DJI Mini 4 Pro - Remote ID (RID) flight test with the Standard Battery and the Plus Battery

- In this video I test fly the DJI Mini 4 Pro with the standard sub-250g battery and the plus battery to see if the drone is broadcasting a Remote ID (RID) signal. I used the Drone Scanner app and Pixel 6 android mobile device to receive the signal. I also looked at the distance that the Drone Scanner app can receive the signal from the drone. There are a few surprises.

Hey Marcus. Thanks for doing some testingbso folks can learn what to expect, and plan accordingly. There are a LOT of variables-hoops that DJI needs to accomodate. Between RID, the European 120 meter altitude from Homepoint (unless you drop the classification of the Mini 3/Mini 4 Pro models: a somewhat permanent change to its ise case applications) -to the change when flying sub-250, 250+ with the Plus battery, its a LOT to be aware of and manage, both for users, authorities and manufacturers. People generaly wax poetically abiut "simpler times" -never was it more true than the fast developing world of your favorite hobby and mine! Keep up the good works 💪

So am I to understand that I should not order the 4 pro with the 3 pack of “plus” batteries? I’m guessing I need to register my drone and get a license if I want to use the heavier batteries as they will make the weight over 249 grams….newbie here.
You need to at least take the FAA Trust test no matter what. But yes, and drone over 249g require a registration number. It only costs $5 and is really easy. Check out the FAA drone zone.

This just displays the limitations of the current implementation of remote ID, I wouldn't be surprised if future iterations would be devised to work over LTE Networks. Obviously, not something I'd be in favour of. Another great video, Marcus 👍

Good video and I haven't tried Drone Scanner yet but will have to this week. I do have the regular battery, a Mini 3 Pro battery and the extended battery so will be interesting to test all three. I can see in AirData if RID is being broadcast and with the regular battery it doesn't see it. My Air 2s does show RID also.
The Pro batteries are same between Mini 3/Mini 4. It's the standard battery that's a bit less dense, runs at slightly different voltage, and the 3 battery puts the 4 a few grams over. Turns out the 4's changes left it in need of a slight trim to the standard battery to make weight on game day. 😂

if I use the standard 4 pro 249 battery, it is nor broadcasting. yes?
if I then use a plus battery, it broadcasts. yes?
question is, if I then go back to the standard 249 battery, does it then STOP broadcasting again? ie- it goes back and forth between broadcasting and not dependent upon which battery is being used at that time?
Yes, it will stop broadcasting when you go back to the sub-250g battery. 👍

My Ruko drone broadcasts a message around once a second anytime it has a GPS lock. My Mini 4 Pro only does so while flying with the Plus battery, and it's one message after many seconds. I have not yet seen it broadcast a message while using the standard battery.
Regarding distance, I think a lot has to do with the orientation of the phone relative to the drone. If both the drone and phone antennas are in parallel orientation then they will be "polarized" and distance should be increased. It's probably difficult to know the phone's wifi antenna orientation without disassembling it though, so it would be difficult to know which way to hold it.
It should, the DJI drones continually broadcast GPS strength and location. 👍
Thanks Marcus. It seems to me that the operator should be able to control RID transmission when flying sub 250g. Also I think there is a way to change the refresh rate for the DroneScanner app. I think it defaults to checking once every 60 seconds at least that's what I remember from watching other similar videos.

FYI, you change the default update rate 60s to as quick as 10s. In the Drone Scanner app under the settings menu, preferences it's listed as "expiration time".

Unfortunately, the Mini 3 Intelligent Flight Battery when used in the Mini 4 Pro puts the M4P over 250grams. So the fact that RID was transmitting in your test using the Mini 3 battery in your M4P is what I would expect and want, to be in compliance with the FAA RID rules. I'm certain DJI has engineered their software to recognize the different drone and battery combinations that can be flown and is insuring they are in compliance with the FAA rules for when they MUST transmit RID. I have to give DJI credit as they are trying to keep the sub 250 gram drone pilots that do NOT want to broadcast RID happy, while still meeting FAA requirements. They could have just broadcast RID on the sub 250 gram Mini 4 Pro irrespective of which battery is being used and left it at that. Great testing anyway!!!! Thanks for taking the time to do the testing in mid winter.
Thank you! At the time I did the test I was not aware of the difference between the Mini 3 standard battery and the Mini 4 version. DJI is keeping us in compliance.
I just picked up a mini 4 pro. I installed my mini 3 batteries, and it's still 249g for all but one of my batteries. I wonder if Dji made changes to the m3 batteries. The mini 3 is only 3 weeks old.
@@lexxb6386 You have to be careful with which battery you use in the M4 Pro if you want the M4 Pro to remain under 250 G. The M3 Intelligent battery will physically fit and work on a M4 Pro. BUT, the M3 Intelligent battery is heavier than the M4 Pro Intelligent battery. 81G vs 77G. So the M4 Pro with the M3 Intelligent battery can end up over 250G. Not sure how to explain the situation of some of your M3 batteries working in the M4 Pro at under 250 G but one of the batteries NOT being under 250G. I suppose that it is possible that your M3 drone shipped with some M4 Pro Intelligent batteries and one M3 Intelligent battery. If you have a kitchen scale you might try weighing the batteries to see what you have. There may also be some identifying labeling on the batteries that would identify an M4 Pro battery from an M3 battery. But I do not have any M3 batteries to give you any help there.

