This is what was missing from Whittaker's Doctor. The goofy, friendly, silly Doctor is still there but the dark undertone is missing. The Doctor is the orphan of a world they killed, they're a war hero and criminal and genius, who has seen the start and end of creation and lived unknown lifetimes, who has saved countless worlds in an attempt to repent for the sins of their past. @@acolytetojippity even if The Doctor isn’t the Last Timelord anymore they are still a War Hero and Criminal who was fully willing to commit double Genocide.
Exactly this💯💯 Such a shame. This was what I'd been looking forward to the most when she was cast. The duality between the lighthearted facade the doctor often puts on and the darkness lurking underneath.
@acolytetojippity This was a while ago, but I just want to say the fall of Gallifrey was not the only sin the Doctor committed in the war, much less throughout all their lifetimes. We're told that when offered, the Doctor said that they’ve committed more sins than they could ever have time to confess to. They said that as a timelord, or maybe they meant in one sitting, who knows. And while it might've been hyperbole, I still think the Doctor has gone through and done enough in their lifetimes to still have some edge. Though I agree that the Doctor can walk with a lot of weight lifted off their shoulders now. Sorry for the long response, thanks for reading if you did!
I love the look on Amy's face after the "fish fingers and custard " line , after he says "my life in your hands" and turns away you see the weight of what she has done come crushing down on her. The weight of his statment in that moment was fantastic.
Yes, we all think that Matt Smith is the quirky Doctor with the bow tie, braces and headgear, but man, could he strike the fear of God into you at any given moment.
I know all the comments are about Matt’s acting here already, but god DAMN is his acting outstanding. Every tiny decision he makes adds to such a deliciously well crafted whole. He was born to be an actor
The intensity, the darkness, the cunning of 11. Honestly my favorite doctor. I do agree with the other comments about river song’s pain. But another part I wanna draw attention to is the end when he says my life in your hands pond and she starts to break down a little. It’s a tactical ploy but it reminds me of the second episode of his run when they went to the future Britain spaceship and he blew up on her for not telling him shit. Just that and the weight of having the life of the savior of the universe(future and past) on your hands.
Every time I hear people talk about how Matt only ever played the clown, or how he was only ever so silly, I think about this scene and others like it. Matt's Doctor got across his weariness, experience, and the breadth of his travels far more often than people give him credit for.
Being a background character doesn't make you a third wheel, I don't think Amy was ever "in love" with the doctor even though she loved him. The Doctor scared her too much, but he needed her to keep him grounded, and Rory was who kept Amy grounded
Paladin’s Fury | That has nothing to do with what he said here though. He’s just saying that in this in scene, he just literally stands there while the other two characters who have deeper relationships with the Doctor are carrying this interaction. It’s a shame really, I love The Doctor and Rory’s friendship but it is what it is.
@@charlietownsend2826 yes, but the doctor in this scene is very young as for this incarnation. He knows Amy, he knows Rory much less, and has only a vague idea of who River is. It's natural he wanted his best friend to swear if he was going into something potentially dangerous and without the faintest idea of what lies ahead. His and Rory's friendship blooms later on, but at this point of Doctor's life he's just Amy's boyfriend (probably they're not even married in his head) whom he took on so that Amy remembers the life she has left behind. After all, when this story arc is over and the Doctor can reveal that he did not die, he goes to the Ponds' house and you can see how warm he is towards both of them. His relationship with Rory just took a lot longer to grow and steady.
The way matts expression softens when she says fish fingers and custard. Like a huge weight has been lifted. Spectacular acting from everyone in this scene
0:41 "Don't play games with me. Don't ever ever think you're capable of that." There's something so chilling about this line having just seen the Doctor go up against the toy maker again. At the end of the day he's a Time Lord whose battled Gods and Monsters and WON. He likes humans and enjoys spending time with his friends, but he is something so far beyond any of them. This moment is like him reminding his companions of that and you can feel the silence in the room it commands.
11 isn’t my favourite doctor (I have only watched New Who) but he definitely has a magic and a force that is excellent. But this scene makes him the Doctor to me - that darkness, trickery and wisdom. He got it so right.
Not being 95 years old, I've only seen New Who and anyone who says 10 isn't their favorite is a liar or an idiot. That being said 11 is a close second. 9 was great but didn't stick around long enough to make it into consideration. The rest don't even get an honorable mention.
