo material but not the screen with my image. so in order for them to see me i had to turn off screen share. is this normal with skype? can i only do one at a time? They also asked me to match pictures with words.obviously i assume thats something the student should do... but cant seem to figure that out either! help!.. interview in 2 days!!

    how to do respond when the child does not respond and just stares at you?

    • @jasonharrington5200
      @jasonharrington5200 6 років тому

      As far as 1 on 1 goes: From my experience, and from watching many fellow ESL teachers in action, you basically just try to get the child to understand a few more times using TPR (body language), and if the kid still doesn't understand (for example: if the kid doesn't understand "Touch. Your. Nose," then you just say "OK!" and move on to something different. Worst case scenario, usually, you just have an entire session where you're pointing at things, saying their names, and then getting the kid to parrot that word back to you, and then saying a different word, repeat. Then go to whomever sent you that student and ask them what the fuck they were thinking, because he or she obviously needs a teacher who speaks Chinese too. But so far, even my lowest level students, ones who really should be back in a class with a teacher who can speak Mandarin, can answer things like, "Is. This. Color. Red, or blue? Red, or blue?" So there's a sliver to work with, sort of.

    Hello , Nice video very informative, did you mentioned 16,000 RMB with a degreee , can you please be expecific the equivalent of American currency? Also what places do you recommend, in the event you need to bring your child.? Hope to hear from you .Thank You !!

    • @MyLifeAbroadChina
      @MyLifeAbroadChina  8 років тому

      The US equivalent changes according to what the conversion rate is. You would have to check google, but it is between $2,000-$3,000 USD. It just depends on your native language, your passport, where you teach, your experience, and a few other factors. A few schools pay way more than that for qualified teachers. It just depends. Some schools offer free tuition for foreign teachers students.

    hi joe i recently got an interview with BEST LEARNING and im really nervous the only pros i have hear is the money is good but they have had problems with visa etc. My question is
    Should I be worried about getting the visa?
    What amount of RMB should I be expecting?
    What have you heard about BEST learning?
    Will they stick to their word, (for example i was told that i will be reimbursed for my flights at the end of the contract. will this be so or will i have to fight for my rights)?
    FYI
    I have a masters degree.
    I am from the uk.
    I have been china recently just for leisure purposes

    • @MyLifeAbroadChina
      @MyLifeAbroadChina  8 років тому

      If you have a masters degree and are from the UK, you should get a job teaching at a kindergarten or public school. The pay will be much better than Best Learning. The visa process will be easy since you have a degree and are a native speaker. They do provide airfare reimbursement, but you have to be on top of it and apply for it, they will not just offer it.
