One of my favorite little touches are when you're on the train and going past multiple stops, you can see those other stations in the window. Really makes the ship feel grounded and real.
also how the stomp at the start is different from the stomp at the end. Isaac grunts and screams louder and more angry. A great detail in his deteriorating sanity.
John, I really appreciate you calling out solid sound design. It’s something that almost always gets completely overlooked. That sample you showed of the broken door slamming open and shut in that hallway was very impressive.
The "sound tracing" they mention is a part of Sony's hardware Tempest Audio. I wonder if that's what they've heard or it's a software version of it that's also available on PC and Xbox.
John is the GOAT for this, he discussed it in the Metroid Dread video as well! As a musician I love hearing about sound design, but of course even non-musicians/anyone can gain so much from thinking about the interplay between atmosphere, level design, and sound. Especially in horror games 👌
Alien isolation is another great example of PERFECT sound engineering to create an eery atmosphere. To this day it’s the only game/media to have me actually scared. No movie has even come close
And once again same problem that persist as long as there are 3d sound solutions - same sound from behing becomes much louder that looking directly at the sound source :( last time ive checked my ears are pointed slightly forward, not backward.
One of the most impressive things to me is how every object / body part persists throughout the whole game, it really makes you question if that body was where you left it when you backtrack through an area.
I was not entirely sure if it resets the objects, but you are right that is fking impressive and awesome. It's all those tiny that things that really make this thing a masterpiece so far for me. Had to buy it on Series X now too as I don't want to wait for a PS5 patch lol. I'd easily pay twice for that game anyway.
@@TheKingUpNorth Bodies and other items seem to disappear in some areas where environmental changes occur, but not all. I'm seeing some bodies/pieces lasting through multiple chapters, whereas others seem to disappear if the area saw some major changes for story reasons before I returned.
One of the greatest unsung strengths of the original was the ship itself. The Ishimura. It felt like an actual functional environment - the layout, the design, things actually made contextual sense. The remake has made that ship feel truly huge, it dwarfs the protagonist with monstrous engineering, all beautifully shown with some of the best lighting I've ever seen.
I absolutely love the seamless interconnectedness of the entire ship now. It reminds me a lot of exploring Arkane's Prey where that station also felt woven as a whole
@@michalthekind I don't think it's as demanding/badly optimized as The Callisto protocol though, I'm sure it can be run at 4K60 on slightly older cards.
I think it was an EA's 'testing the waters' effort to check if the genre still holds up. I hope it's universal critical praise and audiences' satisfaction makes EA consider DS2 or 3 Remake or even a Dead Space 4.
DS1 Remake is my first Dead Space game and the genre holds up, just started my new save plus and will then consider impossible mode. DS2 and DS3 Remakes need to happen!!
A remake of _Dead Space 3_ ? Are you joking? _Dead Space 3_ is what killed the series. It wasn't even markedly the same horror experience as in the first two games. It was atrocious.
And it’s also 15 years old and still looks amazing. I used to play it on my Xbox 360 late at night with no lights on and the volume turned up and it made me jump more than any other game though alien isolation was nearly on a par with it. I really want the remake but the price at the moment seems a bit excessive.
And he decided to showcase the console versions only. The PC, still scales to modern resolutions at 60fps. I played it at a friend's on a 360 back then, then I owned the PS3 version (my 360 had died) for a while, until I got to experience the PC version and kept that instead. 1080p 60fps with full Xbox 360 controller support and rumble, and all of the amazing sound. The difference in clarity was massive. On consoles, it ran at sub 720p and sometimes slightly lower than 30fps.
Yes! I noticed this too and found it very interesting! I remember seeing Isaac looking up at these tanks with floating bodies as I was walking around it. Really neat touch.
If you use a controller, the left stick for movement has a dead-zone near the centre where Isaac leans his body left right and forwards slightly without moving yet. This is used as a rly nice buffer for changing directions when transitioning into the different walking animations
I am playing it and I'm bored and Graphics is not was showed, it's aliasing again, flickering again like it's PS2 again. Callisto Protocol was and is better graphicly and it's new content this is already remembered path and where will it go next ? To Dead Space 2 , it's not for me. If you enjoy it that's great 😃👍
The immersion of seeing yourself from a floating external camera? How can that possibly be immersive? Unless you have a drone following you around in real life, and wear a video headset. Which would be weird.
The original might not have been scary to me, but that's because I played dozens of survival horror titles, the only franchise that truly scares the shit out of me is Fatal Frame. However, Dead Space tells a damn good story and the combat was extremely satisfying. Thus I thoroughly enjoyed the game, mainly because of how Isaac Clark is just an ordinary dude who was forced into a dangerous situation and did what he had to do to survive.
@@GMOTP5738 Acting like we wouldn't have gender-neutral bathrooms in 400 fucking years would just be bad worldbuilding lol. Also you can stop being the sort of person who gets upset at dumb shit like that any day you want.
It goes to show how well the original holds up despite showing its age in some areas. I loved the original and so far I'm being blown away again with this remake. Kudos to motive!
Stop supporting microtranscations and we'll get more top quality. Gen 7 and prior - pre-microtransactions scams and the Golden Age - game companies HAD to build quality like Dead Space to compete or they died. Customers won, deserving publishers/studios won. So many great titles from those times proves as such due to these remakes/remasters really only receiving graphic updates and some light story/level changes. Sadly microtransactions weaseled in and now we have 90% scams with occasional rare gem.
