I come from an amish family. 90% of my extended family is still amish. I've always wondered, what happened to anabaptists who stayed in europe and did not emigrate? Did they assimilate into other denominations or are there still anabaptsist communties around.
Edit: Great video by the way!

    • @DainetheHistorian

Hey @Dairy Peak! RL! Thats really interesting that your family is predominantly amish, are you from America? I made a video about the anabaptists a while back, but I am making some documentaries about the specific anabaptist groups (Mennonites + Hutterites) which will answer your question! But yes, there are still anabaptists in Europe, however in much fewer numbers. They were heavily persecuted by both the catholic and protestant state churches, as-well as enslaved by the ottoman empire which drove them to near extinction. But this topic will be covered in much more depth in a video coming soon!

@@DainetheHistorian Yeah the main protestant branch is the Calvinistic (sorry for my English; not native) one. Although the number of Christians are declining (especially the Catholics in the Southern part of the Netherlands), there are some strict protestant municipalities with high rates of church attendence and high fertility rates. Some wear traditional clothes, only on sunday I think, so not that similar to the Amish. If you are interested Google: Staphorst (it is a municipality nearby my hometown Zwolle) and Urk (Municipality).

Just thought I'd add this comment. If you are interested in groups with high birthrates, conservative homeschool families generally have larger families. They may attend a variety of different types of churches, but many believe that children are a blessing and don't intentionally limit the number of children they have. Most of the families I know in this group have 8 or more children.

Very interesting and well presented. I have been doing all our family tree work here in the UK back to the 1700s (we are not Amish) and until women were able to control births, they did often have large numbers. Eg I bought all 40 birth certs of all my great aunts and uncles born from 1800s to 1900s. The 4 great grandmothers ranged from 9 to 11 children (of the 11 1 died so 10 results), one had 10 and that included twins. One had 9 but only 3 survived to age 21 (very sad). So basically about 10 or 11 is you marry around 18 - 20 and carry on until you are about 40. I think the one with 11 might have had more but her husband went to war twice so here were some gaps. I had 5 including twins but could have had more. In the UK many babies now being born are not from British parents. However most groups who move to the UK tend after 2 generations of not working the land etc then have fewer children in most communities other than hassidic jews. " In 2021, 28.8% of live births were to non-UK-born women" "I n 2021, Pakistan remained the most common country of birth for non-UK-born fathers; Romania was the most common country of birth for non-UK-born mothers, and this was up from second in 2020. Albania moved into the top ten most common countries of birth for both non-UK-born mothers and non-UK-born fathers for the first time." Anyway very interesting topic. We probably need about 5 in 6 of us to die off on this planet to be sustainable and have 18m more people in the UK ( a very small country) than when I was born and not enough space or housing so it is certainly an issue of our age.

I believe the Amish fertility rate may have something to do with their not exposing their bodies to all the chemicals, food additives, pharmaceuticals, pesticides and other toxins that non Amish people have allowed into their bodies. What do you think?

    • @DainetheHistorian
      @DainetheHistorian  2 роки тому +6

Hi David, great question! Fertility rates and birth rates are generally considered the same thing, which I think causes a lot of confusion and I should have said birth rates in the video. The Amish are pro-natalist, meaning they actively promote having children and large families, compared to the modern world which does not, or at least to a much lesser extent. You are definitely right that the Amish come across less plastics, additives, etc, which would cause infertility. But I think the main reason the Amish have higher fertility rates (birth rates) than the rest of Westerners is simply because of their encouragement of children and family values. For example, the Amish generally dislike the the idea of social security and pension plans looking after them in old age, which may be another motivator for them to have lots of children that can look after them in their old age.

