We had 2 cabbed 4520s. That was an upgrade from our 4010 and 4020. In the 60's in Central Illinois, we were moving away from plowing to minimum tillage using a disk and chisel plow. These two tractors were real workhorses for us
I have had one for the last 30 years. It was a main tractor for me, along with a 4430. I had the 4520's engine overhauled a couple of years back. I don't use it for much now but I still have the 5 btm plow it used to pull , it might make a few "plow days" in my retirement.
Great video, we run one of these on our farm as the main horse. Pull amazing and really has never let us down. Got the original cab and everything on it, they are quite the machine.
Thank you for the video my friend when I was younger I worked on a family friends farm and I spent a lot of time in a 1969 4520 with a hiniker cab and I miss that tractor. Please keep up the excellent videos
Love your videos Locust Motor Works, you know how to prepare and present your knowledge of John Deere Tractor’s, always nice seeing what you are going to talk about next!
great video...I've always wanted to know the history on the 4520 bc I could never figure out how the 4620 fit into the picture...now I know! I hope you do a video on the 4320 & 4620....also the 6030....I could never understand why they kept that around after having put out Gen 2 30 series SGB's.
Knew of a few 4520's around norther n Illinois. Had an uncle that had one around Macomb Il. Never thought of asking anyone if I could run one, I guess at the time was just too busy. Did have a fella that did have one that also ran my grandfather's 4320 say that it seemed the 4320 had more power for its size then the 4520. My grandfather had a 4320, and two 4020's, one a powershift and the other one was a synchro. My preference was always the 4020 powershift, was much handier around my grandfather's livestock farm. The 4320 worked well, went through three turbo's from I guess idling around doing spreading duty and sometimes running the Knight Big Auggie. I guess the 4320 seemed a little better for field work, If I had the chance to purchase today a new 1972 4020 powershift, or a new 1972 4320, I would choose the 4020 powershift every time. Good video, good information.
A farmer that lived just a mile away from where I grew up had a 4520 with a 158 loader, man-o-man what a combination tractor and loader! He used that tractor for collecting round bales with a bale spear front and back, you could come off the field with 4 bales at a time and the tractor wouldn’t even mind!
The 4520 we have on our channel went through a little work a little altered. I tried to share the link to it but didn’t know if it made it in the comments
I’ve got two models to suggest. One is the John Deere 2010 and the other is the John Deere 318. I’ve owned both and know the issues with the JD 2010 but would like to hear your thoughts on where Deere messed up. On the 318, I’ve just acquired one and am impressed thus far.
We have a 1969 4520 and we are in 🇬🇧 she was brought over from the USA about 2 years ago we take to local shows and on tractor runs to she gets a few people looking around her because not many in 🇬🇧 compared to the 4020.
The 4520 had a few faults no inter cooler ,bad design cbc injector pump and air cleaner and to me seemed gutless for its size and weight the 4020 really punched above its weight i comparison considering it was only a 90hp tractor i think the 4620 rectified most or all the 4520 problems . R
4620 didn't solve any. I had a 4520 and my friend has a 4620, both gutless wonders. We used mine on a great plains drill billion cultipacker, and track eliminator, it had its hands full. Replaced the 4520 with a 190xt series 3, which played with the same load. Big clumsy and gutless.
My dad bought a 4320 brand new in 1972. What a beast it was.

Love the 4520s 💛👍
Awesome tractors!
Great video! I always wondered how that fit in with the 4320 and 4620!
Appreciate it, thanks for watching👍🏻👍🏻

The later 4320 had the same engine and about the same power. Great video with good information. Thanks!
We have 3 4020s. And 1 4620

Hope it was a powershift, because the synchro smash runs out of oil for loaders
@@RJ1999xPowerShifts would as well, just took a little longer.
@@thegreenerthemeaner never understood why they built them like that
@@thegreenerthemeaner nice to hear from you again, I was just thinking about you last week
@@RJ1999xThank you my YT friend. Missed hearing from you as well. Someday, we gotta find a show somewhere......

Your 4520 sounds good! Gotta love the the cloud of black smoke👍🏻
grate video man
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching
You really should do a G history video, considering how legendary they are amongst enthusiasts.
Got one coming this Sunday😎thanks for watching
Great video. I hope you do a video on the 2040 through the 2940 series.
I might be able to get to those sometime in the future👍 Thanks for watching
W tractor
I like it
I'd really like to see a video about the 4640. Everyone always talks about the 4440, let's hear about the 4640
Had a 4520 with ppwershift and hiniker cab..she was a lo omotive
Could you do a video on some of their center articulating tractors
👍🏻👍🏻
I have two 4320,s one station & one with cab no air! Would like to hear about them!
Sounds good👍👍
I was just wondering if you had anything on a John Deere 4840 it was one of my favorite tractors on the farm
I’ll put it on the list of videos to make👍🏻👍🏻
Heat but no A/C? Must have been warm in the summer lol. Thanks for another video!
I think the last 4520s had the a/c option. Hiniker cabs were bake only.
4520's my first tractor still used today, along with a 4620.
Awesome it still is working today👍👍
@LocustMotorWorks you bet bales 160 acres and sits on a 13 inch auger after!
I really enjoyed this video, but I am waiting the video from the titan series combines

Yes, got both on the list for the future👍🏻👍🏻
I’d love to find a 4520 for 12-15k cause there’s 4020’s selling around 16-18k here and the 4520’s are around 20-25k from everything I’ve seen
I'd love to hear about the dubuque tractors of 1976
I wanted to know about 4620 back in the day

🎉Suggest a video on the John Deere 50 series -- which were produced from 1983 to 1986/87.
6030
How about the 4320 and options
Great videos! Back when Deere made real tractors. They got ugly after 1972.

Big clumsy and gutless.
Back in the day someone traded a 4520 in at local IH dealer
Probably on a 1466 or 1486. Those would run circles around the 4520s.