This looks (and sounds) like a properly developed release. Not a cheap cash grab, but a full-blooded proper remake of a classic that we enjoyed so much. Which is why I am perfectly happy to pay the asking price from EA. Fair wages for fair work. Take-Two, take note.
I’m pretty sure they have advance copies sent to them by the publishers most of the time. It’s the same way that lots of UA-camrs are able to crank out a full playthrough/movie of the game on launch day. That’s not to take away from DF’s work, of course. Still a ton of work involved to get these videos done.
@@LN.2233 well they're goal technically isn't to review the content of the game solely but the technical aspects so I don't hold that against them. But even with a week in advance, dev interviews they do sometimes for insight, recording footage, recording audio, examining and determining what's being done by the game, examples of that, a bit of history on the games, rendering. It's a lot hell maybe even more stuff I'm not thinking of.
@@LN.2233 Not sure if that's true for this video but they tend to mention when they beat a game or got pretty far in the videos. Since this is a remake of an original game it's very possible john didn't try to beat the entire thing, but if I remember right he did beat forspoken.
@@Tzero12 for me it was the sound design. they were doing really well aside from a few weird spots early on where sound would wrap around through hallways like the iconic headbanging guy, whereas in real life the reverberations of something like that would travel directly through to the player
For the console versions maybe it makes sense, but I really don't understand the title if it is about the PC. How is this a Best-in-Class when it is full of bugs, graphical problems, and stutters?
Ran fine for me, finished it yesterday 10900k, 4090 on a 65" oled at native 4k, only slight issue had to change the v-sync from default as it was causing incorrect frame pacing.
@@TheMaestro116 cutscenes can drop below 60 on my setup too, only slight stutter is when loading new areas which is not very often, been impressed with the port overall though as i expected i a right mess like calisto protocol.
Characters look quite a bit better, but in every other aspect the two are pretty even I'd say. Especially when the games get more hectic and intense, DS gains a lot of ground due to how interactive all the physics driven clutter in the environments is. CP's environments are entirely static. They also never ever open up. DS on the other hand has many moments of grand scale. I think DS loses out quite a bit due to the way its iq is achieved right now. It's a very clean but also quite soft looking game. It never really looks as sharp as its pixel metrics would suggest, and I feel this really undersells the quality of the character models in particular.
I own both and I just couldn't get into Calistro. It is gorgeous looking game by far, however it plays boring as shit and that is unfortunate considering it's pricetag. Basically playing a cinematic movie, which isn't a bad thing in itself as final fantasy does well in that department. If the gameplay wasn't so bland and the combat wasn't so awful it would actually be a good game!
@@JustFun-ho6qy OK, i didn't know most of the environment on CP is static. A physics driven environment is costly on cpus so i can see how that can affect image quality and their over reliance on VRS. In my persona opinion VRS is only good for VR games. Ps5 hardware does not support it natively which is why its software based and it seems like its not performing as well. I will eventually play both games once they are on sale or hopefully on game pass
One thing that has really stood out to me about this remake is the lighting. It might not feature the absolute cutting edge features like a full suite of RT effects, but the way Motive made use of the technology that is there is pretty remarkable. I have about 6 hours in the game currently and there were so many moments where I entered a new room and just stood there for a moment to admire the incredible work the studio put in to the atmosphere of this game. The audio engineering is top notch, but they have also done an incredible job at utilizing the Ishimura's architecture to frame rooms in such a way that the lighting has this very striking appearance at times. The volumetrics, the placement of light fixtures, and the occasional large machinery that's moving around and cascading large shadows over the entire room makes the Ishimura seem like it would have been unsettling to live and work on during even the best of its days before everything went to Hell. The original game obviously achieved the same thing with what it had back in the day, but this remake is on a whole other level thanks to the advancement in technology and Motive's competency in making use of it. I suspect that the remake will stand the test of time just as readily as the original has. Definitely one of the best remakes to come out in the past decade. I just hope the technical issues on PC get fixed soon. Someone already found a fix for the forced VRS, but there's also a significant problem with the frame rate getting cut by 20-30 FPS during cut scenes and getting stuck in the low 30s or worse for an indefinite amount of time, with the only solution being to save and reload. It's a very serious issue that really harms the quality of the experience, but I have yet to see any major reviewers mention it despite posts on Reddit and the Steam forums mentioning it.
The fact that numerous regular paying customers have reported these issues while the "reviewers/company salesmen" just "fail" to mention this isn't surprising. Kids who preorder and show desperation to purchase games on launch day are asking for it. Couple of months and this will get a good discount and qol/performance patches....but delayed gratification is alien for a vast majority of the gaming crowd.
At 24:20 the review gives a shoutout to the Callisto Protocol as having superior lighting. With new games using Unreal Engine 5 and lumen, games are going to look even better than Dead Space remake. The Frostbite engine just cannot compete...
Hope they'll remake 2, the sprawling district should be fun as hell if it was all seemless and open. They have roads, shopping malls, nursery, apartments, chapel.
Hopefully they do indeed make a Remake of Dead Space 2! (And if they also do one for Dead Space 3, they should really make some big changes in its story, possibly to set up Dead Space 4)
Remaking a masterpiece is nvr easy but DS1 is as much of a lay up as you can get. DS2 is also a worthy sequel but there is some more room for improvement but i would hope EA keeps this exact team at Motive together, i think they can do DS2 justice. DS3 needs a full rewrite imo, the Breathen Moon concept is peak Cosmic horror, but everything else about that game was awful.
