One of the main things that I remember that kept me on edge was just the fact that in any hallway and any room you could be attacked. There was no safe place. I remember having my plasma cutter out and aiming before I ever entered or crossed through a doorway into any space. Even if I had already cleared that room and was going back through it. The tension and fear of no matter where you are on this ship you weren't ever safe was palpable. Especially in later sections of the game.
Fun fact, in the "Making of Dead Space" video, Glen jokes that the initial pitch for Dead space was that it would be called "Rancid Moon" and would take place in a prison on a distant moon. EA didnt like the idea of the prison setting, so the team came up with the ship, and lore ideas. Clearly Glen never let go of the idea. Also, the part at 1:57:10.... the part about the loud noise and flashing lights was created by recording the BART in San Francisco.
I use the map all the time. It’s a great map for navigating the 3D space. The only time I’ve had issues with it was in Chapter 4. The centre of that level, and thus that map, was in the middle of nowhere, and because you can’t pan the camera, while it was possible, it was extremely unintuitive to tumble the map in such a way to see the extremities of the level in the detail that I needed. Otherwise, it’s great, I probably use the map to find my way more than the Turn by Turn navigation.
They talked about the Bioshock influence at the end, but I'm surprised nobody mentioned System Shock 2. This game basically feels like Resident Evil 4 meets System Shock 2 to me (with a dash of Half Life 2). It's on a space station for crying out loud!
Deadspace literally made me scream while playing by myself at points... but I absolutely loved going through that resident evil in space vibe. I just wont play it again until the remake or remaster.
I'm actually preferring a remake of Dead Space over Dead Space 4, because I don't trust them to make a good Dead Space 4. They can fuck up a remake too obviously, but it has a great foundation already at least. Also, I can't wait to see these environments with Frostbite and the updated gameplay features and yes, I do hope Isaac talks I hate mute main characters in story heavy games, it just looks dumb. But I kinda think they might be to scared of backlash if they do it. Although maybe people would be ok with it because they know it works since the sequels exist.
A trick I've learned about some 3rd person shooters, is that you should shoot AS you're getting close to your target. Not wait until the reticle gets to its target, this made the asteroid segment tense and not frustrating. Never had an issue with it.
The thing that struck me most about the credits system is how analogous it is to corporate towns where instead of being payed in their countries currency, they were payed in corporate tokens and had to buy all their tools from company stores.
I was listening you guys talk about Dead Space as I was cleaning and fixing old Gameboys and made me excited to play the game again. I played only the first game but 2 twice so far, I have a copy of 2 and 3 but only tested the disks as I bought them used so only played for half an hour at most. I beat 1 back in 2009 I believe on PC, I remember I was trying to get through a breakup and this game was my distraction, and I played it again in 2019 or 2020 on PS3 and both time it was a blast! It must have been tough to come up with ideas for it, like what to use and what not to use, how to build certain mechanics and the world but looking back I wouldn't change a thing, it's perfect as is. I too really like the sound work, everything is meaningful and heavy, the vacuum sound is amazing, you basically hear stuff by your suit is conducting the vibration of things. And I LOVE the sound of the bench opening, I just imagine heavy gears turning that could rip off any of your bodyparts if you'd touch it while it's in operation, so heavy.
Colin the Salmon is the actor from Resident Evil that gets diced. Peter Mensah is the voice in Dead Space, he was also the messenger who ends up in the pit in 300. Both those guys are bald, so maybe it isn't only devs who can't do black hair.
This is great info. Thanks! I also saw similarity between the security guy and the RE actor, but I can also see the 300 actor in him, too. It's interesting how they transferred actor likeness into these older titles.
Playing the game again because of the deepest dive. I think this game is a true timeless classic. Not a truly scary game but so full of atmosphere and incredible world building. It's like if the Alien franchise skipped Alien and went straight to Aliens. Now I'm on a mission to complete the whole series on my new Series S. Thanks Gamepass
I love Dead Space 1 & 2 (I never played the 3rd one). I think I’ve played 1 at least 6 times from beginning to end since it came out. Great discussion!
Hey just so you know, admitting to playing the game before the release date is admitting you committed copyright infringement. I worked at Movie Gallery in 06 to 09 and while the COMPANY said we were to prescreen titles, the legality of this only applies to movies. As the movies release on tuesday, and games release(d) on friday (this was a worldwide thing and still may be) we would get the movies AND games on sunday of the previous week, giving what we thought was 5 days to prescreen games. It was only afterwards I found out that game companies do NOT give stores permission for this, in fact contractually they were supposed to PREVENT the gamers from opening and playing the title before the actual hard release date. Anything else was violation of copyright process. If you invited friends to play you were violating it even harder. Unless you had individual permission, you were not covered legally by the company to play games early, as game devs are way more stringent on spoilers than movie people. So yeah, just a warning for the future, playing a game before the release date is violating the copyright terms. Don't forget Sony was going to try to make it so each title had to be purchased per console unit (EG putting a game in your console would serialize that title to your console and make it unplayable on any other console on earth) which they have basically done with digital copies anyways (try loaning your buddy your game now lol)😅 Not trying to start anything, just spreading knowledge I obtained much later myself. If the release date is friday (with games) nobody but priveledged consent individuals are supposed to play them, and game stores did NOT pay for that priviledge as its thousands of dollars extra per title. If you had youtubed yourself playing it before the release date they would have legal precedence to sue.
DS1 is best Plasma Cutter Only, rock the whole thing. After the first game, you can't play engineer anymore. I'll never have another experience like the first game. I destroyed that game even on highest difficulty. 2nd one was a game, game, though. Didn't even have a hint of desire for what they were asking to achieve on higher difficulties. I know a lot of people say that the second is their fav, but I would challenge any of them to decide which to remove if one had to be eliminated, and the original not remain standing.
Understandable. I couldn't make it past the door after you get the plasma cutter until I set the vsync on in the game and the refresh at 60fps. Took around an hour to get past that damn door. It has been mostly fine since then, thankfully, but I'm making a ton of save files just in case things go sideways again.

Alien 3 killed sci-fi prisons for me forever. It's gross, but not in a good way.

The scheduling would be tough for that though considering how challenging just one boss can be.

Yes, it is like a bad delay, like he is 2 time zones away