Good test Marcus. Regarding RID. DJI just made it confusing with batteries that work differently with the mini3 pro vs. the mini4 pro. Probably a firmware update that will have the M4P broadcast RID with the standard battery, or remove RID from the M3P on the standard battery. Either way RID is crazy, but in todays world I'm guessing necessary!
I agree, there are so many ifs ands or buts with RID. They never make it simple.
Thanks, Marcus! We can't get too much information about RID! I wondered if there was a setting in the app that controlled how often the screen was updated. The big question that I have is if the app assumes the home point is where the pilot is located? Some time, park the drone out some distance and then walk away from the home point to see if the pilot's location moves, or stays at the home point. If it moves, how is the controller getting GPS positioning?

I wonder how long before places such as swan falls dam (critical infrastructure or other restricted areas) install RID receivers to log nearby drone activity and incursions?

It would be beneficial if restricted area had a reverse RID function that would alert you that you're approaching a restricted area rather the pilot always having to know every restriction. That's equivalent to having no road signs while driving.

Under the Drone Scanner settings, you can change your app refresh down to 10 seconds from the 60 default. Look under settings.

I mistakenly purchased the Mini 4 Plus. We would like to take our drone to another country and stay under the 250g. I don't really want to return the drone and reorder the sub-250g version. Can you tell me if I can just purchase the sub-250g batteries and be ok? I understand that the Mini 3 batteries are heavier so those are not the ones I'm referring to.

I wish you had access to the Mini 4 Pro small battery just to check that (and also with the latest firmware download from DJI). This is a big issue from me because I use my mini 4 pro under Part 107. Flying with the larger battery (or a module on the drone with the smaller battery) puts the drone over 249g requiring registration. Flying with the small battery is then illegal if it doesn't allow RID since the drone is registered, but it's nice to know that the Mini 3 battery allows RID.
In that case if when you're doing commercial work simply use the plus bettery. 👍
I tested my Air 3’s RID this morning, it shows up on Drone Scanner (for a very short distance) I then flew my M4P with the extended battery, it does not show up.

So from what I understand the update doesn't affect the mini 3 pro so to me that means if that sub battery you are using was updated using the mini 3 pro it's going to broadcast rid .
The Mini 3 Pro will broadcast RID with either battery.

Yeah it os strange thst dji got rid of the built-in remote id in some of their mini 3 pro and 4 pro drones, especially with those becoming mandatory pretty soon here, couldbe one reasonnot to buy those drones if you are a part 107 pilot unless if you are jist planning to fly at rhe FRIA sitrs instead. Ended up buying one of the holy stone remote id modules for the drone I have (dji mini 2). It os relatively cheap compared to some of the other ones available and very light weight too. Pairs well with the mini drones in my opinion. On a side note, I have bee goibg to northern Idaho for some of my drone flights lately (though at the mercy of weather conditions at this time of year, plus working full tome at Walmart now too, which will limit the days i can fly). I moved to Spokane Valley (near Liberty Lakes) in late June, so I am alot closer to the Idaho Border than I did when I lived in Snohomish. Probably won't be going to the Boise area anytime soon (long drive from Spokane Valley), but I am relatively close to Post Falls and Couer D Alene. Got a fligjt at Hausee lake out ner Rathdrum last week. Almost did lake Pend Orlee (notnsure if that is spelled right) in Sandpoint, but it was too windy today. Had to postpone it for another trip. Visiting the Schweitzer mountain resort today though. Can't fly my drone there at least without permission by resort management, but I can at least take photos with my phone instead

13:11 that's no true, it will not activate on the stock mini 4 pro battery, if you use the mini 3 battery its heavier and will activate the RID, I have both, and when I switch the batteries it will update one way or the other, So I'm not sure why you thought the mini 3 battery was lighter, because when I weighed them the mini 3 battery was heavier 120 grams (mini 3) vs 77 Grams (mini 4) Also of course if yo use the mini 4 pro intelligent plus battery RID will activate also.