I’m liking the game but I am experiencing a ton of stuttering on my Xbox Series X. I’m on Chapter 10 now but the constant stuttering when running around is very distracting.
Not really related to this video, but after all these years I really appreciate the vocal quality of these videos So many UA-cam videos have audio compressed to hell and it makes me so fatigued. This channel is so soothing and easy to listen to without losing clarity
It's very noticeable playing on ps5 that Clark is rendered at a low resolution in performance mode compared to other games, especially when you take an elevator and he gets backed up to a wall.
I played last night and everything looks great on performance mode. I tried the other mode and it was noticeably slower... slower than even youtube videos are showing (unless they are showing wrong footage).
Yeah because Oliver had to redo the entire video due to the patch. The Xbox patch did not arrive until late last week so he’s been working the weekend to finish it. It should be up early this week.
i could watch an entire walkthrough if it was presented like this (and yes, i know this would be way too time consuming for you guys😂). once again an awesomely detailed df video👍👍👍
Thanks for addressing audio again, we need more focus on this, I would love if you guys would do a segment on the best sounding games, both in soundtrack, ques/design and/or realism
I played the PS5 port day 1 and noticed that pixel dithering look. It’s much worse at certain times than others. At first I thought it was an effect of objects being seen through glass, like when you first approach the Ishimira, but it hit hard again while using an elevator. It’s distracting and hope they do resolve the issue.
Now its Better but when there are too many dead enemies in the area, It dips to 45-50 fps and It lasts until u reload. It happens too when an enemy spawns for a split second
John I appreaciate that everytime you pay attention to audio, not only visuals. For home theater users both audio&visuals makes top tier experience that makes everything more engaging, and your gear worth buying.
Just type in DEAD SPACE DEVELOPER or alike, or just go to the official Dead Space UA-cam channel, there are few videos of how they worked on it, the first video was over a year ago. In detail the show how it's been reworked/remastered/remade
The only thing that annoyed me was playing through all the stutters on PC. I turned off v sync and kept G sync on and that fixed 95% of them, but it was still noticable
@@noperoni08 In many games where stuttering is a serious problem, it can be very helpful to use the Nvidia graphics card in the Control Panel and 3D Settings -> Program Settings for the selected game, use Adaptiv half V-sync, especially if you have a 120/144 Hz display, then the frame rate will be locked on 60/72fps without any stuttering issue. But Adaptiv half V-sync is not available if you have g-sync enabled!
@@noperoni08 I didnt lock the frame rate. Luckily my g sync display was the only reason why it was smooth. It usually around 70-80 fps with dips into the semi occasional 40s with a rtx 2080. It wouldn't probably be the same without the display.
Thank you for bringing up the image quality on the PS5. Seeing so many people and Twitter saying that their game is running perfect was driving me crazy like, what?
I didn't know the PS5 version was borked glad I got it on the Xbox Series X. I mostly buy all my 3rd-party games on Xbox Series X unless they have multiplayer then I get it on PS5 to play with my friends but with Discord chat coming to PS5 and already on Xbox Series X any game that has cross-play I'll probably buy on Xbox Series X anyway seeing as how I'll still be able to play and chat with my friends regardless.
One thing interesting to mention in sound design is Isaac's heart beat and respiratory rate according to the tension he faces along the game, this works like an invisible bar that can sometimes predict when something can happen, I wonder if in the harder difficulties it can impact Isaacs abilities to aim .
or it just goes up after u run for a good bit. I hit a point in some areas where no enemy spawns (mostly) and im just running to clear out rooms tht werent accessible b4 due to security clearance. lol
@@Daigon95 Goldendeye back in the day did something similar when you run for a while , Bond gets tired and the aim becomes more difficult to keep steady, these subtle things that helps to add to the overall presentation of the game, I'm happy Motive studios took the time and effort to implement this
At the moment there is this weird animation for Isaac when walking slowly whilst the camera is slightly tilted towards the left: He starts walking like Frankie Quiñones aka. Creeper doing the "Creeper Walk", or alternatively looks a bit like a Gorilla walking on 2's... PS: Why does the new face model of Isaac look fairly similar to Kimi Räikkönnen?! 👀
Biggest takeaway here is that I’ve been pronouncing “Isaac” wrong for my entire life - apparently it’s “Eye Sack”… And he mentions the RE2 remake but OGs know the real remake GOAT is “Demon’s Souls”… masterclass
Completed this today having not played the original - an excellent sci-fi horror game and technically, I am incredibly impressed. Looks visually impressive, consistent, excellent lighting, and had in my playthrough practically zero glitches, no crashes. A very slick remake.
Very interesting to hear of the "Intensitiy director system". Reminds me of Left 4 Deads old "AI director". Smart way to add dynamism to a game with resorting to pure rng. Also surprisingly considering the scripted nature of the original game, really should help with replayability also.
Funny how absolutely no other reviews on UA-cam mention the poor shadow quality. I noticed it too and was wondering why noone was talking about.. but John...John has gamer eyes. just like us real gamers, he doesn't have blinders on. John is about the only gamer i can relate to on UA-cam
So much for 4K 60fps that both consoles promised, and this is just a remake. Such a shame. :O( Will developers ever try and fully utilize the capabilities of these machines, IF they can even really handle it? IMO, it's doubtful, as we've seen with other titles.
