  • I have made a Remote ID Range test to see how you can be spotted by using a free drone scanner app for Android in the Play Store. Remote identification, or RemoteID, from January 1st. 2024, it is mandatory in the EU for Drones like DJI Air 3, DJI Mavic 3 Classic, DJI Mavic 3 Pro, and all other DJI Drones to be operated in the open category in Europe under the New 2024 Drone Law.
DJI Mini 4 Pro is not REQUIRED to have RemoteID enabled in EU

    From EASA website:
"Starting from 1 January 2024, all drones operating in the open category (with limited exceptions) must be equipped with a remote identification system. Some companies have already placed modules on the market providing a direct remote identification system, providing the ‘EU Declaration of Conformity’, and you can find a list below. Please be aware that EASA did not verify the compliance of such components, and the declaration of conformity is submitted under the manufacturer's sole responsibility."

Interesting test. The Android phone was a wi-fi signal scanner sent from the drone - the phones' wi-fi range is about 100-150m and this is the area in which you scan the RID.

Nice testing and very well performed. Mmh, regulations which state for the mandatory requirements, yet the FLIGHT SYSTEMS and the flight tracking is basically very weird and not synchronized at all, considering if you have a RC 5o guide, the mobile phone ID tag is just additional and does not provide any resourceful indication while you fly with the drone. Apart the GEOMAPPING, it is just like having GOOGLE MAPS open and looking at you position. Mmh, again, the DJI is lacking a lot for Technical Metrics and FLIGHT ASSISTANCE especially from the app and drone configurations. Nice testing, by the way!

The first drone operator that gets attacked by a crazy Karen, will generate massive lawsuits. We went 70+ years without any hobbyist getting seriously hurt or damaging property. Remote ID is potentially dangerous for hobbyists safety and totally unnecessary. Only commercial (Amazon etc.), should have remote ID, due to the massive size and weight of their aircraft, that could potentially hurt people or damage property.

it already happens in the USA, theres a youtuber who makes videos of the crazy encounters. What annoys me is that when big RC helicopters were literally killing people in the 2000s no regulations happened, but the moment DJI got popular the entire RC model hobby gets hit by the same regulations and DJI and other camera drone users.
also whats crazy about Drone Scanner app is that if you check the reviews, people are giving it 1 stars because they're going around trying to find people who fly quads and drones, so we are already at the point where to ensure you are safe you dont put the module on.

    Thanks Henrik. Two points:
    1) for the distance between the drone and the detection app, you need Pythagoras ;-). If you let the drone hover at 100m high (vertical distance) while at a horizontal distance of 100m (D), the real distance for the Remote ID signal is 141 meter.
    2) if I am correctly informed, the drone is emitting the launch point or the home point as operator location. So a good further test (if you want to ;-) ) would be to see what happens if you (a) walk away from the launch point taking the controller with you and (b) if (in that situation) the operator location stays where it was, to see what happens if you update the home point.

    • @youssefkarmous6227

The drone scanning app clearly looks for the 'controller-side' transmissions. Drones only (primarily under normal conditions..if windy, it'll transmit a short message that pops up on controller) receive signal THEN perform action received. So, the drone scan app looks for presently active drone communication bandwidth of an active communication link. If no broadcasts are detected, this will not work.
Because all drone flight is to be line of sight, you'll not normally separate the two too much that a drone scanner can't find both. Id guess the farther away from the controller you get, the ability to detect the broadcast signal fades (probably by the inverse-square principal) as distance is lengthened. As always, trees are a natural Faraday cage. If there are trees between you and the remote, depending on their density of placement and how bushy/leafy they are, that probably also takes away the ability to find a broadcast signal easily.
If policing authorities don't use a REMOTE ID detector without an antenna that can be aimed in different directions, the drone hobbyist doesn't have anything to worry about if authorities use equipment & software that does this. For them to upgrade to something like air traffic controllers would likely be out of the cost range most municipalities would spend only two give 2 or 3 ticketed fines a year. No real return on investments (including training of police authority how to use it). Very expensive.
Remote ID has always been a tool of fear used to control the drone hobbyist. Therefore, have fun safely and fly your drones wisely.

Watching Your 2 last videos about the remote ID, i shake my head and ask why it's needed at all?
Any monitoring/chasing/watching authority needs to stand almost behind the drone, drone pilot, to register it.
What the hack? Using eyes, binoculars, the pilot would likely be found.
One, unidentified(!), drown was shot down in Gothenburg not long ago. A Brittish navy ship was visiting the town....
Will a detect distance of some 150 meters make much difference? I don't think so.

Henrik. Thanks for another useful video. this is a subject that it's making me crazy. The RDI is not working at my AIR 3, at least, using Drone Scanner, doesn't show, using wifi tracker, nothing too. I think that, of course maybe is a app subject, DJI has to take a deep look at it, as, if is not working properly, we can have issues with security forces. No need to say that the possibility that "someone" could detect us and our drones, brakes the Data protection Laws as it shows everybody my license ID, my drone ID, my position, except my name. How can it be possible that EU doesn't have this in mind and check how to protect our rights? Keep working making videos.

It shouldn't effect GDPR, certainly in the UK as there is no name to personaly identify you. Your vehicle licence plate can be used to identify your vehicle type etc as it's a public document, so you could use the same argument. In the UK there are also journalistic exemptions to allow you to be identified.

Here in the US, we still have about 5 weeks before RID becomes mandatory. So I am concerned about what, and how much, data is being broadcast. I would like to have seen you carry the remote controller and see if the location of the pilot changes on the app. If the RC2 controller is not bound to a smart phone, does it have access to position data? Does the program assume the Home Point and pilot are co-located?

Hi henrik. Maybe it's mentioned before but I would like to see a test where the drone is like 800 meter away from the controller and the drone scanner is 100 meters from the drone in opposite direction. If the scanner still can see where the operator is. That would really be troubling and would mean that the drone sends out the operators location.

It has always been available for detection. DJI did previously sell a solution DJI Aeroscope for that purpose in order to locate the position of RC.
Now: who do u think would be equipped with handheld RID scanners? It's a federal EU EASA regulation and rule. It's not wrongly interpreted as legislation and laws.

Hi Henrik, thanks for taking the time to carry out these tests, very interesting; I acknowledge that you were testing the heavier drone that already had remote ID enabled; I understand that drones less than 250g are not required to have remote ID, such as the M4P with a C0 label, but if you use a Plus Battery, or M3P battery, you get the message that the device is over 250g and doesn’t comply with C0 requirements; and my question is whether the M4P then starts broadcasting remote ID as it’s over 250g?
I think this may be the case in the US but wondered if it is so in the EU?

That should improve the reception. However, generally speaking, Wi-Fi reception on smartphones is problematic as the power-saving modes on the OS usually kick in.there is no way to have control over the Wi-Fi scanning as it is completely up to the decision for the operating system. The only thing that helps is to disable the WiFi throttling.
So after drone scanner support told me that i acessed my phones developer mode and disabled wifi throttling and that seemed to rectify the problem of the drone not showing up on the drone scanner app and now seemed to be visible fairly consistently