@@jedimastayoda112 Ten isn’t my favourite. Tennant is probably the best actor but the way he’s written most of the time just doesn’t exploit Tennant’s range. (Admittedly a problem for all actors involved) My list goes: Twelve / Eleven Nine War Doctor Ten / Ruth Doctor Thirteen

Josh Carless Short non-spoilers explanation - the four of them received invitations to meet at a certain spot. River, Amy and Rory found out why but aren't saying and the Doctor is having a hard time dealing with that. They found out something about the Doctor's future and River has warned Amy and Rory that they can't reveal to the Doctor what they now know.
This is where we see glimpses of Ten and Seven inside of Eleven. The coldness of Ten and the ruthlessness of getting answers out of people which is Seventh Doctor (near the time of his regeneration)
Shout out to all my fellow Moffat era fans. I LOVED this era and no amount of hate can stop that, if anything it makes me love it more. I enjoyed the RTD era but Moffat's made me fall in love with the show.
FYI my favorite part is when Dr.Who questioning River and he says “ I love me a bad girl, but Trust you”. His facial expression is so subtle ... with anger, annoyance and judgement. So gripping. Love it.
The way he delivers “Now i love a bad girl me. But trust you ? Seriously.” really throws villain vibes. He’s literally telling them not to fuck with him, or else they have no chance against him.
Imagine how painful that is for River. Imagine meeting your romantic partner before they properly met you and started the relationship, and have to hear them say they would never trust you.
This is a prime example of why I don't like Jodie's Doctor. Not because she is a bad actor (she's great), not because she's a woman (the Doctor can be anyone), but because the people who write and produce her shows didn't do anything on this level. The only thing that comes to mind when I think of dialogue from Jodie's companions, are lines like "We love you Doc, you're great Doc, don't give up Doc." If they'd been given better scripts and better direction, the show would not have crashed.
I've said the same thing. She suffers the Colin Baker syndrome. Awful costume (she's stunningly attractive and in real life wears beautiful clothes and is endlessly stylish) and awful scripts. I was hoping some of her real life style and charm would come through, plus companions with depth rather than just being bullet points on a sheet of paper. None of the companions are real people. They have tick boxes which they play to every episode. but outside of that all they do is follow along with "What's happening? Who's that? You are awesome Doctor.". I was truly excited to see Jodie in the role, and it had nothing to do with her being a woman, just that other stuff I'd seen her in and interviews she had done made me excited for the potential.
@@adelucas4824 That was a good point about Colin Baker. As a kid, I came into Doctor Who during the Jon Pertwee era and was happy right up till Colin appeared. Being so young at the time, I assumed Colin was a jerk but years later found out he was cool and was given scripts that made him look like a jerk. I'll always feel sorry for Jodie and her fellow actors for what they had to work with. They deserved better.

I really liked this scene we always get to see Matt play a love able quirky doctor but this scene had a lot of power in it for sure. He was the one not knowing what was gonna happen and that did frighten him the funny parts in this scene was when he said off you pop and go make babies to Amy and Rory and when the doctor just plops in the Tardis chair 😂. I loved that little smile the doctor gave Amy in this scene
The "fish fingers and custard" is so effective because it basically shows to the doctor that Amy trusted him blindingly in the past.. so she asks him to do the same thing.
I never understood that scene. How he cannot trust River Song ? He saw her die for him the first time he met her ! It seemed weird to me, first time I was shocked by the Doctor's reaction. Apart from that, I love every episode with her. I still haven't finished watching the show (I'm still with Matt Smith as the Doctor) but I hope there is more to watch with her and the next doctors !
I reckon it's A) The River he met in the Library was in a job as an archaeologist, not in prison, so she may have been a different woman at the time B) Going all out trusting her from the start would've been a terrible idea
As the Doctor remarked, River kept too many secrets from him. Her identity, her past and her crime. It prob annoyed him to a certain extent whenever she says "spoilers". Additionally, this scene single-handedly showed the Doctor's flaws without being on the nose about it. He constantly keeps secrets from his companions, but could barely suffer them knowing something he doesn't. He may enjoy River's presence and flirt with her, but the true Eleven never trusted her without knowing who she was. This points to a certain level of arrogance, him holding himself to a higher standing compared to other people. Even a bit judgmental towards River. It took Amy reminding him of their bond for Eleven to finally yield and go along with the plan.