Rift Apart, Miles Morales, SpiderMan Are three Great examples all have 4k type image quality with their amazing TAA implementation all while running 85 to 90 fps average with Vrr enabled while running Ray Tracing Performance Mode and so based on what Insomniac devs have achieved We know these Machines Are highly capable systems which simply need devs to put forth maximum effort at optimization and We’d have a broad spectrum of amazing looking game’s!
@@technologylord4017 Yeah I think God Of War Ragnarok is the best I've ever seen on console, other than Uncharted 4 and Legacy. Microsoft, hmm, maybe AC Origins, or Odyssey, not much really. Sony definitely have the best Exclusives (graphically too), ever made. :)
@@technologylord4017 But all those games are made only for 1 console, so it's easier to optimize and also from Sony Studios, so they have every engineer for their games... Not a fair comparison. Even Callisto had Sony Studios MoCap and some engineers to help with the tech.
@@phlookode Yep very true, now if we can get everyone on board (on the same page) with these 3rd party titles we'll be good to go. I'm sure the developers for the Series S (with it's memory restraints) really hate making these titles, I still don't know that we NEED it. If Microsoft come out with anything "exclusive" its sure to be Gears, or Forza, which they may make look spectacular, but pale in comparison to Sony's titles. Unfortunately. Should be interesting to see what the future holds.
Also in retrospect I remember when 360 came out with Gears in 2006 pushing the console to it's limits. They had an article that said we've pushed (utilized) about 98% of what this console is capable of. And wow it showed. I wish they would do that now, maybe they will now Post-COVID and things get back to semi-normal.
There is so much detail in just the first 20 mins, before you even fix the tram. I beat the original a couple times and was sitting on this purchase but bro let me tell you. It's like a new game, pretty much! There is so much environmental detail and atmosphere that it makes it so you feel like you are there. Seeing Issac, Johnson, Hammond, and the crew face all detail with emotions, it fills in where your imagination could only due it's best to fill in the blanks. It's crazy. You can see lighting and shadows bounce of Issacs engineer suit and it looks absolutely amazing. Not to mention for Veteran players there are little Easter eggs you can pick up on real early. There is a empty dead end hallway in the first area after you split up with Hammond and Johnson, that has some small scribbles, and when you go by it you can sometimes hear whispering, which is the first sign of the marker this early in the game. Pretty cool little detail I bet alot of players missed.
Loving this remake... but am I the only one who dislikes Isaac's new physicality? How he walks, how he runs, how he aims. He seemed more self-confident in the original one.
I wonder what this means for the future of the generation. Will developers have to find another way to save on performance, or will every future game just look worse on PS5 because VRS as a performance saving tool will become more prevalent? If so, I feel like skipping hardware VRS on the PS5 might have been a short-sighted decision.
Looks like PS5 just got a hotfix that corrects the issues outlined in this video. I own both versions of the game, for PS5 and Series X, and they are far more comparable now than they were yesterday. Would love to see a followup to know what was changed and how each version stacks up after the change as it is not an insignificant update. I believe XBox also took an update as shadows look different in some sections I had noted over the weekend where lighting was different on the consoles. There is parity here now between the two so I am curious what got changed in both. But great video nonetheless. Sometimes timing is weird like that.
This to me feels like what we got with the Resident Evil 1 Remake. With resi 2 remake, they changed the camera and gameplay fundamentally, whereas REmake had similar gameplay, with changes, additions, and revamped graphics. Good job DF Team, and good job EA!
@@mdihero couldn’t disagree more, I want the TRUE dead space 2 experience now lol but dead space 3 hopefully we can just retry that one instead of remake it
@@tldrMac there was an issue where series s was left to run between 30 and 60 FPS. So very unstable. Which I believe is now fixed and locked to 30 on series s. Just curious as IGN did a console comparison.
The Dead Space engine was actually also derived from the one Redwood Shores previously used in _The Godfather,_ though from what I've been told they either gutted out or at least heavily modified RW to suit their needs.
yes it was godfather engine. the godfather pc and console game diffrent mybe 2nd god father remaked inself. its not clear this game uses that or not. its look nothing like it even godfather uses realitc faces this game weakest point was faces.
Thank you for covering the sound aspect! Absolutely wild the realism it adds when using headphones. I never had a jump scare in the original trilogy and I've gotten hit with every jump scare there is so far in the remake lol
I am so glad this turned out to be great. I am not very interested in trying Callisto Protocol, especially after the not so good reviews, but it kinda left an itch for survival horror sci fi that this remake will surely scratch. I really like that, unlike Callisto, this game really has dark and pitch black sections that will make great use of an OLED screen. I think something has been lost in recent years from over the shoulder slow pacing shooting games, RE2 remake got it right but Callisto and others have just missed the point, fortunately it looks like Dead Space Remake keeps the feeling intact.
I imagine this game would look unbelievable on an OLED considering my QNED is handling it EXTREMELY well!! Usually horror games and blacks in general take a lot of work on my end to get looking right without crazy dimming/clouding but with this game.... Oh boy you should've seen my face when I loaded it up for the first time. If it's THAT good on my budget tv...
