Totally agree with the end rant. If you commit to a tournament, you face who you face. If you want to bow out, bow out of the whole thing. Or take a harsh penalty like your next 5 matches are all losses. Outfit wars are supposed to be team inspired events where you show your mettle, not an advertisement platform to boost your member numbers. That would be the only thing I could see as the reason to join up but want to skip matches just because you feel the other team is better. In life you win some and you loose some. Use it as a chance to grow if you think your outfit isn't that good. Next time you might just be the one that is the favored to win.

I just hear them saying "I decided to participate in an international competition and am unhappy that I was beaten by some of the best in the WORLD." Yes that is how True Competitive works, you want fun and less cut throat that is what live servers are for... Casual to semi competitive play.

I just came back to planetside in full a few weeks ago after having played some server smash and lane smash back in the day, and the fact that some outfits want to skip hard matches disgust me. I relish getting my ass handed to me by someone more skilled than me. I can learn where I can improve that way. Let's be real, this entire game is about getting your ass handed to you for stupid reasons, skill gap is one we rarely get to see in full, let's not ruin it

I appreciate that rant at the end. It makes total sense. If I was on a team and our challenger just didn't show up, I would hate that cause we didn't actually prove ourselves and skills, which is what OW is sort of about. 13:25 Wdym it sounds harsh? Thats basically whats normally happening to Competitors that just dont show up because they dont feel like it. Its just griefing other players if you do it, which is a reportable offense in the terms of conduct so 100% justified to boot these outfits out of the competition. And it even already happened somewhat like that in Planetside. Best example is this years lanesmash where one team just pulled ants and stopped playing after they´ve lost the first round.
Also its pretty interesting to see all the hot takes on reddit. Really shows the amount of dislike for anything competitive, skillbased and not casual. Its a sandbox game, everyone can do whatever he chooses to do thats not violating TOS. This includes anything from "turning PS2 into an arena shooter" to just building bases and of course also 1v1s or 1v1v1s in outfit wars and you shouldnt hate people for doing that, or grief them.

Cami, Thank you for calling out the BS opinion on dipping from hard match ups. That sentiment has been on the rise and is something I think is truly detrimental to PS2 culture which already is slanted towards disliking good players by and large. If you don't want to get rolled by people who put in time and effort to practice and gain proficiency, then practice or don't compete.

That is REMARKABLY embarrassing to proudly and openly say you'll just quit if someone's better than you in OW lmaooo. Im not a comp ps2 player but yikes, imagine signing up for a comp match then bailing cause you don't want to go against comp players. What makes it worse is that you know they're just going to blame the dev team for trying to enforce fair, even, fights.

I admit, last OW, I only took part one match just to get the knife. I wanted others to explore OW because playing the game so long, I prefer playing Casual/Chill mode, though I still can swap it up to Sweaty.
Whenever I find a Sweaty Plat Live, then sure I'll go Sweaty too, it's much more thrilling to take part in that fast rolling ball on the frontlines, and I think most community knows, it's hard to be Sweaty where likely most folks just want to Power Down for the day or are actually New Players. I stopped straining my brain to like do Sweaty things around such folks and just played along with em.

I'm not that deep into the planetside 2 community despite having an account for almost 10 years. I have a couple thoughts on this.
First off, the inherent design of planetside 2 is not meant to be competitive, so I don't think the matches will be that enjoyable to watch. Unless we are able to get first person views of actual players in the game, but birds eye view it looks funny to me. But if this is what the community wants, so be it and good for the devs are at least trying.
I personally believe outfits should have the ability to forfeit matches. That's just a natural ability you have in any competitive game. You shouldn't be forced to do anything as an individual. There are two ways of going about this that I feel are valid:
1: Forfeit well in advance of the match. Allow a time slot of like an hour for each team to make the decision to either fight or bow out so the other team can advance. This has practical reasons as well. There are plenty of small outfits out there who don't have players sitting on call to take empty spots. What if a team isn't able to complete fill out roster spots they thought they could when originally signing up? Life happens lol. The other team is able to advance to the next round and doesn't have to waste time sitting in an empty lobby. [Edit: I'm reading the notes and it says matches are scheduled days in advance. If you forefit your match at least 24 hours prior to the start time, that should be allowed. I'd love to see someone's argument against this. Feel free to call them cowards all you want, and maybe some are. It should still be allowed, cause someone may have a legitimate reason to not be able to participate due to real world situations.]
2: If 10 minutes into the game it's clear that one team is going to literally dominate the other, the bad team should be allowed to throw in the towel. Again, a BASIC option in every other competitive game out there. Could you imagine a boxing match or ufc fight where the refs never waved off the fight and just let one guy beat an unconscious man to death till the clock runs out? No one wants to see that.
What I do not support is greefing, which would be like one team decides just to sit in their warpgate at the beginning of the match and not try or just disconnecting. That truly is a waste of everyone's time.
But the fact that nowhere in the dev notes they mentioned the ability to forfeit matches worries me. It should be a simple majority rules type of situation. If 75% of the team votes to forfeit. Game over. Literally every other competitive shooter I've played has this feature. If the devs can't get something that simple right, I don't see this event ending well. But it will make for a good reddit post to read through. I'll have my popcorn ready 🍿