@@WiGgYof09 perhaps but to be fair he doesn't know the foreknowledge we know. So not trusting her at that moment is the logical thing to do. Just think about it. The first time you meet someone they are so familiar to you and tells you something you thought only you knew, died, then meet again unexpectedly in a dangerous situation and you don't know anything about this women but she knows everything about you. For me I would not trust that person one bit. I might play along but I would never trust them. The doctor doesn't trust River until at the very least When a Good man goes to war at the very end. The doctor has always had an arrogance about him because he always assumes that he is the one all the time in a single room that knows everything or close to everything. In this case, he is caught off guard because for once the companions have the 'upperhand' on foreknowledge than him. I like seeing the darker sides of the Doctor. It makes him a little more relatable but also a scary godlike figure as well. All the actors who play/ed the Doctor have to capture that element of his/her personality. The underlying personality that threads all the doctors together into one being. To be short yes he could of said something like 'trust you? Maybe. Someday. But now? Really?'. Something like that. But that relies on him knowing his future and to me the Doctor's personality is not like that the yeah maybe aspect. Even though he/she is blahzah about gender, sexuality and concept about time. His/her's concept of trust and friendship and loyalty has always been rock solid. To me anyway. Sorry for the long comment
0:21 reminds me of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory at the end when Wonka is sitting in his chair, head in his hands, not acting mysterious and aloof anymore. You can see how old and tired he is. Love it!
This is one of those moments where the mask slips for a moment. Where the companions get reminded just for a second that he is there friend, and their protector, but there is a dark, rage-full, alien god just beneath the surface.
Okay, it’s been a minute since I watched 11’s bit, so I know those are the outfits they were when he dies (kinda). But remind me how it links to this episode?
addison braden, after they burn the Doctor’s body, Amy, River and Rory recoup at a diner, where they realize the envelopes they’d gotten (telling them where the meet the Doctor who died) were numbered; 2 and 3, and they find another envelope numbered 1. They figured The Doctor invited someone else to his death, along with the clues he’d given them before he died. While they’re trying to figure out who 1 could be, the Doctor (younger by quite a bit) steps out of the bathroom. The Doctor invited himself to play, before he was taken off the board. But because timey-whimey, River, Amy and Rory can’t risk telling younger Doctor what’s happened to older Doctor. They’re asking him to trust himself, to solve the mystery he’d given them before his murder, but they can’t tell him that.
AmbitiousWitch I was thinking about it the other day. From a few clips and couple episodes I’ve seen of her (stopped watching after capaldi left, wasn’t a big fan of how it was starting to get gritty and very differently aesthetically) but it seems to me that Jody is trying to just emulate 10, but very badly emulating him
This is why you really shouldn’t trust people because the closest person to you can betray you. But such a life is empty so better to die at the hands of a close friend then live without having any. So be aware of what you are really doing when you trust someone people.
Imagine someone knows everything about you, including one of the greatest secrets you've ever kept. But they won't share anything about themself. Would you trust that person?
This two part episode literally ends with a white male wanting to marry a black man in a time when both of those things were very illegal. In the words of 12, shuttity up.

except by the time we get to her Doctor, they know they're not "the orphan of a world they killed". Of course the followup to Capaldi's Doctor is going to be lighter and more cheerful.
Sorry for the long response, thanks for reading if you did!
you can really see how old he is, like can you imagine being a kid, withholding an important information to an adult? that's pretty much this scene
That moment when he's questioning Amy and says "you're lying" gives me chills every time!
"My life in your hands, Amelia Pond."
The reason she shot the astronaut.
I know all the comments are about Matt’s acting here already, but god DAMN is his acting outstanding. Every tiny decision he makes adds to such a deliciously well crafted whole. He was born to be an actor
I think even though he's one of the most popular doctors in the fandom he's kind of underrated at the same time because of it.
I think Matt Smith is the only man who can look scary and intimidating wearing a tweed jacket, bowtie, and braces.
The danger in his voice when he asks if they're being threatened. I love it.
Fish fingers and custard, only thing stronger than pinky promise.
Just the way he says 'Okay' to Amy is... there's so much in there
Rory's never been more third wheel than he is here...
Valpas Kankaristo Please, this is the season when he became the centurion. Is Danny Pink who became the fifth wheel.