Also while Callisto was definitely disappointing in some regards, it's still definitely worth checking out! If you go into it with no expectations and a general love for sci-fi survival horror you'll have a good time. A lot of the bad reviews were focused on the performance at launch but these issues have been ironed out. I've just wrapped up my 3rd playthrough of Callisto so I have some thoughts on the game you might find useful to determine whether or not to give it a try: Cons: - WAY too many vents, crawl spaces and ladders - Not enough enemy variety - Very oddly paced and simple narrative that had the potential for some Spec Ops: The line shenanigans but blew it - Very conventional weaponry and not much of it - Not very scary but I think this is just the reality of being a fan of survival horror. There are some great jump scares mind you! - GRP is severely overpowered and there are far too many 'spike walls' placed everywhere for no logical reason Pros: - The gameplay despite taking a bit to get used to is very tight and punchy. Tying the dodge/block inputs to directions on the left stick was something i hated at first but grew to love with time as it restricts you when fighting in an almost Resident Evil 1 kinda way - The voice acting and motion capture is incredible. Josh nailed the 'tough pilot guy thrust into chaos' shtick surprisingly well and Elias/Dani are also very 'real' in their presentation and performance - The animations are insane. From bopping heads to anxiously looking around you all the way down to the wrinkles of your shirt. I'm always seeing new little details I hadn't noticed before! - The graphics, lighting, atmosphere, ray tracing etc.. Gorgeous. Don't even bother with performance mode it makes the game look like an early xbox one release (bit harsh but not far off lol). Completely guts the vibe of the game. Besides its a slow paced game and I find with these newer games that look almost real like this, TLOU2, RDR2 work much better in 30fps with motion blur on as the games themselves are trying to emulate a more filmic look, and film is around 24-27 fps i believe. - The controller vibrations.. My god such a simple thing. I'm on Series X so I would imagine PS5 is the way to go with this game but even on Xbox the vibrations just feel so good. And they're used for everything. Navigating the main menu? Bzz. Taking a step? Bzz. Picking up loot? Bzz. You might think it's over the top but it's implemented so well and subtly that it just gives everything you do so much more weight which is something I see many games these days lacking.. A sense of weight and heaviness to your actions. While i'm having a blast with dead space I must say it doesn't feel like i'm in a heavy RIG like it did in the original but that's more to do with animations and sound design I think. - The world itself is really cool. It has some similar aesthetics to dead space but for the most part it's another cool take on a sci-fi landscape that is largely unique to itself. Sorry for the essay haha these games have just gotten me so pumped for the genre and it's potential and i'm very passionate about survival horror! There are tonnes more pros and cons to the game but I think i've written enough for now. If you have any specific questions about the game or about dead space remake i'd be happy to help out!
@@albertornsteinandsmough Thanks for taking the time to let me know your impressions with Callisto, you might just convinced me to give it a try, I will play it for sure, but to tell the truth I will wait for the price to drop.
@@Aristowi No worries dude. That's a fair call. The deluxe edition content is slowly coming out over the next 6 months so you'd be better off waiting for mid year sales and to see if the extra content is worth it to you. Is it just me, or is it only the horror games that get the best remakes out there? I will say this, whoever lead this project at Motive definitely plays Dead Space, and knew what they wanted to do.
Just played the first chapter on my Series S and while we dont have ray tracing or 60 fps the game is still breathtaking! Some of the best graphics and atmosphere i have seen. Well done Motive 👏🏻👏🏻
@Women should cook And clean unprompted I wouldn’t say that, the game looks almost just as good on series s than the other consoles The series s is for sure next gen they could get it to 60fps if the resolution is lowered to say 900p or so though then you will start to see the visual quality be not so good
@@dutchguy1807 ever considered why Series S can handle those next gen only games? The console is literally playing the games at 900p! Metro exodus was 512p! Wake up and stop defending it.
Frostbite didn't allow open world streaming data... Story of frostbite. EA forces it on a dev and each dev has to heavily modify it to do what they want. Good to see that EA Motive was able to get good results with it but many other EA devs had issues with it. Like Bioware with Mass Effect Andromeda and the facial animation.
Frostbite has always had really great audio capabilities, even going back as far as Battlefield Bad Company 2, I still remember the first time I set the audio to "war tapes" quality and I was shocked that I could hear the empty tank shell canisters rattling down the backside of my tank with deep, hollow clangs. The fact that the audio example at 11:37 sounds incredible even on a 2.1 speaker setup says a lot about how much further Frostbite's audio system has been refined over the years, as well as how much care the remake dev team taken into creating quality sound effects
Great review, John. I'm playing on Series X and haven't noticed any of the issues plaguing the PS5, but regardless this is one of the best 3rd party remakes I've played.
@Janne Laitinen you can't link on UA-cam. Other tech channels have shown it affecting the Series consoles and PC. You can also find users on reddit posting photos of the problem on the Series consoles and PC as well. It is less pronounced, but it is present on all versions of the game. Hopefully, they drop the feature and rely more on drs. FSR won't have a hard time with reconstruction due to the high contrast nature of the environments.
Really love the thoroughness of this review! Especially going through the first hour comparison. Exactly what we need of a remake/remaster review! Keep it up!
I just hope they’ll fix the graphics bug quickly. As someone who haven’t played the original I’m really excited to play this game but right now it’s unplayable on my PS5 Edit: credits where credits are due. EA just rolled out an update and I’m checking it out right now and the graphics went from 2010 era to 2023 after this update. They fixed it and it’s beautiful now
I recently purchased and refunded this, I can attest to the great graphics and sound design for the few minutes I played, but having stuttering issues, no FOV accessibility option, and no full DaulSense support (as other games are starting to more commonly have) on PC makes me want to hold off for these to be added, modded in, or for a discount.
I've been replaying Dragon Age Inquisition on PC and that Frostbite game still holds up! Absolutely gorgeous. There are lots of great looking Frostbite titles, of course.
