Why the New Republic Didn't Place its Capital on Coruscant

  • The New Republic has defeated the empire and driven them from the core into the Outer Rim and Unknown Regions. They've set up defense councils, the New Republic Amnesty program, even ranger patrols in the outer rim. So how come they haven't returned to Coruscant yet? Now that the war is over surely the new republic can finally symbolically finalize their goal of revitalizing and restoring the republic by taking the traditional republic seat of power on Coruscant.

    Honestly the worst part of the sequels is how it took all of the incredible sacrifices that the rebels made and made it all pointless. The culmination of all that suffering just ended up being a joke of a government that couldn’t even stop the most obvious enemy and was so weak that it collapsed in a single blow. Kanan, Andor, Luthen, Jyn, and many more peoples sacrifices all made meaningless because Mon Mothma wanted to basically virtue signal.

    That was what I had wondered. Arbitrarily relocating the capital of galaxy away from a planet like Coruscant would have to cause an economic and social collapse. Much like what happened to Trantor in Isaac Asimov's Foundation novels. When his Galactic Empire collapsed, most people had to evacuate because the city-planet was not self-sufficient in terms of things like food production. Mon Mothma's comes across as a well-intentioned but ultimately stupid bull in china shop. She made many idiotic decisions based purely on idealism and ended up causing enormous damage to the very New Republic that she worked so hard to build.

    • @BugRib
      @BugRib 10 місяців тому +1

      Perhaps Mothma made the best choice from a selection of exclusively bad choices.
      How do we know that the New Republic wouldn't have collapsed much sooner had she pushed too hard for a strong military & centralized government policy?
      How do we know that she and the New Republic wouldn't have faced mass opposition from powerful factions throughout the galaxy had she gone that route?

    • @daniels7907
      @daniels7907 10 місяців тому +5

      @@BugRib - The Republic is massive super-state and pretending otherwise is dishonesty. This was a problem with the Old Republic, as thousands of members increasingly saw it as a Core-centric state that treated everybody else as colonies.
      Has she brought smuggling under control? No! In fact, warship parts were being stolen from Republic-run shipyards. Has she reined in Imperial factions who could at least be successful terrorists if they chose? No! Has she prevented the Senate from becoming the same kind of mess that it was leading into the Clone Wars? No!
      I refuse to believe that this was the best option. If it was, then Republic doesn't deserve to exist.

    Coruscant has over a hundred miles deep of layers of floors from the top to the bedrock, with each floor almost covering the entire planet. That is not counting the numerous building spires that go even further above the surface.
    If one calculated the surface area of each floor, it is possible that could be as much surface area on Coruscant as equal to the surface area of a thousand Earths.

      But we do have issues that are similar to those of the old republic. Most of the governing is done by unelected bureaucrats, and the traits people need to rise into prominence within a political party and as politicians, make them terrible leaders of nations. In my native language there's an aphorism that translates to "Voting doesn't change anything, if it did, it were illegal." The past twenty years are not a counter against that.

    I feel like u may have (very briefly) mentioned this in another vid recently, but can the purgil be killed? They obviously die of old age etc, but I don’t think we’ve ever seen one killed, and after seeing them go through the minefield seemingly fine, probably just very annoyed, I have to wonder if there are any weapons (short of the death star/starkiller base) that could do it
    And love ur vids

    The rotation of capitals made sense to entice membership to the growing New Republic however, the strategic location of Coruscant and the infrastructure the planet had made it suitable for political activities.

    If we were talking about any other planet but Coruscant I wouldn't be saying this. But I could never figure out why the population of Coruscant would be cheering the fall of the Empire. After 20+ years as the Imperial capital I can't but believe that if you lived on the planet, you worked for the Empire. Your job, your family's financial (if not political) security was tied up with the well being of the Empire. And after 20+ years Palpatine would have ensured that of all planets- Coruscant would be the truest, most loyal in all the Empire. Sure the lower levels would be glad to see the Empire go, but the um, "activities" that were engaged in down there would have been frowned upon & prosecuted by the New Republic as well.

    Man, thinking about an undercity that never sees natural light just makes me think of the silent movie, Metropolis and how it depicted the people living beneath the city. It would be really interesting to see a Star Wars thing set entirely in the lower levels of an ecumenopolis like Coruscant or Taris.
    I hope it's not giving too much credit to Tony Gilroy to think the green and gold Senator in that scene is a perfect example of ducktalk from 1984 (as well as just repeating post-9/11 propaganda verbatim).

    I remember a quote, freedom is never free. The individuals who fought against the empire and tyranny knew they were going to die. Thats just how it is. The first heroes need to die until enough heroes stand up.

    I also noticed something that stuck out to me as odd. When Leia is mentioned in this scene they very specifically call her a senator. Which doesn't make any sense to me because 1; I think she should've been Supreme Chancellor, and 2; Senator of what planet? Certainly not Alderaan. I'm not sure if there are rules in the Republic Senate that say a senator _has_ to be a native of the planet they're representing, but it does seem to be implied.