Hi Marcus, Drone Scanner is problematic. It takes forever to update. You may want to try the Air Sentinel and OpenDroneID apps to detect RID. BTW, the DJI drones use WiFi for transmitting RID. The Holy Stone RID module uses Bluetooth. Landing pads are round, round, round, precision landing all around the town. lol

The scanner app it’s showing GPS coordinates of where your drone is. I don’t see your location though it says altitude unknown so maybe they can’t see your location .drone whoever looks at it they can see your drone but they can’t see you.

Negato, it's from the drone, that's given them altitude, distance or position, so it's better to pickup signal from observation tower, control towers, satellites, etc. This kind of drone use a PC board , like a Personal Computer....
The batteries in the Mini 3 are actually heavier than the mini 4 standard ones. There's a youtube video where a guy weighed them. I wonder if the Mini 3 itself is lighter to have its batteries marked as 249g.

Page 120 of the DJI Mini 4 Pro user manual v1.2 2024.01 states, "Note that the Remote ID system is ONLY activated when using the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus". Of course no mention using earlier Mini 3 Pro batteries which they prenatally never bothered with.
Using a Mini 3 Pro battery with the same specs as the Mini 4 Pro 2590 Mah 77.9g if your tests work for others is reliable, keeps the weight down, sends the remote ID and doesn't have to be registered. Then any accessory added to the Mini 4 Pro with 43.1g of battery plus weight or even a 10g strobe light exceeds the limits. Looks like a lot of DJI Mini 4 Pros will soon become registered.

Mini4 pro will not show remote ID if you are using the sub 250g battery from the mini4 pro. If you are flying mini4 pro and using mini 3 or mini3 pro batteries it will show remote ID because the mini 3 and mini 3pro batteries are a little heavier in weight. The drone scan app refreshes every 60 seconds. By fault.Thanks for the video 😊

As of September of 2022, DJI notified all Mini 3 Pro owners (in my case, via e-mail) that there was a mandatory firmware update which would force the RID transmission at all times, regardless of which battery the craft was using, & 1nce updated, no "rollback" was possible.
--> Pro Tip! Always check & read the details of firmware & software update, prior to downloading & installing!
RID is a regulation that we all comply with now. It has not changed my flights. 👍
I wasn't aware that the Mini 3 Pro and Mini 4 Pro standard batteries were different when it comes to RID. This could've saved me from having to buy a RID module for my Mini 4 Pro. I used to have a Mini 3 Pro (with fly more kit), but it crashed so I bought the Mini 4 Pro (again with fly more kit) knowing that it had RID. I now have 6 standard batteries, so I didn't want or need the plus batteries. This was all before DJI came out with a firmware that disabled RID on non-plus batteries. Needless to say I wasn't too happy about that, but I ended up buying a RID module to stay compliant. Now I need to sort my standard batteries, so I know which ones enable RID by default and which ones don't. Thanks for the info!

I hope you get one too. They are so much fun it's worth saving up for. You definitely won't regret having it. I'm so happy with mine. It's the first drone I have ever owned, for that matter it's the only drone I have ever flown. Haven't crashed yet "knock on wood" but with all the sensors and of course my own common sense I feel confident it'll stay that way. It's a very intuitive controller and not hard to fly at all 🚁

First of all, you need to have the plus battery for the mini 4 to see remote ID
If you use the pixel phone you need to have Bluetooth enabled the iPhone I think only works with Wi-Fi not both

You are not in compliance with Part107 FAA rules here. In order to use a Mini 4 Pro with the standard battery for a part 107 flight you must have an external remote id device, and the drone must be registered commercially with that external remote ID. And on another registration with the internal remote id if you also use the Plus batteries. You put the registration numbers on the batteries and use the external remote id on all Part107 flights. All commercial flights must transmit RID. All registered drones and those that require registration must transmit RID Your part 107 flight here in this video is NOT compliant with Part107 because you were not transmitting RID with that standard battery, and you did not use an external RID device. This has been the case since the last upgrade.

Good intentions but I have found Drone Scanner to be very unreliable. In fact for me it didn't work most of the time and I couldn't draw any realistic conclusions with my testing. You need to go to the FAA and have them use their equipment for a real drone busting test...LOL

Conclusion: With the Mini 3 Pro battery you can still get fined even if the drone is under 250 grams and it is legal to fly there with a sub 250 grams drone. But if you put a mini nuke on top there is no way to tell it is over 250 grams with the Drone Scanner app.
Well that's good to know. Remote ID is really going to make the world a safer place doesn't it? Wouldn't it be better if that helicopter had Remote ID so you can bring down your DJI Mini?
Just curious, are you flying FAA compliant? Does not appear so. No VO, and you cannot see that drone that far away, good topic, just sends the wrong message to beginners when Experts are in violation of FAA rules while filming,