@Obscure Gun I disagree, I like the ideas that dead space 3 has, it would be a bigger job than the first two to adjust everything but I think it's possible
I can definitely vouch for the intensity director working. If you repeat a section after getting killed or something, you won't experience the same thing. Sometimes, nothing at all even turns up lol This looks fantastic on my Series X too. I'm not sure if the issues with PS5 have been sorted out?
Just a heads up! This game does support Dolby Atmos for home theater, but you have to select 3D Audio in the settings. I've been playing for 3 hours and only used multichannel because, confusedly, it's worded similarly to Metro Exodus and the Resident Evil games in that it's as if it's only for binaural headphone audio. I did select 3D audio when I started the game, but switched it back because my receiver didn't activate Atmos quickly enough. Just checked again and it is there.
I was gonna replay the original DS, so I could really appreciate the upgrade. But I decided not to because it's been 15 years and I forgot the story, so, and I'll be able to enjoy both the visuals and the story as if it was my first time ever playing DS 1. And it was DEFINITELY the right choice.
Some of the changes design-wise are a bit unusual. Like the reanimator introduction. You walk past a whole load of corpses, then see what's going on in the room but it's separated. So you think you're safe. Then it bursts through the glass, and those corpses suddenly become a huuuge problem... in the remake, you're in there with it. It changes the context from safety that's taken away, to a more action-oriented piece. Very strange decision.
I love how you've handled this release, John. Fair criticism of a serious flaw, yet you've lauded the game for the overall product, as well as giving the Devs their voice in highlighting the upcoming patch. Congratulations on the great work!
That's completely wrong, and it's a false equivalence. Dead Space wasn't a 90s game with fixed camera angles now was it? RE2R is basically a reboot. DSR is closer to a remaster in this respect. This remake cut some sections of the ship, possibly some enemy variant designs, and at least one audio log. That's not all.
Singleplayer remake: Complex, amazing audio system which bounces sounds accurately off of materials and gradually dissipate into the distance. Multiplayer games: lol, just make the footstep go crunch crunch or whatever. walls? who cares just make it go through the wall, who cares haha! then call it a "world class audio system" (I'm talking about the tragedy that is MW2's muffled mess of audio)
I don't understand why you guys can't figure this out. When displaying comparison footage, old on the left, new on the right. ...like reading. Old on the left, new on the right. Old on the left new on the right. Are you getting this?
Was running really great on my 3080 Ti. 4k60 max settings DLSS balanced. Then I started tweaking the settings to see if I could hit 120 at 1440p, and performance seemed to degrade with every change and didn't return even after reverting to my original settings. Very strange. A patch is definitely needed. Looks beautiful though and performance is generally much better than Callisto was.
Calling this best in class remake is wrong. It has many flaws/performance issues (I'm sure devs will iron it out in a few weeks). Demon's souls on the other hand actually is best-in-class remake.
I really do believe that the older game is scarier because of the less impressive graphics. I think John even said something similar to “less impressive graphics let’s your mind fill in the blanks” and what the mind fills in is scarier. Not always the case of course but I do believe this is one of those games.
I've been checking your channel daily, sometimes several times for this video and alas! This is my first time playing Dead Space and it's coming after The Calisto Protocol, which was a fun game but now I see what all the fuss was about with Dead Space. It's magnificent. I don't know anything about the sequels but I'm hooked. Great video as always and thank you for your high calibur, in-depth reviews.
sighs... It's eye-ZIC not eye-ZAC. Sorry, really huge pet peeve with reviewers for this remake/remaster. It's enough to ruin said review. (Yes I know that's petty. But we all have our pet peeves that absolutely wound us to our core. So much so, we can't get past it.) For some reason this mispronunciation is one of those. I absolutely freaking cringe when someone says eye-ZAC over eye-ZIC. Again, I know it's petty so don't at me. Other then this cringe worthy oversight, amazing video. I do demand you edit EVERY instance where you mispronounced Isaacs name. Or the gods will condemn you to the bowels of bloody hell.
Callisto protocol is a bad game. The graphics and the atmosphere are great, but in everything else it fails, it's been a while since I felt that I didn't waste my time with a video game. Nothing to do with what Dead Space presents, an excellent game, which was already in 2008 and now they have improved in each part. It feels incredible and is very enjoyable. everyone has said it and I repeat it too, the sound and the use of lights and shadows are spectacular.
ya, this is asinine. The people paying for this is why everything stagnated in the industry. The reviewers and everyone praising it is just as guilty, too. Why even try anything new when you won't be rewarded for it most likely? Might as play it safe, race-swap some characters for some woke points and then cash out.
@@peepopoo4387 I'm honestly SICK of remakes for good games made a decade ago. Is the safest route you can go (and just exposes how rotten and out of ideas the AAA industry is). Feels intentional with the Peel System they added. I noticed tht with the Flamethrower or the Force gun it can get rid of the skin and sometimes muscle completely. Best part of the video, the juxtaposition with the serious voice over is just too good.
One of my favorite little touches are when you're on the train and going past multiple stops, you can see those other stations in the window. Really makes the ship feel grounded and real.
"Whole"... Nice one.
I also got stopped on the train by an attack Don’t remember that happening in the original
Yea but the res also drops insanely low on the tram and elevators. It's really distracting
@@Elsinnombre-ez5dn it definitely didn't happen in the original as the tram there was just a loading screen.
also how the stomp at the start is different from the stomp at the end.
