  • I have made a Remote ID Range test to see how you can be spotted by using a free drone scanner app for Android in the Play Store. Remote identification, or RemoteID, from January 1st. 2024, it is mandatory in the EU for Drones like DJI Air 3, DJI Mavic 3 Classic, DJI Mavic 3 Pro, and all other DJI Drones to be operated in the open category in Europe under the New 2024 Drone Law.
    DJI Mini 4 Pro is not REQUIRED to have RemoteID enabled in EU

    From EASA website:
    "Starting from 1 January 2024, all drones operating in the open category (with limited exceptions) must be equipped with a remote identification system. Some companies have already placed modules on the market providing a direct remote identification system, providing the ‘EU Declaration of Conformity’, and you can find a list below. Please be aware that EASA did not verify the compliance of such components, and the declaration of conformity is submitted under the manufacturer's sole responsibility."

    Seems like the DJI software, should in return, alert you that someone is following you using your remote ID. the pilot should be informed of that person’s location. Fair is fair, in the name of transparency. Right?

    • @Inertia888
      @Inertia888 6 місяців тому +1

      I like that.
      But for that to work, all phones would have to be fitted with the type of Bluetooth that broadcasts that far. The BT on the RID module broadcasts much further. Otherwise, the person following you, would only be broadcasting 30meters, at most.

    To get off subject slightly, DJI recently discontinued the product called Aero Scope. A receiver that can detect the control signals of a DJI drone up to 20 miles away. It is used around airports and other TFR areas. I think the reason it was discontinued is because it could be used in areas like the Ukraine to detect DJI drones. The system only detected DJI drones but I don't see why somebody else could design a receiver and a decoder or data slicer to detect any drones operating in the WIFI frequency band.
    I haven't tried to sniff the airways with my spectrum analyzer, but I would assume the airways is an RF-rich environment. One would have to have a decoder system to filter out the many consumer devices that use that band. Jim

    I'm not sure how many people you have to help you for additional testing, but it would be interesting to see multiple drones and locations at the same time. Does it show the same information for 2, 3, 5, etc...? Also I am wondering the the remote signal itself may be interferring - could you test it being 10m from the remote?

    We have learned that Remote ID has the range of a Tile Tracker, 100-150 meters. Unless you are an idiot who hovers in place, if you are flying by at speed, the odds of someone launching a tracking app & zeroing in on you are slim to none. Further proof the entire RID concept is a solution in search of a problem.

    Hi Henrik, thank you for your brilliant work.
    I wanted to take the chance to ask you something which diverts from this video's topic.
    Have you ever flown drones in Portugal? I'm heading there for vacation and planning to take Air 3 and Avata 2 with me. Initially I thought there would be no problem with regulations, having my A1A3 certification and flying C1 drones on European soil. Yet when I dived a bit into Portuguese regulations (I was actually looking for no fly zone maps and found thier official App called " Voa Na Boa") I found contradicting informations ... to make it brief, they say you can fly freely in open category with complying drone, but if it is equipped with a camera and you are planning to take photos/ videos, you need to apply for permission, which doesn't make much sense to me... do you know anything about it ? Thanks

    Great test. So we can resumen that, at a lower amplitude, worst detection, higher amplitude, easier detection. Radious upto 100/160 Mts distance, could be detected. For the next test, you can try on the contrary, ask for a friend to help you, to lift/fly or drone and you (without a drone), from distance, check when can you detect the drone and the operator. Best wishes from Spain

    There's also a difference if you're using a drone with a retrofitted RID module versus the newer drones with RID already built into it. A retrofit RID module will only show you the last known takeoff location whereas the newer drone units with standard RID show the the ground control station location (controller/cellphone) with a continuously updated status. DHS is working on a public safety version of RID receiver so soon they will have more visibility on RID.

    You could do a bisection search to quickly gather accurate data:
    Fly out to where it doesn't work;
    Halve the distance;
    If it works fly to half way between those two locations... and repeat, so you close in on the actual range.

    • @lindsayheyes925
      @lindsayheyes925 6 місяців тому

      @@TECHDRONEMEDIA Sorry, I didn't explain it very well:
      Fly out to 200 metres;
      If not detected, fly to half the distance (100 m);
      If detected, fly to half-way between where detected and where not (150 m);
      If detected fly to 175, but if not fly to 125
      ... and so on.
      You should be able to quickly plot the envelope as a graph with X = range, Y = altitude by joining the dots.