He got more to do later on, but in this scene he seems like such an extra lmao
1:15 - Imagine how shit you would feel if your husband actually said that to you...
Poor River 😭 Alex said so much without saying anything.
That subtle thing he does with his mouth at 1:13 ... I just like it :p
One of Smith's best moments
I love how he drops his chilling persona the second he thinks Amy is in danger.
One of my favorite scenes. The emotions here - all of them on the part of all the characters/actors - are incredible!
(Admittedly a problem for all actors involved) My list goes:
Twelve / Eleven
Nine
War Doctor
Ten / Ruth Doctor
Thirteen
@@jedimastayoda112 the rest? There's almost 60 years history of the show. Of course, they get a mention.
@@jedimastayoda112 Lol dude this is you projecting. Just because you're a Tennant fangirl doesn't mean everyone else on earth shares your opinion. If you've never seen the older Doctors, you're just missing out.
@@jedimastayoda112 Lmao, that's hilarious. 10 is certainly not my favorite. I like David Tennant, he is very talented but I have issues with a lot of the writing for his doctor. Can't stand the 10/Rose relationship, can't stand the way he was so dismissive of Martha, that comment he made to Donna in Partners in crime about Martha honestly makes me want to slap him and there is so much in the RTD era that's just cringeworthy to me. I like 10 but out of the NewWho doctors I prefer 11 and 12, also possibly 9 but he did only have one season so it's hard to compare.
Love re-watching this scene. The acting here was incredible!!!
Matt was the best doctor
A Daemon Targaryen moment
You can see how hurt river is after he says 'trust you..? How could i ever.'
This man doesn't know her and it kills her to know.
It’s the fact he know every journey they take will be dangerous, it’s worse he doesn’t know what to expect from the journey they know of and keep from him
This scene is SO freaking good
"a mysterious summons, you think im just going to go"
Yes, yes I do.
Doctor: Off you pop and make babies.
Amy: Already did.
Doctor: What?
Rory: After our wedding.
Doctor: WOT?
River: ...
Doctor: Well, congratulations?
I miss Matt smith :c
I love how after she says those four words you can see his eyes search her face, looking for any sign of deceit before he accepts her word.
*April 23, 2011 at 6pm. 7 years on the dot.*
THEVALEYARD do you mind giving me some context for this scene. I don't acre about spoilers I just don't understand why he wants to kick them off or what they know that he doesn't
Watch the episode Josh! :D
Killer Keemstar ID LOVE TOO but there no way of watching these episodes for free
StillJustDreaming cool do you mind giving me the spoiler version because like i said I don't care about spoilers
Same. And it was a Moffat episode that got me into the show (Blink)
I miss this era so much!! haven't watched doctor who since Capaldi.
Matt Smith's intensity is just so AAAAAAAAAHHH!!! ❤❤
One of my favorite scenes from doctor who. Thanks for posting this.
FYI my favorite part is when Dr.Who questioning River and he says “ I love me a bad girl, but Trust you”. His facial expression is so subtle ... with anger, annoyance and judgement. So gripping. Love it.
Oh my gosh, I just noticed when 11 asked Amy if she was being threatened, he looks in Rory's direction.
He did lol
i can only imagine how that sounds to someone with no context XD
I just finished rewatching the seasons with this trio and oh ;( the tears
also finally a video that was uploaded recently rather than 7 years ago lmao
The way he delivers “Now i love a bad girl me. But trust you ? Seriously.” really throws villain vibes. He’s literally telling them not to fuck with him, or else they have no chance against him.
The return of the fish fingers and custard!!!! 😁
Imagine how painful that is for River. Imagine meeting your romantic partner before they properly met you and started the relationship, and have to hear them say they would never trust you.
My heart breaks for River 😭
1:40 and this is why they’re my favorite Doctor-companion.
That probably broke River's heart
When River closes her eyes after he hurts her 😭
Fish finger and custard. This is why Matt Smith is my doctor!
I loved Rose, but Amy was absolutely gorgeous.
This is a prime example of why I don't like Jodie's Doctor. Not because she is a bad actor (she's great), not because she's a woman (the Doctor can be anyone), but because the people who write and produce her shows didn't do anything on this level.
The only thing that comes to mind when I think of dialogue from Jodie's companions, are lines like "We love you Doc, you're great Doc, don't give up Doc."
If they'd been given better scripts and better direction, the show would not have crashed.