This, and lou2 sound amazing
That isn't true...unfortunately. I definitely remember killing some enemies then their bodies disappearing soon after. WHILE I was near them.
Yeah that definitely isn't how it works, bodies disappear in the remake.
@@TheKingUpNorth Bodies and other items seem to disappear in some areas where environmental changes occur, but not all. I'm seeing some bodies/pieces lasting through multiple chapters, whereas others seem to disappear if the area saw some major changes for story reasons before I returned.
Yeah especially that giant tenticle that grabs you from behind a couple of time. In the original it would fade away in a way that looked terrible
Some of the best level design ever indeed! :)
Well put ! The ship is imposing and scary
That first time you get to float around in zero G in the hangar was amazing! I explored every nook n cranny hehe
The clunking sounds that the ship makes are scarier than the actual necromorphs at times!
Hardly unsung but I think it's something DS1 always had over the sequel. It was like Event Horizon in game form.
I absolutely love the seamless interconnectedness of the entire ship now. It reminds me a lot of exploring Arkane's Prey where that station also felt woven as a whole

A remake of _Dead Space 3_ ? Are you joking? _Dead Space 3_ is what killed the series. It wasn't even markedly the same horror experience as in the first two games. It was atrocious.
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate how good the 2008 version looks today. Fantastic
And it’s also 15 years old and still looks amazing. I used to play it on my Xbox 360 late at night with no lights on and the volume turned up and it made me jump more than any other game though alien isolation was nearly on a par with it. I really want the remake but the price at the moment seems a bit excessive.

It really doesn't, Dead Space 2008 is still _gorgeous._

I know it's not novel, but just the way Isaac cranes his head up or down a little to look where your looking adds so much to immersion.
Yes! I noticed this too and found it very interesting! I remember seeing Isaac looking up at these tanks with floating bodies as I was walking around it. Really neat touch.
Also, if an enemy spawns behind you, Isaac will turn his head to the right/left letting you know to turn around.

That's some dedication
I’m pretty sure they have advance copies sent to them by the publishers most of the time. It’s the same way that lots of UA-camrs are able to crank out a full playthrough/movie of the game on launch day.
That’s not to take away from DF’s work, of course. Still a ton of work involved to get these videos done.
They get review copies like everyone else and I don't believe they even beat the games.
@@LN.2233 well they're goal technically isn't to review the content of the game solely but the technical aspects so I don't hold that against them. @@LN.2233 Not sure if that's true for this video but they tend to mention when they beat a game or got pretty far in the videos. Since this is a remake of an original game it's very possible john didn't try to beat the entire thing, but if I remember right he did beat forspoken.

Because EA cuts you a generous check to say flattering things about them
How about this, it's best in class....on console. 😅😁
You should have mentioned all the issues with the PC version, like Denuvo and the stutterfest.

Calisto Protocol looks like it is a generation ahead in graphic fidelity compared to this game.
Not at all. Dead space looks way better. And is a way better game.
Callisto Protocol is trash.

He’s an engineer not special forces
When are you all doing a PC, PS5, Xbox Series X comparison?
Sound is half the picture!
So glad to hear more attention being paid to this aspect.
I wonder what this means for the future of the generation. Will developers have to find another way to save on performance, or will every future game just look worse on PS5 because VRS as a performance saving tool will become more prevalent? If so, I feel like skipping hardware VRS on the PS5 might have been a short-sighted decision.
Absolutely not. Main tech to save performance is reconstruction. Also software vrs in last Call of Duty games works very good.
optimised settings?
Looks like PS5 just got a hotfix that corrects the issues outlined in this video. I own both versions of the game, for PS5 and Series X, and they are far more comparable now than they were yesterday. Would love to see a followup to know what was changed and how each version stacks up after the change as it is not an insignificant update. I believe XBox also took an update as shadows look different in some sections I had noted over the weekend where lighting was different on the consoles. There is parity here now between the two so I am curious what got changed in both. But great video nonetheless. Sometimes timing is weird like that.
PS5 player here, yeah it's a night and day difference.
omg that jab at Forspoken was GREAT, thank you for making fun of that absolute joke of a 'game'.
This to me feels like what we got with the Resident Evil 1 Remake. With resi 2 remake, they changed the camera and gameplay fundamentally, whereas REmake had similar gameplay, with changes, additions, and revamped graphics. Good job DF Team, and good job EA!
The game looks and plays amazing. Looking forward to a remake of DS2!
As much as I love DS2, this remake really just makes me want an all new story, perhaps even a different protagonist.

Just wondering where Oliver's console comparison video is? Is it still happening?
John said it would release the very next day 5 days ago!
I've just wrapped up my 3rd playthrough of Callisto so I have some thoughts on the game you might find useful to determine whether or not to give it a try:
Cons:
- WAY too many vents, crawl spaces and ladders
- Not enough enemy variety
- Very oddly paced and simple narrative that had the potential for some Spec Ops: The line shenanigans but blew it
- Very conventional weaponry and not much of it
- Not very scary but I think this is just the reality of being a fan of survival horror. There are some great jump scares mind you!
- GRP is severely overpowered and there are far too many 'spike walls' placed everywhere for no logical reason
Pros:
- The gameplay despite taking a bit to get used to is very tight and punchy. Tying the dodge/block inputs to directions on the left stick was something i hated at first but grew to love with time as it restricts you when fighting in an almost Resident Evil 1 kinda way
- The voice acting and motion capture is incredible. Josh nailed the 'tough pilot guy thrust into chaos' shtick surprisingly well and Elias/Dani are also very 'real' in their presentation and performance
- The animations are insane.