    A question from a user in the UK, where we are not yet afflicted with remote id, but dark rumours swirl about us: your video shows that when you enable it you have to enter your operator number into the controller. Since DJI presumably do not have access to lists of drone pilots' operator numbers, is there anything to stop the user from entering a bogus number?

    • @Inertia888

      Probably better to either fully comply, or not comply at all. There are many ways to trick the system. But if you're going to do that, the way I see it, if you got caught not using it at all, at least you can claim that you didn't know. But if you're caught messing with it, that shows knowledge of the system, and intention to break the rules of the system.

    Something like this only provides relative readings. If you don't want to be detected, don't hang your transmitter 100's of feet in the air. Even a VERY LOW powered transmitter at microwave frequencies.
    The sensitivity on this level of equipment would exhibit performance characteristics nowhere near anything which would be useful.
    If you used this to compare a whole flock of drones, you might be able to tell which one transmits a little farther.

      With 'Standard Remote ID', (as per the rules of the FAA, in the US, and I suspect that most other RID compliant countries, will have similar methods & rules) the RID module is broadcasting the GPS location, such as 'Home Point' (or place where the drone was launched) and position of the drone, with a version of Bluetooth, that has a longer range than the Bluetooth that we're used to with our computer peripherals, and headphones. The phone's BT receiver uses that data, with the App, to show the positions on a map. If DJI is using a different method, I am unaware of it.

    • @jm3779
      @jm3779 6 місяців тому

      As the remote id in this case uses the same frequency range as your remote controller this would be not useful because you jamming your own means to control the drone. And proper authorities have measures to triangulate the yammer location besides your location anyway. If you flying a dji drone they locate you even without the remote id activated through your remote controller signals itself with a dji scanner specifically designed to detect drones flying around airports or other sensitive locations. If you flood the areas with fake identification then this would make legal action against you only worse. Fly safe and give them no reason for legal action is still the best advice.

      DJI can force a firmware update before you can fly your drone with no problem. They snuck it in as the last item on the last firmware update for the Mini 4 Pro and many did not read it and updated without knowing it in the US. I understand it somehow knows if you are using an extended flight battery instead of the normal battery making the drone weigh over 250 grams. This causes a mandatory remote ID transmission from both the drone and controller.

    FORGET REMOTE I/D... I could already easily sniff your main DJI telemetry directly with a cheap SDR receiver (giving me your drone location, height, speed, pilot location etc etc) whether you have a remote I/D module or not.... & I can do that at a range greater than you can fly to. Your handset with its pretty poor stubby little antennas gets the data to/from range X.... if I use a good yagi antenna instead of those little antennas I can get over 20dB gain which is x100 on the signal & signal drops off as a square law so if I sit on the roof of a block of flats with a clear shot out & you reckon you can fly to 3km (clear LoS) then I expect to be able to sniff your live telemetry & data out from 30km..... & if you are using the FCC hack with the higher power expect to be sniffed at even longer ranges.
    This is just me as an amateur. The authorities with proper facilities & money will find things easier.
    Check out the youtube videos on how to receive drones with a cheap easily available SDR RX (& what info is already available from it).
    The worry about RID pilot location is interesting.... If they are going to be limiting your VLOS range to sub-200m then if I go and stand where the drone is flying then I can probably see you flying it anyway so how much extra risk does RID put you under?.
    Also, if pilot risk is such a problem what about FPV?... the argument there is spotters should not be needed but who is looking out after your safety when you have goggles on and only have situational awareness around the drone but not around yourself?. There is one youtube video with drone crashed when pilot distracted when chased by swan. Stick a pair of FPV goggles on & without a spotter what protects you from being pecked in the nuts by a swan?... attack risk here unimpacted by RID or not.
    Basically if you play low around the clutter, don't go far & are EU then you are not going to get noticed..... Go High, Go Far, go FCC then you may as well just be shouting "HERE I AM... COME & CHECK ME!!!".
    One thing I can see is that the police generally will not be bothered checking out all the trivial crap so the chances of getting caught doing anything will be quite low, but I could easily foresee general AI sniffing of things going on... if it sees raw telemetry data & RID and they agree then ignore this flight. If they see raw telemetry & no RID or spoofed RID that doesn't tie up then those are the flights they will be more interested in so killing your RID may actually make you more conspicuous rather than less.
    If you took the number plates off your car would that help or hinder you trying to "fly under the radar"?.