I agree with the rant, but I do think that outfits should be able to more casually play that 1v1 mode if they so choose instead of it being reserved for these super competitive tournaments. Challenge another outfit, reserve a timeslot together, have your match on your own terms instead of having to be part of an event meant to be the best of the best just to do this gamemode- especially since participation in the game mode is probably one of the best methods of practicing the game mode.

I agree with the end, but I think it's unfair of Planetside 2 that only big outfits are allowed to join.
Our outfit has 3 events every week and on average we have 2 squads. Here and there some come back to the outfit, but also some go AFK or have more to do in RL.
We take care of our players and try to keep them on the ball so that we continue to play Planetside 2 in our club.
At the last Outfit Wars we could not participate because we are too small. Now we have even made the extra effort and made even more advertising for our outfit.
The same problem have many other outfit on Miller, as I got that with.
Even alliances did not come to stande, because often the fraction is an obstacle.
Now we try to participate as a "small" outfit in the tournament, even if only 5 people come to the game. But I just have to say "it's Planetside's own fault" we do everything we can to keep players in the game and try to train new players. But if after more than 2 years of development on Outfit Wars we are still not offered a reasonable possibility to participate, we just have to try!

  • @Fateherald

The sentiment is nice and all, and yes players shouldn’t dip because they don’t like the matchup, but outfit wars staunchly caters to just the infantry playstyle. It would be nice if vehicle oriented outfits could participate in their own way against said opposition without being completely discounted.
So far “outfit wars” just seem like “infantry wars”.

Banning an outfit if they miss too many matches is reasonable. However, I think there's something to be said in defence of the less skilled outfits as well. If you like the outfit wars format but you aren't skilled enough to compete, in the current format you can't realistically join. And yeah, I think the best option for those outfits would be to not join and complain to the devs instead of ruining the fun for others. But we shouldn't forget why it is that people do these things in the first place. If outfit wars had some kind of skill based matchmaking, this wouldn't be a problem.

  • @jungii
    @jungii 2 роки тому +1

based, it's okay to have things that focus more on one part of the playerbase or on one specific playstyle, BUT DONT FORCE IT ON EVERYONE, thats the problem with Oshur, not with OW tho, you're not forced to sign up, you're not forced to play, live servers are still going to be running while the tournament is going on. Thats why most of my friends logoff immediately when Oshur unlocks, we're infantry players, and while it is possible to play infantry on Oshur it is a 100% harder to keep up with the pace in terms of stats or just fun in general that we've had on any other continent...

IMO outfit wars should use an ELO system such as many online competitive games such as chess or League or Legends. ELO meants to match players (or outfits) against adversaries of a similar skill level based on how many wins - loses they have (do not mistake with win/lose ratio, ELO formula works around wins minus loses).
How can we implement this on PS2? each time there is an outfit war, outfits have a few days to sign up. Once inscriptions are closed, outfits are matched against the closest ELO adversary. Winners gain ELO points, losers lose ELO points. This system just works and every round played makes the matching system better and better as the best outfits get more points and are matched only against similar ELO outfits.
The ELO formula (is available on the wiki) works in such a way that super dominant outfits dont get as much ELO points if they are matched against an underdog outfit, and are heavly penalized if they lose.
With this system outfits could hop on - hop off outfit wars without needing to participate on long tournaments. Leagues or divisions could be created to recognize skill level of outfits (like gold, silver and bronze divisions) and give rewards based on that.
    Tournament format is moronic btw.
I would even allow matches between outfits of the same faction just for balance porposes.

To devil's advocate the rant position some ... I'd counter that there is in fact a difference between creating game content which generally caters towards different portions of the game sandbox (Oshur), versus creating game content which operates to the absolute exclusion of anything other than what it caters to (competitive tournament in an ostensibly casual game). The players not interested in a hardcore ultra-competitive environment have absolutely nothing while using the Oshur example, the continent at least attempts to provide something for everyone (whether it succeeds is a different debate entirely).
There are also select outfits in the game who are extremely tryhard, to the point of being in a league of their own. If that's how they want to have fun, that's perfectly fine, but when it comes to outfit wars it will inevitably create a situation where you have two distinct classes of participants where only one of them has any meaningful shot at winning and matches which mix these two classes really won't hold much competitive integrity since the victor is practically a foregone conclusion. To name names, Recursion is pretty much going to wipe the floor with most people they face. Outside of a similarly ultra-hardcore outfit, that will not be a fun match to play and it remains to be seen if it is a fun match to even watch.
Planetside is at its core not a competitive game, and in playing devil's advocate I will assert that the pushback against trying to shove a square peg into a round hole is not entirely meritless.