Either way now you'll go into it knowing about the main issues I mentioned and as a result you might have a better time with the game than everyone else did at launch with crazy expectations!
What happened to the second video???
Is it just me, or is it only the horror games that get the best remakes out there? I will say this, whoever lead this project at Motive definitely plays Dead Space, and knew what they wanted to do.
I'm glad that this game got the remake it deserved like RE1 back in the gamecube
I knew something was off while playing the ps5 version! Things looks really blurry and pixelated at times..Hopefully they fix it soon
Just played the first chapter on my Series S and while we dont have ray tracing or 60 fps the game is still breathtaking! Some of the best graphics and atmosphere i have seen. Well done Motive 👏🏻👏🏻
the series s should have a 60fps performance mode with lower resolution its most likely to be added in an update later
@Women should cook And clean unprompted Then why is this current gen exclusive able to run very well on Series S and not at all on last gen?
@Women should cook And clean unprompted I wouldn’t say that, the game looks almost just as good on series s than the other consoles The series s is for sure next gen they could get it to 60fps if the resolution is lowered to say 900p or so though then you will start to see the visual quality be not so good
@Women should cook And clean unprompted Your name says everything anyone needs to know about you
@@dutchguy1807 ever considered why Series S can handle those next gen only games?
You haven't noticed them because they don't exist in other versions. Series X has hardware accelerated VRS. PS5 relies on software variant of VRS.
@@UltraCasualPenguin They do exist, they are simply less pronounced.
@@TruTrae Link?
@Janne Laitinen you can't link on UA-cam. Other tech channels have shown it affecting the Series consoles and PC. You can also find users on reddit posting photos of the problem on the Series consoles and PC as well. It is less pronounced, but it is present on all versions of the game. Hopefully, they drop the feature and rely more on drs. FSR won't have a hard time with reconstruction due to the high contrast nature of the environments.
@@mikew1080 agreed
Really love the thoroughness of this review! Especially going through the first hour comparison. Exactly what we need of a remake/remaster review! Keep it up!
I just hope they’ll fix the graphics bug quickly. As someone who haven’t played the original I’m really excited to play this game but right now it’s unplayable on my PS5
Edit: credits where credits are due.
Gotta love the dig at Forspoken at 7:09 😆
Great video, especially that part at 7:09.
that was gold
I've been replaying Dragon Age Inquisition on PC and that Frostbite game still holds up! Absolutely gorgeous. There are lots of great looking Frostbite titles, of course.
Hope that EA continue giving that treatment to dead space 2 and 3, and maybe a new entry.
@@ObscureGun Which would be a good thing.
@Obscure Gun I disagree, I like the ideas that dead space 3 has, it would be a bigger job than the first two to adjust everything but I think it's possible
I hope if they remake 3 they should completely overhaul the story. Less action, and no co-op
Since they give you DS2 original if you preorder DS1 remake I really doubt it.
@@Terepin64 3 isn't that bad.
I think particle effects are one of the most noticeable special effects that I love.
I agree, I thought seeing it do its thing through the class was far creepier than getting pulled into a cutscene
When you zoomed into the PS5 VRS texture issue, it reminded me of a PS1 texture.
Yeah, its same on series x!
I love how you've handled this release, John. Fair criticism of a serious flaw, yet you've lauded the game for the overall product, as well as giving the Devs their voice in highlighting the upcoming patch. Congratulations on the great work!
They really did give this remake the RE1 remake treatment! Nothing cut, almost everything expanded or remixed/enhanced in some way.
@@windy3935 He said RE1 remake not RE2.
@@theonewhoistornapart2506 Apparently yeah.
My overclock was causing the game to crash immediately on start up but since I’ve gotten it running it’s been fantastic.
CPU or GPU? I've been running it with an almighty GPU overclock with 0 issues.
People need to reward consumer friendly games (and remakes) like this, that is the only way the industry will improve 💜
I was tweaking settings during game play and out of nowhere, it turned into a slide show. Kind of acts like it's a little buggy.
This had happened to me in many many games that has DLSS. Switching between DLSS setting back and forth many times seem to cause it.
Dunno if they stealth patched it or what since launch but performance appears to be back :)
Great video (as always) John. All the extra trivia and BTS info you got from the devs really elevates your videos.
Calling this best in class remake is wrong. It has many flaws/performance issues (I'm sure devs will iron it out in a few weeks). Demon's souls on the other hand actually is best-in-class remake.
This game is incredible. How they managed to improve a classic with just about everything set for Issacs face which I'm still trying to get use too
I really do believe that the older game is scarier because of the less impressive graphics. I think John even said something similar to “less impressive graphics let’s your mind fill in the blanks” and what the mind fills in is scarier. Not always the case of course but I do believe this is one of those games.

But we all have our pet peeves that absolutely wound us to our core. So much so, we can't get past it.) For some reason this mispronunciation is one of those.
The bar is so low that a remake of a 15 years old game in a decade old engine running just fine gets a high praise.
ya, this is asinine.

Supposedly intentional to make it more realistic with them being zombie-like and all
Feels intentional with the Peel System they added. I noticed tht with the Flamethrower or the Force gun it can get rid of the skin and sometimes muscle completely.
