That just shows how different everyone's sense of smell and taste is. I have yet to find anything even close to being as good at Half and Half and I can't stand the taste or smell of Prince Albert. Sir Walter being my second favorite. Haven't tried Carter Hall yet. Anyways thank you for taking the time to record this.
If you had Sir Walter in the tub there would be no contest. Except maybe PA, also in the tub. They are just so much fresher, it’s almost a different blend
Great video. I keep all these blends in my rotation. Carter Hall my favorite of the blends you reviewed and very similar to Prince Albert but I think the Virginias in Carter Hall give a nice contrast which helps to make the Burleys stand out more. If you haven't already, I suggest trying a blend by Sutliff called Ready Rubbed Match. It's based on the original Lane Limited Ready Rubbed which used to be called Edgeworth. It's a cube cut Burley that smells like Granola and has flavors like Chocolate and Molasses. Its by far my favorite Codger blend.
Definitely will try that one, thank you! I find myself reaching for Carter Hall a lot these days. It's just so darn easy and pleasant to smoke. I've also cracked open some Sir Walter Raleigh (regular) and been working through that this week; it's growing on me quickly. I guess the saying holds some truth - sooner or later we all end up at Burley :).
PA guy, just me. It was my cowboy Grandpa's one-handed RYO smoke and I like PA's grace notes of Turkish and Tidewater. Anyhoo, I've had great smokes just coming back to a forgotten pouch of SWR after about 3-6 months or after jarring it about the same bit. Smells and tastes like rich spiced holiday wine. Burley is Americana at it's heartfelt best. Hearth & Home Burley Kake, Mac Baren Navy Flake and Symphony are also undersung burley blends. Will definitely check out the Sutliff Match. Thank you!
One suspects they marinate Half & Half in licoricey anisette oil and then spritz it with eucalyptus out of pure orneryness, yechhhhh! Which is a shame, because mechanically it smokes like a user-friendly champ.
Congratulations on wearing your boonie hat in the proper-best, casual fedora-like fashion. Keeps the sun off and the air moving. New to your channel and subscribed immediately for the opening sequence. Comedy! Regards from Kuala Lumpur, with Burley Kake in a Missouri Meerschaum "Kolonel" and a cold coffee. Keep up the tempo!
My palate is very similar to yours. I also threw out the half and half and enjoyed Sir Walter and Carter Hall. My faves are Kentucky and Peterson Virginia flake. Thanks for an excellent review sir.
Really enjoyed this video! I am opposite-not digging the SWR but enjoying my Half and Half. Also enjoyed a few of your other videos! Looking forward to more.
I just tried SWR this week for the first time. I may have found my new all day blend. I haven’t opened my CH tub yet. I didn’t find the H&H to be as bad as you but was not a huge fan either. I need to get some PA to try. Thanks for the review.
Because I am prone to tongue bite, like so many pipe smokers, I now smoke codger blends almost exclusively. By the way, all of these blends have a small amount of added flavor. I've tried them all. Prince Albert in a tub is my favorite. I also find half and half to be unpleasant. Like many smokers, I prefer Sir Walter Raleigh aromatic to the regular. It's not really an aromatic as it has only a hint of added flavor. Carter Hall and velvet are good also. I recommend you try two other blends: Burley Without a Bite, by Lane. And Vanilla Custard by Sutliff, which is heavily flavored but smokes clean and not goopy, with no bite.
I have tried the Vanilla Custard, but did not like the topping for some reason. Maybe it just didn’t agree with me, but I started getting a little ‘green around the gills’ after a few puffs. Prince Albert and Carter Hall I keep around for easy day smokes, and sharing. Good standbys.
@@calebwhiteknives After decades of pipe smoking, I now follow the good example of millions of German pipe smokers; 6 months ago, I switched to 9mm charcoal filter pipes and I ain't going back! Now I can smoke daily with zero tongue-bite (which is actually an unhealthy chemical burn). Because my mouth is no longer saturated with tars and nicotine, I can better taste tobacco flavors. Most brands offer pipes which accomodate 9mm filters, and some brands, like Vauen, offer only filtered pipes. 9mm charcoal filters are the way to go and no one can convince me otherwise.
Great vid! As for me, Carter hall has a chocolate raisin smell and taste. It’s the only codger I’ve smoked. After trying it, I never felt the need to try the others. Its pleasant and unpretentious. I can get a big jar and have it around for quite awhile.
It does have a chocolate raisin smell!!! That's it, i've never been able to put my finger on it until you said that. Perfect description. I had some this morning, and it is a very pleasant and simple blend.
I can't get along with Half&Half either. I find it to have a grassy, citrus and synthetic taste. The retrohale burns, which is a deal breaker. SWR I like. It's never exciting, but it's always a good middle of the road smoke. When my tastebuds want a mild smoke, it's SWR to the rescue. I'll give Carter Hall a try based on your opinion.
Thank you for your comments! SWR isn't unpleasant at all, and makes for a "good enough" smoke whenever nothing else is available. Carter Hall just has some element to it that is sweeter, and more bread-like...in a comforting way. Where as something like Prince Albert is just pure burely tobacco enjoyment, without much personality, but a fine smoke.
an old channel that was formerly knife making things...the "tube gods wouldn't let me rename it so i had to completely remake the other channel, and now using this one as a pipe/making/'baccy channel. It's been a pain in the neck for the last two years...long story short.
More or less: this channel has been permanently de-monetized so I'm using it as a 'fun' channel, while trying to rebuild my education knifemaking channel from the ground up. I lost a lot of content that had been up for a decade. Good times.
@@calebwhiteknives my channel is very new. I will not even try to monetize it. I’ve made a lot of friends with this channel. The pipe community is really great. So I don’t want to monetize it. Typically it refers to a blend made mostly of Virginia (Va), with a special condiment tobacco called Perique (per, thus...Va-Per) added as a 'spice' element. The Perique is a very unique type of tobacco on grown and matured in a single parish in Louisiana.

Lane RLP-6 (captain black white pouch) is my favorite codger Cavendish blend.

Interesting little hammer hanging on the wall. Ash handle? Did you turn it yourself?

My dad smoked Half & Half for a long time. But it might have been because it was 15 cents a pouch rather than 25 cents a pouch.