What exactly can the devs do to punnish the "no-shows"? Banning them from anymore matches is just going to fuck the schedule for everyone else. Banning them from future events doesnt do much either since OWs are so few and far between they can just make a new outfit like Pigs on emerald.

Okay so it sounds like some people are looking for a competitive experience but not a tournament. Because the, "I would like to play against teams that are my skill level" is a completely understandable sentiment. So there's a problem created where players want a competitive experience but the tournament style doesn't sort teams into brackets. It sounds like these people are after a league or seasonal system that will put them up against comparable teams and a tournament without any sign-up requirements/restrictions (at least it sounds like that's the case) just isn't the structured competition people are looking for. They want "ranked" play but a tournament is not that.

My primary concern is that the format will evolve into Lanesmash 2, Daybreak Boogaloo. Aside from that though, 100% agree. If you don't want to play an opponent, go home. Last season P1NK and HMRD didn't dip mid match just because one only fielded half a platoon and the other ended up getting bodied by RALI, they played it out (and have my respect for such). Outfit Wars is first and foremost a competition, and if you don't think or at the least won't try to win, you should skip the sign-ups.

have no beef in the game, so dont come at me with the coping rant. I'm just throwing out ideas. The problem with the end rants logic that if there is such a problem with particular elite fits. Well the deal is those elite fits have already stacked the playing field before the game started. They are possibly gobbling up all the attention and participation of elite players from other possible outfits. Fine yes, if you don't want to participate with elite fits then dont sign up.
The problem being is two things. At that point only this will only serve a few outfits. The second problem, a mode should not be serving only a few groups of the whole base. You may argue that this is how competitions are irl. No. No they are not. They are plenty of groups and are far more open sourced. The reason this is different is due to the admittedly very well done social nature of ps2. It is simply too easy for all good players to get scooped up and taken away and the end result being only a few outfits left to be prepared. While in brawl tournaments you dont have that deal. Everyone who's looking to do something is coming and the cards aren't stacked from the get go.
i do have a personal disagreement with the equivocation of oshur being only useful for one certain playstyle. However, I'd rather posit the relevant the argument. One other personal disagreement that i left out was the point of putting on a good show for the audience. I'm simply going to put that video game competitions should be for the players and not the audience.

Here a probably unpopular opinion on this channel: Outfit Wars is goddamn horrible organised - And all this drama could have been prevented with 1 single feature ... skill brackets.
First, yes, if you sign up, you should show up. Full stop, no buts about that.
BUT outfit wars itself is flawed. It is marketed as a kind of "community event" that is open and accessible for everyone, but it isn't. Really, unless you are in one of the stack/skill/elite outfits, your chance to win is definitly less than 10%. Outfit wars isn't fair. Just like the LoL world championship wouldn't be fair if simply anyone could join. Having a low skill outift fight against the best outfit isn't fair nor is it fun, it's like sending 14 year old Timmy into a boxing match against Mike Tyson.
To be fair Outfit Wars would need participants of similar skill level, so either skill brackets or a minimum average skill to be allowed to join. And at the end, it isn't fun for anyone if someone just gives up, but it's also no fun for anyone to have a match that's just 1 side steamrolling the other. Instead we now have 2 sides beating each other up verbally on the internet, while i'm eating popcorn from the sideline and watching this absolute dumpsterfire of a discussion.

I agree. I think if you pledge to participate then you should participate it's an integrity issue. However, personally I would like to see larger outfits allowed to bring everyone they want. It seems to be arbitrary to me to limit at 48. I just think that if it is a measure of outfit's strength it should be a full measure of the entirety of that power. That being said, when we agree to participate we agree to the rules as written.

Fair enough, but here's the thing: in ALL bracket tournaments, those eliminated early by the champion team/person cannot be placed as necessarily bad. As far as the results say, every loser to the champion could be as good as second place.

@@CAMIKAZE78 Giving you 2 other supporting arguments:
I replied to Zealous about it too. An e-sports bar in my area streams kinda whatever they want. I told them about OW and they may stream it, if there's casting on UA-cam. Unnecessary delays from people not showing up will drastically decrease audience retention, and thusly make people less likely to want to try out Planetside 2.
Related point, not showing up is an opportunity cost to: the other players, some of your own players, anyone who didn't make the OW cut, casters, future PS2 players, and devs (kinda). I did a very rough estimate, and not fighting 5 outfits costs, at minimum/lower average, ~$8,000 total.
      Formula is:
      48*5 = 240,
      240*(total missed work ours, I assumed 3 on avg) = 720.
      720*(minimum wage) = at least $7,200.
Over $1,000 in players' opportunity cost per bail.