@@martythemartian99 If you manage to get hold of Colins Big Finish stuff you'll see how good he actually is when given the right material. He's one of my favourite audio Doctors.
the most dangerous man in the universe is staring right at you and river just be like 🤨
I really liked this scene we always get to see Matt play
a love able quirky doctor but this scene had a lot of power
in it for sure. He was the one not knowing what was gonna
happen and that did frighten him the funny parts in this scene
was when he said off you pop and go make babies to Amy and Rory
and when the doctor just plops in the Tardis chair 😂.
I loved that little smile the doctor gave Amy in this scene
The "fish fingers and custard" is so effective because it basically shows to the doctor that Amy trusted him blindingly in the past.. so she asks him to do the same thing.
He felt something, I'm sure of it
Doctor: A mysterious summons you'd think I'm just going to go?
Me: yup
I never understood that scene. How he cannot trust River Song ? He saw her die for him the first time he met her ! It seemed weird to me, first time I was shocked by the Doctor's reaction. Apart from that, I love every episode with her. I still haven't finished watching the show (I'm still with Matt Smith as the Doctor) but I hope there is more to watch with her and the next doctors !
I reckon it's
A) The River he met in the Library was in a job as an archaeologist, not in prison, so she may have been a different woman at the time
B) Going all out trusting her from the start would've been a terrible idea
Thank you for the answer :)
I think it could have been worded better. Maybe instead of never he could have said "maybe someday, but that day hasnt come yet".
""""i love a bad girl me, but trust you !! """ i am sooo using this line
0:21 reminds me of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory at the end when Wonka is sitting in his chair, head in his hands, not acting mysterious and aloof anymore. You can see how old and tired he is. Love it!
I love that fish fingers and custard count as something that matters without question.
The fish fingers and custard thing kinda ruined the serious tone, but I still love this-
I feel like it doesn't if you know the context.
the music used in this scene is the same one from the short where the eight doctor regenerates
0:43 COLD
Love the chair!
My favourite doctor is definitely David Tennant but Matt Smith is my runner up doctor! Amazing actor!
The 2,000th like has a special animation, apparently.
"Swear on the fez!!"
Back when the show was actually good and not total shite.
Gosh dang it, I hate angry whispering.
This is something missing from series 11! Shes good but she couldn't pull this off
O O F
Huffn Puffn, ouch right?
And whoof.
Eleven be intense.
I've been there some one not trusting me...and I don't know why
No France vs Scotland six nations? 84th minute winner
I never understood why "fish fingers and custard" was something important to swear upon. I know where it comes from, but that?
I think it's more symbolism that she's swearing on the bedrock of their relationship. That was how they met and everything started!
Where are his eyebrows?
Leah Gorman they're delicate
They didn't finish loading
on 12th
Somehow being all fidgety and childish. This is what actually I don't find in Jodie's doctor. the shady side of the timelords.
AmbitiousWitch I was thinking about it the other day. From a few clips and couple episodes I’ve seen of her (stopped watching after capaldi left, wasn’t a big fan of how it was starting to get gritty and very differently aesthetically) but it seems to me that Jody is trying to just emulate 10, but very badly emulating him
Off you go to make babies! And you doctor song 😲
This is why you really shouldn’t trust people because the closest person to you can betray you. But such a life is empty so better to die at the hands of a close friend then live without having any. So be aware of what you are really doing when you trust someone people.
It would have been cool if they brought back tennant as the younger doctor
No tennet was a twet and if i never see rose again it would be 2 soon
Why doctor doesn trust her she is the only one who knows doctors name in the tardis
Imagine someone knows everything about you, including one of the greatest secrets you've ever kept. But they won't share anything about themself. Would you trust that person?
I love a bad girl. Hmmmmm, wonder if he and Missy something something tree something something?
Matt was meh
Peter was great
Chris was fantastic
David was incredible
Tennant was incredible
Tennant is my favorite.😊
Team Tennant
+Bethany Taylor
That's exactly how I feel
Bethany Taylor true story... Matt was really good but the scripts didnt help him at all...worse for Peter...
Can't stand River. At all
Back when doctor who was good and not ruined by trying to be a member of the woke club
Doctor Who has always been ‘woke’
This two part episode literally ends with a white male wanting to marry a black man in a time when both of those things were very illegal.
In the words of 12, shuttity up.