There was an interesting report, 'Amish Projected To Overtake The Current US Population In 215 Years, If Growth Rates Continue', that claimed if the Amish maintain their existing fertility rate, they will be the majority population in the US.
Is that a big *If* ?
This was picked up by the blogosphere.
_'By 2303, 332 million Amish people will live in the United States if the Amish growth rate of doubling every 21-22 years continues. (Data from Elizabethtown College). But in fact, the Amish will not quite be a majority of Americans in 2250, because Orthodox Jews have only-slightly-slower growth rates.'_
_'Assume that regular US population stabilizes at 430 million in 2100. By 2250, the population is 430 million regulars, 450 million Amish, and 100 million Orthodox Jews, for a total of about a billion people.'_
A USDA statistician did a deep dive into future Amish demographics that's an interesting read: 'How Long Until We’re All Amish? Never Gonna Happen, But It’s a Fascinating Question!'
    by Lyman Stone.
Of course, other aspects have their influence. For example, the majority of Amish in Lancaster County no longer farm. Will this cascade elsewhere? Farmland is very expensive and the earnings from the trades are quite good. Unlike a single non-Amish farm family who might pick and go to cheaper farmland, the Amish move in groups; a few landless brothers, their landless cousins, maybe a couple of landless friends, and all their spouses needed to establish a district. This happens. But, what happens when these young fellas are the sons and grandsons of non-farming Amish? They haven't being picking up the agricultural skills in their youth. If they fall from farming, what else falls? How does workplace law affect 12-year-old boys working on construction sites or in a furniture shop beside their fathers? And if they can't pick the vocational training to comply with the mandatory diary, does it mean they have to go to public high school until they're 16 (or state-mandated minimum age)?
Moreover, if there is a large and persistent income gap between farming Amish and non-farming Amish (some Amish have now even entered banking and are doing quite well), this may reveal interesting martial choices by young Amish women. They certainly aren't as consumerist as non-Amish women, yet women are more attracted to security than risk. A young Amish fella earning good money in the trades and buying a home at a young age is a safer bet than a young fella with just a few acres or renting farmland. And who really enjoys milking the cows at 5 am on a freezing winter's day?

Right now Muslims should be seen as our allies. They want what we want--the ability to worship and practise our faith in peace. The ability to raise and educate our children as we see fit (including running schools). The ability to run businesses according to our consciences.

🌟Wonderful Video! EXCELLENT!🌟 However, I would like to add a comment about Amish "Rumspringë.! 😳 In this video it states that Amish teenagers "leave their Amish Community" and live in the outside world. It said, to experience the non- Amish lifestyle and to decide whether or not they wish to remain Amish. .... In Pennsylvania, Leaving home during teen years, "Rumspringë" is NOT part of Amish lifestyle!
** please note: I am only qualified to speak about the Pennsylvania Amish ( I lived for several years, in an Amish home, attended Amish activities and Amish Church services. Etc.. ).
So, I am wondering which Group of Amish, ( from which State), the video is referring to, about the teenagers leaving home and living in the outside world.
The Amish are very Conservative Christians. On various occasions, I have asked Pennsylvania Amish people about this subject, and the Pennsylvania Amish have NEVER heard of this "teenagers leaving home" type of "Rumspringë. I'm not saying the Amish are "Perfect". Occasionally, there are rebellious Amish teenagers who become involved in drinking and other activities. That, however, is Not accepted as a part of the Amish way of Life. The PA Amish community does not allow Alcohol or other drugs. Not even for the teenagers. And the Amish Youth are NOT encouraged to try out the "English" ( non Amish) way of life.
In Pennsylvania, The Amish teenagers join an Amish Youth group ("gang") where they meet together every Sunday to play Sports, Sing together, and Socialize. During the summer, the Amish Youth Groups have Volley ball Tournaments, Baseball games, and many other Outings such picnics, and trips--to the Beach or many other places ( like Niagra Falls, Museums, etc..) That is what the PA Amish teenagers do during the time of life called "Rumspringë."💙

I appreciated most of this video a great deal. I work with Amish and teach H.S. World History. I would have loved to share the video with students but you included nudity. I think this was pretty unnecessary and disappointing. :(

Just because they adhere to strict outward rules DOES NOT mean they are humble! They are very legalistic! They may have "some" good things mixed in but they have missed the mark in doctrine. Leglism kills grace.
